‎France: Éditions d'Art Albert Skira 1994 Peut-on écrire l'histoire de l'illustration Au-delà des énumérations et des anthologies bibliophiliques cet ouvrage cherche à comprendre comment à chaque époque s'est fondé le rapport du texte à l'image. Ce n'est pas le caprice des créateurs qui tantôt assemble tantôt exclut tantôt confond écriture et figure sur une même page. L'emploi d'un type de signe est déjà en lui-même riche de signification. Il répond chaque fois à un enjeu différent abondamment alimenté par le discours des philosophes des pédagogues et des théologiens. C'est ce jeu complexe d'interaction entre la lettre et le dessin qui doit être historiquement situé et chacune de ses multiples variantes expliquée en fonction des savoirs et des pouvoirs qui les ont soutenus et en ont tiré profit. Il s'agit donc plutôt que d'une histoire d'une typologie de l'illustration analysant les complicités et les concurrences du texte et de l'image aussi bien dans la confusion du pictogramme que dans la séparation radicale de l'art classique dans les équivoques de la calligraphie que dans les «correspondances» romantiques. Cette analyse nécessite d'envisager l'illustration sous toutes ses formes du signe primaire : marque trace insigne aux recherches sophistiquées des hyper-graphistes ou de la poésie visuelle. Elle doit aussi prendre en compte l'ensemble de la production illustrée : non seulement le « beau livre» d'artiste mais aussi l'image scientifique et technique l'imagerie «quotidienne» des manuels scolaires et des calendriers la bande dessinée les livres pour enfants le reportage des magazines etc. On apprendra ainsi que dans toute illustration le texte et l'image ne sont pas d'innocents partenaires mais deux forces qui dans le champ de ce qu'on pourrait appeler « l'idéologie des signes se disputent sans cesse le même territoire. ‎New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers 1851. First edition first issue binding of Melville’s masterpiece. Octavo original red variant cloth BAL’s A grain covers stamped in blind with Harper’s circular device at the center of the front panel within a heavy blind ruled frame plain orange endpapers. Issued in a single volume in black green blue red purple slate or brown cloth gilt. The first state of the binding has a circular device at center of covers that is absent from the second state binding. Much has been made of whether the earliest copies bound should have orange-coated end papers but in fact there is no priority between copies with orange dark orange maroon veined in gold or marbled end papers. Of uncertain status are three copies that have been seen with plain white end papers and a copy seen with yellow-coated end papers. Copies in bindings with beaded rope-like designs or Grolier-esque strapwork borders are very likely copies that survived Harper's terrible fire of December 10 1853 which destroyed 287 copies 212 were still unbound in sheets. The first printing by Harper's in 1851 numbered 2915 copies approximately 300 copies were destroyed in a warehouse fire in 1853 and as late as 1854 copies of the first edition were still available from the publisher. A second printing of 250 copies was issued in 1855 and in 1863 the third printing of 253 copies was issued. In very good condition rebacked. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell box. Rare and desirable in the rare variant publisher's red cloth. Initially panned by critics and readers when published in 1851 "in the 20th century Moby Dick would be rediscovered and acknowledged as possibly the greatest of all American novels" Chronology of American Literature. Arguably the greatest single work in American literature Moby-Dick was initially “a complete practical failure misunderstood by the critics and ignored by the public. Nevertheless Melville’s permanent fame must always rest on the great prose epic of Moby-Dick a book that has no equal in American literature for variety and splendor of style and for depth of feeling†DAB. On offer is a neat piece of New Hampshire history being the first minute book of Bartlett New Hampshire’s newly formed Order of the King’s Daughters and Sons Chapter. The book opens to handwritten details of what appear to be four affiliated chapters of the Order but the remainder of the minute book makes it clear that only Chapter No. 1 became operational. The date of organization for Chapter No. 1 whose circle name is the “Union Helpers” is Dec 10 1894. The Union Helpers inaugural leader is A. L. Russell Vice leaders is Mrs. Frank Burbank Jane A. Burbank b. 1857 Secretary is Mrs. Lydia Freeman Treasurer is Reverend A. M. Freeman and their line of work is set to be “furnishing the church”. Following the information on the chapters begins the Secretary’s