‎1912 - 1929 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A GILDED AGE FEMME FATALE‎

‎BOULDER COLORADO CHICAGO ILLINOIS EUGENE OREGON. Very Good. 1912. On offer is the original handwritten manuscript diary of a young woman named of Retta Craighead sometimes identified in the press as Craghead. The diary covers her life during the years of 1912 to 1929 from the time she was about 16 or 17 until she was 33 or 34. One hundred pages of entries in this 7" x 9" book make for a detailed telling of this fascinating woman's life and along with the handwritten entries Retta has peppered the pages with newspaper clippings revealing that Retta is socially active and in a family whose every bridge game soiree slumber party at Neva Brandyberry's fundraiser and ribbon-cutting ceremony is printed in the local Boulder newspaper. Even when she travels to a friend's home in another state the doings are press fodder. But from happy-go-lucky teenager she enters womanhood disappointed and angry. She will not be returning to her beloved friends at school her Father insists she tells us. No warning and she is instead doomed to be a teacher which she detests. This diary has so many levels. The reader learns that the girl becomes a woman and a 'femme fatale' at that; Retta is engaged two times but never seems to get married to any of the young men she talks about. There is also a hint of a scandalous affair with a married man. Then all of a sudden in 1921 she says she's been married now 4 years but says there are things she wishes she could say but doesn't. Towards the end of the diary we do not find any mention of Hugh the man she married save for his leaving. Sadly her heart gets broken many times but she never leaves out her heartfelt feelings and always expresses her deepest emotions. This is a rare peek into the heart and soul of a young Colorado woman during the Gilded Era this is a diary heartache and heartbreak. The other wonderful facet of this intriguing diary is that our diarist is an exceptional writer and besides using the diary as a confidant and catalogue of her emotional life we see Retta write super passages about the city of Chicago which is a city much in her life of those years. Additionally as our author is from Boulder Colorado and the details about her life there are also quite simply super. Lastly she spends time attending school in Eugene at the University of Oregon although her entries while in Eugene are brief. She does not write daily and some times Retta skips a month and in the later years she skips a few years but she jams the pages full with detail. Blithely when she does miss and then starts anew she calls it "A New Leaf." Here are snippets: 1912 'February 23rd Left school at 4 and had dinner at Mrs. P.'s then got my dress and met Ruth and went to Friday Musical club meeting. Then came home and took my dress and showed it to Agnes. Then had an early supper. Then hurried trying to get roses made for my hair then finally got dressed and Clint took me to the Sophomore German dance and O dear had the grandest time. It was awfully crowed. Got home about 2. Had such a time on the car it was so awfully crowded." A newspaper clipping places the party at Sternberg Hall. 1913 "June 25th I have not been keeping this diary but tomorrow I'm going to Chicago. I'm 20 years old and engaged to be married. Father has bought us a new car and we sure do enjoy it. Billy came over home from Lupton but we are so busy packing. Bill came up and took me to town and then had dinner. Then Ethel and I went to town and met him and we went and bot the tickets. Billy and I went to the house and to got the car and then he took me to Helen Lowter's reception. Billy and I took a long ride out in the country….she then goes on to say…I forgot to record the farewell scene so I will proceed to do it on this page. After said ride with dad and mama Billy and I strolled out on the second terrace to the summer house and sat down. Heaving a sigh that tore off 7 shingles. Then a heart rendering silence. At last Billy very sadly announced that he'd try to have the shingles on ere I return. There being nothing else to say we fell on each others neck and wept tears of brimey sorrow and parted. Billy promised to write every three hours." "June 26th We left Boulder at 6:45. Mother and father took us to the station. Billy stayed in Boulder so we 3 went to Brighton to catch the Chicago Train…." "June 27th Still very hot but arrived in Chicago at 4:30 and got up to Y.W. C.A. without much trouble. Registered and had supper then a bath and then to bed." "June 29th Breakfast at 8 and then I laid down on the bed and slept until 11. We intended to go to church. Then we dressed for dinner. After dinner wrote a letter then we met a woman who goes with us so we went to Jackson Park and saw sail boats and people swimming in Michigan Lake. There is a lagoon and the prettiest bridges across it. Not kept very well. We did not go thru the Field's building a building Fields bot after the World's Fair 20 years a go and just parts of the displays in Chicago to his museum. We had ice cream in the Ill building. They