New York: American Book Company 1936. Two volume set in a marbled paper slipcase. Brown leather embossed spine with black and white illustration on cover. Old Favorites from the McGuffey Readers has a sunned spine with wear to head and heel cracks and large chips. Gilt titles on spine are bright. 482 creamy pages red borders and titles and black and white illustrations. Tucked into book is a newspaper article circa 1936 "M'Guffey of the Readers." The newspaper article has left a lightly tanned stain on inside cover and fep. William Holmes McGuffey and His Readers is 203 pages. Tucked into back is a newspaper article circa 1936 probably from the New York Times "The Frist Reader" by Harry Hansen and is the review of this very set. The newspaper article has also left a lightly tanned area on the inside back cover and fep. Some rubbing to spine and a tear across spine. This is a lovely set the newspaper articles add charm it's a shame the spines haven't worn well. Slipcase has a crack across the bottom which is almost camoflaged in the print. 1882 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A STUDENT/TEACHER IN WESTERN NEW YORK STATE UNDER THE THUMB OF A MEAN PRINCIPAL
Red Creek Clyde New York. Good. 1882. On offer is an 1882 handwritten manuscript diary once belonging to Minnie L. Caywood of Red Creek in Western New York State. On the face of it Minnie's life seems busy but simple and is detailed as such. Basic notations such as getting vaccinated; Minnie's great joy from receiving a valentine's card; her responsibilities as a student and job as a teacher; her part in the Literary Society; death of old schoolmate Clara Meade village of Clyde to name just a few. But then something terrible happens at the school. It is all the more uncomfortable as she boards and teaches. She is forgiven but others are not and the tension and stress creates a situation where the boys and girls are made to turn their backs if they meet in the halls or on the campus. For the most part we understand Professor Baker the principal is terribly mean and is the main conductor directing the investigation and punishment. He is also such a looming presence that there is almost a daily note until the summer regarding his distemper. "Prof. is mean today as usual.There is Prof. walking along the fence. O how I wish I had a stone.In the evening we all went to a concert
Prof. watched us quite carefully.Prof. gave the boys a fearful lecture for cutting the bell cord." A closer reading may very well reveal answers or even more mystery. Many names and details of travels in the area for supplies are recorded. Appelmans depicting 3 men Octavius Minucius and Octavius Januarius discussing in the shadow of a tree which grows on the border of a river behind them a statue of a naked male figure a statue of Serapis in the distance the city. This is an illustration of the crucial scene as told by Minucius at the end of the second chapter where Minucius tells how his friend Caecilius as heathens used to do threw a kiss to the statue. Octavius then criticizes Minucius for letting his friend walk 'in hac inperitiae vulgaris caecitate' the blindness of vulgar heathen ignorance and to let him greet anointed stones lapides which are adorned with a laurel wreath unctos et coronatos Condition: Binding scuffed. Upper board detached. Rear joint cracking but still firm. Flyleaves gone. Blank upper margin of the frontispiece chipping and soiled. Some small inkstains. Bookplate on the front pastedown. Small name on the title Note: The Octavius is a dialogue in defence of the christian religion and perhaps the oldest literary work of christian Latin. It was written by Minucius Felix who lived in the second or third cent. A.D. In it he tries to prove that christian principles were not contrary to pagan culture and that the Greek and Roman philosophers paved the path for christianity. The inspiration seems to come from Cicero's dialogue 'De Oratore'. The dialogue starts with Minucius recollections of the friendship he had with the recently deceased christian advocate Octavius. The setting is Ostia2. Minucius Octavius Januarius and the heathen Caecilius have come there to enjoy their holiday free from 'iudicariam curam'. Caecilius then launches a vehement attack upon the christians and their doctrines. It is the opinion of Octavius that no honorable Roman should leave a