Essentially historical memoirs the marquis de Montglat rarely puts himself on stage carefully gathering the facts of his time from 1635 to 1668; although the memoirs provide military details campaigns between France and Austria Montglat applies himself to unraveling the mechanisms of the court; the troubles of the Fronde are skillfully described and with much more impartiality than in all the memoirs of the time Retz and associates. The preface that recommends the book is by Father Bougeant a highly regarded Jesuit man of letters and historian who applied himself to editing these memoirs very conscientiously. S. n. hardcover

Request from the writer in favor of an article that would open the doors of the theater to him and could lift him out of his misery. The writer speaking of himself under the pseudonym Aristénète evokes his poverty and his situation. After 36 years in service to the king's ministry he was indeed dismissed by Fouché and his pension reduced. Nogaret evokes the literary world of his time and some colleagues accusing a certain Guillard of having plagiarized Hoffmann. In this letter Nogaret clearly asks for help for literary work begging for some recommendation. Aristénète was the title of his collection of short stories published in 1807 it was also the title of a theatrical play: Aristénète au vaudeville. unknown

It is illustrated with a frontispiece repeated in both volumes a title vignette by Picart also repeated and 10 unsigned figures quite charming showing the actors on stage. Later full brown sheep binding circa 1800. Spine with raised bands and fillets. Tan morocco title label. Headcaps worn. Contemporaries saw in La Grange-Chancel the successor to Racine. He boasted of having the highest capacity for writing verse. His connections brought him to Louis XIV who asked Racine to read it and the latter sponsored the author's first play. Many of his plays met with fine success and the author represents if not a great dramatist the taste of an era for a certain kind of theater. Most of the subjects of his plays are drawn from the novels of Calprenède whom he particularly favored. Contemporary binding in half glazed blonde calf. Spine with false raised bands decorated with cold and hot fillets roulette at foot. Red morocco title label and black morocco volume label. A very slight crack to the upper joint at the head of volume 4 otherwise fine copy moreover of perfect freshness. Essential memoirs for understanding the Empire according to Tulard. Mollien was Minister of the Treasury from the Consulate to the end of the Empire. His memoirs are particularly concerned with details and precision. In the preface Mollien admits his preference for Adam Smith's school over his own Mollien spent 5 years in England studying finance after being dismissed and imprisoned during the Terror. He notably created the Court of Auditors. The work begins with an analysis of France's financial situation under Louis XVI up to Bonaparte's rise. The tax system was consolidated under Napoleon notably as consequences of the Empire's multiple wars. The memoirs contain numerous letters between the minister and his sovereign. Initially a magistrate then diplomat Nicolas de Buzenval 1611-1679 received the diocese of Beauvais in 1650 where he showed great diligence and profound rigor developing policies favorable to the poor. It is possible that they are in the hand of citizen Mulot himself or his secretary; these are in any case original unpublished works. Full Empire green long-grain morocco binding. Smooth spine decorated with a gold chain running lengthwise. Green morocco title label. Boards decorated with a framing frieze. Despite rubbing traces a handsome and rare copy in contemporary green morocco. Mainz was the capital of the Austro-Hungarian offensive intended to destroy the French Revolution but the offensive of the French army notably at the Battle of Valmy put an end to these pretensions. The French army marched on Mainz and made it a republic the first democratic republic of Germany but Prussian and Austrian forces retook the city in April 1793. Although the city was retaken Mainz remained the chief town of the Mont-Tonnerre department which was not returned to Prussia until 1814. The imperials left the city in 1794 and the French armies led by General Bonaparte returned the Prussian territory to France. It is not known when Mulot settled in Mainz but he worked in his own way to transform the city and make it a French city as these speeches honoring the French Revolution testify. Abbé Mulot was before the Revolution prior and librarian of Saint-Victor abbey he became a deputy and had an active role in the Revolution his role in massacres in Provence earned him dismissal as deputy but he continued his activities by joining the Society of Theophilanthropy a sort of Christian moral association intended to weaken Catholicism in France. A fine testimony to the French presence in Germany during the revolutionary period by an important actor. Chez André Crass hardcover
