The second volume is from 1833. The significant publication delay between the first and second volumes allowed for some remarkable additions: Supplement to the treatise on light by Quetelet p. 336-602 of volume 2 in which the latter exposes recent research in optics. The illustration comprises 15 folding plates. The treatise on light had only appeared in the form of articles in the Philosophical transactions and this is its first edition in volume form to which Herschel contributed with his corrections. Full olive green sheep bindings slightly later ca 1840. Smooth spines decorated with geometric arabesques in long grain. Boards stamped in blind with a large floral plate central medallion on the upper board of the Royal College of Orleans with laurel crown. Spines sunned and turned light brown with traces of discoloration and rubbing. Corners and edges rubbed. On the pastedown price label dated 1845. Scattered browning except on the plates which are very fresh. Sir William Herschel was a British astronomer. Herschel demonstrated the existence of infrared radiation by analyzing sunlight using a prism and thermometer. He also found the first evidence that light and infrared are two aspects of the same phenomenon now called electromagnetic radiation. ‎GREAT BRITAIN. Very Good. 1815. On offer is simply superb manuscript of a Royal Navy officer's exploits in the age of "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World". From the Napoleonic Wars through the rest of the 19th century Britain ruled the world and her instrument was the Royal Navy. This outstanding manuscript details the service of one officer who sailed to 'the far side of the world' when the Royal Navy ruled the world's seas. The manuscript is 176 pages in length and is 100% complete. All pages are typed so legibility is total. Pages are 8 1/24 by 14 inches. The pages are in excellent condition. They are enclosed in a hard cardboard folder. There are several other papers with the manuscript including one of note that will be elaborated on below. John Fullerton joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman in May 1815 at 12 years of age. He began his service on HMS Larne a 20 gun corvette. Four days in he saw his first punishment: ". four dozen lashes the first punishment I had ever seen and I never yet met the person who could look upon the infliction without a shudder" p1. From that rather grim introduction he went on to serve in a series of HM ships and travelled the world. He describes his rite of passage when he first crossed the equator on Oct 11th 1819: ". All those who have not been across the Line now go below and the hatchways are guarded . and one at a time blindfolded brought up taken to the chair through a line of people who . "p. 6. He had plenty of adventures. Once after becoming acquainted with a woman in Rio de Janeiro he met a man as he left her home. After exchanging greetings: ". he politely put a knife into my left side and left it there. I gave him an equal portion of my sword and retreated to the ship hospital ." p11. With his friend Hack Hawthorn a Wild Middy p11 he often got into scrapes including one where he and some friends faced off with a Portuguese military street patrol: ". Our swords out and in less than three minutes had possion of their muskets and bayonets but obliged to decamp on board. . Jack generally got those who went on shore with him into similar scrapes." p.12. In 1821 he was commissioned a Lieutenant. His manuscript is rich in observations of places he travelled to and people he met. He mentions a collision with HMS Revolutionaire which was under command of the son of the great Royal Navy Captain Edward Pellew. p24 His descriptions are rich in detail: "I accompanied some Chilinoes to a fair in the country and races many tents with refreshments and dancing people from all parts of the country flocked and a very animated scene it was fair damsels under charge of their sweethearts or lovers and sprightly dame with her shadow not husband he playing the tender to some other man's wife" p77. He also keeps a constant mention of other ships they meet or travel with which provides a first-rate way of cross-referencing other ship's records. On Sept 9th 1827 Fullerton along with some other officers attended the theatre in Valparaiso Chile. He goes into a dispute with a Chilean sergeant which continued to escalate until he shot and killed the sergeant. After a bloody fight in the lounge area of the theatre he escaped wounded to his ship. In reprisal English officers ashore were rounded up and imprisoned. A week later he surrendered to authorities and a jailed until a Spanish court-martial could be convened. At length he was acquitted. What makes this account so historically interesting is that included with the manuscript is the typed statement of the British Consul John White who acted