The signature is found at the end of a cut section of an 4-1/2 x 3 inch paper fragment of a manuscript letter. BIO NOTES: Sir Antonio Genesio Maria Panizzi was a naturalised British librarian of Italian birth and an Italian patriot. He was the Principal Librarian i. E. Head of the British Museum from 1856 to 1866. In addition to his English knighthood Panizzi was given an honorary degree by Oxford University the Légion d'Honneur from France various chivalric honours from the Italian Government and Crown and in 1868 was appointed as a senator in the Italian Parliament. ‎AROUND THE WORLD. Very Good. 1935. Full-Leather. On offer is the super beautifully printed diary specifically for the British Medical Association World Tour of 1935. This official diary was owned by Sir William Willcox as evidenced by the personal letters and other related ephemera in the book's pouch. The book contains the itinerary for every day of the tour with information and maps relating to places visited as well as all the travel and dining arrangements and travel tips given in detail. Space meant for the purpose and other blank spaces are used by the author many many pages of handwritten entries relating to the voyage the crew the other doctors and medical related observations and traded words of wisdom from other practitioners. Here are some biographical notes based on an online review of a biography of Sir William: The Detective-Physician: the Life and Work of Sir William Willcox by PHILIP H.A. WILLCOX London Heinemann Medical Books 1970 pp. xiv 332 illus. £3.50. In this book Dr. Philip Willcox has described the life and work of his father Sir William Willcox K.C.I.E. C.B. C.M.G. M.D. F.R.C.P. who was physician to St. Mary's Hospital from 1907 to 1935 and an expert forensic adviser to the Home Office from 1904 to 1941. It is much more than a work of filial piety. It describes a brilliant career she like of which is no longer to be seen in the modern world. As Dr. Willcox writesin his introduction: 'Here was the case of a man who without outside influence or financial support in his youth at first earned his living as a schoolmaster paid for his own medical education at St. Mary's Hospital at a time when there were no state sponsored scholarships qualified as a doctor became a Home Office pathologist and analyst consultant physician and lecturer in several subjects at his medical school.' Before the first world war Sir William Willcox gave evidence in twenty-five trialsfor murder or manslaughter including those of Crippen Steinie Morrison and Seddon. After the war he gave evidence in other famous trials and throughout the whole of these periods he was on the consultant staff of St. Mary's Hospital treating patients and teaching students and also running a large private practice in the West End of London. His retirement from the staff of St. Mary's was marked by a packed and emotional final ward-round about which the Dean the late Lord Moran wrote: 'What everybody thinks was shown by the turnout. I have never seen anything like it.'Sir William Willcox was born at Melton Mowbray in 1870 and throughout his life he indulged in the hobbies of a country squire: hunting hacking and shooting. In the sunset of his life I myself remember shooting with him when he was on a visit to my parents in Buckinghamshire. Sir William Wilcox first took a degree in chemistry and then taught chemistry for four years in a private school becoming a Fellow of the Institute of Chemistry. Clearly these years laid the foundation of his great knowledge of toxicology. He did not begin to study medicine until the age of twenty-five and he qualified with brilliant Honours in the London M.B. at the age of thirty. Soon Willcox joined the distinguished line of Home Office pathologists-Sir Thomas Stevenson Pepper Luff Webster-and in his turn he trained Spilsbury and Roche Lynch. It is interesting to record that all of Willcox's distinguished honours from the State were won on war service in World War I. He served with the Gallipoli expedition and in Mesopotamia where he made a great contribution to the recovery of the British Army from the early disasters of the campaign. Everyone who is immunised with TAB vaccine as I myself am each year should remember that this was pioneered by Willcox and Sir Robert Archibald. In 1918 General Sir Alfred Keogh the great Director-General of Army Medical Services in World War I who was honoured with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath a very singular honour for a medical man wrote to Willcox and cast his mind forward to the post-war period: 'To you and to me the great interest is of course the question of the national health its relation to national efficiency to housing to poverty and the relation of industrialism thereto. I have some-but not very stronghopes that the medical profession will come to realise that its part in these great questions is bigger than they have been in the habit of imagining. But we have to get away from the ideas that are so prevalent if not voiced that we are merely technical advisers and cannot like other