One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on China paper with wide margins artist's signature in the plate publisher's dry stamp depicting a child's profile in the lower margin mounted on a sheet of laid paper with the numbered deluxe edition stamp on the verso some foxing. Lithograph inspired by an extract from Georges Rodenbach's Miroir du ciel natal. Magnificent French monthly publication issued between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other periodicals such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specifically by each artist for the periodical. Thus 100 prints were published in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each issue of four prints was printed in 2000 copies sold at 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print in a handsome format is superbly printed on one of the most prestigious papers: China paper. ""Despite all its qualities China paper too insubstantial owes its reputation not to its own beauty but to its particular affinities with printing ink. Its texture smooth and soft at once is more apt than any other to receive a fine impression. This property makes China paper sought after for printing engravings."" Anatole France. The interest of French collectors in artistic posters intensified at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""postomania."" The poster originally popular and posted in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the luxury illustrated book. This History of the Italian Wars begins in 1490 and ends in 1534; Guicciardini worked on it for 27 years and his work in the opinion of critics of his time is precious and of great merit; even if he was reproached for his violence his impartiality was greatly praised; this work did much for the modernization of methods in history. It should be noted that feminine arms are usually much rarer than masculine ones. Freron's literary journal declared enemy of the philosophers' party and principal target of Voltaire had enjoyed considerable success since its creation in 1754 it still appeared in sheet form later to form volumes. LE PREVOST D'EXMES establishes a formal critique of the periodist Freron and of the Literary review. Freron not only vilified the philosophers but the literature of his time. The second part more philosophical defends the cause of the philosophers and the work of several authors such as Diderot and Rousseau. Behind the criticism of Freron's enterprise an ethics of writing and criticism is revealed. The work is composed in the form of letters addressed to a lady in London. All his books achieved great success throughout Europe. His ornithological collection would join the Leiden museum France not acquiring it. Some bird names he invented are still in use. Important diplomatic relations by one who was a great lord and great military man concerning the Valtellina affair with Spain and Switzerland and that of the projected marriage of the king's sister and the Prince of Wales in England. A collection of articles and letters that allow one to realistically follow the progress of diplomatic missions a historical introduction each time allows one to grasp the stakes of each embassy: these missions which greatly interested France prove Bassompierre's position with Louis XIII. Upon his return and after having taken part in the siege of La Rochelle he was imprisoned in the Bastille for 12 years for intrigues by Richelieu. It is traditionally accepted that like his Mémoires these Ambassades were also written in prison but it is difficult to see how from such a place Bassompierre could have realized such a work which required numerous researches and access to archives especially as the work appears greatly to be that of a historian; it bears the mark in its writing and structure; but it could have been initiated realized in collaboration to complete the work of the memoirs. One of the rare copies containing both epistles by Bois-Robert and Scarron most copies contain fewer preliminary leaves. A frontispiece portrait of the author drawn by Petrus and engraved by Daret; a title vignette printer's device on title page. Contemporary limp vellum binding. Smooth unlettered spine. Light stains to upper board. Worming to preliminary leaves after the first two leaves to lower margin; although confined to margin numerous wormholes throughout preliminary leaves. Also to note worming to table of contents and extending from final text leaves always to lower margin. Some foxing and yellowed leaves. This edition was largely prepared by the author himself and is the only one he acknowledged conscious of the value of his work and his approaching death died in 1646; it contains 268 pieces of which 173 are unpublished. Some pieces that had appeared in collective volumes do not appear in this complete works. François Maynard is one of the principal names in poetry of the first half of the 17th century alongside Malherbe Racan Viau Regnier. A disciple of Malherbe his poetry is distinguished by the great clarity of its style and regularity of its verse; it also conveys a certain melancholy. Chez Augustin Courbé hardcover
