ARIZONA USA AZ. Good. 1910. On offer are four 4 handwritten manuscript diaries and one journal starting December 6th 1910 to Aug 29 1913 detailing the intimate emotional thoughts and feelings of a young Arizona woman on her journey to become a woman during the early years of the 20th century prior to and during and in a later book after the Great War. Historians and collectors of Arizona history will be delighted as Jennaveve proves to be an utterly charming young woman who gives a superb sense of the Arizona Territory as it enters the Union in 1913 as the 48th State and in the same year women's suffrage also comes to Arizona. However Miss John does not seemed charmed by her new life after high school enough to lament she wishes she had never left high school. Besides her heartfelt thoughts and observations one finds dotting the journals are numerous hand drawn pictures newspaper clippings dried flowers and other illustrations. She talks about school boys her friends and loved ones. Also included is a book also by the same young girl on the front it reads P.T.A. and records some meetings some study notes and a series of clippings featuring the Presidents of the United States including Thomas Jefferson James Madison James Monroe John Quincy Adams Andrew Jackson Martin Van Buren William Henry Harrison John Tyler James Knox Polk Zachary Taylor Millard Fillmore Franklin Pierce James Buchanan Abraham Lincoln Andrew Johnson Ulysses Simpson Grant Rutherford Birchard Hayes James Abram Garfield Chester Alan Arthur Grover Cleveland Benjamin Harrison Theodore Roosevelt Woodrow Wilson and Herbert Clark Hoover. 1886 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HAND WRITTEN BY A HARDWORKING UPSTATE NEW YORK TEENAGE GIRL
Boonville NY. Good. 1886. On offer is a very interesting diary kept by a young woman in upstate New York in 1886. Measuring 5 3/4 inches by 3 1/2 inches the slim volume contains about 150 pages including memoranda. The diary portion is 100% complete. The covers binding and pages are all in good condition. The handwriting is legible. Tucked into the diary are three newspaper clippings. These are obituaries published in the local papers. Two refer to the death of her mother in 1914. The third refers to a man who is possibly related to her by marriage. There are also 2 photographs in the diary - 1 is a family grouping and the other is a portrait of a young woman. Research confirms that the picture of the young woman is indeed Jennie Bacon. Interestingly in the same pocket that held the photographs was a folded paper package that contains a small calibre bullet casing. The flyleaf is inscribed "Jennie Bacon Layden NY Jan 4th 1886". Research establishes that she was born in 1870 in Iowa. Her family moved to Lewis County NY at some time in her early life. This makes her 16 when she began to keep this diary. She lives at home on a farm with her parents and her brother Arthur. Jennie Bacon passed away in 1949. The year opens with her attending a local school which she enjoys very much. Interspersed with her daily attendance are the many tasks that she carries out daily: "Pleasant and warm. Up at six. Washed the dishes and went to school. Had nearly all my lessons good. Knit some on my mittens. Got a certificate of vaccination today had a good time at school today. Pa went to Boonville and got the mechanic today" Jan 18 "Snowed and blowed late going to school this morning some drifts half way up the house sides. Up half past seven. Went to school had a very good time but way behind in my lessons. I wanted to stop History but Mr. Wadleigh would not let me. He lent me the history he had" Jan 21. Mid-march her schooling comes to an end and daily entries revolve mostly around the seemingly unending tasks of keeping the house: "Rained most all day. Up ten min past six. Went to school today and it is my last day this term. Felt very badly did not like to leave." Mar 19. ". Sarah and I have worked hard all day. We cleaned the parlour hall closet and cellar . I am very tired tonight" May 21. "Her entries describe cooking cleaning sewing and farm tasks such as milking making cheese and churning butter. ". Did the mornings work then I went to washing got it all out before dinner put away the wash things . ground coffee made biscuits hunted eggs sprinkled clothes in the evening set up my skirt again. I am sure tired tonight" Oct 11. This diary is very well-written and gives and excellent detailed account of the tasks and responsibilities of maintaining a home in rural America in the late 19th century. It is rich in detail. There are a great many references to local people and local places which can provide valuable cross-referencing. Enosburg Vermont. Fair. 1938. Full-Leather. On offer is a charming archive of three 3 diaries - 1938 1939 and 1953 all handwritten by a woman named Jennie C. Ransom of Enosburg Vermont. She wrote nearly every day with the exception of the last week of the year. She mentioned the names of many people in her community. In the back of her diary she kept a ledger of her salary income and her expenses/purchases. Jennie lived with her mother Ethel M. Stevens and refers to her as "M" in her entries. She had an adult son George 33 yrs old in 1953 who came to their home often. And Jennie and her mother still washed and ironed his clothes for him. Jennie seems to have suffered from depression often writing that she felt blue very tired and 'mean.' But she seems to have kept herself busy - she worked at a clothing store