friend in the darkness of ignorance. He ridicules the folly of heathen fables and proves the existence of providence and of God. Octavius warmly praises the purity courage and other virtues of the christians. At the end Caecilius acknowleges himself vanquished and converted. § Jacobus Ouzelius Oiselius 1631-1686 born as Jacques Oisel Oesel in Dantzig was only 21 when he edited this book. Although destined for a commercial career he chose to study classical literature in Leyden. Later he switched to law and became professor of law in Groningen. He also edited Gaius and Gellius. Van der Aa vol. 14 p. 59 Ouzelius says in the 'praefatio' that he hopes that the reader will forgive him any mistakes without 'livor' and 'maledicentia'. He dedicates the book to Queen Christina of Sweden. Well if we may believe Schoenemann Christina had reason for complaint. Schoenemann is very critical about Ouzelius. He calls him a 'futilissimus commentator'. 'Omnia apta inepta incredibile stupore et imprudentia corrosa sunt'. The value of this edition lies Schoenemann insists in the printed commentaries of previous commentators. The reader should skip the notes of Ouzelius and consult the presented notes of greater scholars as Nicolaas Rigaltius or Desiderius Heraldus or Elmenhorst or Wouwer.§ At the end has been added 'De errore profanarum religionum' by Julius Firmicus Maternus edited by Wowerius with his commentary. § Firmicus lived in the 4th century A.D. In it Firmicus urges the emperors Constans and Constantius both sons of Constantine the Great the man who in 313 A.D. had declared christianity to be the state religion to take the next step and abolish paganism. § This edition of 1672 is a reissue of the edition Leiden 1652. Schoenemann tells that the publisher increased the usefulness of the book by printing the notes of the commentators below the text. In the edition of 1652 all the notes of those scholars were printed separately at the end of the dialogue Provenance: name of one 'John Bayly' on the title. The owner of this apologetic dialogue might well be the Irish clergyman John Bayly who was Dean of Lismore from 1828 until 1831. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin. He was Chaplain to Henry Paget 1st Marquess of Anglesey. He served as Dean of Killaloe from 1808 to 1828 when he was appointed Dean of Lismore. He died on 24 June 1831. M.' on it of Eugen Freiherr von Maucler 1783-1859. The name of Paul Friedrich Theodor Eugen Maucler is connected with the legislation of the kingdom of Württemberg under 'König Wilhelm'. In 1818 he became minster of justice. His legislative work gave him great influence. He was hated by the liberals and resigned in 1848. On offer are three handwritten manuscript diaries written by Miriam Hammond a young woman we estimate 16 or 17 she graduates Normal B School in 1923 who lived in Holly New York. Miriam is attending school in Syracuse. These diaries detail the years 1921 1923 and 1924. The 1921 diary is written in a 1916 diary. Miriam is a gal with a lot of personality and she is a fine representative of the 'Flapper' era Miriam seems to focus a great deal on men and dating. In fact it takes Miriam only 3 entries in the first book for her to meet a new fellow admit she likes him and then breaks curfew to keep the date going. She notes giving a ring back to a particular fellow and the many many brothers of her many many girlfriends are all potential dates. These diaries are a whirlwind of activity. Sent a card to Stan. Went to school. Went to Legion dance at night with Gilbert Deloris and Floyd. Taylor's orchestra. Wonderful time. To bed at 5:00 a.m." "Expected Gilbert Jessie and Doe up in p.m. Came about 6:00. Went to Bergen. LeRoy and Avon to the White Horse Tavern. Had clams clam bouillon lobsters baked chicken and grapefruit. Wonderful time. Back to city and home on last car." "Got up at 7:00. Ready to go to N. Rose. Started at 8:45 arrived there at 12:20. Cleveland OHIO OH. Good. 1940. On offer is an original 1940 manuscript diary handwritten by Anne Segan of Cleveland Ohio. The writer offers readers an intimate look into the life and times of an American 'girl-next-door' at the very crossroads of history. Anna raises the level of this diary from a simple retelling of the mundane details of doings in one's life but she also writes about her feelings and experiences creating a mural