Each page contains work in pencil beginning with basic shapes and letters and concluding with several pages of landscapes and other scenes. From the 8th leaf onward they are dated from April to June 1876 and then 2 from Nov. possibly 1879. In Good Condition: remains of marbled paper along spine possible old repair; cover is soiled; loss at edges; lacking final leaf; chipping to edges of tissue paper; otherwise clean and solid. paperback

DRUMMER'S YARNS AND FUNNY JOKES
New York: Excelsior Publishing Co. 1911. Original Paper Wraps. Good. This 1911 copy of the "19th crop" of "Drummer's Yarns and Funny Jokes" subtitled "Original and Selected American Humor with Many Laughable Illustrations" is typical of a sub-genre of the pulp magazine precursors to comic books widely circulated at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Named for and generally associated with "drummers" or traveling salesmen known for their often entertaining "spiels" laced with jokes and humor to appeal to whomever and whatever they were trying to "sell" these throw-away magazines could be found in train stations tobacco shops barber shops and hotels and diners wherever "drummers" and other travelers were likely to congregate. About 7 x 9 3/4 inches 96 pages in pictorial paper wrappers featuring front-cover illustration of young man in derby and vest with luggage at both feet and wearing large welcoming smile bordered in red against a green background with white lettering. Back cover contains ads for nine other publications including "Hoyle's Games" "Brown's Business Correspondence " and Payne's Social Letter-Writer." Contents include jokes short humorous stories numerous humorous black & white cartoons and illustrations as well as at the back two pages of publisher's ads. Text is complete clean and unmarked. Binding is basically intact and holding well. Spine strip with black lettering including 25-cent original price is badly chipped with large fragments missing. Previous owner's signature and home town written twice on front cover once on back; also pair of one-inch closed tears on front cover fore edge. Back cover stained and worn but all printed matter legible. Keep in mind that this remnant of humor and lifestyle from over a hundred years ago contains examples of humor that is today considered racist and disrespectful of many religions occupations and national origins. It is a small piece of American history created to be read and trashed making any copies that have survived quite scarce and collectable. <br/> <br/> Excelsior Publishing Co. paperback

This print taken from the Saint-Jean district in Geneva on the right bank of the Rhone was later added to a set of Italian landscapes in an amicorum album among engravings lithographs drawings and wash. Executed in the first quarter of the 19th century these prints summarize the stages of the ""Grand Tour"" of Italy and its surroundings the obligatory journey of the post-Napoleonic nobility who came to Italy or Switzerland to make an artistic and bucolic pilgrimage to the great Renaissance works urban panoramas and delightful mountain lakes. The European aristocracy was therefore fond of these prints of good graphic quality enhanced by brilliant colors which brought together the high places of architecture and the Italian and Swiss countryside. unknown

Built at the end of the 17th century it was transformed into a real urban garden before undergoing enlargements in the Napoleonic era by architects Stefano Gasse and Paolo Ambrosino who added paths and flower beds in the romantic style. The gardens with the Place de la Victoire in the distance are here depicted as they were at the beginning of the XIXth century. This type of Neapolitan watercolors was popular among wealthy European travelers who carried out the traditional ""Tour d'Italia"" a pilgrimage through the bucolic landscapes and large cities of Italy. Radulphe Pierre January 1834 32 x 50 cm one leaf A very nice illustrated certificate in coated watercolors gum and manuscript of a master fencer signed by all the masters of the garrison at Ancona 66th Infantry Regiment on the occasion of Jean François Victor Léger a student of Pierre Radulphe receiving the rank of Master of «Counterpoint» sabre. «We the masters of counterpoint in the garrison of Ancona having examined the abilities of sieur Léger Jean François Victor hereby record our having received him as Master as a token of which we have issued him with the present Bre vet for his benefit and to witness what is true and therefore invite our brothers in arms to lend him aid and assistance wherever he shall have earned their esteem and friendship.» A nice fencing scene in the foreground of the document. Marginal spotting as well as a few repairs using paper strips to verso. The town of Ancona where this certificate was issued was occupied by French troops from 1832 to 1838 which is to say during the Italian crisis pitting France against Austria in a battle for influence in the peninsula. Fencing was widespread during in Empire period when each regiment had its Master of Arms. Optional in the army from 1815 on it was made obligatory once more in 1824 before becoming optional again in 1834 the year this document was produced. A highly regulated discipline fencing inspired a number of writers including Stendhal Dumas and others before becoming an Olympic sport in 1896. unknown
