I do hope that in time the quiet for which our good city was once so celebrated may return and that her denizens may give a thought and a line to those whose hearts are at home tho' their persons are away. Seriously how are you And how is your worthy chum Horn And all our other good men and true The newspapers you sent me were duly received and read with pleasure especially the one containing a notice of our staid 6th street friend William to whom be all honor and glory legal and aquitable. sic As I have by "my preliminary observations" as the orators & ministers say pretty directly called on you for some news you may reasonably expect me to impart some which I should be more happy to do if I had any but having none I must excuse myself by propounding the problem of take nothing from nothing and what remains The answer will give you all the news which so far as this place is concerned is the return of the President & Heads of Department and the various subs connected therewith who had been so fortunate as to have the means and the permission to absent themselves for a summer excursion from this city of magnificent distances dust dems and blue devils. All hands are now I believe pretty generally hard at it preparing for the approaching session. Milliners - store keepers- and hack drivers are making their preparations to reap their annual harvest from the crowd of loafers sharpers gulls politicians legislators office hunters and people of all kinds & descriptions who congregate here during the winter from motives of curiosity business pleasure or dissipation. It would be really worth your while to spend a month or two here in the midst of the season to a man of observation thought and reflection it affords a rare treat. One I am sure you would understand and appreciate tho' I doubt whether you would much enjoy it. Looking merely at the surface it affords an intoxicating sort of pleasure but penetrating too deeply into its mysteries and becoming intimate with it the feeling produced is rather that of disgust and contempt for the sort of human nature that it portrays. Had not my paper run out and my tea bell rung I fear you would have been inflicted with a fit of moralizing brought about by a rainy afternoon and a little self exercise of the "serious second thought" of a poor public officer one of a class which from all accounts don't much indulge in that very necessary exercise of the mental faculty." <br /><br /></p>

Page 177 has a two inch diagonal tear at the upper right corner of the page. This is a well loved volume that was later rebound in a fine leather binding. A precious illustrated Spanish edition of this classic treatise on evangelical perfection through spiritual exercises Combattimento spirituale The spiritual combat with engravings by Martin Engelbrecht. This work is commonly attributed to Juan de Castaniza who is here identified in the preface. Castaniza a Benedictine monk of Ona active in Italy was known for his chronicles of the life of P. Rivadeneyra and St. Romuald. The work was written by the Italian father Lorenzo Scupoli however and translated shortly after its appearance by Castaniza into Spanish. Combate espiritual in this pocket-sized and compact duodecimo format is a handbook of devotional exercises presented in sixty-six chapters modeled after Loyola's famous text. It aims at perfecting the soul through prayer meditation and examination of the conscience. It is thus a guide for the conquest of the spirit over unruly passions the senses and conscious acts offering a method for self-regulation leading to virtue and salvation. Indeed it prescribes the imitation of Christ's life through empathic contemplation on the Passion assisted by the text and images. The stirring devotional image of the Crucifixion engraved by Engelbrecht 1684-1756 depicts the cross as the fountain of life "apud me est fons vitae"; Christ's blood pours into the cups of his disciples who stand at his feet. The engraving is appropriate for the work a visual experience provoking empathy for Christ through inward meditation and complete sensitization through reflection on the image. The frontispiece also by Engelbrecht depicts Christ as the exemplar of complete virtue. An unsigned engraving of St. Francis de Sales 1567-1622 accompanies a short elegy by this great ascetic bishop of Geneva who endorsed in his spiritual teachings the mortification of the senses will and mind for the sake of perfection. The more simple depiction of St. Francis de Sales is likely produced by a different engraver as Engelbrecht's compositions are here characterized by fully-modeled figures and atmospheric effects through the use of fine linework. Engelbrecht was the brother of Christian Engelbrecht 1672-1735. These well-known printsellers and engravers were dominant figures in Augsburg at this time and are remembered for their portrait studies and their landscape religious and allegorical illustrations. Martin is also noted for his engravings used in perspective boxes or peepshows. Scupoli's work makes its first appearance in the Italian in Venice in 1589. By the mid- seventeenth century this very popular devotional work was frequently republished in German and Latin. There are no traces of the first Spanish edition which must have appeared shortly after the Italian edition. This present illustrated edition a late Spanish translation of this important work reproduces the text as it originally appeared in Castaniza's translation. All Spanish translations of this text remain very rare. This popular meditative manual produced in this small format for a large and pious public instructively suggests the ways in which its readers responded to the text and images. It is an early publication from the press of Schilgen printer to the university of Vienna. A nice copy of this very important and scarce devotional work in Spanish. 1918 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT WORLD WAR I OFFICER TRAINING JOURNAL HANDWRITTEN BY THE LONG TIME FRIEND OF WARREN BUFFET AND DIRECTOR OF BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY WHO WOULD LATER PROVE BUFFET WRONG