are not pretty. Came back to the Y.W…." "July 1st Got up and had to hurry so fast to get to breakfast then Mrs. Hood and I went to the business part of the city and shopped all morning. Came back to Y.W. for luncheon then at 2:30 went down and crossed the Van Buren Viaduct and over to the Olympian games. They are nothing more than just plain track meets. Then came back to Y.W. Saw suffrage parade practiced a while then dinner and then wrote home letters and went to P.O. for a walk. Came back and sat in the hall window and saw the boats on the lake. They are so pretty." She then talks about enrolling at Chicago Music College. "July 5th Went on the Christopher Columbus to Milwaukee. Left Chicago at 9:45. The boat was rather crowed but Oh! so grand on the water which was blue green and all different shades. It was so pretty. Got to Milwaukee at 3 p.m. Then we went to Palm Garden and had dinner. They were so slow we just had time to get back to the boat which left at 5 p.m. Coming back the sunset was so pretty. The sun looked like a big ball of fire and made such a pretty sunset and so many pretty clouds. The boat had lunch and café' rooms and we could see land on one side but on the other side just water and beautiful waves. My first boat trip I shall never forget it." "July 8th Practiced all morning…….Went to go to dinner to "King Joy Lo" A fountain in the center of the first floor with gold fish and clear water. The tables were inlaid with ivory with a dark material. We ate on the first balcony tables just for two. Had chop suey. There was music through the entire evening and Japanese men as managers and waiters. They just seemed to bring things out of the wall. I couldn't figure out where the kitchen was. Then from there we went to the ______hotel. Oh it was grand. They had the ladies waiting room on the 2nd floor and lounge chairs and everything in soft velvety red. I sat down at the writing desk and wrote some cards. Then we went to the P.O. and from there to a Hippodrome it was quite funny we laughed……" At this point in the diary she gives an extensive description 2 ½ pages long of her trip to Wabash County; Evanston Wilmette and Kenilworth. She mentions North Western University the Home of Francis Willard and so much more. There is also a Garrick Theatre Program pasted to the pages. "July 24th Practiced all morning and read in the afternoon then went to the city. Then after dinner we went to Groves then we walked down to the lake. Oh! so beautiful. There is something so inspiring about the water and as it came in the waves rushed and made such a little rumbling sound so dear. I love it; don't believe I'd ever tire of the lake. Then we went back to the house and they served us refreshments. Then Dr. and Jessie brought us home. We passed P_____ Palmer house a big millionaire's home. Also a different part of the famous Sheridan road and right close to the lake. Oh it was such a beautiful clear day in the morning. I looked over the lake for the longest time. The pretty green and blue shades and way off there is a lighthouse and the lighthouses can't be seen most days. In the evening when we were coming home we passed apartment houses that rent for $100." She also goes into the Blackstone hotel and describes that and has pasted an envelope from the hotel to the pages of her diary. There is mention of the Field's & Company store The Tiffany room Moody's Church etc. She takes a trip to Niagara Falls and Toronto and describes that trip also in detail. Finally towards the end of her stay in Chicago she takes another trip to Decatur to visit and stay with a friend. "August 5th Getting ready for the party. It was a grand success. Then went to the picture show with the bunch." There are several newspaper clipping attached to this page that talk all about the party on this day one of them says; "It was a very congenial circle of eighteen girl friends whom Miss Neva Brandyberry invited to her home yesterday afternoon to meet her friend Miss Retta Craighead of Boulder Colo. The girls brought their sewing and while some busied themselves with their needles others played and sang. The time passed all too swiftly until 6 o'clock when a two course luncheon was provided. Ferns and the pungent nasturtium were used in the room decorations." "August 18th Got up early and packed my suit case and dressed then went downstairs and Gerladine was quite sick. The Dr. came while I was eating and said "Scarlet Fever" and for me to skip if I didn't want to be put in quarantine but Mr. Pax never took me to the train at 8 and was so lonesome. Got to Wolscott at 11 and went to hotel and ate dinner. Got to Chicago at 5 and went to Y.W.C.A." "August 21st Got up at 5 dressed and at 6 took a car to Union station. Bought my ticket then Harry came and we had breakfast and I left for Portland at 7. Such a dirty time. Got there at 11 and cousin Molly met me and we arrived at her home at 1. Oh hungry as a bear. We had fried chicken then after dinner I slept awhile. She has a Negro mammy and Oh! I how funny and strange I felt when the negros came around me. We sat out on the ground after