Both volumes are signed in ink by the author Charles Truman and inscribed to two friends. There is also a slight touch of moisture to the light green endpapers front and back of volume 1 which has bled onto the half title-page edge and last index pages see photos. Otherwise completely clean throughout. The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection of Gold Boxes is one of the world's most comprehensive collections of gold boxes. There are over 140 examples including 54 boxes made in Paris during the eighteenth and early nineteeth centuries. Illustrated throughout in color with 494 color plates in volume 1. Washington D.C May 8 1945. Large three-colored broadside of Harry Truman’s Proclamation declaring the surrender of Germany boldly signed by Harry S. Truman. Also included at the lower left is the original 1945 Christmas card from the President and Mrs. Truman and at lower right the original red white and blue ribbon. These were presented by the President as gifts for friends. Uncommon especially with the original Christmas card and ribbon. Matted and framed which measures 21 inches by 28 inches. "On the day before Hitlers suicide all German troops in Italy laid down their arms. On May 4th German forces in Holland Denmark and northwest Germany surrendered to British Field Marshall Montgomery. On the 6th Donitz authorized General Alfred Jodl to conclude an armistice agreement with General Eisenhower. The Germans wanted a separate peace with the allied troops in the West in order to continue their battle with the Russians in the East. Eisenhower would have none of it. He ordered the Germans to surrender unconditionally the next day. The Germans acquiesced signing the surrender document on May 7th The cessation of fighting took effect at 11:01 P.M. on May 8th" Georges Blond. unknown

Imperial octavo eight volumes original publisher's cloth with gilt titles to the spine frontispieces. Presentation copy inscribed by President Truman in the fifth volume 1949 on the half-title page "Kindest regards to Georgia & Andy Gray from Harry S. Truman 3-2-65." The recipient Georgia Neese Clark Gray 1898-1995 was the first woman to hold the office of the Treasurer of the United States. Gray was active in the state Democratic Party and was elected Democratic National Committee member from Kansas in 1936 a position she held until 1964. She was an articulate and well-liked representative of the party and an early supporter of Harry S. Truman. It was this support that brought about her nomination as the first woman to be Treasurer of the United States a post she held from 1949 to 1953. In fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Housed in the original cardboard shipping boxes with each box sealed except for volume five 1949 and volume eight 1952-1953. After serving as a United States Senator from Missouri 1935–45 and briefly as Vice President 1945 Harry S. Truman succeeded to the presidency on April 12 1945 upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Germany surrendered on Truman's 61st birthday just a few weeks after he assumed the presidency but the war with Imperial Japan raged on and was expected to last at least another year. Truman approved the use of atomic bombs to end the fighting and to spare the millions of American and Japanese lives that would inevitably be lost in the planned invasion of Japan and Japanese-held islands in the Pacific. Although this decision and the numerous issues that arose as a result of it remain the subject of debate to this day it was one of the principal factors that forced Japan's unconditional surrender. Truman presided over an unexpected surge in economic prosperity as America sought readjustment after long years of depression and war. His presidency was a turning point in foreign affairs as the United States engaged in an internationalist foreign policy and renounced isolationism. Truman helped found the United Nations in 1945 issued the Truman Doctrine in 1947 to contain Communism and got the $13 billion Marshall Plan enacted to rebuild Western Europe. His political coalition was based on the white South labor unions farmers ethnic groups and traditional Democrats across the North. Truman was able to rally these groups of supporters during the 1948 presidential election and win a surprise victory that secured a presidential term in his own right. After a number of new masters and four children later she escaped her last servitude shortly before the mandated New York State emancipation took effect on July 4 1827. “I did not run off for I thought that wicked but I walked off believing that to be all right.†In 1843 she renamed herself “Truth†for God and “Sojourner†because she intended to “travel up and down the land†preaching and testifying. RARE. The first edition of this iconic book was 1914 and the second edition two years later in 1916. The title page to our copy is definitely that of the first edition - it has the misprint 'Illustraions' and no English date; whereas in the second edition the date appears and the misprint is corrected. Our copy has 109 plates which is definitely correct for the second edition; however the only copy of the first edition online is that of Jerry Stanoff's Rare Oriental Book Company which states 101 plates - now is his copy lacking or is our own copy a mixture of editions ! I can find no copy of the first edition in a library so I can't corroborate this at the moment. "Isuke Tsuboi 1843-1925 a man who devoted himself to the research of bamboo for nearly forty years and was known as "Japans foremost bamboo guru". In 1881 he set up a farm to experiment with bamboo planting. Over the many years of his hard work Tsuboi accumulated fruitful knowledge in bamboo species and their phytogeographic patterns. He also developed efficient planting methods identified the causes of withering and discovered efficient ways to fight against pests. During his years of research Tsuboi made frequent trips between Taiwan China and Japan which demonstrate the seriousness and diligence with which he pursued the study of bamboo. He was the first man to build a bamboo specimen garden in Japan a place that displayed his categorization of all native bamboo species in Japan. Botanists directors of bamboo groves and bamboo lovers of his time all came to marvel at the richness of his collection. Sadly after Tsuboi passed away the garden was abandoned and then vanished in disrepair. Tsubois Illustrations of the Japanese Species of Bamboo stands as one of the great achievements of his research. The book depicts various species and morphology of bamboo and contains intricate sketches of their inner parts. Even by todays standard this book still retains great value as a reference guide.". There were 5 auctions: Part 1 March 10 1879 vi 306pp; Part 2 March 22 1880 xiv 200pp; Part 3 April 4 1881xi 179pp; Part 4 November 15 1886 xi 254pp; Part 5 April 18 1893 viii 159pp 80 page Index 46 pages of prices realized. The cataloguer was apparently James Hammond Trumbull 1821-1897 since his name appears on the spine of each original volume also because he is credited in the Library of Congress catalogue. The comprehensive index first published in 1893 was compiled by William Isaac Fletcher 1844-1917. The auctions were conducted by George Leavitt parts 1-4 and C. F. Libbie part 5. In this reprint the 5 parts Index are consolidated into 2 HARDCOVER volumes.