report of the first Union Helpers meeting written by Lydia Freeman who was elected at the meeting. This entry is undated but it was likely Dec 10 1894. Following that are minutes of the Union Helpers meetings which begin in January of 1895 and continue intermittently through 1900. While the chapter meets almost weekly with the exception of summer in 1895 the meetings taper off significantly in 1896 and beyond. It is clear by the 1900 minutes that the group is having a difficult time keeping up interest and membership. In total there are 33 numbered pages of minutes ending with the final recorded meeting on March 15 1900 signed by the treasurer at the time Rebecca Allan. Beginning on page 44 of the book is the Treasurer’s Report which is a ledger of money spent and received and provides even more insight into the activities of the King’s Daughters and the people involved. Again this ledger was kept consistently in the first year and then intermittently. One entry from the minute book is transcribed here: “Circle met with Mrs. Allen. Leader being present read a Chapter from the Bible and Prayer was offered by Mr. Allen. Members present were Mrs. Russell Mrs. Adelaide Mead Mrs. Merry Mrs. Allen Mrs Burbank and one associate member Mrs. Martha Mead. Three new members were accepted and given the obligation by the Leader. They were Mr. Archibald Allen Mrs. Abbie Hall Mrs. Sarah Mead. Work was worsted and print patchwork and fancy work. Circle was invited to meet on the following Thursday with Mrs. John Eastman - Mrs. F. E. Burbank Secretary” April 11 1895. This minute book is a treasure trove of genealogical information for the Bartlett New Hampshire region as well as an intimate look into the charitable work women took on in the 19th century. The organization is technically called the Order of the King’s Daughters and Sons and therefore the men are often named and involved as they attend meetings and contribute funds. This helps draw conclusions about relationships within Bartlett at the time. Note: There are dozens of Bartlett names contained within the minute book. Some of these include Frank E Burbank b. BIO NOTES: Established in 1886 as a Protestant non-denominational group consisting primarily of women the Order of the King's Daughters and Sons distributed aid to the poor while raising awareness of their plight. The group experienced tremendous growth through the early part of the 20th Century inspiring the formation of numerous other women's charity groups. Not the first leather-bound copy we've encountered so we suspect that this copy is not rebound but rather one of a limited number of specially-bound copies original to issue also issued in cloth and most commonly gray wraps lettered in burgundy and black. The address was put together by a committee chaired by William M. Meredith. The address is followed by a statement by Daniel L. Miller Jr. president of the Sunbury and Erie Railroad Company about the railroad proposed to connect Sunbury to Erie. The Sunbury and Erie Railroad Company had been chartered in 1837 but did not begin construction until 1852 when the state passed enabling legislation. No date of publication; based on information in the address 1851 is the most likely date. William Morris Meredith 1799-1873 was a lawyer in Philadelphia; he served as Secretary of the Treasury under President Zachary Taylor in 1849 and 1850. Very scarce. This finely hand colored emblemata engraving was published 1719 in Bernhard Valentini’s herbalDes vollständigen und Reformirten Kräuter=Buchs’ at Anton Heinscheidt in Frankfurt am Main. It depicts a combination of a plant with a typical German landscape between 1650 to 1719. These allegorical emblemata engravings were composed and engraved in a very similar style as the famous allegorical illustrations which were published by Matthaeus Merian for Ludwig Prince of Anhalt’s Der Fruchtbringende Gesellschafft’ Nahmen Vorhaben Gemälde und Wörter’ in 1646. In this series for every of the 400 members of theFruchtbringende Gesellschaft’ a unique allegoric engraving was created. It seems that Bernhard Valentini either aquired from the Merian heirs inventory or from an unknown source copper plates with these allegories and used those then in his own herbal or he arranged on his own them to be created. He did this already prior with the copper plates of the flower book by de Bry which he used in his flowerbook and which he extended then in the same style. All of these allegories are showing a combination of baroque garden scenes landscapes city views or castles. Each of these decorative allegories is depicting a plant specimen in front of a topographical background. This engraving is printed into a page with descriptive German text for this plant specimen.