supper then at 9 some relatives came and that made it a little bit more exciting." She mentions that she is very worried that she has Scarlet fever. She was pretty good writing most days during this year but the entries stop on September 6th and with that the next page goes on to say; "A NEW LEAF 1915 February 2nd I am now in Eugene Oregon going to the university." She talks of being pledged into the sorority dances studies etc. "Well this June and all April and May have been such wonderful months. Prentiss asked me if I'd marry him and yes Oh! such a wonderful night and such a wonderful man. June 5th Sunday I went to church with Mrs. Brown and Catherine Riddle. We met Prentiss coming from town. He called right after lunch and we went up to Henderson Park and there in a quiet shady place he put on a diamond ring. Got back to the house about 4 and told the girls and Oh! such fun. Oh! so romantic. Each one kissed me. Oh! I love the girls so dear…." 1916 "ANOTHER NEW LEAF Sept. 1st Came to Canon City Colorado to teach school Music and English. Went home for Thanksgiving and Christmas." "February 7th The most disappointment I have ever had in my life. Father just refused to let me go back to school. Have cried all night. I am just sick. Never wanted anything so much in all my life before. Edith went back and Prentiss graduates. Oh! I just know I'll never get over this. Oh! I want to go so much think of all the good times. Moved to the Miller Hotel and it is a little lovelier then at Mr. Warners. But oh if I could only go I despise teaching. I hate. I thought surely father would say yes…." "March 6th Oh I just hate life. If I could just be and I believe I'd be happy. Oh! I hate teaching and school. I want to go back to Eugene for commencement. I just know I just can't and Oh! I just hate this old world. It is so cruel. These last months have been just almost been unbearable. It just wish I could die. Was never so unhappy in my life…." "April 19th A letter from Prentiss and I received the blow that would kill at first but as the hours wore on I began to think I could stand it. He wrote rudely and bold that I do not love you and a lot of other cruel things. I intend to return the ring. Oh it seemed as tho my heart would break away. I immediately wrote and told Stewart I didn't care for him and never would." There is a newspaper clipping around this time in the diary of the marriage between Prentiss Brown and Ida Mae Humphrey. Looks like the two had a "quiet wedding" in Corvallis. The clipping states that it was a "surprise to everyone." Retta then talks about climbing up Flag Staff going to Rockvale Glacier climbing etc. She seems so unhappy for quite some time and still wishes to go back to Eugene and mentions Berkley. She skips her entries from May-December and just has brief sporadic entries for the year 1917. There is also several pages full of newspaper clipping having to do with Retta and her family general news about the outings they took. This is when years are skipped and the next year represented is 1921. "April 29th Went to grand opera in Denver. Had a most wonderful time. Thrilled most to pieces. Loghengrin. Risa Rosa the leading lady. It was wonderful. Caught the last car home." "May 10th Married 4 years. H. Hugh gave me a dozen rose buds. To bed early. Hugh went some where else. Dear little book I wish I dared write a few things here but no. My heart is heavy often times. That's all." "July 5th A big celebration in Boulder and it was raining so hard in camp we broke camp and come down about noon. After dinner and a good bath we went to a movie. H. Mollie Linette and Clint……" "Dear little book such a busy summer so happy and yet sad. H. has gone and guess left July 18th." 1922 "April 16th Things are in such a horrid mess. Easter night a heavy heart and sad. Hugh is gone been gone since July." "September 13th School. Still cold. Went home and started for the country to get Jenkins and John. We played thru the cucumber fields then he took me to dinner then to a movie. He is awfully nice and I wish he were worth millions and millions. He is so honest and good and I hope he isn't so sick. He is lots of fun to play with and I could almost love him but I won't I won't. My dear old pal but oh! where are we going. I love him." "October 12th Went to the library tried to fight out my big battle and I know I'm a fool not to give it up but love is queer and I believe I'd be bigger to stay here than to runaway. Walk along way and tried to fight it out. I care but why should I the world's big but one." "November 1st This is a hectic fall. I just can't seem to get a hold on myself. I'm so unhappy but know it is the best. I am glad that I'm big enough to give up the man I really love and have loved all this time. It is wrong to love him I wonder how long I'll have to fight it out. It can't last always. The mornings are not so bad but the evenings and nights seem so hard to be brave. It is harder then last fall." Speculation: is she in love with a married man There are sporadic entries for 1923 and then all of a sudden Retta picks back up in 1929. The last eight pages are