Gurdon Saltonstall Hubbard 1802 – 1886 was an American fur trader insurance underwriter and land speculator. Hubbard first arrived in Chicago on October 1 1818. He went on to build Chicago's first stockyard and help foment a land boom for Chicago in the East. On several trips throughout Illinois he became the adopted son of Chief Waba of the Kickapoo and married Watseka niece of Chief Tamin of the Kankakee Potawatomi. After he walked for 75 miles in a single night to warn the town of Danville of an impending raid by Indians he earned the nickname "Pa-pa-ma-ta-be" or "Swift-Walker." When a local Indian tribe questioned his ability to perform this feat he challenged their champion walker to a race. Hubbard's challenger lost by several miles and was unable to move the next day. Hubbard seemed to be unaffected. . Former owner's signature stamp on ffep otherwise unmarked gilt bright a few pages very lightly soiled corners sharp tight and square. NEAR FINE. . First Published After The Beginnings Of Dianetics After Hubbard Stopped Writing Science Fiction. Signed In Aging Blue Ink At The Top Of Page Six The First Of Two Title Pages For "The Masters Of Sleep." This Copy Was Signed For His Agent Forrest Ackerman At A Luncheon Meeting. Any Magazine Appearances Signed By Hubbard Are Rare; We Are Unaware Of Any Other Copy Of This Story Signed By Hubbard Ever Being Offered For Sale; Hubbard Had Already Begun His Intense And Exclusive Involvement With Dianetics By The Time The Story Was Published And He Apparently Did Not Return To Science Fiction Until The Mid To Late 1970'S. The Signature Compares Favorably With Other Hubbard Signatures From This Time And Authenticity Is Guaranteed. Includes an important introduction and extensive bibliographical notes on hundreds of artists. Volumes 1-2 German school; volumes 3-4 Italian school; volumes 5-6 Dutch and Flemish school; volumes 7-8 French school; volume 9 English school. Complete with the rare 38-page index to the first six volumes published later and often missing indexes to volumes 7 to 9 are included in the regular pagination of those volumes and are of course present. Additional manuscript index to volumes 1-2 surely done years before printed index was published. The first 40 pages of volume I supply the earliest critical bibliography of general works on prints with many works described in exhaustive detail. The ninth volume present here is very rare: even Cicognara didn't have it and apparently didn't know about it. 8vo. Bound in contemporary tree calf first volume bound in matching but slightly darker calf. Light wear to bindings but very attractive. Various indexes added in manuscript on flyleaves and inserted leaves in a contemporary hand. Internally clean. A very good set. Published over the course of eleven years by three publishers in three countries complete sets are very rare. Brunet III 357; Bourcard 81: "Nous estimons très particulièrement cet ouvrage. Il y a beaucoup de renseignements et une longue introduction de 80 pages qu'on ne saurait lire sans en tirer profit. Il est assez difficile de trouver l'ouvrage complet. The book has a previous owner's name at the top of the half title page and also the date bought the amount paid and donated to a local public library is written in the gutters of the book. There are lost of pigment spots on the cloth on the front and back panel I found no other markings; and the pages are clean and white and the corners are sharp. The binding is tight. The dust jacket has a small nick at the top of the spine. Color on jacket is excellent and jacket is now covered with a mylar sleeve. Inscribed and signed on the title page. 592pp. illustrations afterword notes index. Comes to you in an acid free document bag for storage mailed boxed and I can have it in the mail tomorrow.
