In 1889 The Konchalovskys Moved To Moscow And Their House Became A Part Of The Moscow Art Scene Of The 1890S. Their House Was Often Visited By Valentin Serov Mikhail Vrubel Vasily Surikov. A Famous Painting Shows Alexei Tolstoy Visiting Them. Later Pyotr Married A Daughter Of Vasily Surikov Who Always Praised The Art Of His Son-In-Law. During His Gymnasium Years Konchalovsky Attended Classes Of Moscow School Of Painting Sculpture And Architecture. In 1896-1898 He Traveled To Paris And Studied At The Académie Julian. In 1899 He Returned To Russia And Entered The Imperial Academy Of Arts In Saint Petersburg Graduating In 1907. At The Academy He Studied Under Savinsky Zaleman And Kovalevsky.Since 1909 He Exhibited Frequently Participating In The Golden Fleece Fraternity Mir Iskusstva And New Society Of Artists. He Was A Founding Member Of The Society Jack Of Diamonds In 1909. Beginning In 1918 He Taught Art. In 1922 He Had His First Solo Exhibition At The Tretyakov Gallery. During That Period He Mostly Drew Still Lifes And Landscapes. His Paintings-As Of All Other Jacks Of Diamond-Were Strongly Influenced By Paul Cézanne. Later He Started To Paint Portraits Often Ceremonial Portraits That Were Considered As The Examples Of Socialist Realism Style. Konchalovsky Was A Very Prolific Painter And Is Known To Have Created More Than Five Thousand Works. Many Of His Descendants Were People In The World Of Art. His Son Mikhail Petrovich Konchalovsky B. 1906 Was A Notable Painter. His Daughter Natalia Konchalovskaya 1903-1988 Was A Notable Children's Writer And Her Husband Sergei Mikhalkov Was A Notable Poet The Author Of Children's Poetry And Two Versions Of The National Anthem Of The Soviet Union And The Present National Anthem Of Russia. What Did the President Mean When He Suggested "A More Enlightened View" / Must We Amend the Constitution or Is There Safely Another Way
This Arizona educator and college dean wrote books about government as well; from 1937 to 1953 served that state in Congress as a Democratic representative. Two offprints from the "Congressional Record" each 1p recto and verso 8½" X 11" dated 21 January 1937 and 16 February 1937 respectively. Very good. Faint original mailing folds. These two offprints both concern President Franklin D. Roosevelt's disastrous 1937 "Judicial Procedures Reform Bill" or "court-packing plan" legislation that would have allowed him to enlarge the court in such a way that would help push through his New Deal initiatives. It proved quite controversial and ultimately failed. But only two weeks after taking his congressional seat for the first time Murdock the newbie M.C. stood up to support FDR's plan. He opens modestly professing "it is rather presumptuous of me as a new man to rise so early in the session and explain in an offhand way my attitude toward the great issues which now confront us." and concludes that he does not favor a constitutional amendment to approve FDR's plan. His second speech delivered less than one month later continues to oppose a constitutional amendment and to support Roosevelt concluding "I trust the President and cannot bring myself to give any credence to the charge that he is attempting to become a dictator." At the conclusion of each of these speeches Murdock signs large bold and in full in black ink. This choice pair is accompanied by a Typed Letter Signed rubberstamp 1p 8" X 10½" Washington DC n.y. Very good. On "Congress of the United States" letterhead the neophyte congressmen writes to "Dear Fellow Citizen" that "So large a number of my constituents have written me regarding the proposed judicial changes that I find it convenient to send copies of my speeches and this form letter because I cannot reply to each individually." He then backpeddles wildly: "Please note. that my maiden speech. was merely explaining what I thought the President meant in his first message to this Congress. This was fifteen days before his message recommending judicial changes. I had no idea that he would make any proposals nor what he would suggest if he did propose change. I feel that those of you who have written me in such grave alarm have been unduly perturbed in this matter." In other words he didn't feel FDR's court-packing plan would succeed. Ironically this form letter is signed using a rubber stamp -- even though the second-to-last paragraph of his second speech begins "I too dislike being dubbed a 'rubber stamp'"! A delightful trio -- and fortunately the original recipient future Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 had the foresight to request that Murdock sign each of his speeches. Nippon Mura Offered Summer Cottages In What Is Described As A Semi-Oriental Style Situated In A Garden Landscaped With Wisteria Iris Cherry Blossoms And Chrysanthemums. The Torii Tearoom Was An Important Garden Feature. Nippon Mura Attracted Distinguished Guests From Both Other States And Foreign Lands. Of The Three In Saratoga It Is The Garden That Has Mostly Disappeared It'S Charming Structures Now Nearly Buried Under Layers Of Additions. Most Of The Scenic Garden Has Been Paved For A Parking Lot. Today The Site Of Nippon Mura Is Known As Hacienda Inn A Restaurant And Hotel Located On Highway 9 Between Los Gatos And Saratoga. But Garden Sleuths May Recognize The Significance Of The Area By The Giant Eucalyptuses That Still Appear In The Parking Lot. Two volumes pp vi 496; vi 496 some age-toning and slight blemishes a few lightly turned cornes but overall good sound and tight internally contemporary full calf a bit worn and bumped the boards showing though at the corners a tear to the upper cover of the second volume which has been neatly secured the rear joint of the first volume is cracked but still firm. An uncommon early edition. Dr John