First Edition thus with 55 fine steel-engraved illustrations two full-page vignettes and head-and tail-pieces in the text some moderate spotting and offsetting as often; most attractively bound in contemporary straight-grain dark green morocco sides with treble frame border in gilt back gilt extra with five raised bands second compartment lettered in gilt all other compartments richly tooled in gilt to an elaborate floral design all edges gilt board edges and doublures ruled in gilt watered rose-pink silk endpapers lightly rubbed at joints else a very nice bright firm copy in well-preserved period binding. Rogers' well-known collection of verse and prose pieces was first published in two separate parts in 1822 and 1828 but despite the work's literary merit publication in parts was a relative failure. A remedy was sought with the appearance of this combined edition including both parts and greatly augmented by a splendid series of engravings from drawings by Stothard and Turner with one each from Batty Prout Titian and Vasari. Care was taken with the engravings varying from full-page to thumbnail in size which are of uniformly high standard; it is no surprise to find that no fewer than thirteen different engravers were employed the list including many of the finest talents of the period: Allen Cooke Davenport Finden Goodall Humphrys Le Keux Lewis Pye Robinson Rolls Smith and Wallis. With the appearance of this edition the situation was not merely rescued but transformed into a runaway success prompting the classic one-liner attributed to Lady Blessington: 'poor Rogers would have been dished without the plates'. Bound in half green calf spine in six compartments separated by raised bands gilt lettering on one burgundy and one brown label in two compartments intricate gilt tooling in remainder gilt borders on covers marbled endpapers. Profusely illustrated with steel engravings after specially commissioned works by J.M.W. Turner and Thomas Stothard. Samuel Rogers 1763-1855 was an English poet during his lifetime one of the most celebrated although his fame has long since been eclipsed by his Romantic colleagues and friends Wordsworth Coleridge and Byron. His recollections of these and other friends such as Charles James Fox are key sources for information about London artistic and literary life with which he was intimate and which he used his wealth to support. He made his money as a banker and was also a discriminating art collector. In 1814 Rogers made a tour on the Continent with his sister Sarah. He travelled through Switzerland to Italy keeping a full diary of events and impressions and had made his way to Naples when the news of Napoleon's escape from Elba obliged him to hurry home. Seven years later he returned to Italy paying a visit to Byron and Shelley at Pisa. Out of the earlier of these tours arose his last and longest work Italy. The first part was published anonymously in 1822; the second with his name attached in 1828. It was at first a failure but Rogers was determined to make it a success. He enlarged and revised the poem and commissioned illustrations from J.M.W. Turner Thomas Stothard and Samuel Prout. These were engraved on steel in the sumptuous edition of 1830. The book then proved a great success and Rogers followed it up with an equally sumptuous edition of his Poems in 1834. Joseph Mallord William Turner RA 1775- 1851 was an English Romantic landscape painter watercolourist and printmaker. Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting. Although renowned for his oil paintings Turner is also one of the greatest masters of British watercolour landscape painting. Turner's "delicate and graceful vignettes which are miracles of fine detail seem fairly to float upon the page . Turner's illustrations for this volume.are if anything superior to those for ITALY" - Ray referring to the uniform edition of Rogers's ITALY published the same year. Thomas Stothard 1755 1834 was an English painter and engraver. In 1778 he became a student of the Royal Academy of which he was elected associate in 1792 and full academician in 1794. In 1812 he was appointed librarian having served as assistant for two years. The designs by Stothard have been estimated by art historian Ralph Nicholson Wornum to number five thousand and of these about three thousand have been engraved. RAY 13NCBEL III:181 . Woodes Rogers C. 1679 - 15 July 1732 Was An English Sea Captain Privateer Slave Trader1 And From 1718 The First Royal Governor Of The Bahamas. His Father Held Shares In Many Ships But He Died When Rogers Was In His Mid-Twenties Leaving Rogers In Control Of The Family Shipping Business. In 1707 Rogers Was Approached By Captain William Dampier Who Sought Support For A Privateering Voyage Against The Spanish With Whom The British Were At War. Rogers Led The Expedition Which Consisted Of Two Well-Armed Ships Duke And Duchess And Was The Captain Of Duke. In Three Years Rogers And His Men Went Around The World Capturing Several Ships In The Pacific Ocean. En Route The Expedition Rescued Selkirk Finding Him On Juan Fernández Island On 1 February 1709. When The Expedition Returned To England In October 1711 Rogers Had Circumnavigated The Globe While Retaining His Original Ships And Most Of His Men And The Investors In The Expedition Doubled Their Money. The Expedition Made Rogers A National Hero But His Brother Was Killed And Rogers Was Badly Wounded In Fights In The Pacific. On His Return