With four copper-engraved folding plates including diagrams of the Franklin stove and the earliest published map of the Gulf Stream. In very good condition. Intended by the publisher as a companion volume to the Experiments and Observations on Electricity 1769 and his Political Miscellaneous and Philosophical Pieces 1779 Franklin's Philosophical and Miscellaneous Papers contains a selection of important political essays including his Remarks concerning the Savages in North America 1784 The letter from Dr. B. Franklin to Benjamin Vaughan. of Privateering 1785 and Information to those who would remove to America 1784 which is "one of the clearest expressions of his belief that American society should be based on the virtues of the middle. classes" Isaacson 423. Also highly notable is Internal State of America his sharply optimistic postwar reply to "complaints of hard times in the American press. with an equally sharp consciousness of British propaganda" Crane William and Mary Quarterly XV:2 218. This volume additionally contains three major scientific writings: Description of a New Stove for the burning of Pitcoal 1785 Letter from Dr. B. Franklin to Dr. Ingenhausz On the Causes and Cure of Smoky Chimneys 1785 and Letter from Dr. Benjamin Franklin. containing sundry Maritime Observations 1785. Merging his political and scientific interests Franklin used Maritime's study of the sea and Gulf Stream to "proclaim the virtues of his nation and its people." This inspired others to also "think of the Gulf Stream in political terms. Octavo bound in contemporary wrappers frontispiece portrait of Franklin engraved by Alexandre Tardieu after Duplessis' painting. The Way to Wealth was first published as the preface to Poor Richard's Almanack of 1758 the last of the almanacs written by Franklin himself under the title "Father Abraham's Speech." Revered for the elegance of its printing this bi-lingual edition also includes Franklin's private letter to Madame Passy along with "Dialogue entre la goutte et Franklin" the poem "Le Sage et la goutte" and the essays "Quelques mots sur l'Amerique avis a ceux qui voudroient aller s'etablir dans cette contree" and the separately paginated "Observations sur les Sauvages du Nord de l'Amerique" which is noted by Ford to be present in only a few copies. This pithy collection of the most clever sayings garnered from the run of Poor Richard's Almanack was first printed as a separate edition by Franklin's nephew Benjamin Mecom of Boston in March of 1758. By the late 18th century the work had attained great popularity not only in American but in London and Pairs. Renouard's The Way to Wealth was revered not only as the first bi-lingual edition but for the elegance of its printing; emphasizing the tremendous esteem Franklin had earned during the years he dwelt among the French to whom his words of wisdom symbolized the freedom embodied in the newly-founded American republic of no small significance in the wake of their own revolution. From 1944 to 1949 he was Chairman and President of the American Red Cross and from 1945 to 1950 he was Chairman of the League of Red Cross Societies. In fine condition. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Scarce and desirable. American statesman and political leader Franklin Delano Roosevelt served as the President of the United States from 1933 to 1945. A Democrat he won a record four presidential elections and dominated his party after 1932 as a central figure in world events during the mid-20th century leading the United States during a time of worldwide economic depression and war. During the summer of 1938 Roosevelt cruised the Galapagos Islands on a scientific expedition sponsored by the Smithsonian. Aboard the U.S.S. Houston with him were scientists representing a wide field of studies. These monographs were published as government pamphlets and include at least three new species discovered and named for F.D.R. First complete edition of "the most important scientific book of eighteenth-century America" PMM inscribed by Benjamin Franklin to prominent Pennsylvania Quaker and merchant Thomas Livezey Jr. Quarto bound in full contemporary calf with elaborate gilt tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands morocco spine label lettered in gilt gilt turn-ins. Illustrated with 7 copper-engraved plates 2 of which are folding. Presentation copy inscribed by Benjamin Franklin on the front free endpaper “To Mr. Livesy sic From his obliged Friend & humble Servant The Author.†With Thomas Livezey's ownership signature to the second free endpaper "Thomas Livezey Junior 1810." The recipient Thomas Livezey Jr. 1723-1790 was a member of the fourth generation of the prominent Pennsylvania Quaker Livezey family. His ancestor Thomas Livezey the elder 1627-1691 was among the earliest settlers of Pennsylvania; his land was a portion of William Penn's Pennsylvania colony and was granted to him directly by Penn in an early patent. Thomas Livezey Jr. established one of the largest flour mills in colonial British North America the Livezey Mill and rose to prominence as one of the major suppliers of high quality flour to the world during that era. Situated on Wissahickon Creek in Philadelphia the Livezey Mill was a major colonial operation provided flour both domestically and overseas and fed