1958 Personal Letter from Conservative UK Prime Minister Robert Anthony Eden Regarding His Response to the Suez Crisis

On offer is a typewritten and hand signed letter marked 'personal' from Robert Anthony Eden 1897-1977 1st Earl of Avon and former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom to John Edwin Hunt of New Zealand. Eden writes this letter on Donhead House Shaftesbury blind embossed letterhead Robert Anthony Eden lived at Donhead House for a year following the Suez Crisis of 1956. Dated July 31st 1958. Marked PERSONAL. Eden writes to Hunt with appreciation for a letter Hunt had previously sent to him. Context indicates that Hunt had been complementary regarding Eden's perspective on the Suez Crisis. Eden then comments on the Suez Crisis of 1956: I was quite sure that in time the purpose I had in mind would be understood. My only regret now is that the two years which have elapsed have made the task a very difficult one for the free world. BIO NOTES: Robert Anthony Eden 1st Earl of Avon was an English Conservative politician who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1955 to 1957. He was also Foreign Secretary for three periods between 1935 and 1955 including during World War II. He is best known for his outspoken opposition to appeasement in the 1930s; his diplomatic leadership in the 1940s and 1950s; and the failure of his Middle East policy in 1956 that ended his premiership. Suez in retrospect: Following the defeat of the Arab armies by Israel in the Six Day War of 1967 Eden's own reputation not least in Israel and the United States soared and he was deluged with letters of the "you were right in 1956" variety. In 1986 Eden's official biographer Robert Rhodes James re-evaluated sympathetically Eden's stance over Suez and in 1990 following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait James asked: "Who can now claim that Eden was wrong". Such arguments turn mostly on whether as a matter of policy the Suez operation was fundamentally flawed or whether as such "revisionists" thought the lack of American support conveyed the impression that the West was divided and weak. Anthony Nutting who resigned as a Foreign Office Minister over Suez expressed the former view in 1967 the year of the Arab-Israeli Six-Day War when he wrote that "we had sown the wind of bitterness and we were to reap the whirlwind of revenge and rebellion". Conversely D. R. Thorpe another of Eden's biographers suggests that had the Suez venture succeeded "there would almost certainly have been no Middle East war in 1967 and probably no Yom Kippur War in 1973 also". On offer is a super original manuscript relic of late 19th Century secret societies and fraternal organizations being an 1893 - 1895 IMPROVED ORDER OF RED MEN TRIBES Minutes Book. The book proper published specifically for the Club has printed forms for the IMPROVED ORDER OF RED MEN TRIBES. Pages on the left side of the open ledger have a Printed Heading with space for filling in information by hand. The page heading reads: "HUNTING GROUNDS OF" "WIGWAM OF" "TRIBE NO" "IMP. O.R.M." "SLEEP" and "MOON G.S.D.4" then below the heading information is printed information for the TRIBE to record Minutes Activities Events the INITIATION OF NEW MEMBERS etc. Includes such titles as: "Keeper of Wampum" "Application of Paleface" "Record of Previous Council Fire read" "Twig box was opened by" "New Business" "Council Fire was then Quenched" etc. Almost all pages are filled in with various handwritten minutes and notes about the REDMEN meetings including dates 1893-1895 place Croton-on-Hudson New York events New Member Induction Bill needing Payment Committee Reports Problem members General Problems Plans Political Stands etc. Pinned-on to one of the pages is a 2 page handwritten letter on "Improved Order of Red Men Wigwam of Kitchawau Tribe No. 237" letterhead. We cannot help but note that this book and the Society it represents predates the Washington Redskins baseball team controversy declaring the team name racist yet this fraternal organization clearly honors Native Americans and stands as an homage to their tribal attributes. Please read the Wiki article after the description. The ledger is also a treasure trove of genealogical and social history of the Westchester County area with many many names of members and their activities. The book has a leather spine and corners leather edged with gilt paper title label on front cover 8.5" x 13.5" pages printed on watermarked paper "Kenilworth" approximately 200-300 unnumbered pages. The front cover is split at its spine fold and is almost disbound. Internally a couple signatures including the first are shaky; one page is loose and is