devoted to a trip they take to the East coast visiting Newport Providence Cliff Beach staying at the Breakers Hotel Rye Beach etc. Also towards the end of the diary she spends a lot of time driving into Denver to take unspecified "treatments". It seems like a lot has been quoted but it's only the tip of the iceberg. The cover on this diary is very rough but the pages are all attached to the binding and look clean. ‎PIETERSBURG SOUTH AFRICA 1902. On offer is an informative Boer War era manuscript 4 page autograph letter signed ALS dated Pietersburg South Africa Aug. 22 1902 handwritten by Reverend C.E.C. Lillingstone a clergyman serving the troops detailing his activities and duties: ".the work here is very fascinating. One Regt. Wilts has left us but we still have nearly 1000 troops here. Lately I have been playing cricket a good deal." Talks about his various cricket games. "I miss the Wilys men very much. There were some very keen Christians amongst them. You would be amused to see our 'tea & bun canteen' at work each night. The men buy up the buns very quickly. The last night the Wilts were here we sold 46 doz. in 1/2 an hour. ‎Sebastopol Sonoma Redwood City California. Very Good. 1901. Interesting turn of the century California diaries penned by Reverend Charles C. Kirtland. 1901 1903 and 1908 are present and a careful reading provides many interesting insights into the Reverend and the religious politics of the west coast. In 1901 Mr. Kirtland has tipped in a small number of newspaper clippings detailing his surprise resignation at the beginning of June and he proudly asserts on September 8th - "My first Sunday as pastor of the Sonoma Church morning text 1 Cor 3:9 evening text Matt 25:16." Only a week later - "Morning text 2 Sam 3:28 This was a memorial service in memory of our late martyred president McKinley. The pulpit was tastefully draped in black and a large flag." He returns to Sebastopol the following week to aid in further Memorial services for the President. Other snippets: "The subject of our prayer meeting: What Can I do for My Pastor attendance 8." Pretty disappointing I'll bet as the annual Church meeting convenes with 57 people!. The Reverend while not writing every day rarely fails to mention his sermons and the text he reads. He is fond of missionary sermons. Refers to seeing Booker T. Washington at the Mechanic Pavilion: "He could not make himself heard in the rear of the building. He is undoubtably the greatest man of his race a practical leader of his people." "A social was given in the church parlors - in spite of rain about 80 attended. Music and a farce by way of entertainment after which the young people played games." "Mrs. Dr. Rich who gave birth to a son last night is very low and not expected to live. Tonight's report a little better." Sadly as so often the case in these pioneering times the son died a few months later but Mrs. Rich survivied. "Little Jennie Hewgett who has been sick for about 10 weeks died this morning. She was a sweet child. 10 years old a member of our Sunday School." "Began a new testament study of the religion of Jesus - only idea is begin with the study of his earliest writings." Mr. Kirtland was also a man used to using his hands and feet. The diaries discuss vacations; one climbing Mt. Shasta always fishing hiking and packing up horses with provisions to head for camp. There is also a fair bit of contact from other preachers and reverends inviting Kirtland to preach in their churches this leads to Kirtland writing others to cover his pulpit. This archive will be a treasure trove for area historians and genealogists - there are hundreds of local names mentioned as to births deaths and marriages. ‎ALLENSTOWN NEW HAMPSHIRE. Good. 1896. On offer is a detailed and quite fascinating diary written in the late 19th Century New England. The diary measures 6 inches by 3 1/2 inches and contains 365 pages. They are 100% complete. The leather-bound volume is in good condition and all pages are intact. The handwriting is legible. Henry Harrison Hartwell was born in Hillborough NH in 1819 and lived until 1913. He had a varied career but was best known as a well-respected minister in the Methodist Church. He served as a minister for 35 years in and around Allenstown and Suncook NH. He also served in several public offices most notably as Justice of the Peace Tax Collector and Superintendent of Schools. Following a breakdown of health he went out west to recuperate. Returning in four years he established an auction and commission merchant business in Allenstown. This diary dates from his time as a merchant. He is seventy seven at the time it was written. It is filled with the details and minutiae of operating a commission business: ". Bought of Mrs. Newdon 1 bedstead - $2.00 5 Chairs - $1.00 Bought Wm. 1 bedstead $0.25 Paid Osgood 1 bag meal - $0.80 J.W. Pipen work on windows in block - $1.00 . " Jan 13 1896. ". Bought of Widow Woman in "Old Pass House" 1 Cook Stove 1 Table 2 bedsteads 2 mattresses 2 sheep pelts 4 new chairs 2 R chairs 3 chairs 1 toilet table - total $7.05. Wood saw saw horse iron pail - $1.00 Total $8.05" Apr 17 1896. His diary is replete with such entries. It is evident that his business is active; He also mentions tasks around his home such as digging potatoes and picking apples. He notes municipal political events: "This is again the " Town Meeting " day. Good day. Good weather. Good travelling. And the Election has gone better to my liking than last year. FE Blodgett Wm D and Charles S Cleveland are Selectmen. CS Baker and John Hayes are "Road Agents". All Americans" Mar 10 1896. In the 'Miscellaneous' section of his diary he reflects on the year 1896 just finished and notes: ". we feel many and great have been the blessings of our heavenly father as experienced and enjoyed by us ." The very next line of the entry states simply ". our youngest son Edward F Hartwell died in Suncook June 15th . " A copy of the obituary is taped into the diary. This is a treasure trove of detailing commercial information and transactions in rural New England at the end of the 19th century. The book paints a very complete picture of the life and times of this honoured religious figure and beloved family man all the while with the back drop of international events and the impending War. The Reverend begins the large well filled 11 x 8 inch 300 page book noting the book was a Christmas Day gift from his grandson Jack which is plenty of motivation for him to keep up with his writings. His inspiration obviously works as the book will please any historian or collector of the history and background of Rhode Island at the time as the writings are given the further depth of being littered with clippings notes and photographs. ‎1845 Manuscript Letter Extract Likely from American Missionary Josiah Peabody on the State of Turkey's Attempts to Battle Russia Following Destruction of the Turkish Fleets‎

On offer is an original manuscript extract handwritten dated Erzurum Turkey Mar. 3 1854 it is believed to be in the hand of Rev. Josiah Peabody 1807-1873. Peabody served under the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions A. B. C. F. M. . He and his wife Mary Lawrence Herbert Peabody 1817-1899 lived in Turkey for his missionary work from 1941-1955 see BIO NOTES at the end of the listing. The writings are a superb relic of the times; what historians and collectors of Turkish-Russian relations era will recognize as pivotal being only mere months after Russia destroyed Turkey's fleet and this note reports the Turks' struggle to gain any advantage the handwriting describes: "As to the war everything is still dark. Immense efforts are made by the Turks in this region and hopes are entertained that they may be able to withstand the Russians especially as they have a number of European officers…"The letter also includes content regarding some of the new officers the Sultan and further analysis of Turkey's chances against Russia. While unsigned this extract was found amongst the letters sent by his wife Mary L. H. Peabody to her brother Rev. Charles D. Herbert 1818- in Missouri. Timelines and genealogical records indicate that this letter extract can be confidently attributed to Josiah. Condition: Handwritten on 7.5 x 5.5 inch scrap of paper. Overall VG. BIO NOTES: Reverend Josiah Peabody 1807-1873 was born in Topsfield Mass. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1936 and Andover Theological Seminary in 1840. In March 1841 he married Mary Lawrence Herbert 1817-1899 of Ellsworth Maine. About a month after their wedding Peabody and his bride sailed to Smyrna on route to Ezroum Turkey for his missionary work under the direction of A. B. C. F. M. He served in Turkey until his transfer to Constantinople in 1855. The Peabodys returned to the USA in 1860. They had three children that survived beyond infancy: Mary Charlotte Anne Lucy and Josiah Charles. Mary Lawrence Herbert 1817-1899 and Charles D. Herbert 1818-1893 were born to George Herbert 1778-1820 and Charlotte Tuttle 1782-1869. They were two of six children born to George and Charlotte. George Herbert was educated at Dartmouth and became a well-known lawyer in Ellsworth Maine sometimes referred to as the first lawyer in Ellsworth. Reverend Charles D. Herbert was the youngest son of the family. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1841 and from Bangor Theological Seminary in 1843. Following a few years doing home missionary work "in the west" he became the pastor of the West Newbury Church in Mass. He married and had two sons George Herbert and Rev. C. E. ‎CHAMBERSBURG PENNSYLVANIA PENN PA. Good. 1929. On offer is an original grouping of four 4 manuscript diaries dated 1929 through 1931 handwritten by Reverend John C Stuff and Isabelle Gish later Stuff written during a period when John was in seminary and Isabelle was working in Chambersburg PA. Historians and researchers interested in the development and growth of a young man seeking a life in Christian outreach with all the passions doubts and difficulties that occur with youth and young love will find a unique treasure trove having a pair of diaries from both sides of the relationship. With great charm we initially read a card at the front of