On the message side of a glossy 5¼" X 3¼" heavy stock photograph of Ludwig writing at a desk he boldly pencils: "Thanking for / kind wishes. / Ludwig / Lucerne / 3.3.40 / Greatings sic to your / splendid ." Address portion at right also in his hand to Arnold F. Gates of Eleveland Ohio 1914-09 a future noted Lincoln scholar. Very good. Later this same year Ludwig emigrated to the United States. Surely Ludwig's biography of Lincoln was the occasion for this Lincoln scholar to write the great Lincoln biographer. unknown

It is illustrated with four wood-engraved vignettes borrowed from Decameron of Boccace Venice 1531 and ingeniously twisted to suit their context. This edition is the first text of the author and is unique in that it has not been corrected. The book will be translated in French only in 1792. Modern binding in full red morocco the spine in five compartments gilt date and title golden fillets surround the cover the endpaper and pastedown of vellum. Provenance: Library of Gianni de Marco with its book plate and itsseal. No copies in an American Library one in the British Library and some others in European Libraries. No copy has been sold in the past 20 years. Ode to the harvest in which Luigi Tansillo 1510-1568 poet and soldier of the Renaissance recounts the carnival-like celebration of the country side of Nola Campanie. During this celebration inspired by those of the antiquity the drunk peasants give all sorts of bawdy speeches about Neapolitan women with a licentiousness that was still tolerated without distinction of age or sex or social class. The allegory of Tansillo a truly priapic creation alarmed the modesty. The Inquisition placed the work on the index and the poet was forced to beg forgiveness from Pope Paul IV by composing the Lagrime de san Pietro: the supreme Pontiff accorded his mercy to the sinner and removed the ban on all his works except for this one. hardcover

Of note on p. 40 is a large vignette representing an abecedary in a circle whose center is a star. The leaf following the title is also an engraved plate it is the dedication to the king with his portrait in a medallion a succession of loops forming the figure and the decoration. We have been unable to determine if this first edition contained the author's portrait found in the 1770 editions which moreover possess notable differences from the first edition. Only one copy at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France from 1768 none in French catalogues. The British Library holds a copy of the 1766 edition 1770 and another of the 1768 edition. Contemporary full vellum binding limp. Smooth spine with handwritten title along spine faded and barely legible. Some stains on covers. A pale yellow dampstain on the title page having browned the leaf margins. The work is not only an exposition of the art of writing but also a linguistic and phonetic treatise on the Spanish language with provincial differences. Libros Antiguos Puvill. Octavo eight pages partially printed and accomplished in manuscript the collection includes: grant for land lot 156 in Muscogee County Georgia surveyed in 1826 and granted in 1832 to David Maw signed by Wilson Lumpkin at the bottom edge official wax seal attached by a pale red ribbon; grant for land lot 167 in Muscogee County Georgia surveyed in 1826 and granted in 1832 to James Bridges signed by Wilson Lumpkin at the bottom edge official wax seal attached by a pale red ribbon; grant for land lot 160 in Muscogee County Georgia surveyed in 1826 and granted in 1827 to Joseph Lockaler signed by Georgia Governor George M. Troup at the bottom edge tied with a pale red ribbon but missing the official wax seal; grant for land lot 166 in Muscogee County Georgia surveyed in 1826 and granted in 1830 to Widow Martha Sayer signed by Governor George Gilmer at the bottom edge official wax seal attached by a pale red ribbon. In very good condition with some toning a few closed tears. The pieces measure approximately 9.75 inches by 8 inches. The Muscogee or Creek people historically resided in what now comprises southern Tennessee much of Alabama western Georgia and parts of northern Florida. Most of the tribe were forcibly removed to Indian Territory now Oklahoma by the federal government in the 1830s during the Trail of Tears although a small group of the Muscogee Creek Confederacy remained in Alabama. During this period the state of Georgia began using land lotteries as a means of land redistribution where citizens could register for a chance to win lots of land that had been appropriated by the State of Georgia or the Federal government from the Muscogee and the Cherokee Nation. unknown

1855 - 1862 ORIGINAL SCRAPBOOK AND DIARY OF WORK PURCHASES FINANCE AND PERSONAL INTERESTS OF A SAGAMORE - PLYMOUTH MASSACHUSETTS FATHER AND SON