and did the cooking cleaning and gardening when she got home from work. When she did have some free time she went blackberrying picked currants played cards wrote letters crocheted attended band concerts and horse shows watched television went for auto rides and took a vacation in Canada. The following are some partial entries from her diary: Dorothy called me Albert Perley has passed away in Florida.Geo does not like it because I am not interested in a new car.I feel rather blue.a.m. at work M got mad at me as soon as I got home.Albert Perley's funeral. George traded cars.Geo came about 9 he smashed his new car up.M got up at 6:30 and washed Geo clothes I ironed was awful blue all day.A couple of girls from Burlington called on Geo p.m. .Geo went to dance by the lake.Archies people took us up to the cemetery.I felt mean.Geo came and we went to the lake. He went over to P___ they had a lobster feed he left some for M & I.I painted front steps and name on mailbox was awful tired and blue.Geo had gone to Burlington. Am at work and blue as ever.M had a spell lay down most of the time.M fell by grapevine they called me home. Had her shoulder put in place.J Stone came up for a hand out.Carroll came to watch World Series.Mrs. Sabouriere was buried awful blue.I was nervous all day.Cloudy and as usual worked. Cash was under yesterday. S. was mad and asked me where it was.George came about 8 o'clock I did the washing. I have another good spell of blues.got disgusted was left to do all the work.Mother had a bad spell in p.m. She felt very bad when she went to bed.feel like a cold and very nervous and unhappy. The 1953 diary is approximately 2 1/2" x 4" and had a red leather cover. Somebody at some point in time put clear plastic tape on the binding to hold it together. Otherwise it's in good condition. This is a small size diary but Jennie's neat handwriting makes its easier to read. Oswego New York USA. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1914. Original Wraps. This is the handwritten personal diary of a young girl named Jennie I. Lee who was most likely in her mid-teens when she wrote in 1912 and 1914. The diary was a Christmas present to her from Mary Gardner. Jennie lived in upstate New York near Oswego. Other towns mentioned in her diary are Belleville Sandy Creek Woodville Adams Old Forge and Watertown. She wrote pretty consistently in her diary from New Year's Day 1912 until early June of that year. She skipped 1913 and picked up again on January 1 1914 writing just about every day until January 27th when she ran out of pages. Jennie's diary is full of the daily comings and goings of her large family and various visitors neighbors friends horses dogs stage coaches sleigh rides History regents exams funerals play rehearsals annagrams socials delivering milk gardening etc. Her diary gives a wonderful view of a girl's life nearly 100 years ago in New York farm country. Some excerpts: "Mama fixed a waist for me didn't get it quite done." "Mason and I went to schoolhouse to a valentine party in evening 31 children there and six ladies.Mason got prize for drawing best heart with man's face in it-handsome valentine.""Had an offer made me today." "Young people gave their play tonight. Had a fairly good turn out for the kind of night. Rec'd about $14." The writing is clear and legible. 1849 - 1854 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A KEEN EYED INTROSPECTIVE INDIANA SURVEYOR DETAILING HIS LIFE AND FAMILY HARDSHIPS OF TRAGIC ILLNESS WHO STILL SEES THE WONDERS OF THE WORLD WHILE VISITING THE NEW YORK CRYSTAL PALACE EXPOSITION
MISHAWAKA WOLF CREEK MARSHALL COUNTY INDIANA IN. Fair. 1849. Offered is a super original manuscript diary dated August 1849 through to a final tragic entry in April 1854. The diary was handwritten by an Indiana surveyor farmer politician and engineer who worked throughout Indiana Ohio and Illinois. While the 64 page book lacks any identifying signatures or inscription a tucked in scrap of what appears to be original poetry dated 1840 bears the name of Jeremiah Gould. The final 1854 entry is signed in a different hand with the initials V.G. likely the son Vernon which we believe adds credence to Jeremiah's authorship though more research should be done. The diary is a fascinating and a superb telling of the author's personal life and times as he writes not just of what has happened but also his thoughts about the family's future. We learn that it is a hard life given his family suffered many attacks of fever and disease and a super portrait of pre Civil War America and there is so much to it: he and fellow surveyors find an old Indian Battle ground while on a survey; political commentary about the Whig Party Daniel Webster including his own ambitions in local politics as he is elected to office. His children he writes about many times - Vernon Marietta and Robert. For example one of his sons Vernon leaves to study medicine. The town of Rochester is a focus of commentary often along with Mishawaka Wolf Creek and Marshall County and the Yellow River. In fact there is a great entry about crossing the river by horse. He writes about surveying his own land under an act of Congress of Sept 25th. The author was a part time teacher rancher and elected county surveyor in August 1851 surveying for a Solomon Pontius. He mentions in great detail his cattle sheep and trying to raise crops. He also describes the political climate of the day and his own philosophical thoughts. Here is a snippet: Fri April 