This is the copy belonging to Judson Boyce Allen 1932-1985 the author of several works on medieval literature including "Distinction of Stories: The Medieval Unity of Chaucer's Fair Chain of Narratives for Canterbury;" and "The Friar as Critic: Literary Attitudes in the Later Middle Ages." This book provides for the first time in over seventy-five years a single comprehensive up-to-date account of the fortunes of the Arthurian story in England from the time of Malory to the beginning of the Victorian period. After a brief survey of the earliest forms of the legend the author examines the slow decline of the myth in the English Renaissance until its near extinction by the middle of the eighteenth century despite the attraction which it held for Spenser Drayton Jonson and Dryden. Succeeding chapters show that even through the legend's vitality was reduced by both Dryden and Fielding the Romantic movement brought Arthur back to life Minor figures such as William Hilton and Richard Hole together with Scott and Wodsworth though they did not produce great poems on the subject are shown nevertheless to have responded seriously to the legend. The book concludes with an England ready in its interests and sympathies for the great flowering of the Arthurian story among the Victorians. Throughout this survey which covers both the major figures and a number of hitherto unexamined minor authors James D. Merriman is concerned with several questions of considerable interest both scholarly and critical. . FRENCH CREEK N.Y. Very Good. 1877. On offer is a super original diary handwritten by a young farmer from French Creek a small town in the state of New York on the border with Pennsylvania. Based on the information found in the diary and in "The Historical Journal of More Family" it is most probable that the diary was written by Lucius Carleton Merry 1846 -1909 who arrived in French Creek in 1850s when his father purchased a large dairy farm there. The diary covers the full year of 1877 an entry made for each day. As most farmers' diaries it contains weather records and lists farming operations including plowing wood cutting sugar tapping apple picking etc. Cheese making was a seasonal activity on May 2nd he wrote: "Make the first cheese today" They were selling cheese and butter in Corry New York or North East not always successfully. At the start of the year Merry wrote down account balance for 1876: "Have been to Corry today settled up the balance of the cheese account and sent 60$ to Jamestown making 542$ in all this year". In addition to regular farm operations county residents were required to do road work each year: "Work on the road have 181/2 days to work this year. One of the often operations in winter was wood cutting and drawing which was not always safe. Merry reports three accidents during the year when people were killed: "Hut Richardson was hurt today so that he died. He was drawing logs and was hit on the head by the binder. Charley Kennedy and I sat up with the corpse." In spite of hard labour and financial problems - several entries are about his father looking for money to buy cows - his diary makes an impression of a very positive sociable person and conveys strong sense of community. He mentions a lot of people neighbours and relatives attending church meetings parties. On April 18th a rare occasion when they had no visitors and did not go out he writes: "Have been at home all day it has been the most lonesome day that I have had in a long time". Church is an important part of his life that he often mentions in the diary: "Go to church and Sunday school have a sermon for the benefit of Freedmen. I think it was the blackest that I ever heard" probably meaning a sermon written by Alexander G. Cummins in 1865. At the end of the diary there is a ledger detailing monthly expenses and income. The diary contains many names of French Creek residents and of residents of nearby towns and mentions many local events including elections: "This afternoon have been to caucus had lots of fun. Pa goes to Corry tonight to get one set of tickets printed.The Republican ticket was all elected". The book has a brown leather cover with flap closure. Name and location written with a pencil on the endpaper. The book is titled "Exelsior Diary 1877". Condition: Very good. Pencil is slightly faded at some places but the text is clear. Born in 1852 in Kalucz, a town on the eastern border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Max Fruchtermann came to Istanbul in 1867 and two years later opened a picture framing shop in the city. Having decided to have the first Ottoman Postcard Series printed at Breslau in 1895, he ensured through his cards, which number in the millions, that the name "Turkey and the multifarious images associated with it" spread throughout the entire world from Canada to New Zeland. In 1966 when Fruchtermann's daughter-in-law Anna, before closing down the establishment, sold her remaining stock (subsequently realized to number around 600,000) to a secondhand dealer for 2500 liras, she probably never imagined the importance of her father-in-law's postcards. They are not simply photographs of landscape panoramas monumental buildings and people of the time. They are individual documents that reflect in their human types and cross-sections of everyday life the noteworthy political incidents of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the ethnic and cultural diversity embodied in the Ottoman identity. As such they have acquired significance far in excess of original expectations. It always comes as a pleasant surprise to collectors to see that ordinary objects left to us from the past, and usually assumed to be of mere functional value, in time acquire special significance. For us, however, far more than a pleasant surprise these postcards are a door opening up on our recent history. The places, incidents and types that Fruchtermann saw and appraised with his own eyes have been given new life and brought together as a whole thanks to this study and up-to-date treatment by Mert Sandalci.