SAGAMORE PLYMOUTH MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA. Good. 1855. On offer is an interesting original pre Civil War and Civil War era manuscript diary journal and catchall scrapbook handwritten and compiled by we believe Luther Douglas b.1828 and then later his son Charles Everett Douglas b.1852 between 1855 and November 1862. Casual research finds Luther born in Plymouth and Charles in Sagamore Massachusetts. This is backed up with many entries suggesting easy visits and trips to Plymouth. The book is marked "Hired Mens Book" but that is crossed out and then is full of Douglas' writings and clippings save for a couple of pages used by a child Charles it appears. This unusual book has approximately 122 pages with entries a short scrap area: 10 pages have poetry cut from newspapers and/or magazines covering up the journal entries dated from January 1855 or so. This is followed by three pages of entries and then scraps on 19 Presidents not in chronological order are pasted down covering other entries. These were placed later as evidenced by the Abraham Lincoln clipping mentioning the President's martyrdom. The balance is a personal journal and diary centering around work related entries mostly for Sarah or Jacob Perry then Handel Tripp and many many more visits purchases trips and much more. There are a small number of ephemeral inserts one of particular genealogical interest as it is a slip of paper with the note: 'one man's family'. The book itself is a board covered book measuring approximately 6 1/4" x 7 3/4". A small book measuring 5 3/4 inches tall by almost 3 1/2 inches wide. Hardcover bound in original leather-covered wooden boards. The binding is quite worn and stained. Chipping at the spine ends. The leather is chipped and is darkened on the rear cover from having been damped and is peeling up where it is chipped revealing the wooden board beneath. The front pastedown is torn away revealing the front wooden board. Lacks the clasp. Several signatures a bit sprung. There is a chip at the fore edge of the title page affecting some of the lettering. The text is toned and stained. Bottom edge torn away from the bottom of the final leaf but there does not appear to be text missing. Worldcat also notes 252 pages. Printed in "Old German" type. The hardcover portfolio has a printed salmon-colored title label also the same label on the text booklet. The portfolio boards have a little light fading or discoloration but still very good. The hard spine of the portfolio has the title printed in salmon colored letters also very good. The text booklet is also very good with almost no wear just one tiny inscription to the front endpaper of the booklet. The loose plates are also very clean and fresh. Text by Joseph Lux in German. All plates are reproduced in black & white. Seven drawings of interiors reproduced in black & white in the text booklet. This is the 7th edition of this important collection of Empire and Biedermeier furniture and decorative arts assembled by Joseph Lux and with his introduction and notes. Red morocco shield on the back. The frontispiece an engraving of 'M. Burghers' depicts Alexandra she points at Troy in fire in the background. Burghers was one of the leading engravers of England during that period. The book has 2 titles the first one is in Greek and is adorned with an big engraving of the Sheldonian Theatre also made by Burghers. The second title is in Latin and has a woodcut printer's mark which shows the wellknown coat of arms of the University of Oxford Condition: Vellum soiled. Boards somewhat outstanding Note: Lycophron 3rd cent. BC was called to Alexandria by King Ptolemaeus Philadelphos. There he wrote his Alexandra or Cassandra ca. 1474 iambic trimeters in which Kassandra =Alexandra tells about the fall of Troy and the fates of the Greek and Trojan Heroes. Dibdin calls this edition 'beautiful' and the 'editio optima'. He cites Harwood who declares this work to be 'an everlasting monument of the learning of the illustrious editor'. The illustrious editor was the learned cleric John Potter 1674-1747 who later in life in 1737 was appointed bishop of Canterbury. Young Potter corrected in this edition the commentaries of Tzetzes using 3 new manuscripts; he added indices and annotations of himself. At the age of 14 Potter was sent to Oxford University College. There he distinguished himself by his knowledge of Greek. Still a young man in 1697 he produced his first edition of Lycophron. In 1698 Potter published his greatest success the 'Archaeologia Graeca' which long remained a standard book for Greek students in Britain. In 1715 Potter produced his splendid edition of Clemens Alexandrinus. Chalmers' Biography 25231 The first 146 p. of this 1702 edition contain the Greek text with iuxtaposed the Latin prose translation of the Dutch classical scholar Willlem Canter 1545-1572 dating from 1566. The scholia are printed on the lower half of the page together with the 'variantes lectiones' and the 