numerous armies throughout the eighteenth century including those fighting on both sides of the American Revolution. The mill was in continued operation for more than one hundred twenty-ï¬ve years until roughly 1874. Livezey was elected to the colony of Pennsylvania's legislative body the Pennsylvania Assembly in 1765. Benjamín Franklin had been elected to the Pennsylvania Assembly 14 years earlier in 1751 and in 1764 one year prior to Livezey's appointment Franklin was sent to London by the Pennsylvania Assembly as a colonial agent to protest against the political influence of the Penn family with whom the assembly was becoming increasingly frustrated. He remained there for five years striving to end the Penn family's prerogative to overturn legislation from the elected Assembly and their exemption from paying taxes on their land. His lack of influential allies in Whitehall led to the failure of this mission. Franklin and Livezey were warm acquaintances despite their differences. In late 1767 Livezey sent a case of wine he had made from wild grapes to Franklin in London writing “I heartely wish it may arive Safe and warm the hearts of Every one who tastes it with a Love for America. And would it Contribute towards bringing about a Change of Government but one month Sooner I would Gladly Send all I have.†In early 1768 Franklin thanked Livezey in a letter stating that he “shall apply this parcel as I did the last towards winning the hearts of the Friends of our Country and wellwishers to the Change of its Government.†PMM 199; Grolier 100 American Books 10; Dibner Heralds of Science 57. Presentation copies of this first collected edition are scarce. This is the only presentation copy to a known recipient to appear on the market over the course of the past century. Housed in custom three quarter morocco clamshell box. “Franklin’s most important scientific publication†Experiments and Observations contains detailed accounts of the founding father’s crucial kite and key experiment his work with Leiden jars lightning rods and charged clouds Norman 830. “The most dramatic result of Franklin’s researches was the proof that lightning is really an electrical phenomenon. Others had made such a suggestion before him— even Newton himself— but it was he who provided the experimental proof†PMM. “The lightning experiments caused Franklin’s name to become known throughout Europe to the public at large and not merely to men of science. Joseph Priestley in his History of Electricity characterized the experimental discovery that the lightning discharge is an electrical phenomenon as ‘the greatest perhaps since the time of Isaac Newton… Franklin’s achievement… marked the coming of age of electrical science and the full acceptance of the new field of specialization†DSB. Franklin’s theory encompassed static electricity lightning and stored charge paving the way for countless theoretical and technological innovations. Immanuel Kant referred to Franklin as the “new Prometheus†for he managed to steal the fire of heaven. The work brought Franklin international renown. He became the first American elected to membership in the Royal Society and he was awarded the Copley Medal the highest scientific honor of the day. Franklin edited the collected edition of his Experiments and Observations himself revising the text adding a number of his own philosophical letters and papers and publishing the complete notes on all of his experiments. The first volume is devoted entirely to electricity with the addition of several pieces not included in any previous editions. The second volume contains other scientific writings including works on meteors his improvements on chimneys the "Franklin stove" sections on population increase inoculation music the "magic circles" and other topics. This edition was translated by Jacques Barbeu Dubourg a leading philosopher and one of Franklin's closest friends in France. This copy contains the portrait of Franklin not found in all copies. Fold marks inherent to postal handling. We include an envelope addressed to Franz Hellens and written by André Malraux which probably contained the response to our letter. Franz Hellens responds to a request for information made by André Malraux: ""Je n'ai pas oublié le renseignement que vous m'avez prié de vous procurer au sujet du Voyage au Congo. Voici la réponse que j'ai reçu de la compagnie belge maritime du Congo. Ce n'était pas du tout ce que j'avais demandé"" ""I have not forgotten the information you asked me to obtain regarding the Journey to Congo. Here is the response I received from the Belgian maritime company of Congo. It was not at all what I had requested"" and will attempt to learn more in order to help his friend: ""Je vais écrire autre part et tâcher d'obtenir une réponse précise à ma question. Patientez donc quelques jours encore."" ""I will write elsewhere and try to obtain a precise answer to my question. Please wait a few more days."" Autograph letter in German signed by the painter Franz Marc to his mother Sophie Marc née Maurice; two pages in black ink. Trace of horizontal and vertical fold. Unpublished letter. Not in the latest edition of his wartime correspondence Briefe aus dem Feld Norderstedt 2019. Lengthy unpublished letter from Franz Marc to his mother during the First World War written a few