in his defense. The 13 page document is typed on 8 1/2 inch by 14 inch paper and is in excellent condition. It begins: "John White Esq Consul of His Britannic Majesty counsel for Lieutenant John Fullarton Royal Navy accused of having killed Sergeant Jose Maria Minos present the following to the court in justification of the act committed by the said officer ." p1. The defense makes for fascinating reading. It is accompanied by a 46 page packet containing 8 pages of handwritten notes which were part of the original draft. For a naval historian this is an outstanding description of service in the Royal Navy written by an officer with a keen eye for descriptive detail. Written at a time when the Royal Navy truly ruled the oceans of the world it is a treasure trove for information. Whether ship locations customs in foreign lands or life on board it is an outstanding primary source document. The court-martial defense is an excellent example of litigation argument in the early 19th century. It touches on key aspects of self-defense argument that forms the basis for the common law that governs millions of people today. ‎CHARLES CITY IOWA EUROPE. Good. 1912. On offer is the handwritten travel diary of John G. Legel Jr. who is from Charles City Iowa. He sails for Europe on June 15th 1912 only two months after the sinking of the Titanic. John spends his summer touring Europe arriving back home on September 6th 1912. His diary contains almost 100 handwritten pages over 50 leaves and details his voyage over on the boat and all of his memorable events while in Europe and also the trip back. Here are snippets: Up too late for breakfast. Slept poorly. Passed three boats by 9:30 3 sails quite close. Land Africa 3 smokes sighted by 10:00. Land quite close to port side. 3 more boats there. Too thick to mention. Big rock in sight….Arrived at Gibraltar. Went ashore by the tender "Guille" of N.G.L. line. Saw a number of curio stores thick as can be. Sun very hot. Street venders of postcards newspapers fruit and flowers thick. Bot flowers and a little fruit. Also a N.Y. newspaper dated 6/20/12. Beat down the price of 2 bunches of flowers from 25 cents to 10 cents. Saw laces sold for less then half the prices first asked. Came aboard by tender at 5:30. Evening cool. Left Gibraltar at 8:30. Saw outline of opposite side of big rock. The pictures show the landward end. Too dark to see details. The lower half of the rock on the side we first saw was just covered with lights. Tried to get picture of a moor. He dodged across walk then held his hand up in front of his face. Moonlight very bright tonight. Phosphorescent lights back of boat have been very bright and numerous. Rooms changed. In with 2 others in 4th engineer's room. Two others put in room where we were." "June 26th It is reported that a woman in steerage had died and that she was buried after midnight last night. Ship pitches quite a good deal. Latest report says it was a woman in I Cabin who died. No relatives but 2 maids on board with her. Repacked to send telescope to Bremen. Saw Sardinia. Not many houses. Headlands high and mountains. Took 3 pictures of a party of 7." "June 27th Naples due about noon. Steerage people are packing and most everyone is getting ready. Series of islands and small boats galore. Landed about noon. A man from Muller took us to customs house. Never opened grips. Cab to hotel Pension Muller. Fine rooms facing bay. Tile floors. Twin beds. Living like "Lords". Dinner at 7:30 bought postcards. Bed 11:00." "June 29th Early breakfast. Up Vesuvius by Cook's route. Vesuvius to Pughaino by tram. Then by Cook's electric railway up to Cog rail pusher. Electric on up to foot of cone. Cable up to last stop 55%. Path up to brink of crater. Not bad walking. Had lunch at Erems on way back. Back to Naples about 3:30. Walked a while then cab to Muller. Cabby tried to triple meter reading instead of doubling it. We were wise but not as wise as we thought fair should have been 20 cents more then meter reading for 3 persons." "July 6th 9:00 O'clock train for Florence. Bot cheese and rolls to eat on train. Found cheese full of bugs. Arrived at Florence 2:30. Hotel Rome. Got a little lunch. Slept till dinner. Walked around main part of town." "July 9th ……saw ruins of Roman theatre. Beautiful view from train going up. Five miles up hill. Rather nice and plain but dark church there. Back in time for dinner. Took a little walk watched crowds and listened to a ladies orchestra. During the day only those who have to be out are on the streets but about 6 p.m. they begin to come out and by 9:00 p.m most stores are closed and the streets and café's are crowded." His journal was a 3 ¼" x 5" maroon tablet type diary. The pages are still attached together but the first page is almost loose and the cover is also coming loose at the spine. ‎Piercton Warsaw Bone Prairie Indiana