Murray FRSE FGS 17781820 was a short-lived 19th century British physician and prominent scientist working in the fields of physics chemistry and geology and described by Brydges as a "Chemical Philiospher". His first important published work "Elements of Chemistry" appeared when he was only 23. He was born in Edinburgh in 1778 and educated at the High School. He studied Medicine at St Andrews University graduating around 1798. He appears in Edinburgh again in 1810 as a lecturer in Chemistry. He later also lectured in Materia Medica Pharmacy and Natural Philosophy Physics. In 1812 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh for his contributions to Geology his proposers being Thomas Charles Hope Robert Jameson and Sir George Steuart Mackenzie. He was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1815 and was also elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society of London. He presented 28 papers to the Royal Society the most important relating to proposals for a safety lamp for miners. He received his doctorate MD in 1814. Second edition. Full Leather. Good. Superb half-length portrait of a cigar-waving Murray eyeballing Bob Hope who's holding up Murray's 1960 memoir "Life on a Pogo Stick." Murray inscribes the upper left area around his head in a funky blue ballpoint "Best regards / To Donald Burnell / from -- / Ken / Murray." Contrast good. A fun fun piece. unknown

A Selection from Bishop Horne's Commentary on Psalms
Philadelphia: Published by Bradford and Inskeep 1812. Hardcover. Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. 12mo. xii 238 pages. The binding measures 7 inches tall by just about 4 1/2 inches wide. Hardcover bound in full tan leather. Binding is rubbed has bumping at corners and a small carved mark at the bottom of the rear board. The outer hinges have been reinforced with Japanese tissue. There is a red label pastedown and gilt bands. They are not raised. Endpapers are foxed. There is writing on the front/rear flyleaves and the front pastedown. "No 11" "Miss Scott Book 1878" The ink is rather heavy in some parts of the name making it hard to read. Text is toned has foxing. Some pages are chipped at the fore-edge and others show light damping. The inner hinges are secure. The corners of the text block are rounded and appear to have been trimmed that way. Text is toned and foxed and has some damp stains especially at the fore edge. Lindley Murray 1745-1826 was an American Quaker grammarian and lawyer and his was one of the most popular readers in America in the early and mid-19th century. He was born in Pennsylvania but lived for a time as a child in North Carolina until his family moved to New York in 1753. He studied law and became a successful lawyer but his interests lay in science and literature and in the 1780s he retired to England to write and to follow literary pursuits. This is a commentary on the Psalms and is NOT a Psalter. It does not contain the text of the Psalms. <br/> <br/> Published by Bradford and Inskeep hardcover

Now I think your first remark on this subject is the right one if it is a pity you qualified it for if the facts were known they would go to strengthen confidence in modern English art which it stands much in need of now that the Trade has for its own reasons taken up any art but modern English.I may say as I think it will interest you to know the fact that Mrs. Coutts Michie wife of the Scottish painter James Coutts Michie herself on the evening of the RA soiree volunteered to me the statement that their disappointment in the sale was the miserable show made by the foreign portion of the sale on which she assured me they had lost £14000."etc. Printed heading of the Arts Club Dover St. crossed through and 1 Langham Chambers Portland Place substituted. 6th July 1913.Traces of mounting to blank side of conjugate leaf. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original business card. Slightly chipped left bottom corner. In Ottoman script. Ibrahim Edhem Pasha, (1819-1893) was an Ottoman statesman, who held the office of Grand Vizier in the beginning of Abdul Hamid II's reign between 5 February 1877 and 11 January 1878. He served numerous administrative positions in the Ottoman Empire including minister of foreign affairs in 1856, then ambassador to Berlin in 1876, and to Vienna from 1879 to 1882. He also served as a military engineer and as Minister of Interior from 1883 to 1885. In 1876-1877, he represented the Ottoman Government at the Constantinople Conference. Ibrahim Edhem Pasha was the father of Osman Hamdi Bey, a well-known archaeologist and painter, as well the founder of the Istanbul Archaeology Museum and the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. Another son, Halil Edhem Eldem took up the archaeology museum after Osman Hamdi Bey's death and has been a deputy for ten years under the newly founded Turkish Republic. Yet another son, Ismail Galib Bey, is considered as the founder of numismatics as a scientific discipline in Turkey. Later generations of the family also produced illustrious names. The architect Sedat Hakki Eldem, a cousin, is one of the pillars of the search for modern architectural styles adopted by the Republic of Turkey (called the Republican style in the Turkish context) in its early years and which marks many important buildings dating from the period of the 1920s and the 1930s. A great-grandson, Burak Eldem, is a writer while another, Edhem Eldem, is a renowned historian. More names include Erol Eldem, Tiana Eldem, Levent Eldem and Ercan Eldem, an architect. With 2pp publisher's catalogue bound in at end. First edition of this popular fable drawn originally from the Ossian-Fingal legends.The author 1808-1880 was the brother and biographer of Alphonse de Musset.