Egerton Anthony Brydges Seems To Have Stopped Editing The Magazine Near The Start Of Volume Two With No Evidence Of Any Contributions From Him After The Second Issue And His Father's Contributions Seem Only To Have Continued Until The Eighth Issue. An Unknown Editor Using The Initials "J. H. H." Effectively Took Over From Issue Nine. Towards The End Of The Second Series After The Fiftieth Sixteen-Page Weekly Issue Of The Magazine It Was Turned Into A Monthly Magazine. The Third Volume Published 1825 Changed Publishers To George Wightman And Started To Include Colour Plates. Part Way Through This Volume The Magazine Was Divided Into Two Parts: "The Literary Magnet" And "The Monthly Journal". A Fourth Volume Dated 1825 Completed The Magazine's First Series. The Editorship Changed At Least Once More To Another Unknown Figure Before The End Of The First Series Though The Pen-Name Tobias Merton Was Kept Throughout This Series As The Nominal Editor And As A Character In Its "Round Table" Columns. Alaric Alexander Watts Bought The Literary Magnet By December 1825 And Made An Unnamed "Very Clever Young Literary Friend" The Editor Of The First Volume Of Its Second Series Which Ran From January To June 1826. This Was Published By Charles Knight With The Full Title Changed To The Literary Magnet Or Monthly Journal Of The Belles Lettres. Watts Became The Anonymous Editor For Volumes Two July To December 1826 Three January To June 1827 And Four July To December 1827. A Final Fifth Volume Was Published And Edited By The Original Publisher William Charlton Wright Under The Title Wright's Literary Magnet. Frontispiece by A. de Blois it depicts an allegorical scene: in the centre a monument for Paullus Merula featuring a small bust of him surrounded by a laurel border; a winged Fama hovers on top blowing her trumpet; left of the monument probably Rome a woman in royal robe crown on her head & scepter in her right hand; at the left a priestress a full moon on her breast behind her an elephant; in the background several scenes and statues. § Engraved printer's device of Du Vivié on the title-page showing a radiant sun above a Dutch landscape motto: 'Ab Uno vita'. There are also copies that have a printer's mark with the motto 'Laurea Vincenti'. § A fresh and beautiful folding portrait of 44 year old Merula by the Dutch engraver Jacob Maetham 1571-1631; he is also known as Jacob Matham; the portait shows Merula three quarters within an oval frame; at the bottom of the frame the date of the engraving: `1602 mens. octobr.'; above his head the adagium: 'Vincenti Laurus' 'the wreath of laurels for the winner'; this was according to Johannes Meursius in his famous 'Athenae Batavae' the motto of Merula. In 1593 he was appointed professor of History at the university of Leiden. His colleague there was the famous scholar Joseph Justus Scaliger 1540-1609. His opinion of Merula: Cest un pauvre esprit et jugement comme tous ces Hollandais au reste bon homme. Several of Merula's works were published after his death. This edition of 1684 contains Merula's treatises: 'De sacrificiis Romanorum De sacerdotibus Romanorum De legibus Romanorum De comitiis Romanorum' and 'De praemiis'. They were collected and edited by C.A. Maersche J.C. This is probably the jurist Cornelis van der Maerschen ca. 1652-1721. Sandys 'A history of classical scholarship' 1964 p. 311 § The tradition of studying the 'Athenian Festivals' goes back to antiquity was kept alive during the Renaissance and is still flourishing today. The real mark of a festival is the breadth of participation i.e. whether large groups of the population participate in the celebration. The Panathenaea or Panathenaic Games were held every four years in ancient Athens and are doubtless the best known of all Greek festivals with the exeption of Eleusis. It was held in honour of Athena in the form of Athena Polias the protectress of the city. There were two kinds of Panathenaea the lesser one often called Panathenaea without any epithet and greater Panathenaea which had the adjective µea. The difference between the two festivals was that the greater one was more solemn and luxurious and that the peplus of Athena was brought to the Parthenon on the Akropolis in a magnificent procession. The great Panathenaea were held every fourth year in the third year of every Olympiad and lasted a number of days. There were solemn and very munificent offerings and rituals a torch-race or lampadephoria/lampadarium was held between the Athenian phylai athletic competitions chariot races musical dance and reciting contests were organized and there was an abundance of food and entertainment. The chief solemnity was the procession to the temple of Athena Polias where a vestment the peplos was consecrated and offered to the goddess. Meursius treats all these aspects constantly referring to ancient sources. It is highly characteristic referring as it does to the design shortcomings of a published document -'the matter of the Report is full of interest - but its presentation - ugh! What conceivable justification is there for the vast head-of-page margins and diminutive tail-margins on type pages - made all the sillier by the full page arrangements of illustrated pages.' A copy of a newspaper obituary of the author is also included.
