While I cannot guarantee that it matches the catalogue description exactly with 'some spotting mostly at margins contemporary maroon morocco gilt slightly rubbed. ‎C1915 ORIGINAL GROUP of DOCUMENTS PERTAINING to the MILITARY SERVICE of a LANCE CORPORAL in the 5TH BATTALION of the CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE 2ND BRIGADE A. K. a "TUXFORD'S DANDIES" WHO WAS SERIOUSLY WOUNDED and SPENT over a YEAR AT MILITARY HOSPITA‎

‎Good. 1936. On offer is a collection of 19 historically significant documents pertaining to military service of Herbert Arscott including a war-time photo a booklet with handwritten notes an active service pay book and post-war correspondence from the Board of Pension Commissioners for Canada. These documents represent milestones of his wartime experience and also of many Canadians fighting in the Great War. As the majority of Canadian soldiers at that time Herbert Arscott was born in Britain in the town of Wellington and enlisted almost immediately after the war was declared. He served at the 5th battalion of the 2nd infantry brigade hailed from western Canada and known as "Tuxford's Dandies" after the name of its first commander. Arscott made a few notes of dates and locations in a small book titled "Diary and memoranda": on September 17th he arrived at Quebec spent two days in smaller camps on the 22nd started training at Valcartier a training base for over 32000 volunteers from across Canada who were formed into the Canadian Expeditionary Force and eight days later boarded the SS Laplandia the largest in the transport convoy of the 31 ships set to cross the Atlantics. They arrived in Plymouth on October 14th and in early November he already was in Bailleul in Northern France which is the last note in the diary. The diary also contains a poem from George Cary Eggleston's "Rebel's collection" starting: "I was frightened for a wind crept along the grass…" Arscott's battalion entered the war theater in February 2015 participating in the Second Battle of Ypres from April 15th to May 25th it is not mentioned if Arscott was involved in that battle but the documents show that in the middle of May he was wounded. It is clear from his pay book and passes that he spent spring and summer of 1916 at the Granville Canadian Special Hospital in Ramsgate a seaside town in Kent a photograph showing him in a wheelchair most likely was taken in front of that hospital and then in Folkestone - a note on his pass says: "Recuperation. Excused wearing puttees" because of the leg wound. While in England he probably got married - in 1915 he named as his next of kin Mrs. Arscott C. N who lived in West Indies but later a line was added in his pay book with the name and address of his wife in Surrey. In 1918 he returned to Canada where he was taken to the Civil Service for six months but since 1920 all correspondence was addressed to the U. S. first to Brooklyn and later to Ohio. The post-war documents cover the period until 1952 and are related to his pension and insurance policy. The collection includes the following documents: 1. A red booklet titled "Diary and memoranda for 1914-1915: information relating to the wealth and population of the nations engaged and the strengths of their respective Armies and Navies Armaments etc. ; published by the Union Bank of Canada Valcartier Military Camp Branch. Contains hand-written notes. 31 pages size: 3'2x6'; condition: good 2. A booklet titled: Canadian Expeditionary Force 2nd infantry brigade headquarters and 5th Battalion : nominal roll of officers non-commissioned officers and men issued with militia orders 1915 25 p. size: 8'2x13'; condition: creases loose slight tears on the cover3. Pay book for use on active service containing records for 1915 - 1917. Size: 3.5'x5'' condition: good regular wear slight tears at edges4.3 passes dated May June and August 19165. A photo of a man in a wheelchair in front of what looks like a military hospital size: 3.2'x3.2' 6. Discharge certificate from Canadian Expeditionary Force slightly soiled at creases7. Certificate of qualification for temporary employment from Civil Service Commission of Canada dated October 25 1918. Condition: tears at creases slightly soiled size: 7.5'x11'8. A printed letter from the Board of Pension Commissioners for Canada in London on a letterheaded paper dated December 6 1918 containing 2 pages size: 8'x13'9. A printed letter addressed to Paymaster Casualties in Toronto dated August 31 1918 and signed by a representative of the Whitby Military Hospital condition: good size 6.5'x8'10. Adjustment of pension from the Board of Pension Commissioners for Canada and Authority for pension payment dated February 20th 1920 addressed to Mr. Herbert Arscott in Brooklyn N. Y. 2 pages 8'x13'11. A booklet titled: Information of former members of the Canadian and British Forces resident in the United States of America published in Ottawa in 1921 16 pages size 6.6'x10'; condition: tears at edges and creases water stains.12. This small diary covers the historically fascinating period of January to December 1929 encompassing the onset of the Great Depression. It is an excellent resource for an urban historian painting an intimate picture of the life of a retired couple right at the time when things would begin to go terribly wrong for both Buffalo and the American economy. Stevens’s lengthy diary entries describe his life in rich detail: “Has been a cool day and I have stayed inside a good share of it and had a time getting fire to burn enough to keep us