'emendationes'. After the Greek text follows the metrical iambico carmine translation into smooth Latin made by J.J. Scaliger 1540-1609 which was published toghether with Canter's translation in 1566 in Basel. The second half of the book contains the notes annotationes of Canter and a specimen of Canter's versatility in Greek and Latin verse the 'Epitome Cassandrae graeco-Latina versibus Anacreontiis conscripta'. Added is also the commentary of the Dutch classical scholar Johannes Meursius 1579-1639 published in 1597 & 1599. At the end we find the commentary of John Potter himself Provenance: Small bookplate of the Swiss politician Karl Zeerleder 1780-1851 on the front pastedown. Small blind stamped owner's mark of Mark Pattison 1813-1884 in the right margin of the title. Pattison was like Potter a tutor at Lincoln College. In 1861 Pattison was elected rector. Engraved armorial bookplate on the front pastedown. Frontispiece of Cassandra as a prophetes engraved by Aloysius Agricola with at the foot the text of Aeneis 2 vss. 246/74. Engraving of the 'Gemma Maffei' by G. Petrini on the title at the foot another Cassandra quote from the second book of the Aeneis vss. 403/4. 1 engraved plate showing two Cassandra gemmae by Dom Campiglia & Vin. Francescini Condition: A fine copy. A touch of rubbing to the joints; 1 small scratch on the 3rd compartment. Some surface wear to the upper corner of the lower board. The binder has bound by mistake the 'commentarius' of 210 pages before the Greek text Note: Leopoldo Sebastiani Italian classical scholar priest and missionary. His exact dates are sofar unknown. At the end of the 18th century he was still a young man for in the 'Bibliothecae Josephi Garampii cardinalis catalogus' Rome 1796 p. 40 he is called 'Juvenis in recondita Graecorum eruditione valde versatus'. In this catalogue a future edition of the scholia to Homer of Eustathius is announced a project that was apparantly aborted. The young man then turned to the Greek poet Lycophron 3rd. century A.D. for an edition of his Cassandra also known as Alexandra. The poem of 1500 iambic trimeters tells the profecies of the Trojan princes Kassandra the fall of Troy and the fate of the Greek heroes. At the end are the profecies of the future supremacy of Rome. Sebastiani's edition is an ambitious one. After an introduction we find the Greek text with a facing translation into Latin made by the Dutch classicist Canter Basel 1566. Below the translation comes a Latin paraphrasis produced by Sebastiani. Added are the 'variantes lectiones' the extensive scholia and the emendations to the Scholia. At the end a 'Selecta discrepantium lectionum silva'. The byzantine scholars Isaac and Johannes Tzetzes who were brothers lived in the 12th century Three indices disclose this commentary. The contemporary reviewer of the GGA Göttingische Gelehrte Anzeigen calls the translation of the commentarius 'unendlich besser' than the translation of Basel 1558. GGA praises Sebastiani's search for manuscripts of the Cassandra the oldest of which dates from the 9th or 10th century and which was once the property of Fulvius Ursinus. GGA: 'Alle Codices habe er mit der grössten Genauigkeit vergliche; das grösste Verdienst eignet er sich um die Scholien zu worin er an 2000 Fehler verbessert habe'. . The German reviewer is impressed because Sebastiani produced this edition in the turmoil of an adventurous life as a missionary and a diplomat. He records 2 long travels to the Orient up to Ispahan in Persia. Back in Constantinople Sebastiani was an honoured guest of Lord Elgin because he had saved two Englishman. From another source we learn that the English held Sebastiani in high esteem 'for the losses he sustained and misfortunes he suffered in consequence of important services which he gratuitously rendered to the British government while resident in Persia as president of the missionaries sent by the Church of Rome'. The reviewer of GGA rebukes the Latin of Sebastiani he calls it 'oft sehr Orientalisch'. Göttingische gelehrte Anzeigen Göttingen 1804 p. 340/4. A later French reviewer exclaimed: 'Mais quel latin!' Sebastiani is probably best known for his excellent translation of the New Testament published in London in 1817. Th.H. Horne places this translation alongside those of the giants Erasmus and Beza 'those of Erasmus Beza and Sebastiani are particularly worth of notice'. Sebastiani is also known for his 'Storia dell'Indostan' a history of India published in 1820. He also translated parts of the Bible into Persian Provenance: bookplate with the coat of arms of 'Joseph Neeld' with a banner reading: 'Nomen extendere factis'. Neeld 1789-1856 was a wealthy English philanthropist who had a good library and art collection. He was in 1830 Member of Parliament for Gatton a rotten borough with six houses and one elector but sending 2 members which was abolished by the Reform Act of 1832.