Good. 1918. On offer is a very interesting manuscript relic of WWI with a unique connection and association to American investor of renown Warren Buffet and his company Berkshire Hathaway being a handwritten notebook on trench warfare compiled by Seabury Stanton in March and April of 1918. Seabury Stanton would later be a Director of Berkshire Hathaway until he was fired by Warren Buffet during a confrontation over the tender offer price of the company's stock which resulted in taking over Berkshire Hathaway in 1964. Seabury Stanton figures prominently in the history of the Berkshire Hathaway Company and was a 50 year employee of the company when he left the company in 1964. Accounts vary as to whether he was fired or quit but he had been the director when Buffet gained controlling interest and was forced out during the takeover. This is Seabury Stanton's original handwritten notebook from his officer training during the First World War. This notebook has about 85 pages copiously inscribed with handwritten notes concerning all aspects of trench warfare in 1918 including Poison Gas Machine Guns Construction of Trenches and Warfare of Position Grenades Raids and Patrols and more. The notebook includes a few drawings interspersed within the handwritten text. About half the pages are left blank. Stanton noted the name of the instructor and the date for each of about a dozen lessons with each lesson being several pages of handwritten notes. The first page is inscribed Seabury Stanton 1st Inf. Co. O.T.C. BIO NOTES: One online source provides: Berkshire Hathaway traces its roots to a textile manufacturing company established by Oliver Chace in 1839 as the Valley Falls Company in Valley Falls Rhode Island. Chace had previously worked for Samuel Slater the founder of the first successful textile mill in America. Chace founded his first textile mill in 1806. In 1929 the Valley Falls Company merged with the Berkshire Cotton Manufacturing Company established in 1889 in Adams Massachusetts. The combined company was known as Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates. In 1955 Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates merged with the Hathaway Manufacturing Company which was founded in 1888 in New Bedford Massachusetts by Horatio Hathaway. Hathaway was successful in its first decades but it suffered during a general decline in the textile industry after World War I. At this time Hathaway was run by Seabury Stanton whose investment efforts were rewarded with renewed profitability after the Depression. After the merger Berkshire Hathaway had 15 plants employing over 12000 workers with over $120 million in revenue and was headquartered in New Bedford Massachusetts. However seven of those locations were closed by the end of the decade accompanied by large layoffs. In 1962 Warren Buffett began buying stock in Berkshire Hathaway after noticing a pattern in the price direction of its stock whenever the company closed a mill. Eventually Buffett acknowledged that the textile business was waning and company's financial situation was not going to improve. In 1964 Stanton made a verbal tender offer of $1112 per share for the company to buy back Buffett's shares. Buffett agreed to the deal. A few weeks later Buffett received the tender offer in writing but the tender offer was for only $1138. Buffett later admitted that this lower undercutting offer made him angry. Instead of selling at the slightly lower price Buffett decided to buy more of the stock to take control of the company and fire Stanton which he did. However this put Buffett in situation where he was now majority owner of a textile business that was failing. In 2010 Buffett claimed that purchasing Berkshire Hathaway was the biggest investment mistake he had ever made and claimed that it had denied him compounded investment returns of about $200 billion over the previous 45 years. Buffett claimed that had he invested that money directly in insurance businesses instead of buying out Berkshire Hathaway due to what he perceived as a slight by an individual those investments would have paid off several hundredfold. Buffett initially maintained Berkshire's core business of textiles but by 1967 he was expanding into the insurance industry and other investments. Berkshire first ventured into the insurance business with the purchase of National Indemnity Company. In the late 1970s Berkshire acquired an equity stake in the Government Employees Insurance Company GEICO which forms the core of its insurance operations today and is a major source of capital for Berkshire Hathaway's other investments. In 1985 the last textile operations Hathaway's historic core were shut down.
