Weber Leipzig 1869 14.50 x 23 cm relié Inscribed copy concealing the secret truth of Wagner's thwarted love story Second edition with parts previously unpublished with a new preface ""An Constantin Frantz"" dated April 28 1868 Tribschen bei Luzern. The first edition was published by the same publisher in 1852. Full burgundy morocco binding spine with five raised bands gilt date at foot marbled endpapers and pastedowns gilt turn-ins original first softcover preserved top edge gilt gilt leading edges. Some foxing more pronounced on some leaves a small restoration to the upper right-hand corner on pages IX-XIV not affecting the text pencil annotation on pages 116 and 139 skillful restorations to head and foot of the upper joint. Exceptionally and intimately signed and inscribed by Richard Wagner to a mysterious dedicatee:« Hierbei sollst du meiner gedenken denn alles habe ich ernstlich gemeint. R. W. » At this you shall remember me for I have meant everything seriously. This moving autograph confession with its highly personal tone written on the most important of his theoretical writings radically differs from the hasty ""Zur Erinnerung"" written by the composer on his opera scores or the little notes he used to hand out to patrons after concerts. We did not find any other inscribed copies of Oper und Drama' on the market or in public institutions. However the composer's autobiography and correspondence reveal the existence of two dedications on this major work. The first was addressed to Theodor Uhlig on the original manuscript with an autograph inscription inspired by Goethe. The second and only other inscription mentioned in a letter from Wagner is said to have been made for Malwida von Meysenbug on the same edition as our copy. Although it is not impossible this could be the very same inscription written on the ""book of all books on music"" according to Richard Strauss the style and content of the inscribed words allow for an even more prestigious attribution. A ""VERY SOLID"" MANIFESTO In February 1851 Wagner completed Oper und Drama. This ""very solid book"" - as described in a letter to Franz Liszt - sets out the revolutionary principles of Leitmotiv and Gesamtkunstwerk political and aesthetic utopia of a musical drama acting as a synthesis of the Arts. The text is part of his Zürcher Kunstschriften three seminal essays written during his Swiss exile along with Kunstwerk der Zukunft' and Die Kunst und die Revolution'. He outlines in his treatises the shape of his future scenic festival"" - the celebrated Ring and includes his reflections on the relationship between art and society as well as his theories on the future of opera. In 1868 he decided to complete the composition of this monumental tetralogy and simultaneously worked on the second edition of Oper und Drama' published at the end of 1868 - mistakenly stated on the cover as 1869. In the end it differed from the previous edition only in its new preface the very few changes proving once more the permanence of his musical and artistic vision almost twenty years after it was first written. Wagner will tirelessly defend and promote his ideas which found their ultimate achievement during the 1876 Bayreuth festival. This second corrected edition with a revised preface is an integral part of the artist's creative process giving his reflections the status of a political and musical manifesto as evidenced by the intimate and enigmatic dedication on our copy. The importance of this work in the eyes of the composer the absence of any explicit attribution to the inscription's recipient the use of the familiar form of address and the content of the message confirm the importance of the dedicatee and his place within the author's inner circle. Ephemera is in good to very good condition with several pieces glued to front endpapers of the book and the remainder loose. Book is 989 pages 9.75" tall. Ephemera includes Formula for Making Self-Adjusting Splints: A Surgical Desideratum with Richmond's notes in margin a published list of physicians of the city of Dover NH agreeing to adhere to a Tariff of Prices adopted at the regular meeting of the Dover Medical Association September 2 1879 price list included and fee tables adopted by the Dover Medical Society in 1899 and 1917 all affixed to front endpapers. Loose papers include a card advertising a YMCA men's meeting; an advertising card from Otis Clapp & Son of Boston promoting its Malt and Cod-Liver Oil Compound; an advertising card for F. W. Buckley exclusive maker of the Buckley Shirts Oneonta NY; a brochure advertising Frederick Stearns & Company's Wine of Cod Liver Oil with Peptonate of Iron Detroit Michigan; Richmond's