pinned-on to another page otherwise the pages are quite nice - tight bright and clean with writing that is clear and fully legible. HISTORICAL NOTES: Wiki: The Improved Order of Red Men traces its origin to certain secret patriotic societies founded before the American Revolution. This pamphlet consists of a review of the 16 complaints filed by anti-colonialist activists and militants of European origin and mostly communist who were arrested detained and then tortured by French soldiers. These complaints name the torturers and specify their techniques while evoking the death of Djeghri Omar known as Simon following the abuse inflicted upon him. This booklet concludes with a collective letter sent to the highest French judicial authorities and signed by 11 female and male prisoners of Algiers civil prison recounting the violence experienced by Janine Belkhodja Chafika Meslem Eliane Gautheron Fatima Benosman Zahia Orif Denise Walbert Khene and Nelly Forget. The latter were incarcerated in the so-called ""progressive Christians"" affair between February and March 1957 with certain soldiers primarily targeting the Social Centers created by Germaine Tillion to help the slum dwellers of Algiers. Lucien Vogel éditeur Paris Mars 1920 24 x 37 cm une feuille Original double color print printed on laid paper signed at bottom right of the plate. Original engraving created for the illustration of La Gazette du bon ton one of the most beautiful and influential fashion magazines of the 20th century celebrating the talent of French creators and artists in the full bloom of Art Deco. Famous fashion magazine founded in 1912 by Lucien Vogel La Gazette du bon ton was published until 1925 with an interruption during the War from 1915 to 1920 due to the mobilization of its editor-in-chief. It consists of 69 issues printed in only 2000 copies and is illustrated notably with 573 color plates and 148 sketches representing models by great couturiers. From their publication these luxurious publications “ addressed bibliophiles and worldly aesthetes ” Françoise Tétart-Vittu “ La Gazette du bon ton ” in Dictionnaire de la mode 2016. Printed on fine laid paper they use a typeface specially created for the magazine by Georges Peignot the Cochin character adopted in 1946 by Christian Dior. The prints are created using the metal stencil technique heightened in colors and some highlighted in gold or palladium. The adventure begins in 1912 when Lucien Vogel a man of society and fashion - he had already participated in the magazine Femina - decides to found with his wife Cosette de Brunhoff sister of Jean the father of Babar the Gazette du bon ton whose subtitle was then “ Art modes et frivolités ”. Georges Charensol reports the words of the editor-in-chief : “ In 1910 he observes there existed no fashion journal truly artistic and representative of the spirit of its time. I was therefore thinking of making a luxury magazine with truly modern artists . I was certain of success because for fashion no country can rival France. ” “ Un grand éditeur d'art. Lucien Vogel ” in Les Nouvelles littéraires n°133 May 1925. The magazine's success is immediate not only in France but also in the United States and South America. Originally Vogel thus assembled a group of seven artists : André-Édouard Marty and Pierre Brissaud followed by Georges Lepape and Dammicourt ; and finally his friends from the École des beaux-arts who are George Barbier Bernard Boutet de Monvel or Charles Martin. Other talents quickly join the team : Guy Arnoux Léon Bakst Benito Boutet de Monvel Umberto Brunelleschi Chas Laborde Jean-Gabriel Domergue Raoul Dufy Édouard Halouze Alexandre Iacovleff Jean Émile Laboureur Charles Loupot Charles Martin Maggie Salcedo. These artists mostly unknown when Lucien Vogel calls upon them will later become emblematic and sought-after artistic figures. These same illustrators create the drawings for the Gazette's advertisements. The plates highlight and sublimate the dresses of seven creators of the time : Lanvin Doeuillet Paquin Poiret Worth Vionnet and Doucet. The couturiers provide exclusive models for each issue. Nevertheless some of the illustrations feature no real model but only the idea that the illustrator has of the fashion of the day. La Gazette du bon ton is a decisive stage in the history of fashion. Combining aesthetic demands and visual unity it brings together for the first time the great talents of the worlds of arts letters and fashion and imposes through this alchemy a completely new image of woman slender independent and bold also carried by the new generation of couturiers Coco Chanel Jean Patou Marcel Rochas. An original print used to illustrate the Gazette