‎11-Star “Stars and Bars” Confederate States of America Flag.‎

‎1861. Rare Civil War era Confederate States of America Flag in use between July 2 and November 28 1861 commemorating the admittance of Tennessee and North Carolina into the Confederacy. Cotton hand-sewn and double-sided. The entire piece measures 36 inches by 50.5 inches. In near fine condition. The Confederacy's first official national flag often called the Stars and Bars flew from March 4 1861 to May 1 1863. It was designed by Prussian-American artist Nicola Marschall in Marion Alabama and is said to resemble the Flag of Austria with which Marschall would have been familiar. The original version of the flag featured a circle of seven white stars in the navy blue canton representing the seven states of the South that originally composed the Confederacy: South Carolina Mississippi Florida Alabama Georgia Louisiana and Texas. As the Confederacy grew so did the numbers of stars: two were added for Virginia and Arkansas in May 1861 followed by two more representing Tennessee and North Carolina in July and finally two more for Missouri and Kentucky neither of these two states seceded but partisan factional "governments" declared secession without achieving control of substantial territory or population in either case. "While Civil War flags escaped much of the mortal rigidity of mechanical mass production their artistic merit was more particularly due to the delicate design relationship of the elements and to numerous subtle details - such as the directions of the arms of the stars which we never entirely regimented as they are on modern flags. And truly no modern replica can either do justice to the artistic character or render the ‘patina’ of one of these antique flags†Mastai & Mastai 124. unknown‎

‎1870 Cuban Slave Trade Manuscript Advertisements and Announcements about Cubans Seeking Slaves Returning Slaves and Much More‎

‎Havana Cuba. Good with no dust jacket. 1870. Non-Book. On offer is a remarkable manuscript advertisement similar to the modern "Classified" pages for the month of March 1870. In this case the ads list 41 specific needs for slaves as requested by Cuban owners. This document contains three pages of listings mostly describing the need for slaves to purchase or rent though there are some variations within the listings. There are multiple listings for Cubans seeking "emancipated slave s to rent" one looking for a specific named black female negra someone returning a slave from the island of Dominica a listing about multiple negros being consigned to a College a notice about sending a Black man pardo to jail a notice of 15 slaves being available for rental and much more. This document is remarkable in its depth of information about the slave trade is it in the 1870s which was running consecutively with the Chinese coolie trade. This ad was likely posted in a Town Hall or similar. Cuba had a great need for inexpensive labour to support their sugar industry. While America and Britain signed a treaty in 1814 to abolish the African slave trade it took many years for complete global abolition. The African slave trade was not ended in Cuba until 1886 despite it being formally abolished in 1867 Yun & Laremont 2001. During the Chinese coolie trade 1847-1874 African slaves often worked alongside Chinese indentured labourers. Measures approx 12x8.5 inches. Three leaves one with with handwriting on the verso and recto and one with handwriting on only the recto. Age toning small tears on the edge and one small hole in the document that does not impact readability. Legible. Spanish Language. Overall G. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 3 pages; Signed by Author . unknown‎

‎1874 Matanzas Cuba Travel Pass Salvoconducto for a Free Man of Color Illustrating Colonial Racial Surveillance‎

‎Matanzas Havana Cuba. Good with no dust jacket. 1874. Non-Book. On offer is a striking colonial-era Cuban salvoconducto an official internal passport authorizing the movement of a free man of color during the turbulent decade of the Ten Years’ War. Issued in Matanzas on June 6 1874 the document is written on official blue papel sellado printed “SELLO 8.º AÑO DE 1874 – 2 PESETAS 50 CÉNTIMOS” and bears serial number No. 085.894. The handwritten header at upper left denotes the registry number and date of issue boldly penned in brown ink beside the embossed seal of the Gobierno Político y Militar de Matanzas. The certificate is signed by José Benítez y Cobos Inspector de Vigilancia del Distrito del Sur de esta Ciudad confirming that Francisco Hernández a 25-year-old pardo free man of color “se halla en este puerto salvo de castigo” is free of punishment and is permitted to travel to Sagua la Grande. The left margin records a detailed physical description: “"Edad 25 años; color pardo; pelo crespo; frente regular; ojos pardos; nariz ancha; boca regular; barba poca” Age 25; brown complexion; curly hair; regular forehead; brown eyes; wide nose; regular mouth; sparse beard. The text further notes that Hernández carries the approval of his Comandante General and a corresponding travel permit issued by Sub-Lieutenant Bustamante. This manuscript illustrates colonial racial surveillance in late 19th-century Cuba when free Afro-Cubans were still required to carry travel passes closely resembling the older slave papeletas de registro. Issued in the final years of the Ten Years’ War 1868–1878 it reflects the administrative continuity that would soon transform into the Patronato system 1880–1886 under which freed people remained bound to their former masters under the guise of “apprenticeship. ”The document remains fully legible and complete written in brown ink on a single folio leaf approx. 8½ × 12½ in. with the embossed government seal printed fiscal heading and all signatures intact. Minor age toning and light handling wear; otherwise very good condition. An exceptionally well-preserved salvoconducto representing the bureaucratic intersection of race labor and mobility in colonial Cuba during one of its most politically charged decades. Overall G. One page 8½ × 12½ in. ink on official papel sellado Sello 8.º Año de 1874. Toning and bends present and heavy text in the upper left corner slightly torn through. Appropriate to age. Spanish language. Translation completed by online software. ; Manuscripts; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 1 pages; Signed by Author . unknown‎

Later 19th-century brown cloth spine with original boards. Engraved cover title: A Catalogue of the Contents of Strawberry Hill. Engraved title page. George Robins the auctioneer advertised the sale to begin on April 25 1842 and continue for 24 days.