months before his death in Verdun. In the horror of the conflict the future martyr of German expressionism recalls childhood images and tells horse stories from the front. Stationed on the Alsace front the famed animal painter recounts a hilarious wild boar hunt improvised during a horseback ride reminding him of an illustrated childhood tale: The Three Jovial Hunstmen by Randolph Caldecott 1880. Franz Marc reveals here an inspiration for his famous horses which gave their name to the “Blaue Reiter” movement created in 1911 with Wassily Kandinsky. The horses in Caldecott's Huntsmen resemble Franz Marc's paintings from 1905-1910. This anecdote is also related to “hunting horses” sketched on the front and a postcard sketch of the same “Jagende Pferde” sent to the poet Else Laske-Schüler in September 1915. The letter gives a glimpse of Franz Marc's daily life on the front. By a cruel irony of fate he fought in the native region of his mother Sophie Marc née Maurice born in 1847 in the Alsatian village of Guebwiller. When war broke out in August 1914 he joined the army hoping for a renewal of Europe like many fellow artists and intellectuals. Due to the circumstances of the war the painter wrote his letter in German and not in French as he was accustomed to do in his correspondence with his mother. His mother's influence was decisive in his aesthetic and spiritual approach: Marc's tireless quest for “purity” inherited from his Calvinist upbringing eventually led him to abstraction already present in his sketches as he wrote this letter. He gives news of a future promotion thanks his mother for sending him food and fills the page with the story of his miraculous hunt: “I have one more amusing story to tell: as I was riding out at dawn before breakfast I suddenly noticed a young boar a wild boar beside me in a ditch. I immediately called my fellow riders; he was surrounded – I already felt sorry for the poor animal but the pity came too late! – Two of them jumped in one grabbed him by the ears the other poked him and the roast for the steward's table was retrieved. A most comical scene ensued: We ordered the youngest soldier to go home with the boar and got him on horseback; but no sooner did the horse feel the boar on his back horses are very afraid of boars than he reared up and threw the rider and the pig into a great arc. Fortunately nothing happened and the embarrassed rider had to walk the boar back then the horse really reared up as soon as he was approached. A real amateur rider! I was thinking of Dad's old English picture book: the jovial huntsman!” With this light-hearted anecdote the painter reveals a source of inspiration still unknown to critics and historians. The Three Jovial Huntsmen certainly influenced the young Franz Marc whose own horses painted in the 1910s including the Weidende Pferde I Lenbachhaus Munich are unmistakably marked by Caldecott's British style. In the following years he added to this subject his kaleidoscopic touch and his emblematic blue red and yellow colors charged with spiritual symbolism. Franz Marc also painted blue wild boars in 1913 Museum Ludwig Cologne. The story of this hunt is also completely new since he asked his mother to tell it to his wife Maria to avoid writing a second letter “it's long: to tell the same thing twice”. This anecdote about hunting and rearing horses can be directly linked to a sketch on a postcard dated the following month entitled “jagen unknown‎

One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on Japan paper with wide margins artist's signature and date in the plate publisher's embossed stamp representing a child's profile in lower margin numbered stamp of the deluxe issue on verso; engraving preceded by a tissue guard inscribed with the artist's name title and a poem; blank tissue guard. Lithograph inspired by a poem by Charles Morice which is reproduced on the tissue guard of the print. Magnificent French monthly publication issued between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specially by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Epoque. Each issue of four prints was printed in 2000 copies sold at 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan with wide margins and 50 in black on China at the considerable price of 30F. This print in a handsome format is superbly printed on the most prestigious of papers: Japan. Thick silky satiny and pearly it contributes to making each page a work in its own right. Its quality of ink absorption and its affinity with colours also make it the ideal support for these very beautiful lithographs. French collectors' interest in artistic posters grew at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""affichomanie"". The poster originally popular and posted in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the deluxe illustrated book. He thus composed a prestigious collection of entirely original works by the most prominent European artists of the moment: Georges de Feure Eugène Grasset Henri Detouche Emile Berchmans Louis Rhead Gaston de Latenay Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Gustave-Max Stevens Charles Doudelet Hans Christiansen Henri Fantin-Latour Steinlen Ibels Engels Willette Henri Meunier Evenepoël Bellery-Desfontaines Charles Léandre etc. Handsome copy in the Symbolist style.
