‎1878 - 1887 HANDWRITTEN MINUTES OF ORILLIA SCHOOL TRUSTEES MEETINGS OFFERING A GLIMPSE OF THE EARLY ONTARIO SCHOOLS HISTORY AND LOCAL EVENTS INCLUDING ELOPEMENT OF THE FIRST HEADMASTER OF ORILLIA'S FIRST HIGH SCHOOL‎

‎Orillia Ontario. Good. 1878. On offer is a book containing minutes of the Board of Trustees Meetings of School Section No 4 covering the period from January 1878 to January 1897 that gives an insight of what issues the school board dealt with in those years including financial support expenses school building operation and selection of teachers. The book has 64 pages and includes minutes of 69 meetings two pages documenting payments to a school teacher for the year of 1879. The school was built in 1876 a little more than a year before this book was started and 7 years after Ryerson proposed his 1871 Education Act requiring adequate accommodation for students in every school section. The Meeting agenda usually included election of trustees and chair adoption of annual reports and approval of various expenses: "it was proposed by Mr. Brailey seconded by D. M. Kaughan that the sum of six dollars be appropriated for Prize that the Section do also procure at same time a Daily Register.that the Section be empowered to procure a copy of the amended School Law of Copp Clark and Co." More serious matters concerned repairs construction and school house insurance: ".a Petition to be sent into the council legalize the Muskoka road passing the school house." "Section will be instructed to issue tenders for digging a well at the school and also see to the repairing of the plaster at the School House". In 1880 the routine was interrupted when School's first headmaster Mr. Gardiner left his wife and eloped with an eighteen-year-old to Detroit telegraphing his resignation which made the Trustee Board urgently look for a new teacher: "Several applications for the position of teacher in the room of W. G. Gardiner who has scandalously absconded from the neighbourhood and deserted his post as Teacher were considered by the Trustees but action in the matter was deferred to the future meeting". Finding a new teacher was not an easy task: "The Trustees proceeded to examine three applications made for the position of Teacher in the Sec-n. none of which met their entire approval.proposed that the school be kept vacant till the end of the year that the Sec. 4 do insert advertisements in the Toronto papers for a male teacher at a salary of 300$ per annum". Only a month and a half later in the end of December they hired a new Master of the School at a salary of 260$. In addition to teaching schoolmaster's duties included lighting the fires and sweeping the school and also planting trees: "Mr. Smith teacher be allowed to plant shade trees in front of the school premises within the fence adjoining the Muskoka road and that he receive 50 c. per tree for planting the same with the understanding that in the event of any of the said trees dying during the year that he agrees to replace the same with fresh trees and it is understood that said trees shall be maple and balsam alternately.". The meeting of December 1882 approved 2$ contribution to the Ryerson Memorial Fund. In 1885 the Public School Inspection gave instructions on improvements and repairs to be done including "wood shed construction replastering of the school house increasing blackboard accommodation and fixing privies". The book contains names of School Board Trustees and teachers and of some local residents performing work for the school. Endpapers foxed Note: Paulus Orosius 5th century A.D. was a priest from Portugal. Fled before the Vandals he became a pupil of Augustine. It is on his instigation that Orosius wrote his 'Historia adversus Paganos' the first Christian universal history from the creation of the world to the founding and history of Rome until A.D. 417. His pagan sources for Roman history were Livy Tacitus Suetonius Justinus and Eutropius. We see here the course of history through the eyes of his master Augustine who asked Orosius to write a historiographic 'supplement' to his 'City of God'. The work was apologetic and attacked the pagan complaint that Rome's troubles were caused by her abandonment of the pagan Gods. He proved that there were also sufferings before the rise of Christianity. 