Joris-Karl HUYSMANS
s. l. Paris 1878. Fine. s. l. Paris n.d. 14 mai 1878 9.80 x 13.40 cm un feuillet remplié Autograph letter signed by Joris-Karl Huysmans addressed to Léon Cladel 40 lines written in black ink on 4 pages on a folded sheet envelope included. A 2cm tear without loss inherent to the fold of the sheet. In this caustic letter entirely imbued with Huysmanian poetic writing the author regrets that Dutch-Belgian visitors to the Universal Exhibition keep him away from the Sèvres landscapes where Léon Cladel lives. « Je sors de chez Leconte de Lisle il a reçu votre livre couleur de sang » ""I have just left Leconte de Lisle's he received your blood-colored book"". The importance of Léon Cladel's work and personality esteemed friend of the great writers of the time is perceptible from these opening lines. The « livre couleur de sang » ""blood-colored book"" witness to Huysmans' poetic force which shines through even in his private correspondence refers to l'Homme-de-la-Croix-aux-Bufs published by Edouard Dentu in 1878 a novel which was moreover reread by Flaubert also intimate with Cladel. « Je vous serre la main de tout cur mon puissant orfèvre et vous invite pour notre bonheur à tous à forger encore de belles uvres. » ""I shake your hand wholeheartedly my powerful goldsmith and invite you for all our happiness to forge more beautiful works."" Émile Zola would take up this eloquent analogy in Cladel's funeral oration: « . de ces belles uvres impeccables qu'il lançait ouvragées comme des joyaux de haut prix » "". those beautiful impeccable works he launched wrought like precious jewels"". This same year 1878 sees the Universal Exhibition settle in Paris an event which Huysmans seems compelled to attend: « c'est l'invasion hollando-belge venue pour l'exposition qui me tient et m'empêche » ""it is the Dutch-Belgian invasion come for the exhibition that holds me and prevents me"". The author's position regarding Belgium and Holland is ambiguous: Dutch through his father Huysmans makes numerous family and artistic visits to these countries and he is recognized there for his critical writings on painting. » ""I run in search of hotel rooms for these barbarians with yellow fleeces and in the evening when I have a free minute I make them wander through the capital. They open eyes like plates and jabber admiring exclamations."". Suffocated by the city and its society « Tout ça ça peut être drôle mais ça m'obsède singulièrement. All that can be amusing but it obsesses me singularly. I hope it will finally cease and that I will reconquer a bit of that poor freedom of which I am so meagerly provided even in ordinary times"" Huysmans aspires to find nature again a desire which expresses itself through an elegiac exclamation: « Ah les coteaux de Sèvres ! Pardon ! » ""Ah the hills of Sèvres! Forgive me!"" A piquant letter from which emerge the themes dear to Huysmans' singular pen. unknown

« ah ! le foutu Dieu ! » Autograph letter signed to Camille Mauclair
Paris 1894. Fine. Paris 8 février 1894 10.60 x 13.50 cm un feuillet remplié Autograph letter of Joris-Karl Huysmans signed to Camille Mauclair 44 lines written in black ink 3 pages on a folded sheet handwritten correction of the author. Two restorations using strips of paper in high and low fold of the letter the second band very slightly affects a word of the text a fold inherent in the enveloping of the letter. A long and beautiful letter in which all Huysmans' respect and interest are shown for the writings of the young Symbolist generation. Both author and literary critic Huysmans embodies a central figure for young poets like the 22-year-old Camille Mauclair who sends him one of his first poetic collections: "" The chapter on the symbol is perfect ; it is certainly the first time that we explain and with such lucidity we put things back in place. "" Heart of the symbolism and the poetic fiber of Huysmans the music of the language is particularly honored both in the lyrics and in the author's writing: "" the pieces on death on sensuality are woven into the most vivid language . and the fine writer who found the cold and ethereal absentee who wrote such sentences: ""we strive to determine our true ghost in the tumult of appearances "". "" Introduced by the mention of the myth of Narcissus Symbolist figure par excellence the letter shows the philosophical questions that underlie the movement. « Narcissus is God - It is not very beautiful to contemplate the soul . It is true that you in a melancholy return on the vanity of being have shown in a vibrant page the actors of ourselves as we are. The mystical evocations direct to Satan and more ambiguous to God echo the literary conversion of Huysmans who in 1894 prepares the writing of En Route the first part of his trilogy during direct ""black book"" that is there : ""Ah! the damn God! Really that makes me dream of a literature that feeds less his Satan as you say to a literature of humility! "" Accustomed to digressive theoretical reflections on literature Huysmans concludes his letter with: "" At bottom I am stupid to quibble over ideas because in short all the ones we express and that we will make are already in d ' other times and they are more or less new depending on whether they are more or less forgotten but what is not done before you what you own is the way to coat them. And that's where I admire you wholeheartedly because those are your sentences. "" unknown

