Boards stamped in blind with a large Cathedral plate with foliate scrollwork motifs that seem to reproduce the front cover. Edges gilt. Interior border. Fresh overall but foxing on the frontispiece and title leaf. Traces of rubbing. One upper edge slightly bumped over 0.5cm. The figure p. 341 is missing. Captioned tissue guards present. Handsome copy in a full contemporary binding. The plate used for the boards seems particularly well suited to the work cathedral motifs softened by ornaments foliage and other elements. ‎1929 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM DETAILING A SIGNIFICANT RELIEF EXPEDITION TO CHINA BY TEN POMONA COLLEGE STUDENTS‎

‎CHINA. Very Good. 1929. On offer is a super significant photograph album detailing an important 1929 through 1930 'Oriental Study Expedition' requested and underwritten by the well known Durfee Foundation wherein ten Pomona College students traveled on a one-year expedition to China. Some later pictures show them in Mongolia in 1931 and Bulgaria in 1934. The book was kept and we assume compiled by Oliver H. Haskell b.1908 who later served as director of the China Aid Council of the American League for Peace and Democracy and traveled through the Soviet Union. He reflected on relations between China and Russia and the impact of the 1930 expedition on his adult life. There are approximately 112 snapshot photographs contained in old disbound album. The photos are for the most part good but it must be noted that the album proper is a wreck. Casual research finds that in a series of interviews in 1989 Mr. Haskell discussed his family background and early life his initial career objectives and political views his relationship with Avery and Tsui his involvement in the Expedition despite his own initial rejection of the idea. He discussed his prior knowledge of China and Japan his first impressions and he relates the social activities of the group the attitudes of the Chinese students and famine relief work. Other interviews record the recollections of these men as to: planning the expedition; the year of travel in China; and their reflections on the impact the trip had on their lives. The interviews are part of an Oriental Study Expedition Archive housed in Special Collections of the Honnold Library at Claremont Graduate University. Pomona College is a private residential liberal arts college in Claremont California. The founding member of the Claremont Colleges Pomona is a non-sectarian coeducational school. Olivier Maillard 1430-1502 Vicar General of the Franciscan observant of France in 1502 is one of the greatest figures of the Franciscan order at the end of the XV. From Brittany and died in Toulouse he was a preacher of Louis XI and the Duke of Burgundy. His reputation is mainly based on the preaching he did during the years 1494 and 1508 in the church of Saint-Jean en Greve in Paris and strange liberties he gave it. He seemed never find the word hard enough nor sufficiently vivid expression to his sermons. ""Nobody had ever attacked all classes and all social professions more boldly virulence and tasteless. Each of his sermons is a bitter and outrageous satire covered with foul language trivial and words borrowed from bad places of the lowest ""Hoefer. The style of Olivier Maillard was rated ""Macaronic"" by Sainte-Beuve in his historical and critical Table of poetry and the French theater in the eighteenth century.