of what life was like for a young woman at the beginning of the Second World War period. At the beginning of the year she took her bookkeeping test which she passed and the next day she got her first job at Western Auto on Davenport Avenue earning $20 a month. She records the things that she does each day including going to parties going to movies with friends and going on dates. Her father drives her into town each day and deposits her checks at the bank for her. Here are some snippets: "Went to town with Mammie. Met Johnny Holley in town. Went up to Cleve. Voc. Bureau and took Bkkg. test. Made it in 9 mins very good. Call from there to go to work tomorrow. Well here I am at Western Auto on Davenport Ave. Making $20 a week. Only temporary. 1846 ORIGINAL CHARMING 3 PAGE TRAVEL 'JOURNAL' DETAILING A FAMILY TRIP TO NAHANT MASSACHUSETTS BY A VERY YOUNG BRIGHT AND CREATIVE GIRL
NAHANT MASSACHUSETTS ESSEX COUNTY 1846. On offer is an original very charming three 3 page August 11th 1846 manuscript 'journal' of a vacation visit to Nahant Massachusetts including details of Spouting Horn and trip aboard the General Lincoln steamer handwritten by a young girl 'G. Searle' as noted in another hand on the back page. As to age we estimate she may be as young as 8 or as old as 10. At one point she and the members of her party get weighed and she is a mere 60 pounds. Miss Searle has a created an utterly charming account of the family's trip to Nahant in both the way she describes her time and the manner in which she produces her narrative on paper as she alternates in both style from cursive to block printing and using different styles and fonts too to make this one very lovely ephemeral relic of summer travel and family memories. Adding further breadth are a small number of naïve drawings. The 7¾ x 9¾ inch letter is overall G. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Manuscript. unknown

Nice hand writing but still playing with her dolls we estimate she is 9 or 10 years old. Research suggests that she is somewhere outside of Boston Massachusetts area. Our young diarist does a commendable job sharing her day to day life through mid-May she gets sick and sputters out entries that include details of going to school her teachers and siblings visits to church and grandparents games such as chess and backgammon sliding ice-skating and a long sickness in the Spring. She goes frequently to St. Paul's Mission fights with her sister tells of being given 'a lot of elegant frosted cake' on a visit 'went over to Grandma's and much candy' 'Lizzie and Gertie Mary and Momma all jumped on a rotten potato' 'our Jemiah climed a tree
.there she sat throwing corn at our old bobtail rooster' recipe for Indian Pudding are a few of the bits of her life she shares with her diary. ORRVILLE BAUGHMAN TOWNSHIP WAYNE COUNTY OHIO OH. Good. 1916. On offer is an original and unusual manuscript diary handwritten by Helen Schaffter who lived in Orrville Baughman Township Wayne County Ohio. In this charming book she kept memories of her school commencement notes her class colors class yell motto flowers song class officers school faculty amusements autographs sayings poems jokes stunts and frolics etc. She lists the commencement gifts that she received which include a ruby ring gold jewel case silk parasol silk boudoir cap ebony mirror and more. Helen does a great job over 79 pages in this 6" x 9 1/4" book naming her friends and detailing their travels and otherwise painting a picture of life just before America entered the First World War. Adding depth to the narrative Helen has littered the book with ephemera: mementos photos her calling card and a Valentine cupid cut-outs etc. There are a number of wonderful photographs of her too. Research suggests that Helen's parents were Paul A. Schaffter and Lucilla V. Schaffter and they were born in Switzerland. Her father was 51 years old and her mother was 49 years old when she was born! LA PRAIRIE BOWEN ILLINOIS. Good. 1919. On offer is an archive of nine 9 in total original manuscript diaries three 1912 1914 and 1915 handwritten by Miss J. Maie Garwood a 23 year old and six 1917 1918 1919 1924 1925 and 1927 diaries handwritten by T.J. Garwood an older woman b. Dec. 20 1950 perhaps Maie's mother. The family lived in or near Bowen and La Prairie Illinois with frequent mention of Hannibal Bentley Plymouth Quincy