IN. Fair. 1862. On offer is a superb handwritten Civil War homefront diary of a young man who lives in Pierceton Indiana who heads to Warsaw and Bone Prairie to teach school. On the very first page we read "John Galbreath's Day Book Bought in Warsaw Indiana of Mr. Lemon. March 26th 1862." He ends a year later on April 1st 1863. Although he's not a soldier this is one of the most unique and well written 'homefront' diaries we have ever read. Mr. Galbreath provides an intimate and a detailed emotional picture about what life must have been like for this young man during this terrible time when so many families were torn apart. There are a full 90 pages of personal and heartfelt entries and daily accounts of what his life was like; plus many fascinating war entries and super commentary and opinion from this young man and especially riveting account of the Battle of Pittsburgh Landing. Here are snippets: "March 26th I came to Warsaw this morning upon the train. Mr. Fletcher State Superintendent of Public Instructions addressed a congregation of teachers and directors on the subject of education at the Union School House. This afternoon at one o'clock and tonight he is to lecture on the same at the Methodist Church." "March 27th I staid with Otis Pratt last night. He and wife are both sick with Typhoid Fever. I arose early this morning and walked to the river where we use to go swimming while attending school in Warsaw. I visited Mrs. Cowan's school this forenoon and had an interesting interview with the teachers. Found the school progressing finely. Got aboard the train at 11 o'clock and soon found myself in Pierceton." "May 15th Last evening Mrs. Loring gave a party in honor to Alfred before he returns to the army. He started on his return last night." "July 4th Friday morning fifteen minutes after four. I have shot the gun blowed the horn beat the old tin broke to sung songs and what to get at next. Doke and I moved to Warsaw today for the purpose of going to school. Heard Gov. Wright speak for three hours on the crisis. He goes in wholly and solely for putting down rebellion." "October 14th This is election day. The election passed off quietly. J.T. Doke Charlotte Galbreath and I moved to Warsaw today for the purpose of attending school. Turner and I spent the day in fixing up the bed and stove &c. Warsaw is full of soldiers. They expect to leave on the midnight train." "November 29th Snowed a little last night. We are on our road to our school in a sleigh but we find it poor sleighing indeed. Eat dinner at Mr. Gunter's where Martin is going to board. 4 by the watch. We are at Mr. Berst's the trustees waiting for him to come home from Warsaw. Mr. Berst arrived home about dark." "December 1st I commenced school this morning. I am unacquainted with my pupils their parents and even the school house. All things are strange to me here on Bone Prairie and I feel the need of some kind friend to take me by the hand and speak words of encouragement but I must rally my courage and cheer up with the idea that I am engaged in a noble work. My earnest desire is that I may do good and benefit the pupils under my care. May I ever for the end and may God help me in my humble endeavor." "December 17th A small skiff of snow fell last night. Several of us met last evening and organized a debating club in Oswego. Question for next evening resolved that Intemperance is a greater evil than slavery. Jos. v Cowan affirmative. M. v. Galbreath denies. 4 o'clock in the evening. I had a visitor today. Mr. Lieutenant Lew Rickeson called on me today and I was uncommonly glad to see him." 1863 "February 13th A fine day. Evening quite a company of young folks are at Mr. Beagles enjoying the unfair nicknaks. Playing and kissing the girls are the order of the evening until 3 o'clock." "March 19th Jas. K. Polk Phillips was buried today. Quite a large concourse of people were at the funeral. Polk was well respected and had a great number of friends in his native neighborhood. Yesterday I helped take up an infant corpse. It had been buried 15 years." Although the diary entries stop on April 1st 1863 there is a 7 page entry in the back having to do with a friend of his who died on July 30th. He titles it "Sanford is dying". I want to quote a bit of it here: "I and my friend H. had retired and after spending near half the night in conversation had exhausted nature and fell into a deep sound sleep. Presently I was awakened from my slumber by my father calling me by name. I arose instantly for a sad strange feeling came over me and I felt that something uncommon had happened. Whether or not this strange feeling was the result of my being awakened at that time of night I am not prepared to say. Certain it is I have been called up at all times of night and never before did my feelings so completely warn and impress me with the idea that bad