warm . . . ” Feb 10 1929 “This AM was up early as did not feel good took a walk later did some few things around the house also got some things stood in need of and also did a lot of fixing up. ” Apr 13 1929 “As Eva went in town to see about some things was gone most of day and and didn’t get at real work til home again about 8: 30 then spaded a while also few things needed care and later lissened a nice hour of music . . . ” May 20 1929 “Mostly cool today Up early for me and did a lot of small things needed doing also went to store after for eats - though got only a few myself but rather gave Edward possibly his youngest son Edward b 1914 a five dollar bill to use . . . ” Aug 9 1929Stevens was born in Evans New York in 1857 and lived in Buffalo with his wife Eva. Together they raised a family of 4 children. A City of Buffalo Directory indicates that Stevens was an engineer. He passed away in 1938 at the age of 81 and his wife passed away the same year. At the onset of the Great Depression Buffalo New York had 573000 inhabitants making it the thirteenth-largest city in the United States. Because of its location and the proximity of the Erie Canal connecting it to New York City Buffalo had become an industrial powerhouse. However with the Great Depression came severe unemployment especially among working class men. President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal relief programs operated in full force but the city’s days as a great industrial center had passed and the population declined precipitously after World War Two never to recover. The diary measures 5.25 inches by 2.75 inches and contains 121 pages. The covers and pages are in good condition. The binding is intact but the spine is cracked. 'Mercure de France' was originally a French review founded in the 17th century under the name 'Mercure Galant' which would evolve to become a publishing house in the 20th century. Under the impetus of Rémy de Gourmont and Alfred Jarry a literary review revived the name 'Mercure de France' in 1890 and offered symbolist texts notably by Jean Moréas Ernest Raynaud Jules Renard Louis Dumur. Gradually gaining recognition this review would publish both the greatest Parnassians Baudelaire Rimbaud Verlaine Mallarmé Heredia etc. and witness the emergence of Jarry's Pataphysics. The publishing house was born in its wake. It notably published the first works of Gide and Claudel of Colette of Apollinaire of Georges Duhamel Mercure de France unknown‎

Publisher's red cloth. Exceptional inscribed copy signed by H.G. Wells to André Citroën: “To André Citröen who has to do his share in making a new world out of a very shattered old one. From H. G. Wells.” The inscription echoes the chapter of the book entitled New arms for old ones in which Wells describes the armament factory created by Citroën to remedy the French artillery weakness. Reconverted at the end of the war the factory will become the first Citroën automobile manufacturer. A superb testimony to the early friendship between the industrialist André Citroën and the writer H.G. Wells who in this very work dedicates a chapter to the new ammunition factory devised by Citroën as well as to the social progress he brings to his some thirteen thousand “munitionnettes.” War and the Future a work of propaganda written at the heart of the First World War brings together diverse observations on the ongoing conflict highlighting the radical change that the new armament technologies are bringing to the art of warfare. Wells states his theory of a new world scientific and technical order which already ran through his science-fiction masterpieces at the end of the last century War of the Worlds The Time Machine. As for Citroën having understood the crucial importance of the artillery in modern warfare he made a bet in 1915 to compete with the power of the Krupp armament factories. Abandoning his automobile factory project during the war he builds at his own cost an immense industrial complex on the Quai de Javel which produced 23 million shells for the allied forces. War and the Future bears the marks of Wells' admiration for Citroën whom he met the year before during his tour of Europe for the writing of this book: “He is a compact active man in dark clothes and a bowler hat with a pencil and a notebook conveniently at hand. He talked to me in carefully easy French and watched my face with an intelligent eye through his pince-nez for the signs of comprehension” page 141. The writer contrasted the immobility of the Front which he visited in 1916 to the incredible dynamism of the Citroën factory a veritable temple of modern industry which he describes as “The busy sheds of Paris struck me as being the most living and active things in the entire war machine” page 139. These few hours spent with this pioneer of military engineering had a considerable impact on the writer who saw him as an innovator speeding up the construction of the modern world. As the war ended Citroën brought an end to the production of weapons and founded the famous Citroën company making the factory his first automobile manufacturer. As with other personalities such as Joséphine Baker or Rudolph Valentino H. G. Wells became a regular customer of Citroën cars and remained a fervent admirer of the genius that was its founder. Produced at the start of the 20th century Wells' superb handwritten inscription to Citroën on the work that celebrates his visionary talents testifies to the admiration of a man who dreamed of the future for those who made it happen.