Augusta and Keokuk. Historians and collectors of the area will find entries about oil that was discovered in the area in 1914 and about the oil men coming around plus much more local history and genealogy. Both diarists do a super job keeping record of all the births deaths and marriages in the area. We read with some delight at Maie's entry on April 2nd 1914 where she talks about have a "carpet rag tacking" party and invites the whole neighborhood. She lists the names of everyone there. Here are some snippets: "February 6th Real nice day. We washed in the forenoon. In the afternoon Hazel and Jessie called and I cut out a dress for Jessie. John went to haul hogs for M. E. Randall then went to Dave Sapp's for sawdust. Bob Mchone and a Harris fellow called to invite us to a dance at Frank Plowman's tomorrow night. They wanted Len to play but he declined. Marion Boman and George Nunn pulled in about 7:30 tonight for supper preparatory to hulling clover tomorrow." "March 26th Nice day. Hank and I went to town in the forenoon. Found the roads worse than we expected to find them but we drove the ____ so reached home in safety. Mama did the housework and ironed. In the afternoon we commenced the quilting. Len and John worked in the timber. At night all the boys took their "horses" and dogs out for a hunt. The derby dog got hung in the fence and Len had to go over to him. He had to carry him on home." "May 21st A fine warm day. Windy again today. The boys worked at the other place. Papa and I went to town in the forenoon. Mama did the housework. We cleaned the pantry in the afternoon. Rev. Fully written Miss Brown is a superb diarist naming any and all she comes into contact - from school visits family events and social times. Save for one day when Josephine was very ill and only wrote a couple of lines each day is detailed. Deeply religious our author mentions sermons her devotion but at times her difficulties too. Local historians and genealogists will find this a treasure of local history and information. 1915 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF EARLY WORLD WAR I TORONTO
TORONTO ONTARIO ON CANADA. Very Good. 1915. On offer is a very interesting 1915 handwritten manuscript diary kept by a young lady living in early World War I Toronto Ontario. There are entries for every day from January 1st until August 1915 after which the entries are sporadic. She was a sales clerk at Eaton's Department Store. In March she suddenly became ill and was hospitalized. She was operated on the same day and remained in hospital recovering for about two weeks. She doesn't identify her illness. The entries take one back to a simpler Toronto as she notes her day to day life including day trips to Port Credit and the Toronto Islands skating parties at Varsity Stadium seeing soldiers at church work friends family etc. She also records the deaths of an aunt and uncle in Detroit in late 1914. The family name of the girl was McClelland. In august she appears to have begun seeing a young man named Harold Byers. Later we find he has joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force. This is a very charming glimpse into life in Toronto in 1915. ASEA ABOARD THE BRIGANTINE YANKEE 1956. On offer is a super original 1956 - 1958 archive of 60 mostly type written letters 200 pages in all with copious handwritten additions some manuscript letters all authored by a young 18 - 20 year old woman named P. P. Riley who often signs letters PPPPP or Peggy Pat to mom and dad Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Riley of Middlebury Connecticut. Zippy and Nosey siblings we surmise and several other family and friends are also addressed. Miss Riley is on the trip of a lifetime helping crew the storied Brigantine Yankee for famed sailors Irving Johnson and his wife Electa who also went by the nickname Exy. This trip aboard the famed Brigantine Yankee which can be tracked from the datelines of the letters make for one of the most exotic groups of correspondence we have seen. Adding even more of an air to this archive of the group's circumnavigation the Johnson's last was the fact that it was documented by the National Geographic Society for television. Long breezy very detailed intimate letters covering the papers she used in smallish type provide fascinating detail delivered with a youthful exuberance that jumps off the pages.
