‎AUSTINBURG OHIO ASHTABULA COUNTY. Good. 1934. On offer is an interesting group of five 5 manuscript diaries exemplifying the life of a prosperous farmer's wife and her family in Depression Era and pre-war middle America. Handwritten by Daisy H Woods nee Herrick wife to Mr. George Woods and mother to Dwight and John. Daisy and her family reside in Austinburg Township Ashtabula Ohio and her diaries span January 1st 1934 - December 25 1939 with the exception of her 1936 diary which is absent. Daisy is in her mid-40s a well-meaning Christian who far too often misses church! and the backbone of her comfortable hard-working family. Daisy's diaries paint a fascinating picture of rural life in the early 20th century Ohio living on a busy farm that backs into an large wooded expanse wherein the farm runs all year around - gardening and berry picking in the summer canning in the fall preparing and selling animals in the winter and tapping for maple syrup in the spring. Each family member plays a role. The boys and men work tirelessly building ploughing feeding animals and helping neighbouring farmers in exchange for help on their own land. The women or in this case the woman Daisy works too. She is the family sales representative making near-daily trips to nearby Geneva and "Ash" which is where she goes when she goes into town to sell the farm's bounty. Daisy sells butter cream chicken maple syrup and sausage and proudly records what she has sold each trip in her diary. She is also the chronicler of the weather. The day's weather tends to begin most of her journal entries. She is also a proud and loving mother who frets when her eldest son Dwight is away from home working and rejoicing when he returns home for visits or to stay and work. Since Dwight and husband George are away so often Daisy babies young John who she brings with on most of her outings to town and coddles when he becomes ill allowing him to stay home from school for longer than he needs to on a few occasions. The Woods family offers an alternative view on life during The Great Depression. They are not victims of the Depression. Rather they are thriving. They own a car a Dodge they wash their clothes in a washing machine they buy pigs from the neighbours and pick up odds and ends on most of their trips to town Daisy hosts traveling salesmen and considers purchases such as the Singer brand sweeper which she claims she "doesn't like at all". Through visitors to the Woods' home and farm readers are introduced to many of the local families of Austinberg Ohio. We meet the Hendersons the Goodwins the Warrens the Ranbels and many many more. Daisy's is something of a hub of social gatherings to the point that she will make frustrated note on days that she does not receive visitors. Perhaps this is why Daisy is so interesting. She is the consummate mother and hostess yet she bucks gender norms in other ways. Stated plainly Daisy just doesn't like to work very hard. Of course she churns butter. Of course she cleans and bakes. But…a common day for Daisy is one where she writes about bustling around and accomplishing little followed by a meticulous summary of how back breakingly hard the men of the house labored. For example on August 1st 1938 she describes the hard labour her sons and husband engaged in all day long and concludes with "I didn't do much all day". She makes plans she gest distracted the day passes her by yet her boys and husband are often gone for days at a time working in the woods on the farm in the fields. Daisy's affinity for avoiding work is exemplified during the months of January-March 1937 when the Woods family take in victims of the Ohio Flood of 1937. Daisy's friends Nerlie and Martha come to stay along with their husbands and children. The husbands help on the farm and Nerlie and Martha do Daisy's chores. In fact it's not until January 27 1937 that Daisy even alludes to the reason her friends and staying with her when she states "this flood disaster is getting worse and worse". Prior to that she simply lists off who did the ironing washing and cleaning each day. Later she gives more detail about the assistance she and her family gave to the flood victims but by late-February Daisy becomes bored with the charity and frustrated with her guests' children. On February 28 1937 14-year-old Jack is kept home from school sick by his mother and Daisy states "Jack stayed home sick Was able to watch every move any of us made…" funny because she would often keep her own son John home sick for any number of reasons!. Daisy finally finds relief on March 5: "well they finally got moved got away about noon". Daisy has kept a thorough and detailed account of her life and the life of the men she loves the friends she chats with and the world she inhabits. Her diaries give life the farmers of Ohio and to a class of people who work hard and manage to avoid the pitfalls of the Depression thriving when others flailed. All of the Woods diaries are in very good condition and in the back of some of them she has kept a ledger of funds in and out which give a sense of the commerce of the time. It is easy to imagine Daisy and John in Geneva selling butter and noting the buyer and the price in the back of the diary. ‎1909 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG RICHMOND INDIANA MAN WITH A FASCINATION FOR LOCAL CRIME AND POLITICS‎

