Burlington New-Jersey: James Parker 1765. First edition of the first published historical account of the state of New Jersey; one of only 600 copies printed by James Parker on a press owned by Benjamin Franklin. Octavo bound in full contemporary calf with a red morocco spine label lettered in gilt and raised bands to the spine. In very good condition. From the library of George and Rebecca Burr with their ownership names to the title page and front free endpaper and later their grand-nephew Alfred Burr with his bookplate to the pastedown. In very good condition. One of the rarest and most valuable of the Jerseyana group Smith's history was published in 1765 at Burlington by James Parker who had moved his printing press temporarily from Woodbridge for the purpose. David Hall of Philadelphia whose name appears on the title page sold the book at his shop. A century later a second edition was published containing a brief sketch of its author and a map engraved by William Faden London 1777. The original edition had no map. A third edition of the history was printed by the state of New Jersey and distributed to the schools and elsewhere in 1893. Samuel Smith was born of Quaker patronage at Burlington in 1720. He held important official positions in the province and in addition to writing his history of New Jersey he prepared material for a history of Pennsylvania which was never published. Autograph transcription of the first four stanzas of the American patriotic song My Country 'Tis of Thee which served as one of the de facto national anthems of the United States before the official adoption of The Star Spangled Banner in 1931. Transcribed and signed by lyricist Samuel Francis Smith all in his hand "My country 'tis of thee Sweet land of liberty Of thee I sing; Land where my fathers died Land of the pilgrims' pride From ev'ry mountainside Let freedom ring! My native country thee Land of the noble free Thy name I love; I love thy rocks and rills Thy woods and templed hills; My heart with rapture thrills Like that above. Let music swell the breeze And ring from all the trees Sweet freedom's song; Let mortal tongues awake; Let all that breathe partake; Let rocks their silence break The sound prolong. Our fathers' God to Thee Author of liberty To Thee we sing. Long may our land be bright With freedom's holy light Protect us by Thy might Great God our King. Samuel Francis Smith." Double matted and framed with a portrait engraving of Smith. The entire piece measures 18.5 inches by 18 inches. In near fine condition. A unique piece of American history. American Baptist minister Samuel Francis Smith wrote the lyrics to My Country 'Tis of Thee in 1831 as a student at Andover Theological Seminary in Andover Massachusetts at the request of personal friend and composer Lowell Mason who would later become a leading figure in American church music. Mason asked Smith to translate the lyrics to a selection of German school songbooks; a melody in Muzio Clementi's Symphony No. 3 caught Smith's attention and rather than translate the lyrics he set his own lyrics to the melody a feat he completed in less than thirty minutes. The song was first performed at a children's Independence Day celebration at Park Street Church in Boston on July 4th 1831 and first published under the title "America My Country 'Tis of Thee" in 1832. unknown books

BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA. Good. 1942. On offer are 2 interesting 5-year diaries written by a young woman in the southern United States. Spanning 10 year these diaries offer an insight into the world of this young girl. The diaries measure 5 1/2 inches by 4 inches and 5 3/4 inches by 4 1/2 inches respectively. Each has 365 pages and are 20% and 75% complete. The bindings on both are damaged and the cover on the first diary has become detached. The binding on the second volume has been damaged but the covers are intact. All pages are intact. The handwriting is legible. Bettye Jo Smith was born Nov 9th 1928. She lived in Birmingham AL. She begins her diary in 1942 at the age of 13. This diary which covers only 1942 deals with the events and interests that would matter to a 13 year-old girl. Top of the list would be boys and she mentions several who interest her: Gordon Wilder came home from the Navy today on a 15 day leave Mmmmmmmm Oct 15 1942 Gordon called me up this morning it sure did sound good to hear his voice again. My heart went Potatoe Tomatoe Potatoe! Oct 17 1942 . Today is my 14th birthday . I cried myself to sleep last night and woke up crying this morning because Gordon left. It sounds silly but it wasn't to me. Nov 9 1942. The second diary picks up in January 1948 when she is 20 years old. Being single and unmarried is very much on her mind. She begins the new year in 1951 with: Here I am starting another year as a 'Miss' instead of 'Mrs' Oh well. I'll just keep trying. That's all I can do. . Jan 1 1951. And try she does as many entries attest. There is a letter attached about how much she loves 'Howard' dated Jan 17 1948. But 2 years later on Jan 21st she meets Arlin Rye for the first time. Over the next two years her entries are full of references to him and a note slipped in between some pages shows that she and Arlin were later married. Entries throughout this volume are replete with references to friends and family and social events especially church. She is working but never specifies her job. The fact that she celebrates paydays only suggests that her job was merely a placeholder until she was married. From references to her friends it is obvious that she is not the only one who feels this way. These two diaries would be of great interest to a social historian or a Women's Studies researcher. The Public Shifted To The View Of The Poet Anna Seward Who Called Smith "Vain" And "Indelicate" For Exposing Her Husband To "Public Contempt".Smith Became Involved With English Radicals While Living In Brighton In 1791-1793. Like Them She Supported The French Revolution And Its Republican Principles. Her Epistolary Novel Desmond Tells Of A Man Journeying To Revolutionary France And Convinced Of The Rightness Of The Revolution. He Contends That England Should Be Reformed As Well.