news were in store. I instantly dressed and prepared to go to the sick chamber. My friend H concluded to go with me so accompanied with him and my father we repaired to the bedside of the dying boy. On our way we over took several of the neighbors going to see the dying Sanford. An inquiry here presented itself to my mind. Why all this stir.The sequel is the boy is dying and departed this life in about two hours after we entered the sick chamber. Not however until he had called his friends around him and talked of Heaven and his departure. After taking leave of his friends he composed himself quietly on his dying bed and in a few moments "Sanford is dead." He goes on with several pages more about Sanford and the entry takes on a religious tone. Then on the very back page is a fascinating account as it is taking place about the battle of Pittsburg landing: "April 1862 Great excitement prevails at present caused by the great battle of Pittsburg landing Tenn. This battle was fought April 6 1862. The Federal forces were commanded by Grant Wallace Buell and others. The rebels were commanded by Beauregard Johnson and Jackson. The slaughter on both sides was great. Among the killed is Wallace and Johnson. Later. Wallace is reported not dead yet. Island No. 10 was unconditionally surrendered to the Northern army on the 7th. 3000 prisoners taken and an amount of military stores. April 12 the public mind is trained to the last bent. Great events are just in advance and large armies are in sight of each other and evidently are on the eve of a great battle at Corinth. April 15th The news from Pittsburgh Landing is startling. ______battle was right there with heavy blows on both sides." ‎LOCKPORT NEW YORK NIAGARA COUNTY. Fair. 1849. On offer is a super original 1849 - 1855 historic manuscript relic of Western New York being a handwritten journal and diary of John Gould who was a member of the New York Legislature in 1856. Hand dated September 16 1849 to June 10 1855 hand numbered 455 pages makes for a very full very detailed treasure trove of history for the Lockport Niagara County area of New York State. Gould's family were deeply ensconced in the Lockport economy: farming wheat and barley lumbering horses and all manner of other trading throughout the area. Trade economics commerce genealogy religion politics and local events are all detailed by a copious recorder of family daily doings and history. Gould also came back to the book using the free endpapers to leave notes on the death of his father mother building a new house on property bought in 1862 his son's Charles Gould service volunteering two years 29 August 1862 during the Civil War with the 44 Elsworth Regiment New York. The approximately 6 3/4" x 8 1/4" once gorgeous book is absolutely full handwritten in ink and features marbled endpapers raised bands original full leather with ornate trim. The exterior leather is quite worn spine leather well chipped and separated at the back cover. The spine backing is cracked. ‎Spring Hill Navarro County Texas TX 1867. This is a great post Civil War letter to Capt Charles E. Culver who was on the Savannah during the Tybee Blockades and from John H. Lippert asking for help in his mission. It mentions him giving the captain an introduction to Governor Pease of Texas. It mentions Stump Speeches and helping the "Colored People". What is ironic is that Captain Culver does not want the Rebs or Rebels to get the upper hand yet he fought on the Confederate Side from what our research regarding him during the Civil War. It also mentions that he will help if he can get a guard to keep him from being assassinated! When he mentions the Heirarch Lyon he is evidently referring the Nathanial Lyon according to our research on this subject. Great Reconstruction content. Here are snippets; Spring Hill Navarro Co Oct 21st 1867 ’s HDQT. I will be able to set you all right unless you have done something of which I am not aware. In that case of course I would fail to do you any good if Judge Waters is a Loyal Man as he professes to be. It does appear to me that he could be of great service to you at this time by making Public Speeches and instructing the colored people for the Judge is well informed and has a fine education and can doubtless make a fine Stump Speech. So he should stand by you in your efforts to sustain the Loyal Men in your District which I have every reason to believe you have done to the best of your ability for which I as a Loyal Man tender you my Thanks and Cordial Support and Cooperation in any way possible. And for your encouragement please permit me to say you have Thanks and Sympathy of all Loyal Men in Navarro County and let me say to you – Go on and faithfully discharge your duty and fear nothing but let your Watch Word be that of the Dying words of the Heirarch Lyon at Wilson’s Creek – Onward Boys – We’ll Whip