handwritten instructions for attending a sprained ankle with sketch; two pages of Richmond's handwritten notes on treating heart conditions with herbal medicines; Richmond's handwritten notes on treating prolapsus ani of children that defies other treatment; notes on treating a fractured ankle with sketch; two pages of notes on treating dislocation of the shoulder with sketch; notes on testing for albumin; notes on testing for effusion into the knee joint; a list of foods to be taken for an unspecified condition; formula for treatment of unspecified condition "one drop gives instant relief; and a patient statement from 1895. Richmond practiced general medicine in Dover New Hampshire during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Jean Paul" a much-admired and much-maligned German writer of the Romantic period whose prolific output included such novels as "The Invisible Lodge" 1793 "Hesperus" 1795 "Siebenkäs" 1796-97 "Titan" 1800-03 "The Awkward Age" 1804-05 and many others. ALS in German 1p 6¼" X 8" Hof in Vorgtland Germany 13 December 1789. Addressed to in translation "Highly honored and respected Sir." Very good. Mounting traces along left edge verso only. An unusually early example boldly penned in dark brown ink during a period when he was living with his mother and tutoring children in a nearby village; his pseudonymously-published poorly-received "Selections from the Devil's Papers" was published earlier this same year. In this letter he writes an unnamed publisher that in translation "I take the liberty to send you the beginning of a manuscript and beg you to give me your opinion as to its probable acceptance or rejection at your earliest convenience. I have the honor to sign myself with the greatest respect." Boldly signed "J.P.F. Richter." Richter's next book "The Invisible Lodge" wasn't published until 1793 and parts of it such as "Life of the Cheerful Schoolmaster Maria Wutz" are believed to have been written in 1790 so it's quite possible that he was submitting some other portion of "The Invisible Lodge" with this query. Very Good. 5 printed documents published by the Manufacturers' Association of Delaware County Pennsylvania in 1875 1876 and 1877. #1: 20 x 13 cm. Announcement of a meeting of the Manufacturers of Delaware County to be held on Nov. 20 1875 "to obtain relief from the burdensome and unequal taxation suffered" by those manufacturers. By order of Samuel Riddle president of the group. Pencil notations on the back headed "Riddle mill burned." #2-3: 26 x 21 cm. Printed notice dated Nov. 29 1875 from a committee of Manufacturers of Delaware County urging individual manufacturers to explain to their county assessor "the great depreciation in the value of machinery since the last triennial assessment." The committee are Amos Gartside James Stephens and Abram Blakeley. Includes a list of assessors of Delaware County for 1876. There are 2 copies of this one with an ink note reading: "Jno. R. Rhodes." #4: 21 x 13 cm. Printed letter dated May 6 1876 from William Ward "Acting for Committee of Delaware County Manufacturers." Ward who represented Pennsylvania in Congress from 1877 to 1883 requests the recipient to have the "enclosed memorial" signed by all employees "both male and female" to be used during the debate on the Morrison Free Trade Bill. #5: 21 x 25 cm. Printed letter dated Jan. 29 1877 from Amos Gartside and James Stephens on behalf of the Committee of Delaware County Manufacturers. To manufacturers urging them to talk to the county assessors in their districts about the burden put on Delaware County manufacturers by the "unfair and unequal valuation and taxation of machinery." Very scarce. In Very Good Condition: all are lightly creased; closed 2-cm. tear from edgeof #1; several closed tears of less than 1 cm. from edges; minor loss near upper edge of #1; slight discoloration on #5. In very good condtion with rubbing bookplate of Walter Sondheim to the front pastedown. Rare autograph letter signed by the author tipped in. Octavo one page on Riis's personal stationary signed by Riis and dated Oct 1903. In near fine condition with mail folds. Also tipped in is a magazine article on Riis by Lincoln Steffens. Jacob August Riis was a Danish-American social reformer "muck-raking" journalist and social documentary photographer. He contributed significantly to the cause of urban reform in the United States of America at the turn of the twentieth century by revealing the poor living conditions of the impoverished to the middle and upper classes. While living in New York Riis himself experienced poverty and became a police reporter to write about the quality of life in the slums.