« vous êtes arrivé à rehausser la langue à la rendre ni inerme ni inerte. Et je sais combien c'est malaisé et rare cela ! » Autograph letter to Jacques Le Lorrain
Paris 1888. Fine. Paris 20 juin 1888 12.40 x 16.70 cm un feuillet Autograph letter signed addressed to Jacques Le Lorrain from Joris-Karl Huysmans 30 lines written in black ink on 2 pages. Manuscript correction by the author. Fold inherent to the letter's mailing. Remarkable letter with sometimes obscure remarks where Huysmans emphasizes the importance and rarity of the writing craft at work in the novel Nu by the cobbler-poet Jacques Le Lorrain. « In these times when people rush books in simple language - you know as well as I what these indigences mean - it is a pleasure to see elucidated sentences labored over expression delivered with forceps ». Sharp as usual Huysmans positions himself as a fierce defender of literary writing experienced as labor which contemporary production seems to be abandoning: « this concern is too exhausted by all and despised for me not to congratulate you on your care ». Accustomed to receiving works from his colleagues Huysmans endeavors to highlight the innovative particularities of each author he receives: « Many pages are truly curious. Lorgeral on the grass closing his eyes listening to the voices - it's fresh and absolutely accurate. The scene of Juliette's armpit kissing. This work so well explained of man's jealousy for the child are particular original corners of this book whose very scrupulous style has captivated me. ». The author Huysmans distinguishes himself here always attentive to the right measure necessary according to him for literary expression: « you have managed to enhance the language to make it neither powerless nor inert. And I know how difficult and rare that is! » unknown

1872 Matanzas Slave-Transfer Authorization Naming Félix African and Mariano Creole a Late-Slavery Certificate Signed by José Benítez
Matanzas Cuba. Good with no dust jacket. 1872. Non-Book. On offer is an original 1872 certificación de vigilancia issued in Matanzas to Doña Magdalena Bofill authorizing her to obtain official permission vista a la expedición for the transfer of two enslaved menFélix a forty-two-year-old of African birth and Mariano a twenty-six-year-old criollo Cuban-born from the southern district of Matanzas to the district of Lagunillas under the jurisdiction of Cárdenas. Signed by José Benítez Inspector of Vigilance Inspector de Vigilancia del Distrito del Sur the document bears the embossed official seal of that office and the blue Sello 8º fiscal stamp 2 ½ Pesetas 1871. It is numbered N. º 270443 and includes manuscript endorsements at the top Expediente n. º 628 / Obra 2/1872 / Carta de aviso together with a marginal clerks notation Gato N. º 55 likely an internal filing or registry code. Issued only six years before the formal abolition of slavery in Cuba 1880 this certificate represents the bureaucratic machinery of slaverys final phasewhen cédulas certificados de empadronamiento and licencias de traslado documented the internal movement of enslaved laborers between sugar districts. The MatanzasCárdenas corridor was one of the islands richest sugar regions and Lagunillas referred to a plantation zone inland from the port of Cárdenas. The identification of both an African-born and a Creole enslaved man typifies the generational overlap of Cubas late slave era when African survivors of the illegal trade coexisted with Cuban-born descendants on the same estates. The Chinese coolie trade a system of indentured labor that targeted young poor Chinese men operated from 1847 to 1874. Throughout this period African slavery was slowly being abolished around the world. The coolie trade was initiated by Britain and later dominated by both Britain and the United States. Chinese coolie laborers were sent to work in British American and Spanish colonies and the nature of the trade evolved throughout its 27-year operation due to social and political pressures. It took place primarily between Macao then under Portuguese rule and Havana Cuba and its manifests and certificates often mirrored the bureaucratic precision of the present document. A rare well-preserved example of Cubas late-slavery administrative system complete with seal stamp and clearly named enslaved individualsideal for institutional acquisition and teaching collections concerned with race labor and the mechanics of emancipation. Condition: Moderate foxing and ink oxidation typical of nineteenth-century Cuban paper; small wormholes not affecting legibility; embossed seal strong; fiscal stamp intact; manuscript bright and legible. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1 pages; Signed by Author . unknown