23 Went to Richland to attend court for Mother. I never saw so many ignorant a set of men nor so disorderly a court as I saw today the justice was entirely incompetent to fill his office. I am satisfied that magistrates ought not to be elected to office. For in a great majority of cases incompetent persons will be elected over worthy and competent men while there is no one responsible for this impromptu choice. Today I had conversations with A.F. Smith related to political affairs we concluded to call a meeting of the Whig's of the county on the 22nd of March. This close's the year 1852- a year in which I have had many bright prospects and as many disappointments but on the whole out situation is somewhat improved I have paid off some debts made some valuable improvements upon my family and in the year to come we have all been blest with health. Sept 21 I left home for the east. Arrived in South Bend in the evening took carriage 40 minutes past 11 arrived Monroe in the morning. Took passage on board steamboat about 10 min and arrived in Cleveland about 4 pm and in the morning of the 23rd arrived in Buffalo. Gould also travels for his pleasure and edification particularly when he travels east and does a super job on two and a half pages of describing his trip to The World's Fair September 1853. This was the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations a World's Fair held in 1853 in what is now Bryant Park in New York City in the wake of the highly successful 1851 Great Exhibition in London. The New York Fair also had a Crystal Palace. He also went directly to the Mechanics Fair in Boston on September 30th and he writes a couple of short paragraphs. The tragedy contained in this diary is dramatic and saddening to read. Shortly after the author attends the World's Fair his wife suddenly gets ill and then dies of this illness. Within a year the Author perishes as well from "Typhus". In the Winter of 1851 I wrote to M.D. Smith of Ohio for a flock of sheep June 1st 1851 Vernon left home to study medicine under the instruction of Dr. Brokett July 5th I purchased 500 sheep of Smith. In the fall Vernon took a school over the river for three months. In December I commenced surveying my lands for Culua under an Act of Congress of Sept 25th. In Jan I was appointed Deputy county surveyor with the understating that I should have all the business of the county. I continued to to the County surveying until the August election. My sheep became diseased and we had a great deal of trouble with them and of the 500. I had little but 100 at shearing and all the wool was insufficient to pay the first installment of the purchase money a great disappointment. Wednesday 25th 1852 Finished the road and went across the woods to Montgomery's and thence to Barnes on the way there we passed by the remains of some shanties erected on the Indian Payment ground on the North side of Chippewa rock erected in 1836. In the afternoon surveyed a road from Barnes's to Warsaw Road. After the survey was finished as we were sitting upon a log near the Chippewa rock south of Martins Mr Montgomery picked out a bullet from a log about 4 inches from the outside of the log which had overgrown by 37 layers of wood. This circumstance gave rise from which I learned that about 50 years ago the Chippewa's and Pottawatomie had a battle at this place. Previous to that time the Chippewa occupied this county and had a town on the creek. The old town of Aubbunaublu township was also a Chippewa town. January 1st 1854 Eighteen hundred fifty three is passed away and what has it left me I have been totally successful in temporal affairs. Have diminished my debts have extended my acquaintances have visited the home of my youth and have been flattered with visions of future success but I have lost my nearest friend my family is broken up my plans for the future have been frustrated and sorrow has sent an arrow into my heart deeper that before." The 8 x 6.5 inch journal is basically disbound covers hanging by string loose pages but the text is complete and legible. Thin large "with best wishes / Maria Jeritza" in light black fountain pen on a pristine pink 6" X 3 3/4" autograph album leaf n.p. n.y. Very good. Although it could be bolder still a large and easily readable example. Boards stamped with arms and ciphers in the corners and triple fillet frame. Red edges. Paper browned. Skilful and fine restorations to headcaps joints and corners. Gilding faded in places. Good copy. Major figure of the 17th century Charles de Sainte-Maure was made Duke of Montausier and Peer of France in 1664 and received the appointment as tutor to the Dauphin in 1668. His marriage to the great précieuse of the time she who was called the incomparable Julie Julie d'Angennes was one of the great affairs of his life. It was for her that he composed La guirlande de Julie a collection of 62 madrigals composed by the most illustrious poets of the time including himself. The Duke of Montausier was finally the model for Molière's Misanthrope which is still today one of his claims to fame. As for the Duchess she was portrayed by Madeleine de Scudery in her novel: Artamène ou le Grand Cyrus. They both constitute eminent symbols of the century of Louis XIV. Jérôme Cardan or Girolamo Cardana is one of the great Italian humanists of the Renaissance. His work Arcana politica The Science of the World or Civil Wisdom appeared posthumously was very successful and went through several editions. Joh. Kastner hardcover