du bon ton one of the most attractive and influential 20th century fashion magazines featuring the talents of French artists and other contributors from the burgeoning Art Deco movement. A celebrated fashion magazine established in 1912 by Lucien Vogel La Gazette du bon ton appeared until 1925 with a hiatus from 1915 to 1920 due to the war the editor-in-chief having been called up for service. It consisted of 69 issues printed in only 2000 copies each and notably illustrated with 573 color plates and 148 sketches of the models of the great designers. Right from the start this sumptuous publication was aimed at bibliophiles and fashionable society Françoise Tétart-Vittu La Gazette du bon ton in Dictionnaire de la mode 2016 and was printed on fine vergé paper using a type cut specially for the magazine by Georges Peignot known as Cochin later used in 1946 by Christian Dior. The prints were made using stencils heightened in colors some highlighted in gold or palladium. The story began in 1912 when Lucien Vogel a man of the world involved in fashion he had already been part of the fashion magazine Femina decided with his wife Cosette de Brunhoff the sister of Jean creator of Babar to set up the Gazette du bon ton subtitled at the time: Art fashion frivolities. Georges Charensol noted the reasoning of the editor-in-chief: 'In 1910' he observed there was no really artistic fashion magazine nothing representative of the spirit of the time. My dream was therefore to make a luxury magazine with truly modern artists
I was assured of success because when it comes to fashion no country on earth can compete with France.' Un grand éditeur d'art. Lucien Vogel in Les Nouvelles littéraires no. 133 May 1925. The magazine was immediately successful not only in France but also in the United States and Latin America. At first Vogel put together a team of seven artists: André-Édouard Marty and Pierre Brissaud followed by Georges Lepape and Dammicourt as well as eventually his friends from school and the School of Fine Arts like George Barbier Bernard Boutet de Monvel and Charles Martin. Other talented people soon came flocking to join the team: Guy Arnoux Léon Bakst Benito Boutet de Monvel Umberto Brunelleschi Chas Laborde Jean-Gabriel Domergue Raoul Dufy Édouard Halouze Alexandre Iacovleff Jean Émile Laboureur Charles Loupot Chalres Martin Maggie Salcedo. These artist mostly unknown when Lucien Vogel sought them out later became emblematic and sought-after artistic figures. It was also they who worked on the advertising drawings for the Gazette. The plates put the spotlight on and celebrate dresses by seven designers of the age: Lanvin Doeuillet Paquin Poiret Worth Vionnet and Doucet. The designers provided exclusive models for each issue. Nonetheless some of the illustrations are not based on real models but simply on the illustrator's conception of the fashion of the day. The Gazette du bon ton was an important step in the history of fashion. Combining aesthetic demands with the physical whole it brought together for the first time the great talents of the artistic literary and fashion worlds; and imposed through this alchemy a completely new image of women: slender independent and daring which was shared by the new generation of designers including Coco Chanel Jean Patou Marcel Rochas and so on
Taken over in 1920 by Condé Montrose Nast the Gazette du bon ton was an important influence on the new layout and aesthetics of that little dying paper that Nast had bought a few years earlier: Vogue. Lucien Vogel éditeur unknown

Good. 1918. On offer is a super original 1918 World War I manuscript diary handwritten by United States Navy sailor Robert C. Savage N.N.V. National Naval Volunteer as inscribed on the cover of the USS South Dakota ACR-9. Robert does a super job as a diarist having added great depth to his memoir by tucking in 100 real photographs of ships ship life and the many Ports of Call plus adding further depth are a number of tipped in ephemeral pieces that go right to the heart of this sailor's soul. While this diary does an excellent job of giving a deck hand's perspective of life and service aboard the South Dakota Robert shows an enthusiasm for the ship and his service not always seen among the 'lower' decks; the journal begins we believe on the 437th day of his service in the Navy as he runs a dual number system on the pages of the lined book he has used. Along with the many many dozens of original photos he has tipped in; some of his family back home as a reminder but many more of his mates ship and other ships and more there are two official 1917 performance reports tipped in with his own comments on the distance covered; a super typed four