He Was Successfully Sued By His Crew On The Grounds That They Had Not Received Their Fair Share Of The Expedition Profits And Rogers Was Forced Into Bankruptcy. He Wrote Of His Maritime Experiences In The Book A Cruising Voyage Round The World Which Sold Well In Part Due To Public Fascination At Selkirk's Rescue. Rogers Was Twice Appointed Governor Of The Bahamas Where He Succeeded In Warding Off Threats From The Spanish And In Ridding The Colony Of Pirates. Howevwer His First Term As Governor Was Financially Ruinous And On His Return To England He Was Imprisoned For Debt. With Both The Government And His Former Partners Refusing To Honour His Debts Rogers Was Released From Debtor's Prison Only When His Creditors Took Pity On Him And Absolved Him Of His Debts. Even So Rogers Wrote That He Was "Perplexed With The Melancholy Prospect Of His Affairs". In 1722 Or 1723 Rogers Was Approached By A Man Writing A History Of Piracy And Supplied Him With Information. The Resulting Work A General History Of The Robberies And Murders Of The Most Notorious Pyrates Published Under The Pseudonym Captain Charles Johnson Was An Enormous Hit On Both Sides Of The Atlantic And Catapulted Rogers For The Second Time To The Status Of A National Hero. With Public Attention Focused On Him Again Rogers Was Successful In 1726 In Petitioning The King For Financial Redress. Not Only Did King George I Grant Him A Pension Retroactive To 1721 But The King's Son And Successor George Ii Reappointed Him As Governor On 22 October 1728. The Bahamas Did Not Come Under External Threat During Rogers' Second Term But The Reappointed Governor Had Difficulties. Still Seeking To Bolster The Island's Defences Rogers Sought Imposition Of A Local Tax. In Recognition Of Her Expertise Nicholson Was Elected To The American Anthropological Association In 1904. In 1924 She Designed A New Building For Her Collections Which Reflective Of Changing Fashions Had Begun To Focus On Asian Art. The Architectural Firm Of Marston Van Pelt & Maybury Worked With Nicholson To Realize Her Vision. Her Design Nicknamed The "Treasure House" Borrowed Elements From Buildings She Had Seen In China. The Building Was Opened As An Art Gallery And Shop In 1925 Although The Interior Garden Courtyard Was Not Completed Until 1929. In 1943 She Donated The Home To Found A Permanent Building For The Pasadena Art Museum Notable For Its Landmark Exhibitions Of Contemporary Art Circa 1958-1975. Paul Rohrbach 1869 -1956 Was Born In The Courland Governate Then Part Of The Russian Empire. Between 1887 And 1896 He Attended The Universities Of Dorpat Berlin And Strasbourg. Rohrbach Traveled Extensively In Asia Especially China And Africa And In 1903-06 He Was Settlement Commissioner To Southwest Africa. After Returning To Berlin He Became A Lecturer Of Colonial Economy At The Handelshochschule Berlin. His Writings Include Many Books On Political Conditions In The Countries Visited By Him With Much Attention To The Effects Of German Colonization And Interests. Rohrbach Was An Unapologetic Racist And A Vocal Supporter Of German Colonial Expansion. He Unequivocally Asserted That Black Societies In Africa Were Racially Incapable Of Creating Advanced Cultures And Sophisticated Political Structures. From This Premise He Concluded That Germans Were Justified In Seizing And Developing 'Underused' Land And Labor In Africa. In Practice He Endorsed Brutal Systems Of Compulsory Labor For Native Africans In Germany's Colonies. He Also Encouraged Colonial Governments To Expropriate Indigenous Lands For Distribution To White Settlers. Rohrbach Considered The African Labor Extremely Valuable To Colonial Economies And Wanted To Preserve Indigenous Populations. However He Recommended That Settlers And Colonial States Freely Employ Violence To Suppress And Deter Native Resistance. He Also Sanctioned Eradicating Rebellious African Tribes. Rohrbach Wrote More Broadly On German Foreign Policy Particularly During The First World War. He Became An Influential Public Voice In Germany's Debate Over War Aims And Contributed Directly To Discussions Over Objectives Within The German Government. Rohrbach Strongly Favored Projecting German Power Into Eastern Europe At The Expense Of The Russian Empire. However He Did Not Believe That Colonial Structures Would Be Appropriate For Governing The Spaces And Populations Of Eastern Europe. Rohrbach Proposed That The German Empire Directly Annex The Russian Governorates Along The Baltic Coast Kovno Vilna Courland Livonia And Estonia And Recommended Using Education And Settlement Policy To Gradually Germanize Their Estonian Latvian Lithuanian And White Ruthenian Populations. He Also Strongly Supported Establishing German Control Over Congress Poland But Believed That The Political And Cultural Sophistication Of The Polish Nation Effectively Prohibited Annexation And Germanization. He Instead Supported The Creation Of An Autonomous Polish State Which Would Govern Its Own Domestic Affairs But Accept The German Empire's Direction Of A Common Foreign Policy And Military Affairs. The German Empire Pursued This Imperial Policy In 1916 When It Established The Kingdom Of Poland. According To Antranig Chalabian Paul Rohrbach And Artashes Abeghian Published A Book In 1934 Called 'Armenian-Aryan' In Collaboration With Nazi Intellectuals Which "Strove To Prove That Armenians Belong To The Aryan Race And The Armenian Language To The Indo-European Family Of Languages."