Them Yet. Dear Capt. Yours of the 15th is at hand. I was not at home at the time or I should have went with you to Austin. But Permit me to say to you I will see Gov. Waters P.W. Hall F. H. Miller and Co that they do not stand by you and Counsel the Colored People in their duty. Are they weak kneed You are doubtless a ware of the duties I have to perform and I have 10 Counties to cerp on the right track. But I expect to Resign my Position in a few days and then I will take the Stump if I can get a guard to prevent assassination and for this object I will go to Austin next week. Friend Culver I said something to you about Capt J.J. Emerson when I was at your place and you remarked you knew me better than you did a half hour before. If I could now see you I could tell you something more and could apprise you of the cause of mutch of your trouble and from whence they came. I doubt mutch if you are not mistaken as to YOUR E. M. Pease. I received a letter from the Governor last night on the main points of his views. When I see him I will lay your case before him for I am fully aware that you have the most Rebellious District in the state. ‎ASEA ABOARD A WHALING SHIP. Poor. 1857. On offer is a super original manuscript letter dated March 12th 1857 addressed to Captain Perry C. Wing on the Bark Valapraiso on the Atlantic. Here is a partial transcription: Dear Brother I suppose that you are situated in a far better place than a whaling vessel for a living and for happiness in this life I have thought a great many times that I should like to be as well contented on shore as you are you don't know what a difference there is in living on the water some thousands of miles from home and friends or living ashore in all the luxuries and pleasures of a happy home if a man or a boy knows when he is well off when he is situated in a good place he had better not think of whaling for a living for it is poor business for a man to get a living by in these days there are advise you and all couldn't read that part other boys never to once think of whaling I should like to hear from you and know what kind of a place you have got I know that you have got a better place than I have got if you have got any place at all for here they are cussing you up hill and down all the time There is no peace for the good or bad here for they will cuss you for doing a thing right and if you do it wrong they will cuss you so much the harder for it. sometimes I have a great mind to run away when we get in port and then I think it all over and let it drop and try to make the best of it. the mate and Captain are cussing on another all the time and one says he wishes the other was in hell and the other says the same and so they keep it up all the time the second mate says that he will leave the vessel before long if there is not better work and most all the crew will leave to. I expect and I do not blame them for doing so. and so things goes and look pretty gloomy sometimes it is enough to make one heart sick to look at. things for me have no oil nor have not seen any thing that looks like a sperm whale since we were out and I don't know as we ever shall. we are now bound into for water and couldn't read to curl and paint the ship. and I expect we shall get a few days sun ashore to knock the scurvy out of our bones and then when we come out I expect we shall go into the Indian Ocean and cruise next season and try our luck there at whaling It is some 4 months since I left home and I have been as well as usual in the past time and I hope you have enjoyed good health and a happy time to. The selenographic maps noted I II III inserted on page 140 are reproduced respectively from the works of: Hevelius 1645 Royal Academy of Sciences 1692 and Grimaldi/Riccioli. Contemporary full brown sheep binding. Decorated spine with raised bands. Brown sheep title label. Upper joint narrowly cracked for most of its length. Lower joint split at head and tail. Boards rubbed and scuffed with some lacks. Corners very bumped and trimmed worn. Scattered worming. The treatise is preceded by a dissertation on recent progress in astronomy. On offer is a remarkable extensive 19th Century manuscript archive of handwritten music collected written and compiled by British composer John Lang renowned for his composition "Joy and Peace". Some later items in the group were likely added by his son James and daughter Emily. There are hundreds the pile is about 3 inches thick of handwritten and printed pages of classical music with most of the pages are arrangments done by Lang of classical pieces by Haydn Mozart and Beethoven among others. There are many pages of Beethoven's Egmont and a handwritten arrangement of Don Juan. There are a few original compositions of John Lang and I noticed a short signed piece by Arthur David Freedman a composer from Minnesota which is from 1921 much newer than the rest. The majority of this work was done in the early 1800s; there are a couple from the 1870s and the 1921 work of Freedman. The condition varies there is foxing chipping and some staining and there could be a few missing pages. ‎1820 School District Bill for Dutchess County New York Representing a Rare Surviving Look Into the Early Days of Academic Operations under the Common School Law‎