paragraph sheet tipped in titled 'Why didn't you wait to be drafted' which addresses the question of volunteerism versus those conscripted and there is some obvious disdain for the draftees; handwritten lists of ships in convoys colliers submarine torpedo boats detailing the 6 trips the South Dakota makes from June 23 1918 leaving New York until November 18 1918 but there iss a heading for Nov 19 1918 Day 585 but the space is left blank and the rest of the book is photos or data. Likely Robert stopped telling the story of his service upon the news the war was over.Here is his final entry which reveals the man: 'Still out on the range tonight we had night firing with the searchlight playing on the target the shells fired had the tracers on them and it sure was a pretty sight to see them tearing their way thru the air light a ball of fire No news about when we will leave the old SD yet.' ALLENTOWN PENNSYLVANIA USS TENNESSEE. Good. 1936. On offer is the four year handwritten diary and ephemera of Robert Carl Schuster. He maintained this original manuscript diary during his service in the US NAVY from 1936-1940. He served as a radio operator aboard the USS Tennessee BB-43 which would a year later be bombed during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Historians or collectors of the pre-World War II period will delight in the diary's depth and the fact that it covers the complete period of this young man's enlistment. It begins on January 1 1936 just prior to his enlistment at 18 years-old and contains an entry every day until Jan 29 1940 a week following his honorable discharge from the Navy. This is a total 1470 entries on 182 double sided pages. As a separate but very interesting for the right collection are the autographs from the 1938 World Series Champions the New York Yankees found inside. On Feburary 13 1938 several of the New York Yankees toured his ship while it was in port and Schuster had two of them Don Heffner and Hall of Famer "Red" Ruffing sign his diary. This must have been quite an event for Schuster as he was a big fan of baseball often going to games and listening to ball games on the radio. Schuster does a super job of detailing his life aboard the ship his training duties and efforts to get promotions. Here are some snippets: Jan 11 1937: "Anchored at Long Beach Received letter from Hann Hoffman Lucille Neider and Ginnie. Was very glad to hear from all of them. Had to do an extra hour duty for loosing my gas mask." Jan 12 1937: "Anchored at Long Beach started sterilizing today. One of the ship planes took a nose dive while trying to take off. Wings damaged." Feb 2 1938: "Still underway. A terrible tragedy took place during a battle.this evening. Two big Navy bombers crashed in midair each carrying a crew of seven. 11 died and the other three are recovering." April 6 1938: "Underway- torpedo and submarine attack in morning. Had 0730 till 1200 RF watch also 2000 till 2400." June 11 1937: "Arrived at San Francisco. Ship ran aground while entering port. Had tugs and Cost Guard cutters trying all day and till after midnight to pull her loose. Not succeeding. Went to bed at 8:30pm." On June 12 1937 they finally decide to remove all the amunition lading and fuel to lighten the ship. With the additional weight removed they manage to free the ship. Aug 20 1938: "Captain's Inspection. Went to San Diego over weekend. Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Schuber also Pauline Conrad. Got there at 1800. Went to Naval Carnival. Won three baskets of groceries. Saw movie stars in person Fred Bartholomew and Mickey Rooney." Feb 21 1939: "Encountered enemy today. Sank seven of their heavy Cruisers. Had condition watch all day. Went to bed early. Had 1645 to 2000 CRE watch. Darkened ship at sunset." April 28 1939: "Quarters for muster at 0900. Manned rail at 0930. Rendering honors to Prince and Princess of Norway. Fired 21 gun salute. In evening took bath and went to bed early." The Prince also inspected the ship on May 2 1930. Sept 30 1939: "Anchored at Long Beach. Received letter from sister which I answered. Had change of command Bat Division two all hands aft. Personal inspection was caught with dirty stripes on collar for the first time on ship." Schuster also makes entries regarding the rise and fall of his many romances. Hundreds of entries record dates shore leave to meet girls over nights blind dates and love letters with girls who he meets or receives letters from. The three main girls in the diary are Belle Dorothy and Mary. June 3 1938: "Field day- Captain's inspection of lower decks. Went ashore in afternoon to see Mary. Jimmy could not go. Took Mary and Jim's girlfriend to movies. Missed last bus