Original engraving created for the illustration of La Gazette du bon ton one of the most beautiful and influential fashion magazines of the 20th century celebrating the talent of French creators and artists during the flourishing of Art Deco. Famous fashion magazine founded in 1912 by Lucien Vogel La Gazette du bon ton was published until 1925 with an interruption during the War from 1915 to 1920 due to the mobilization of its editor-in-chief. It consists of 69 issues printed in only 2000 copies and is illustrated notably with 573 color plates and 148 sketches representing models by great couturiers. From their publication these luxurious publications ""s'adressent aux bibliophiles et aux mondains esthètes"" ""address themselves to bibliophiles and worldly aesthetes"" Françoise Tétart-Vittu ""La Gazette du bon ton"" in Dictionnaire de la mode 2016. Printed on fine laid paper they use a typeface specially created for the magazine by Georges Peignot the Cochin character adopted in 1946 by Christian Dior. The prints are created using the metallic stencil technique heightened in colors and some highlighted with gold or palladium. The adventure begins in 1912 when Lucien Vogel man of the world and fashion - he had already participated in the magazine Femina - decides to found with his wife Cosette de Brunhoff sister of Jean the father of Babar the Gazette du bon ton whose subtitle was then ""Art modes et frivolités"" ""Art fashion and frivolities"". ""In 1910 he observes there existed no fashion journal that was truly artistic and representative of the spirit of its time. I was therefore thinking of creating a luxury magazine with truly modern artists . I was certain of success because for fashion no country can rival France."" ""Un grand éditeur d'art. Lucien Vogel"" ""A great art publisher. Lucien Vogel"" in Les Nouvelles littéraires n°133 mai 1925. The magazine's success was immediate not only in France but also in the United States and South America. Originally Vogel thus brought together a group of seven artists: André-Édouard Marty and Pierre Brissaud followed by Georges Lepape and Dammicourt; and finally his friends from the École des beaux-arts who were George Barbier Bernard Boutet de Monvel or Charles Martin. Other talents quickly came to join the team: Guy Arnoux Léon Bakst Benito Umberto Brunelleschi Chas Laborde Jean-Gabriel Domergue Raoul Dufy Édouard Halouze Alexandre Iacovleff Jean Émile Laboureur Charles Loupot Maggie Salcedo. These artists mostly unknown when Lucien Vogel called upon them would later become emblematic and sought-after artistic figures. These same illustrators created the drawings for the Gazette's advertisements. The plates highlight and sublimate the dresses of seven creators of the period: Lanvin Doeuillet Paquin Poiret Worth Vionnet and Doucet. The couturiers provided exclusive models for each issue. Nevertheless some of the illustrations featured no real model but only the illustrator's idea of the fashion of the day. La Gazette du bon ton is a decisive stage in the history of fashion. Combining aesthetic rigor and plastic unity it brought together for the first time the great talents from the worlds of arts letters and fashion and imposed through this alchemy a completely new image of woman slender independent and audacious also carried by the new generation of couturiers Coco Chanel Jean Patou Marcel Rochas. Taken over in 1 Lucien Vogel éditeur unknown

A une ville morte - Poème manuscrit autographe signé de José Maria de Hérédia To a Dead City Autograph manuscript poem signed by José Maria de Heredia
1893. Fine. s. d. circa 1893 16 x 22.50 cm une feuille Sonnet autograph signed by José Maria de Heredia entitled ""A dead city"" and published for the first time in 1893 in the famous collection ""The trophies"" masterpiece of the poet. To a bleak city. Cartagena of Indias 1532 - 1583 - 1697. ""Morne town once queen of the oceans! Today the shark pursues in peace the scombs and the wandering cloud only extends the shadows On your harbor where giant galleons rolled. Since Drake and the assault of the English miscreants Your cluttered walls crumble in black rubble And like a glorious necklace of dark pearls Pointis balls show the gaping holes. Between the burning sky and the sea At the sleepy sun of a monotonous noon You dream O Guerriere to the old Conquistadors; And in the annoyance of warm calm nights Rocking your faded glory O City you fall asleep Under the palm trees with the long trembling palms. unknown