‎RICHMOND INDIANA IN. Good. 1909. On offer is a very interesting original 1909 manuscript diary and journal handwritten by Dale Barnum of Richmond Indiana. Mr. Barnum is a young man using slang of the day. He writes about concerts and plays he attends and mentions seeing Mid Summer Nights Dream and says it was "punk". He is also extremely interested in local crime criminal arrests politics and current events which local collectors and historians of the Richmond Indiana area will appreciate. Here are some snippets: "42 arrests last mon - drunks." "12 counties voted dry this week 42 dry now." "Prof Trueblood and Rev. T. P. Walter in trouble. See Mar. 31 - in Feb. only 7 arrests for drunk. "Ed Nesmith arrested." "Cool but fine - Mamma worries about me." "The Railsback meek shooting affair. Father & son killed." "J. B. Gordon assaulted at 9 o'clock by Byram Robbins." "Earl Brown killed himself at 4 pm today see June 8." "Cabinet meeting. Earl Browns body found today." "The great tariff fight is on." "Commenced working 59 hrs. per week." "Picnic at the glen Ray Bess x Roy Maude x Will Frank x Ancil Eva B. x P. I and Vera B. A hot time. Pass the beans." "Harry Rife murdered Mrs. Griswald at Eaton." Casual research finds the specifics of this horrid crime: Harry Rife shot Mrs. Lida Griswald after she rejected his advances in the library where she worked in front of her son. He was sentenced to death and died in the electric chair in 1910. Dale also mentions this. The 4" x 3" and the outer cover has some issues the leather is dry and fragile and has torn in places but it is still complete and the pages are not affected. The handwriting is quite legible and there are 274 entries. ‎This English educator and author served as principal of University College in Liverpool 1899-1903 and long-time vice-chancellor at the University of Liverpool 1903-19; in 1903 he revised and edited a history of English Congregationalism written by his father the noted Congregationalist church leader Robert William Dale. TLS 1p 7" X 9" Liverpool England 7 November 1908. Addressed to Reverend Oliver Huckel 1864-1940 American Congregationalist clergyman and author. Very good. Faint original folds; mounting traces on verso. On University of Liverpool letterhead Dale discusses some cryptic but clearly delicate issue regarding his and Huckel's mutual friend the noted Scottish theologian P.T. Forsyth 1848-1921. In part ".the Council and Educational Board of Mansfield College. came to no final decision so your judgment will still be in time to help us. I fully appreciate all that you say of Forsyth who is a close friend of mine and was a neighbour for many years; but we cannot run the risk of moving a man of his age to Oxford to begin new work under totally new conditions. He has never been a strong man physically." Boldly signed. ‎Garden City NY: Doubleday Doran & Company Inc 1931. First edition of Emmett Dalton's autobiography. Octavo original cloth with smoking gun vignette to the front panel pictorial endpapers frontispiece portrait of Emmett Dalton after a photograph taken in 1892. Signed by Emmett Dalton beneath his frontispiece portrait. In near fine condition. The Dalton brothers led one of the last gangs of horseback outlaws. Ironically three of them - Bob Grant and Emmett - started their careers as deputy marshals. They soon decided that more money could be made from horse rustling and in 1888 they organized a band that carried on a thriving trade. When they came under suspicion toward the end of 1890 the brothers went to California where on February 6 1891 at the small station of Aila they held up a Los Angeles-bound passenger train. The robbery failed when the baggage clerk excaped and the Daltons were unable to break into the safe. Grat was captured and sentenced to twenty years in prison but escaped from the train carrying him to Folsom. The gang resumed operations in Oklahoma where during the next two years they robbed three trains before turning to the more lucrative trade of bank robbery. Modeling their plans on the James brothers the Daltons struck the two banks at Coffeyville Kansas on October 5 1892 hoping as Bob said "to beat anything Jesse James ever did - rob two banks at once in broad daylight." However the identical fate that befell the James gang at Northfield Minnesota awaited the Daltons. Confronted with a large crowd of armed townsfolk the gang attempted to shoot its way to safety; in the battle Bob Gat and two other gang members were killed and Emmett was severely wounded and captured. It is the basis for the 1940 film directed by George Marshall and starring Randolph Scott Kay Francis and Brian Donlevy. Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc hardcover books‎

‎1950s to 1960s ORIGINAL MEMORY BOOK AND LETTER COPY BOOK OF A VIET CONG SOLDIER LEAVING HIS FRIENDS FOR THE WAR IN THE SOUTH‎

‎VIETNAM. Poor. 1955. On offer is a fascinating original manuscript relic of the early Vietnam War dating back from the mid to later 1950s to the early 1960s. Handwritten by a Vietcong soldier called Mao full name Ðang Van Xuân the book is comprised of poems letter copies and diary like entries and pages that remind one of memorial albums with entries by friends and admirers with whom he studied political courses by the Communist Party in Hanoi for 3 years. The writings include; sentimental patriotic love poems about the role of love in war and love in general; also the lyrics of popular songs which our research finds are still known in Vietnam today. Our research suggests he lives in the North and the book commemorates that he is going far away. We know he is heading South on a 'mission' and likely combat as names mentioned include southern provinces: 'Nghe An' and 'Ha Tinh'. Interestingly the book had a dual purpose. When reversed the last 10 pages or so were used for mounting stamps; tax stamps payroll stamps we can only surmise but the stamps have since been removed but not by us. The book is in poor shape the text block loose but all accounted for.