out of LA. Got back to ship at 0515. Like Mary very much. Beginning to think I am falling in love." July 16 1938: ".studied a little in the afternoon. Having Dorthy on my mind which prevents me from studying more. I love you." There is an unusual series of entries regarding an un named event: Jan 5 1936: "Was at home in afternoon Fran Steiner Raymond Scheonly Minevra Wagner Lucila Neider Annabelle Dustin and I went to dance down at Green Lantern. On way home upset with car. No body hurt got home at 4:00am." For some reason while routine this event stood out for him as each year following he recalls the anniversary of that night. Jan 5 1937: ".note what happened today a year ago." Jan 5 1938: ".two years ago today." Schuster served on the USS Tennessee in both oceans. He details service from Puget Sound WA a number of bases in California Pearl Harbor HI the Canal Zone Puerto Rico Guantanamo Bay Cuba Florida to the Hudson River NY. While he was discharged in 1940 his service record shows that he re-enlisted with the Navy shortly after on board the USS George Clymer. 1898 Rare Letters about the Fate of a Hamilton Ontario Asylum Patient

Fascinating pair of vintage Canadian letters written by Robert Christie Inspector of Asylums and Prisons for the province of Ontario regarding the case and fate of David C. Browning a patient in the Hamilton Asylum. The letters are addressed to Messrs Wright & Brown Solicitors of Carlisle England. The first letter is dated May 30 1898. It is a typed carbon copy of a letter that had been sent and presumed lost and thus sent again. It details financial arrangements for the maintenance of Browning. I received your letter of the 14th January last with enclosures also yours of May 10th last. Upon receipt of the former I transferred the case to the Toronto General Trust Co as my Agents May 30 1898. The second letter dated September 23 1898 is a follow-up to the first. It confirms the contents of the first letter suggesting the original had gone astray. In it Christie hints at his responsibilities: I may say that in consequence of the volume of business under my charge as statutory committee of the persons and estates of all lunatics September 23 1898. Ontario businessman and political figure Robert Christie was born in 1826 and passed away in 1914. As a businessman he was active in the financial and insurance industries. He served as vice-president of the Canadian Mutual Fire Insurance Company and was a director of the Canada West Farmers Mutual and Stock Insurance Company. He entered politics and served in the first Ontario Legislature when Canada was established as an independent country. At his death he was the last surviving member of that first legislature. He was named Inspector of Asylums and Prisons when he left politics. 1944 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A 21 YEAR OLD CATHOLIC SEMINARIAN INTIMATELY SHARING HIS HIGHS AND LOWS AND TURMOIL OF STUDYING FOR THE PRIESTHOOD
near BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS MONTREAL QUEBEC CANADA. Poor. 1944. On offer is an amazing original 1944 manuscript diary handwritten by Robert Connelly a 21 year old man studying to be a priest. He is studying at a seminary near Boston Massachusetts and twice during the year he travels to La Grande Seminary in Montreal where he takes courses. Robert does an exceptional job using a 5 year diary for the one year only of writing almost every day and filling the pages up with his thoughts feelings and observations of the life of a young seminarian. Historians and researchers of the subject will be hard pressed to find a more detailed or intimate sharing of the inner thoughts and turmoil this young man experiences. A sensitive fellow he writes in the first entry: "This new diary is black by choice because the World is in a sad mournful state. Let us pray next year is the dawn of peace here". Here are some other snippets of this super memoir: "Fatigue and dreariness is slowly wearing on the fellows here. It is externally apparent. It is one of the trials for later life that the Seminary prepares us for". "Sulplician or the ___ Dietian knowledge is very poor. We had some chunk of battered beef today and not many fellows ate it. Result - we got it back for supper only it looked worse. The beans at dinner smelt like somebody "threw up". As Joachin says "double-eaten". "We got mush brown for supper again tonight and we are drawing near the end. I am trying to finish my review before that tense feeling sets in". "Bob D---- and Johnnie Gagnor our classmates from last year who had to be led to the decision with spiritual aid - that the priesthood is not for them. Bob left St Mary's Seminary last