one diary: "Each time you record life's happenings here will you think of someone else who is recording her events Let us strive to make each day better. Your devoted fiancee Isabelle". John has written that they were engaged on April 6 1928 formally announced the engagement at Thanksgiving and spent their first Christmas together in spirit and truth as an engaged couple. While the diaries are interesting on a number of levels the story of their increasing love and subsequent marriage are really the stars here. John writes: "I took Isabelle to the Chb'g train this PM. It is hard to watch the train pull out but thro the lingering last smile and the sparkle of the eye is the hope that cannot be lost but lives til the train brings her again to me. I resolve to read more and take Sem. life more conscientiously. I resolve to stand on my own feet self confident and courage equal to all others. To try to be more helpful and make my dearest happier." John's diary is fascinating reading as he considers his religious training in light of the real world around him and expresses his interest in some of the new religious developments such as the writings of Rutherford and Russel Jehovah's Witnesses and "this interesting age and life of Industrialism and Science." John's diaries unlike many more mundane diaries of clerical types are a study of real humanity as he struggles with the balance between his calling and his culture and the difficulties of life in modern times. Here is a snippet: "Mother William and I left for State College this AM at 7:00. Car wasn't working. Arrived 11:00 AM Will was registered and boarding at Criterion Club. I'm sure he will like it and get much from it. We came back thru Dry Run stopped at Esther's for 6:30 dinner. I was hungry and tired. Home about 10 pm. Esther and Jacob seem to be very happy. Probably a good thing that she was tired of teaching before marriage. That valley surely has its moral problems." "Tried to sleep this AM but couldn't. Got an interesting reaction from Isabelle. Today I don't see why she read the meaning into it that she did. We are both too sensitive and too easily upset by things which don't apply to us. Saw "Hallelujah" this pm I was a bit disappointed with the picture of negro life. Worked tonight again. Good radioing but getting very cold." "Left at 8:30 for Sem again. Arrived here. The pages are firmly attached but the front cover and spine are starting to separate from the binding. However the book is in very good condition for its age and is solid. The diary is very full of writing and extra things are glued in on some pages. Diary 2 is a small National diary for 1929 used by John. It is very full and the writing is very easy to read. Diary 3 is a personalized Day by Day diary used by John with a lock on the strap that holds the diary closed. It is very full and is in excellent condition. John's name is embossed on the cover. Diary 4 is a Wanamaker diary for 1931 used by Isabelle. It is not as full as the other diaries. It was used almost daily until mid May after which it is blank. The letter measures 9 x 7-1/4 inches two pages. Autograph letter signed dated Draycot September 26th 1833. A couple of letters ink smudged otherwise very good condition. Letter to unnamed correspondent. Extending an invitation to visit and noting that the "picture framer at Newcastle . Had seen a proof of Sir Walter before the letters some time ago." The author of this letter is possibly Rev. Robert Ker Porter of Draycott-in-the-Moors in Staffordshire. The Heath House mentioned in this letter is also located in Staffordshire. Rev. Robert Ker Porter was born in Haigh Wigan Lancs. 1774 ; son of William Porter ; educated Man. Gr. Sch. 12th June 1787 ; Mat. Brasenose Coll. ‎Baltimore Maryland MD - at Sea Aboard the Charles 1843. On offer are two 2 super original manuscript relics of Christian outreach and missionary work handwritten by Reverend Walter Gunn one of the first missionaries to India addressed to Frederick Schott of Waterloo New York. Bio notes follow. The first is a one 1 page letter written by Gunn dated 1843 while in Baltimore. The second letter is written by Rev. Gunn while on the boat "The Charles" heading to India in 1844. He has been at sea for 138 days. This is a 3¼ page letter. Here are snippets: 1 "Baltimore May 24 1843 Dear Brother in the Lord I should like to write a long letter to you and enter into many particulars but I have but only a few moments to spare as Bro Selmser is soon to leave B. and I have a press of business on hand. Well how do you do. How is your family and how do your souls prosper. Is Christ precious are you actively engaged in his service. O my brother watch your heart your words and your actions and strive to live so that the flame of love may burn brightly in your heart to God. How pleasant it would be for me to enjoy the hospitalities of your table again to bow with you again around the family altar to walk to the house of God in company but instead of walking the street of Waterloo I shall soon be walking the deck of the vessel that bears me to the heathen land. But shall I ever forget