professions produce leaders of men. I see little signthat "Public Health" is really recognised to be that which it is. All the talk is of sick benefit clubs halfcrowns for the practitioner and so on. The great things are forgotten.' Sir William Willcox was one of the first to be concerned about the problem of barbiturate addiction and in 1926 while engaged on this topic we find him writing: 'The BMA representatives are very obstinate and very difficult to deal with.' Plus Ca change plw c'est la meme chose. Sir William Wilcox lived in considerable style in Welbeck Street in the house where he had his private consulting rooms. He kept horses and rode every morning in Rotten Row. I remember a very senior general practitioner in the country just after World War II bemoaning the decline in standards of dress. He remarked that consultants now come to consultations in the country in small fast cars and wearing tweed jackets whereas Sir William Willcox used to be driven down from London by his chauffeur in a Rolls Royce car and wore a morning coat and top hat and 'the patients were very pleased to pay a guinea a mile for that'. Dr. Willcox has rightly eschewed any temptation to sensationalize the narrative of his father's great work in forensic medicine and in dealing with drug addiction. The facts stand on their own and the life and work of Sir William Willcox make fascinating reading. Unfortunately the book is somewhat marred by a considerable number of printing errors for example 'tetronal' is wrongly spelt on page 255 and Norman Kerr's name is wrongly spelt twice on page 284. What has happened to the proofreaders that all publishers used to employ But this small imperfection does not diminish the great interest of this biography and Dr. Willcox is to be warmly congratulated on it. ‎19th Century Cut Signature of Decorated British Army Officer and Adjutant-General in India Sir Edward Lugard‎

‎Britain United Kingdom England. Good with no dust jacket. Non-Book. On offer is a signature of Sir Edward Lugard 1810-1889 of the British Army. It is signed with the rank Major General. Lugard received his first commission in 1842 as an Ensign in the 31st Huntingdonshire Regiment of Foot and served in the First Anglo-Afghan War and both First and Second Sikh Wars. His station in India continued as he was appointed as Adjutant-General for the Punjab District in 1848 then as Deputy Adjutant-General in Bombay in 1854. He acted as Chief of Staff during the Anglo-Persian War 1856-57 before becoming Adjutant-General in India in 1957 a position he held until his return to the United Kingdom in 1859 . In 1862 he was appointed Colonel of his previous regiment the 31st Huntingdonshire which amalgamated in 1881 with the 70th Foot to form the East Surrey Regiment after which he was Colonel of the 1st Battalion of the new regiment until his death. Lugard’s duties in the United Kingdom included serving as Permanent Under-Secretary of State of War from 1861 until 1871. In March of 1867 he advanced to Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath and became a Privy Councillor in November 1871. His promotion to the rank of General followed in November 1872. Sir Edward died in 1898 at the age of 88. He is memorialized with a plaque in All Saints Church Kingston-upon-Thames Surrey. This signature is on a piece of cut paper measuring 3-¾ x 1-1/4 inches with torn corners and age toning. There is a partial watermark on the right edge that may have been a shield or crest. The postcard is dated from the University of Museum Zoology Cambridge July 14 1905. It has been addressed by hand to C. Gordon Hewitt Esq. c/o R. H. March Esq Ingleside Epping Essex. Hewitt has written to Harmer informing him of the return of Dr. Sharp who he says will need to make an appointment with Harmer. He asks Harmer to send Dr. Sharp his address in Cambridge so that Sharp can make an appointment to see him if he has time. Harmer has signed the note S. F. Harmer. BIO NOTES: Sir Sidney Frederic Harmer FRS1 9 March 1862 - 22 October 1950 was a British zoologist. He was President of the Linnean Society 1927-1931 and was awarded the Linnean Medal in 1934. Sidney Harmer was Superintendent of the Cambridge University Museum of Zoology from 1892-1908. Harmer was Keeper of Zoology at the Natural History Museum from 1909 to 1921 and director of the Museum from 1919 to 1927. His research library is held in the National Marine Biological Library at the Marine Biological Association in Plymouth. He was the father of Russell Harmer the gold-medal winning British sailor and great uncle of the actress and writer Juliet Harmer best known for her role in the 1960s TV series Adam Adamant Lives! Charles Gordon Hewitt 1885-1920 was was a Canadian economic entomologist and pioneer of conservation biology. Letter measures 4-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches hand-written two sides. On offer is a unique little packet notebook once carried by a noted British industrialist and parliamentarian in 1896 and of particular interest to historians and researchers of metallurgy and metal refinement