On offer is an original handwritten 1867 diary kept by minimally literate farmer Daniel Leary of Keene New Hampshire who records the sale of his pigs visits cutting hay etc. Entries are sparse but the flavor of a rough life on a New Hampshire farm comes through especially when he makes personal notes. Fro example on July 25 1867 Daniel's father gets sick and then he has priest and doctor in; then he records three weeks of visits sometimes three in a day by the doctor. Then in November he notes on a Sunday morning that his father went to work. This is a traditional leather diary with calendar for 1867 list of eclipses sunrise sunset etc. and two folding pockets and broken fastener. On offer is a charming archive of seven 7 handwritten letters with four 4 envelopes circa 1905 - 1906 written by Daniel Wright Kittredge to his friend Rachel Gaff Holmes. Research suggests that Holmes came from a family of New Orleans merchants and she would one day become Mrs. Joseph Fay Ingalls in 1909. Daniel Wright Kittredge a noted American author from Cincinnati we believe who wrote "Memoirs of a Failure" in 1908; "All the World Loves a Quarrel in 1911; and "A Mind Adrift" in 1920. The letters are humorous affectionate and speak of the times they've had she helping him pick titles for his books his health his "stuttering" guitar asking her to lean on him more many mentions of places and people they are going to visit etc. Obviously the two enjoyed a long intimate easy friendship. While In San Francisco She Began Working For Photographer Johan Hagemeyer And He Taught Her The Basics Of The Trade. Through Hagemeyer She Met Edward Weston And From 1929 To 1935 She Lived With Him As A Lover Student Model Printer Of His Commercial Photographs And Surrogate Mother To His Children. While With Weston She Developed A Strong Vision Of Her Own And She Quickly Became Known For Her Portraits And Artistic Images. In 1932 Noskowiak Became An Organizing Member Of The Short-Lived Group F/64 Which Included Such Important Photographers As Ansel Adams Imogen Cunningham Willard Van Dyke Weston And His Son Brett. Members Of F/64 Believed That Photography Was An Art Form In Itself And So Photography Did Not Need To Follow The Norms Of The Fine Arts In Order To Be Defined As Art. Noskowiak's Works Were Shown At Group F/64'S Inaugural Exhibition At San Francisco's M. H. De Young Museum; She Had Nine Photographs In The Exhibit - The Same Number As Weston.She Continued Taking And Selling Photographs Through The 1950'S. In 1900 Ding became a reporter for the Sioux City Journal. Following his marriage to Genevieve Pendleton in 1906 he began work with the Des Moines Register and Leader. In 1911 he moved to New York and worked with the New York Globe but went back to Des Moines in 1913. Three years later in 1916 he returned to New York and accepted a position with the New York Herald Tribune. By 1919 Darling returned a final time to Des Moines where he continued his career as a cartoonist winning the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1924 and again in 1943. His cartoons were published from 1917 to 1949 in the New York Herald Tribune. The Iowa State College Press hardcover books

Chicago Metalsmiths: An Illustrated History
Chicago Historical Society 1977. This is a very good or better hardcover copy without dust jacket as issued with almost no wear. Completely clean. This monograph was prepared to accompany the exhibition at the Chicago Historical Society in 1977. Sharon Darling's work at the Society sparked or at least co-incided with a revival of interest in the decorative arts work in Chicago around the turn of the twentieth century. She has also produced monographs on the ceramics of the period notably Teco Pottery. This exhibition took an expansive view of the Chicago School with the first works in the show being silverware from a number of firms like Sherwood & Whatley Edwards & Company and Speer & Cosper active in the early nineteenth century. The exhibition had many highlights: Robert Jarvie's exquisite silver punch bowl and silver water pitcher of 1911; the many Kalo Shop Arts & Crafts designs bronze andirons by Prairie School architect George G. Elmslie executed by Jarvie Falick Novick's 20th century copperwork etc. Illustrated throughout in black & white with 155 works catalogued and photographed many with small photos of the maker marks.