'Ego initium miseriae hominum ab initio peccati hominis docere ducere institui' he tells the reader in the first chapter and wanted to demonstrate that the sufferings of humanity diminished since Christ. The History was widely read in the Middle Ages. Neue Pauly 953/4 § An edition of this work was produced by the Dutch scholar Siegbert Havercamp 1684/174 since 1721 professor of Greek at Leiden University. Schoenemann praises Havercamp because he offered also the 'praefationes' of worthy predecessors. Havercamp included the complete commentary on the 'Historiae' of Franz Fabricius of Düren also called Marcoduranus 1527-1572. Fabricius studied in Paris under Ramus and Turnebus and published much on Cicero. His Orosius edition dates from 1561. Sandys 2268 and ADB 6507 Havercamp also incorporated the commentary of Ludovicus Lautius a Flemish priest who's commentary was published in 1615 in Mainz. Van der Aa 11214 Provenance: In the right margin of the title a small oval embossed ownership stamp of the 'Free Church College Library Glasgow'. The 'Free Church College Library' Glasgow was established in 1856 and renamed 'United Free Church College Library' after the reunion of the 'Free Church of Scotland and United Presbyterian Church' in 1900; then it was renamed 'Trinity College Library' after reunion of the 'United Free Church' and the 'Church of Scotland' in 1929. ‎WINTER HILL MASSACHUSETTS SOMERVILLE MA. Good with no dust jacket. 1867. Full-Leather. On offer is a very interesting post-Civil-War-era manuscript diary handwritten by Orsment Woodberry in Somerville Massachusetts just outside Boston. Woodberry was a carpenter/builder who wrote daily in this diary starting on May 1 1867 and ending on May 11th 1869. At the time of writing he lived on Central Street in the Somerville neighborhood of Winter Hill. Woodberry was married to Miriam Johnson Woodberry daughter of Philip Johnson of Newburyport MA. They celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary on September 20th 1867 and his diary entry that day includes the names of many of the people who were there to celebrate. Included are his sister Charlotte and his Aunt Sally M. Sargent for whom he ends up building a house. The diary mentions two homes owned by Woodberry’s family on Federal Street in Newberryport. The address recorded is 24th Federal Street. Here are some snippets: 1867 "May 9th & 10th Pleasant. Got the deed from Currier and all signed. Saw Gallagher and settled about the house he is to go in on 15th. Paid for fixing pump. Afternoon made rounds with Mr. Pierce and freelanced to see about selling houses and took a look at the city. Got all ready to go home to Somerville…Pleasant. At 9 ½ left with Charlotte for Boston 10 A. M train in E. RR. Home at Winter Hill. To dinner 1 P. M. Found Merriam no better. Potatoes planted. Looked around things." "September 20th Pleasant. Digging potatoes. The family getting ready to celebrate our 25th anniversary or Silver Wedding. Eliza Agnes came up from N. Port. Eve all the following were present. Mrs. Philip Johnson Sally M. Sargent Charlotte W. Symons Philip Johnson and wife Fred W. Johnson and wife and son Walter. Charlotte E. Johnson C. Woodberry M. Woodberry P. O. Woodberry and wife N. Y. Woodberry Eliza A. Woodberry Charles A. Davis and William H. Woodberry. 18 in all. Had a pleasant time and valuable presents. We were remembered by all that were here and some that could not be present. We left before 12 M." "December 6th Pleasant but cold. Miss Crosby came up to pass the day. Went up to the auction of Miss A. Tuft's old house and contents. Then went and saw the new chapel building by Oakman. Found Mrs. Reid here to see sister Agnes from the city. Some little snow and rain fell in the afternoon. Mr. Crosby and wife called and took Alice down to East Somerville with them. Eve some rain with high wind from south. Boys have a fine time. Two of the Hanson boys here and E. Mainard came over…." 1868: "February 4th & 5th Pleasant and more mild. About the house all day. Deed came for Charlotte to sign of the two houses on Federal Street. Sold to Dr. Gale for 4500 dollars. This is all the real estate of M. Symons. Sale is law…. Pleasant and milder but still cold. About the house. Bill of Administration came for the signature of C. W. Symons. Signed and returned. Eve tea party at Mr. Stickney's and Agnes went. Paid Brook's bill of lumber. 8 P. M. Snowing." "February 16th Pleasant rather cool. Barker came. Brown bread and beans for breakfast. Folks off to Sunday school. E. Agnes and Alice to church. Afternoon Nick Alice and E. Agnes went over to Phillip's and spent the afternoon. The full-leather diary measures about 4 inches by 6.5 inches. Although the cover is worn and a bit stained the pages and binding look great. All regarding aviation aeronautics airships flying machines blimps dirigibles etc. all different 6" x11" four or more pages each some as many as nine pages with exact reproductions of the inventor's drawings and specifications. This archive even with cursory glance will find many familiar names in early aviation including Orville and Wilbur Wright G.H. Curtiss and many many hundreds more see a partial listing at the end of this description. The largest category is flying machines but also patents steering propeller parachutes helicopters dirigible hanger etc. etc. Overall in very good condition save for some age-toning and rust from old pins and staples. The small number have folds crunches and rips and tears. All patents include very detailed drawings of the invention.