and associated technologies. Handwritten by Sir Henry Wiggin 1st Baronet born in 1824 the son of a draper. Although he was apprenticed to that trade a friend of his father took him into his metal refining business laying the foundation for the international metals firm Special Metals Wiggin. At 18 he became an employee of Evans & Askin the metals refiner. In 5 years he was a partner and by age 46 the sole shareholder changing the name to Henry Wiggins and Co. He served as a Mayor of Birmingham in 1864 and as a Member of Parliament from 1885 until 1892. He was created a Baronet in 1892. He passed away at age 82 in 1905. His company became a publicly-traded firm and has been part of several large international nickel conglomerates including INCO in Canada. Today it is recognized as leading manufacturer of specialty metals. The notebook contains a wide variety of notes and comments. The majority are various formulae for metals manufacturing processes: Best Crystal Lead for Lenses Decanters Cutter etc. Sand White 3600 lbs Lead Red 2240 Pearl Ash 117.6 Saltpetre 280 To about 1800 lbs of batch about 2 lbs of Arsenic & 5 to 6 ozs of Manganese color according to furnace. He may have been a good chemist but he was also a shrewd businessman. For example he had two recipes for Opalite: Opal for Opalite - Best and Cheap Opal for Opalite Interspersed among the many metals formulae are more personal notes. By far though the most interesting entries are the many formulae that he noted. A researcher into Victorian-era manufacturing in the UK would find these an interesting insight into the manufacturing processes of the time. measuring 5 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches the notebook is in good condition. ‎Newfoundland Labrador Canada. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1810. On offer is an original manuscript document signed by Sir John Thomas Duckworth K. B. Vice Admiral of the Red 1748-1817 during his time as commander-in-chief and Governor of Newfoundland. Duckworth was born in Surrey England and attended Eton College before entering the Royal Navy in 1759. Late in his impressive military career Duckworth was appointed commander-in-chief and Governor of Newfoundland on March 26 1810. He served in this role until he resigned on December 8 1812. In late 1813 Thomas became a member of parliament for New Romney. He became a baronet in November 1813 and commander-in-chief of Plymouth naval base in 1815 He was made GCB on January 2 1815.This undated document can be traced to a day between late-March and late-July of 1810 during Duckworth’s first few months as commander-in-chief and Governor of Newfoundland. In the document Duckworth is identified as “Vice Admiral of the Red”. Records show he was not made a full Admiral until July 31 1810. The document signed by Duckworth blanks not filled in relates to a surrogate appointment. From 1729 until around 1825 Newfoundland’s Governors appointed lower-ranking British Naval Officers as Surrogates or Deputy Governors to oversee Newfoundland districts and act as judges to settle disputes during autumn quarter sessions Surrogate Court with the help of civil justices of the peace. The letter is transcribed below: Sir John Thomas Duckworth K. B. Vice Admiral of the Red Governor and Commander in Chief in and all over the Island of NewfoundlandWhereas by an Act of Parliament forged in the forty ninth year of His Majesty’s Reign entitled “An Act for establishing Courts of Judicature in the Island of Newfoundland and the Islands adjacent and for re-annexing Part of the Coast of Labrador and the Island lying on the said Coast to Government of Newfoundland land “it is enacted” that it shall be lawful for the Governor of the Island of Newfoundland from time to time to institute Courts of Civil Jurisdiction to be called Surrogate Courts in different parts of the Island of Newfoundland and the Islands adjacent as accession shall require with full power and authority to hear and determine in a summary way all Suits and Complaints of a civil nature arriving within the Island of Newfoundland and on the Island of St. Pierre and and Miquelon and on the Island and Sea to which ships or vessels repair from the Island of Newfoundland for carrying on the fishery and on the Banks of Newfoundland and in Great Britain or Ireland which Courts - respectively shall be Courts of Record and shall determine according to the law of England as far as the same can be applied to Suits and complaints arising in the Islands and Places aforesaid and the said Courts respectively shall be holden by a Surrogate to be appointed from time to time by the Governor of said islands and shall have full power and authority to have and determine all suits and complaints cognizable in the said Courts” - Be it known that by the authority vested in me as Governor of the island of Newfoundland and its dependencies. ‎1911 Pair of Letters between Sir Robert Falconer U of Toronto to Ontario Premier Sir James P. Whitney Ontario Premier Discussing Hungarian Count Apponyi‎