week. Visited us here today. We had a little party in B Poulins room last night. O My we broke the rules. Well God understands - even if the good Sulps don't". Fr Connelly wrote often about the War. He also wrote about Stalin and Communism and how necessary to was to pray for the conversion of Russia. I got the impression that he may have had some mixed feelings about not being in the army: "Read letter from Driscoll today. He told me to keep working hard because they know in the Armed Forces our grind is not so easy either". "The rumors about our being drafted are very numerous. Perhaps Pete C---- caused them after coming back from the States". "We went on a promenade today and in the spring weather - all the bums are out on the sidewalk again. Even the anti-clericals. One fellow asked Joe Connelly - "When are you going to sign up in the army" - Joe - "I am thinking of it - if any of your business". The author wrote almost 3 pages describing a visit he and his Brothers made to St Jean de-Dieu a large asylum in Montreal. Following is a small part of what he wrote about patients he saw there: Aug 16. "We are going to take the trip to the St John Dieu -a 12000 inmate asylum for mental cases in Montreal. The nuns at this asylum like most other sisters are hardworking diligent little women unselfish and persevering in their work patience personified. Would that we clerics and religious Brothers could imitate them completely". Aug17. "Sick cases seen at St J 1. Women's Ward - One case was screaming terribly and would soon be shifted. The nuns had both tubs with cold water for those who were depressed and hot for those who were too wild. 2. The imbecile on the Piazza standing scratched her ___ then laid down head rolling from side to side blank expression on face". He goes on to describe several other of the patients he saw along with the mentally retarded children. The author included in the diary many stories told to him by other brothers and priests. Two of these: "This particular call happened to a Springfield Priest: A victim of a bus accident was taken to the hospital dead. Crushed to nothing arms broke off etc. The priest arrived at the hospital quickly after receiving an urgent telephone call. He was shown the victim and prepared to give him the last sacraments. The victim was placed in a basket which held all the broken members of his body. An orderly of the hospital was standing nearby. The priest motioned to him "Come here and give me a hand will you" The fellow came over and picked an arm of the victim out of the basket!!!" "Berstain was speaking of a former priest - a friend of his who used to be very chaste and solid in priestly countenance. But since he was a good mixer with youth he used to give rides in his auto - girls and boys. But then his love fell on one of the girls in particular - not spiritual but sentimental love of heart. Eventually he was driving her home from her war job in the factory and would stay there about an hour. Sometimes he went to see her in the morning after Mass!!! There is much more to this diary. The author reflected on Catholic doctrine - birth control pre-marital sex celibacy and more. He also wrote of mixed marriage the negro problem education duties of a priest. He noted the election of Cardinal Cushing and wrote of Bishop Sheen. The author was a very thoughtful and perceptive young man. His personal reflections on people and situations he encountered are throughout the diary. When he traveled he noted his thoughts about the scenes he saw and people he observed in the diary: "One girl got on the bus - was married - husband in the S. Pacific. Was the type who made a good housewife. Seemed to know the bus driver and his wife good". "The drunken Indiana farmer who got on - looked like he used to be a hardworking humble man. He laughed at his own jokes. "Pretty good heh Hah hah". "Some Jehovah's or Salvationists were preaching in the park. Would that we Catholics had their courage. The preachers spoke of belief in Christ.Soldiers stood at attention while two girls and fellows just kept making passes at each other". He wrote of his family and of a brother who was in the army. There is a letter in the diary from his mother who wrote news about "Bill" who was a pilot that had been shot down. It sounded as though Bill was a brother or very close relative. The diary measures about 6"X4 1/2" and is in very rough shape. The covers are detached the spine covering is gone. Pages are about to separate. Written in ink his handwriting at times is difficult to read especially names. Included with the diary are the letter a religious card a receipt from Greyhound and a receipt from Northeast Airlines all from the 1940s.
