A gigantic survey of Egypt at the time of Bonaparte's conquests in 1798 and 1799 the work is divided into 13 volumes of engravings making up 892 plates of which 72 colored as well as presenting the splendors of the Egypt of the Pharaohs in 9 volumes. The other volumes discuss natural history and present a fascinating portrait of Coptic and Islamic Egypt as it was seen by Bonaparte's Eastern Armies. The ‘Egyptian campaign' militarily a disaster demonstrates through the engravings of the Description d'Egypte the scientific success it nonetheless became thanks to the 167 expert members of the Commission of the Sciences and Arts of the Institut d'Egypte Egyptian Institute who followed Napoleon's army. Imprimerie Impériale Paris 1809-1829 53.50 x 71 cm une feuille Original unshaved full-page etching from the “Imperial edition” of the Description de l'Égypte or ‘Recueil des observations et recherches faites en Égypte pendant l'expédition française publié par les ordres de Sa Majesté l'Empereur Napoléon le Grand A Collection of the observations and research carried out in Egypt during the French expedition published on the orders of his Majesty the Emperor Napoleon the Great'.Produced between February 1802 and 1830 on the orders of Naopleon Bonaparte and published between 1809 and 1828 1000 copies were printed and distributed to institutions on vergé paper with an 'Égypte ancienne et moderne' watermark visible when held up to the light. Light marginal spotting not touching image otherwise in very fresh fine condition. An engraving from the Description de l'Egypte one of the masterpieces of French printing and the birth of a new field: Egyptology. A gigantic survey of Egypt at the time of Bonaparte's conquests in 1798 and 1799 the work is divided into 13 volumes of engravings making up 892 plates of which 72 colored as well as presenting the splendors of the Egypt of the Pharaohs in 9 volumes. The other volumes discuss natural history and present a fascinating portrait of Coptic and Islamic Egypt as it was seen by Bonaparte's Eastern Armies. The ‘Egyptian campaign' militarily a disaster demonstrates through the engravings of the Description d'Egypte the scientific success it nonetheless became thanks to the 167 expert members of the Commission of the Sciences and Arts of the Institut d'Egypte Egyptian Institute who followed Napoleon's army. The Institut gathered together in Egypt the mathematician Monge the chemist Berthollet the naturalist Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire as well as numerous artists engineers architects and doctors. They were tasked with re-discovering modern and ancient Egypt and displaying its natural treasures as well as the know-how of its inhabitants.This edition the so-called “Imperial” edition of the plates for the Description de l'Egypte was printed in four large formats two of which were specially created for it and christened “Moyen-Egypte” and “Grand-Egypte”. A special press was built to print it the process extending over 20 years from 1809 to 1829. The “Imperial” edition proved so popular that a second edition this time in black and white and without the “Egypte ancienne et moderne” watermark – known as the “Royal Edition” – was published during the Restoration by the printing house of C.-L.-F. Panckoucke Paris.The engravings of the Description d'Egypte owe a great deal to Baron Dominique-Vivant Denon illustrator diplomat collector and later Director of the Musée Napoléon the Louvre. His exploration of the South of Egypt gave Bonaparte the idea of sending the experts of the Institut there thus creating a faithful and complete portrait of the area. This was the research gathered together from 1802 in the mammoth Description de L'Egypte.Denon embarked on this story of archeological exploration at the age of 51 reaching first Alexandria and then Cairo before exploring Upper Egypt. Along with the members of the Institut d'Egypte the Natural History Museum's painter H.J. Redouté brother of Pierre-Joseph Redouté author of Roses the mineralogist Dolomiue and the draughtsman Joly Denon then explored the Nile Delta and Lower Egypt. When however he joined the 21st Light Infantry Regiment as it marched across Upper Egypt in pursuit of the retreating Mameluks in November 1798 he found himself the only civilian. In the very midst of the battle itself he reeled off sketches of the works of art that peppered his path right up to the threshold of the Sudan. ‎The Cornell All-American football guard later coached the University of Cincinnati and at Pennsylvania College; in 1918 he was elected to Congress from New York as a Republican and was reelected 20 times serving until his death. ALS 2pp single leaf 8½" X 11" "In France" postmarked Paris 1918 January 4. Addressed to "Aunt & Auntee." Near fine. Excellent World War One content penned on the evee of his election to Congress reading in part: "We are leaving for England. after a short time in London we will start for home. I have