On offer is a pair of two letters between Sir Robert Alexander Falconer 1867-1943 President of the University of Toronto and Sir James P. Whitney 1843-1914 Premier of Ontario. The first letter is handwritten and signed by Robert Falconer to Sir James P. Whitney. It is dated in Toronto Feb. 21 1911. In the letter Falconer informs Whitney that the Hungarian Count Albert Apponyi 1846-1933 would be giving a lecture in Convocation Hall at the University and invites him to a luncheon for the Count at 1: 00pm. Falconer writes: ".As you know Count Apponyi is one of the most outstanding statesmen in the Austro-Hungarian empire having for years championed the rights of Hungary. He comes of an old family and is said to be an orator of exceptional power." The second letter is an unsigned typewritten letter representing Whitney’s reply on the same day. Sir Whitney or someone in his office politely declines the invitation. BIO NOTES: Sir Robert Falconer is most recognized for his 25-year tenure as president of University of Toronto 1907-32. A royal commission appointed to investigate all aspects of the university had found administrative chaos and low morale. It recommended a complete constitutional reorganization and implicitly a new president in 1906. To the surprise of many the 40-year-old Falconer was asked to replace James Loudon. Much of Falconer's time and energy for the next 2 decades was given to executing the recommendations of the 1906 commission. He inherited a collection of colleges; he left behind him an integrated university that led the country in industrial and scientific as well as humanistic research. Count Apponyi 1846-1933 was a Hungarian statesman whose political philosophy blended the conservative traditions of his background with Hungarian nationalism. Entering the Hungarian Parliament in 1872 Apponyi remained a member of it with one short exception until 1918. As Minister Minister of Religion and Education of Hungary Apponyi introduced changes in the school curricula that were greatly resented by the non-Magyars for their Magyarizing tendencies. Sir James P. Whitney 1843-1914 was the conservative Premier of Ontario from 1905 until his death in 1914. The first handwritten letter measures 5 x 8 inches folded 2 pp. signed red seal of University of Toronto. The second typed letter measures 8.5x11 inches. On offer is an interesting and original book of historical significance being an inscribed copy of Blackstone's Commentaries Volume Two Part Two having further manuscript notes handwritten by two noted Loyalists. This copy belonged to Loyalist William Wylly as evidenced by his bookplate. He was the first King's Council in New Brunswick later living in the Bahamas appointed solicitor-general and surrogate of the court of vice-admiralty. In 1804 he was appointed advocate-general of the vice-admiralty court in 1812 he became chief justice and in 1822 chief justice of the island of St. Vincent. The stamped inscription states: To his friend Cd. D. Colden aka Cadwallader D. Colden also a Loyalist during the Revolution. Colden studied law under Wylly. He was mayor of New York from 1818 - 1821 and also served as Senator from 1825-1827. This copy has been bound so that every other page is blank leaving space for hand-written notes etc. Some of the blank pages have original handwriting in two different hands older writing in ink presumably Wylly's and more recent pencil writing most likely Colden's. The book begins on page 257 and goes up to page 520 followed by the appendix and the index and a few more pages of writing appearing to be an additional or amended handwritten index. Both covers are detached. But the text block is still tight. There is no title page nor any publishing information save for the blindstamped title treatment of the spine but we suspect this was a special editor's copy. No publication markings. A rare medallion photograph showing Sissi at the age of 30. She is shown in a studied pose bust in profile and face turned three-quarters towards the viewer. We know that Sissi was particularly fond of diamonds arranged in star shapes and is here shown with a star-shaped diadem in her hair and a star-shaped ruby creation around her neck presenting her the way she wished to be seen. With her auburn hair and brown eyes her mother told her she was not beautiful in the sense that she did not conform to the strictures of beauty of the age being neither blonde nor brunette. Her beauty was later universally acclaimed however. Her flowery dress allows us to suppose that she is posing here in the dress she would wear during the celebration of her marriage to the Emperor Franz Josef the theme that she had given the wedding being flowers and diamonds. This photograph certainly retouched shows the control in which her image was held and presents a perfect Empress recorded for posterity. This photographic portrait was posed for at the same time as the painting in the Sissi Museum in Vienna which is exactly the same though the visiting-card photo was certainly destined for a different use than the painting itself. It was later made into postcards from the negative. unknown‎