‎AMENIA NEW YORK Dutchess County. Fair with no dust jacket. 1820. Manuscript. On offer is a rare piece of surviving ephemera from the early 19th century school district system of Amenia Dutchess County New York. The document is a school accounting document recording the households in school district No. 19 Amenia the days of school attended cost and payment. It was kept and signed by school instructor John M. Wheeler. The first three households on the record are sons of Revolutionary War Captain Noah Wheeler including Anthony Wheeler 1771-1840 Thomas Newcomb Wheeler 1773-1844 and David Wheeler 1782-1823. These are followed by other Dutchess County Wheelers and neighbouring families such as the Barretts and Colmans. Condition: Measures approximately 7.75 inches x 7.5 inches. It is intact and fully legible save from the number of days attended and amount paid by the Lownberry household which has been carefully cut out. It contains age toning and and fold lines consistent with its age. History of the New York Common School System: New York’s common school system began in earnest with the Common School Act of 1812 which created a statewide framework for publicly supported elementary education. The law established the office of State Superintendent of Common Schools divided towns into school districts and provided state aid that local communities were expected to match. Its goal was to make basic education more regular organized and widely available rather than leaving schooling entirely to private academies churches or scattered local efforts. The system was strengthened by the 1814 law which made the common school fund permanent and helped secure public schooling as a lasting part of New York civic life. Notes on the Dutchess County Wheelers: Among the Dutchess County Wheelers was the lineage directly descended from Captain Noah Wheeler 1743-1823. Captain Noah Wheeler born in Connecticut to Captain Thomas Wheeler 1715-1754 and Eunice Gates 1718-1787. Thomas Wheeler fought in the French and Indian War and died in Fite Miller tavern on his way home on September 1 1757. Noah Wheeler fought in the Revolutionary War under Colonel David Southerland. He was a member of the 6th Regiment Charlotte Precinct Dutchess County Militia. He was noted as being ranked First Lt. On March 30 1778 and made Captain June 25 1778. Noah Wheeler married Eunice Newcombe 1748-1812 also of Dutchess County. Together they had at least 12 children. His sons including Anthony and Thomas Newcomb were all farmers who built strong estates in New York State. ‎1914 ORIGINAL CHARMING LETTER HAND WRITTEN BY A FORMER CONFEDERATE COLONEL WHO WOULD ONE DAY BE THE LAST MEMBER OF THE CONFEDERATE CONGRESS‎

‎OCALA FLORIDA. Good. 1914. On hand is a rare 2-page letter written by a Confederate Colonel long after the Civil War. Measuring 10 inches by 8 inches this letter consists of 2 sheets each written on one side only. The first page had a piece torn out of the upper right corner but it does not touch the written portion. Otherwise the letter is in fine condition. The letter was written by John Martin a resident of Ocala FL. Research indicates that this was Colonel John Marshall Martin. Martin was born March 18th 1832 in the old Beaufort district Hampton County in South Carolina moved to Marion county in 1855 and passed away in 1921 at the age of 89. He served in the American Civil War. He was a member of the Confederate Congress Captain of Martin's Light Artillery and served as Colonel of 9th Florida Regiment. Martin served under General Robert E. Lee and surrendered with Lee at Appomattox Courthouse Virginia. When he died he was the last living member of the Confederate Congress. Following the war Martin returned to Ocala where he lived out his life respected by his community. Dated March 7th 1914 he writes to an unnamed cousin in response to a letter he has received. Martin who is 82 expresses pleasure on hearing about the good health of another cousin. He talks almost wistfully about the difficulties in staying in contact: "It gives me much pleasure to hear from my relatives the old ones living as well as the younger ones; but such is life as we grow up we scatter see or hear of each other but seldom and thus pass over the river and forgotten"; ". what a pity loved ones can't abide with each other in this life". It is a lovely letter written with fondness and affection. For historians this is a valuable piece of the written history of Florida.