you and the beloved brethren of W. No. Even now while going from house to house among the brethren in imagination the tears fall upon the paper and bedew these lines I write….Your brother in Christ Walter Gunn." 2 "Ship Charles Indian Ocean March 25th 1844 Dear Brother Shutt While penning these lines I am sailing up the Indian Ocean towards the shores of Hindustan. I have crossed the equator twice doubled the Cape of Good Hope and shall in a few weeks I trust reach my field of labor. But though I am separated from you by a distance of so many thousand miles I have not forgotten you no in imagination I often walk the streets of Waterloo visit the houses of the brethren and join in your acts of worship in the congregation. The different articles of apparel that I wear at this moment remind me of you and many others in W. While contemplating the interesting scenes that transpire in your place one year ago my eyes often fill with tears. Were not those precious and heavenly seasons when you and so many of your associates and friends took a stand on the Lord's side. Though I am now denied the privilege of witnessing such glorious displays of the power and grace of God in the conviction and conversion of sinners I do not on that account conclude that I am out of the path of duty. True it would be a pleasing task for the minister of Christ to be engaged daily in the work of directing the inquiring to the Savior and strengthening those who had just commenced running the Christian course. But that privilege at present is denied me. From no one for the last few months have I heard the inquiry "What must I do to be saved." Except the missionaries who are going with me to the heathen. I am surrounded by those who seem to think but little of their undying souls….You will undoubtedly wish to know how I feel now that I am so far away from kindred friends and natives land with but little prospect of ever seeing them again. To answer for the most part I feel cheerful contented and happy. Often have I seen the ocean all lashed into commotion the vessel at one moment raised upon the top of a mighty billow and the next plunged into the fearful chasm below; at such a moment it seemed as though we must all be engulfed beneath the troubled ocean but even then my mind has been calm and unruffled….Tell your sister Mrs. Bean that the pantaloons she made me became very spotted by the damp weather around the Cape of Good Hope but that the spots did not make them any the less comfortable. Tell Jackson that I hope and pray that he may become a minister. Tell Mrs. Mayer that my wife often speaks of her and the pleasant time that they spent together in Johnstown and Whitesboro. Tomorrow or next day we expect that our vessel will anchor in the harbor of Amherst in Burmah. One hundred and thirty eight days I have been tossed upon the billows of the ocean without setting my feet on land and many more anxious days will pass before I reach Guntur the field of my labor. Pray for me and my companion that we may be preserved from the temptations to which we are exposed and that we may be the faithful servants of Christ among the heathen. Yours in the bonds of Christian love Walter Gunn. Near the shores of Burmah April 3rd 1844." BIO NOTES: "The Rev. W. Gunn. The Missionary was a graduate of Union College N.Y. in 1841; studied theology at Gettysburg; was ordained by the Hartwick Synod in 1843 at Johnstown; appointed missionary to India in the same year; arrived at Guntur on June 18th 1844 and was a faithful and an indefatigable colleague of the Rev. Mr. Heyer until 1851 when after a period of seven years service in the cause of Jesus he departed this life at Guntur esteemed and loved by all who knew him. He is spoken of as a good man full of zeal for the Lord so much so that on one occasion in the Guntur bazaar he became so indignant at some idolatrous performances of the heathen that he lifted up his voice in great earnest against the idolaters who became exasperated at him and consequently proceeded to pelt him with stones. But he prudently withdrew from the enraged rabble only to return on subsequent occasions to continue publishing the message of salvation to them. His remains rest in the Guntur Cemetery until the day of the resurrection. He died while in Guntur in 1851 from Tuberculosis." "Reverend Adam Long went to India almost immediately after being ordained. The Lutheran mission to India was still in its early phases when Long arrived it have been started in the Andhra region by Rev. John Christian Frederick Heyer in 1842 who at 48 and widowed was an anomaly compared to other missionaries. He was joined by the Rev. and Mrs. Water Gunn another Gettysburg College and Seminary graduate in 1844 and by Rev. George Martz in 1849. There these men and Gunn's wife Lorena began the task of educating and converting Indians. In a country that is dominated by the polytheistic Hinduism and Mohammedanism this was not an easy task. Traveling from village to village these men and women counted their accomplishments by the individuals that they could convert and the schools and churches that they built. .