seen a great deal since leaving home. We have travelled more than 1000 miles in France by auto & I don't know how far by train. I shall bring pictures of most that we have seen & notes that will explain all that we have seen. Aside from this we will have lantern slides & moving pictures." He also notes "It has been a great & thrilling experience to see the battle fields along the entire front. I never thought so much destruction of homes happiness & resources possible." On offer is an original archive of 85 letters and approximately a dozen pieces of ephemera being an archive of multi generation family correspondence between sisters nieces brothers and cousins in north central Massachusetts and dating from 1851 through 1905 but primarily 1855 - 1890. The main recipient is Hattie Reed wife of James Reed. Research suggest 3 main tracks of correspondence: the Reed family the Woods family and the Merrill family figure prominently in the letters but there are also letters from friends and other family including Fletcher Boutelle Willie Proctor Emily Chandler G. Blair Daby . Most letters are dated Massachusetts towns: Lowell Ayers Farmingham Amherst Townsend Harbor Norwood East Cambridge and Ashburnham. Of the 85 letters approximately 19 are in what appears to be old German and some come from Europe and others from Maine. Research suggests from clues in the English language letters that Hattie was of German stock based in Maine Monmouth. This is a treasure of genealogy history and Americana. John Rawlings Rees Cbe Frcp 1890 -1969 Also Known As 'Jack' Or 'J.R.' Was A British Civilian And Military Psychiatrist. He Joined The Friends Ambulance Unit In 1914 And Later Became A Medical Officer In The Royal Army Medical Corps. Rees Was Placed In Charge Of A Motor Ambulance Unit In Mesopotamia Until 1919. Hugh Crichton-Miller Invited Rees To Work With Him At A Private Psychiatric Nursing Home Bowden House Harrow On The Hill. Rees Married Mary Isobel Hemingway 1887 -19541. Their Marriage Occurred Shortly After Rees And Crichton-Miller Created The Tavistock Square Clinic For Functional Nervous Disorders A Voluntary Hospital Which Opened In 1920. The Clinic Specialized In The New 'Dynamic Psychologies' Of Sigmund Freud And His Followers And In Particular The Object Relations Theory Of Ronald Fairbairn And Others. As Well As Educating Others At The Clinic Rees Took The Dph In 1920 And Mrcp In 1936. Rees Was One Of The Key Figures At The Original Tavistock Clinic And Became Its Medical Director From 1933. He Began To Make Plans To Establish An Institute Of Medical Psychology With Beds And More Opportunities To Train People In Psychiatric Methods And Bought A Site In Bloomsbury To Build It But His Plans Were Halted By The Outbreak Of The Second World War. Rees Was Appointed Consulting Psychiatrist To The British Army During The Second World War. According To Eric Trist In 1941 A Group Of Psychiatrists At The Tavistock Clinic Were Asked To Join The Directorate Of Army Psychiatry And Did So As A Group. During The War Rees Oversaw His Colleagues' Experiments With Group Psychotherapy 'Therapeutic Communities' Morale Rehabilitation And Selection Tests. The Work Which Occupied Most Of Rees Time During The War Was The Case Of Rudolf Hess. Together With Henry Dicks A Fellow Member Of The Tavistock Clinic Group Rees Was Charged With The Care Of Hitler's Deputy At The Secret Prison Locations Where He Was Held Following His Capture After Landing In Scotland. Over The Four-Year Period From June 1941 To Hess' Appearance At The Nuremberg Trial In 1945 Rees Was A Member Of The Three-Man British Panel With Churchill's Personal Physician Lord Moran And Eminent Neurologist Dr George Riddoch Which Assessed Hess's Capability To Stand Trial For War Crimes. He Received Awards Including The Thomas Salmon Memorial Lectureship Of The New York Academy Of Medicine In 1944 The William Withering Lectureship At The University Of Birmingham In 1945 And Shared The First New Lasker Award With Brock Chisholm In 1945. After The War The Tavistock Clinic Underwent Considerable Changes In Which Rees Played A Key Role. Rees' Plans For An Institute Of Medical Psychology Were Never Realized; Instead The Group Went On To Found The Tavistock Institute With Funding From The Rockefeller Foundation. Rees Left Shortly Afterwards In 1947.After Leaving The Tavistock Rees' First Role Was As The Chief Organizer Of The 1948 International Congress For Mental Health Held In London. At This Congress The World Federation For Mental Health Was Founded And Rees Was Elected As The First President. This Organization Is Now A Non-Governmental Organization With Formal Consultative Status At The United Nations. Rees Retired From His Post In 1962 Though He Continued To Act As A Consultant. As Usual No Finding That Political Leaders And Administrators Would Be Sociopathic Or Psycopathic For Invading Other Lawful Countries Or Attempting To Exterminate Elements Of Their Populations. <br/> <br/> W.
