William Heard Kilpatrick 1871-1965 was an American pedagogue and a pupil a colleague and a successor of John Dewey. Kilpatrick was born in White Plains Georgia. He had an orthodox upbringing and was educated at Mercer University and Johns Hopkins University where he later became a mathematics teacher at High School and at Mercer University. He first met John Dewey in 1898 and again met him in 1907. Kilpatrick decided to make philosophy of education his specialty and occupied all courses by Dewey. From this developed a cooperation which persisted up to Dewey's death in 1952. Both men's ideas directly impacted the 1932 founding of Bennington College in Vermont: they were both on the original College Board of Trustees with Kilpatrick soon becoming President of the Board and two of the original 12 houses on campus are named after them. His first teaching job was at Blakely Institute a combined elementary and secondary public school in southwest Georgia required that he attended a July 1892 summer at Rock College Normal School Athens GA. There he learned of the educational theories of German educator Friedrich Froebel kindergarten founder and learning-through-play advocate. He again studied at Johns Hopkins University summer 1895 then taught seventh grade at and was principal of Anderson Elementary School Savannah GA 1896-97. He was at Mercer University 1897-1906 taught mathematics was vice-president 1900 and acting president 1904-06 but resigned when the trustees were concerned about his doubting the virgin birth. Kilpatrick spent the rest of his professional career and long life at TCCU. He received honorary LL.D. degrees from Mercer University 1926; Columbia University 1929; and Bennington College 1938 which he helped found in 1923 and where he was president of the board of trustees 1931-38; the honorary D.H.L. degree from the College of Jewish Studies 1952; and the Brandeis Award for humanitarian service 1953. After retiring from TCCU 1937 he was president of the New York Urban League 1941-51; chairman of American Youth for World Youth 1946-51; chairman of the Bureau of International Education 1940-51; and on the board of directors of the League for Industrial Democracy. Kilpatrick had several critics but many more admirers and followers. Both heralded and criticized as John Dewey's chief educational interpreter Kilpatrick was a leading advocate of progressive education. He died after a long illness at age 93 on February 13 1965. 1890. Fine. 1890 14.60 x 19.50 cm autre Collection composed of 24 wet-plate collodion photographs printed on albumen paper and hand-colored. The coloring of the photographs uses the traditional technique of distemper painting natural pigments mixed with glue applied with a brush. Photographers thus called upon painters rather than the watercolorists used for prints. Album formed of two wooden boards lacquered in red and bound Japanese-style in accordion format. Front cover lacquered with a scene depicting a man pulling a jinrikisha with a woman carrying a parasol. In the background Mount Fuji in silver color. Back cover with flowers. Edges gilt. Each fold-out recto and verso presents 12 photographs on the recto animated scenes views of landscapes and cities on the verso figures. This presentation is traditional for travel albums ""views and costume"" which the Japanese would later adopt. Each photograph: 9.5x13.7cm. The photographs are in very fine condition well preserved. Some pale spotting in the margins. The first board is slightly detached from the front lacquered cover. The ivory faces have attracted covetousness and have been removed leaving only bare wood where the faces once were. A small lack on the back cover. The views represent Yokohama and Nagasaki some are animated with figures others not showing temples the gate of the Shinto temple in Nagasaki streets a Japanese boat Mount Fuji a view of Lake Hakone and some contemporary views with modern buildings a street in Nagasaki the customs house in Yokohama which is a novelty in the Yokohama shashin of this late 19th century. The first collections showed with Beato only views of ancient Japan in black and white and both representation and demand evolved. These Japanese views are very close in their staging and framing to the art of printmaking. One finds there the Japanese taste already illustrated by prints for famous sites. Furthermore one sees practically no more men in photographs of this period because the photographs are meant to represent contemporary Japan and men are now dressed in Western style there are no more samurai. This is why women are represented in more than 70 percent of photographs from this period. In this regard it is always Geisha who are used for photos. All studios thus had contracts with Geisha houses whom they had pose for all scenes: musicians etc. One thus sees a blind woman playing the Shiansen as was practiced in Japan and the blind woman is here played by a Geisha. Other photographs show women practicing Ikebana Japanese floral art the tea ceremony painting on silk the game of Onigokko blind man's bluff. Kusakabe Kimbei one of the most important photographers of this period more commonly called by his first name Kimbei due to the difficulty experienced by foreigners in pronouncing his name was first known as Beato's colorist before opening his own studio in Yokohama in 1881. When opening his studio he bought Beato's and Stillfried's plates the first European photographers to establish themselves in Japan. Tamamura Kasaburo first established himself in Tokyo then in 1883 in Yokohama. It is not known how the two artists came to collaborate or how their photographs came to be mixed in several collections. It should be noted however that any attribution to a photographer is difficult due to the very history of photography in Japan because all the European studios and the first Japanese studios were bought by Japanese and the plates continued to be exploited under the name of the new photographer. However this album is comparable by its subjects and its binding to already known examples by the same photographers; see at C. Baxley album 111111. Few albums and photographs bear a signature or studio mark. For example we know that Beato left professional photography in 1872 Baron von Stillfried definitively left Japan in 1881. Martin Luther King Autograph Letter Signed.
Boston 1951. Typescript autograph letter signed by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. requesting housing upon his acceptance to Boston University Graduate School. The letter dated June 15th 1951 and addressed to Dean Charles W. Alter Boston University Graduate School reads "Dear Dean Alter I have been accepted in Boston University Graduate School as a regular student and a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of Systematic Theology. I am now interested in finding living accommodations on the campus or at least very near by. A single room would be preferable. If such is possible I would appreciate having it reserved. I am also interested in applying for a graduate Fellowship. Please send me the necessary information at this point along with an application blank. Thanks in advance for your cooperation I am Sincerely yours Martin L. King Jr." King later recalled his experience with housing bias in 1951 Boston in an interview with the Boston Globe in 1965 "I remember very well trying to find a place to live. I went into place after place where there were signs that rooms were for rent. They were for rent until they found out I was a Negro and suddenly they had just been rented." Double matted and framed with a photograph of a young King. The entire piece measures 14 inches by 21.75 inches. This letter offers an extraordinary glimpse into the education of the great African-American Civil Rights leader exemplifying his own experiences with the systemic racism in 1950s American society. Martin Luther King Jr. first received recognition for his outstanding skills as a public speaker as a student at Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta Georgia. He received early acceptance into the Liberal Arts program at the historically black Morehouse College at the age of 15 also in Atlanta and at age 18 decided to enter the ministry. After graduating from Morehouse in 1948 with a B.A. in Sociology King enrolled in Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester Pennsylvania where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Divinity in 1951. That same year he applied to Graduate School at Boston University where in June of 1955 he received his Ph.D. in Systematic Theology with a dissertation titled A Comparison of the Conceptions of God in the Thinking of Paul Tillich and Henry Nelson Wieman. While pursuing doctoral studies King worked as an assistant minister at Boston's historic Twelfth Baptist Church with Reverend William Hunter Hester a friend of King's father who became an important influence on King's later work. unknown books

Printed inside the cover is a AAA letter testifying that a stock King Model E 8-cylinder 7-passenger touring car ran day and night without motor stop for 14 days on the Sheepshead Bay Speedway and Long Island Motor Parkway. The point was to show that the King "could be run continuously for a greater mileage that the average motorist puts behind him in two years without a single replacement except tires and with a minimum of owner's attention and labor expense." Photographs by Lazarnick show the "Long Island Highways" the King on the road being serviced with the engine running crowds at the start and finish lines &c.
