‎2002 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN JOURNAL OF AN ANGRY PASSIONATE MAN RAILING AGAINST HIS 1ST WIFE HIS FAILED RELATIONSHIPS AND HIS MISERABLE LIFE IN LONG DIARY ENTRIES AND ORIGINAL POETRY‎

‎LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA SEATTLE WASHINGTON. Very Good. 2002. On offer is a unique one-of-a-kind and often quite bizarre handwritten journal and diary from a man going through a difficult and intense time in his life. The writing is interesting and occasionally quite strange often going back and forth between straightforward thoughts and poetic expressions and passages. What is most evident from the beginning is that the author is going through a very difficult divorce. Here in this book is where he puts all his deepest and most intimate thoughts about his life his failed relationship and his child. The journal begins with an original poem by the author and then goes into a 16-page description of the breakdown and dissolution of his relationships and his whole life. “I think the only thing that kept me going was her. Life on my side had just about hit rock bottom. Newly divorced and the mental skid was on - I had packed one small bag walked out the door and didn't look back til it was too late. She was everything that woman I'd left behind wasn't. Full of energy a lust for life sexy as the sun and beautiful. She lit up something in me I didn't even know existed.” He writes living in a warehouse with no heat in Los Angeles California. He never explicitly says it but it seems he’s a carpenter mentioning woodworking and house work a few time. It’s obvious from the writing that he’s miserable. He moves up to Seattle with the light of his life his girlfriend Malea. It doesn’t work out well for his girlfriend: “Wasn't all that great for Malea however as my sister looked at her as the "other woman" - the one who had broke up my marriage stolen her beloved sister-in-laws husband and apparently had done so without conscience.” At the end of the 16 pages he writes: “I stayed with Malea - she was so beautiful. I think that was the beginning of the end.” The next page contains another original poem. After the poem comes a letter: “Dear Malea it has been a long time since I have seen you - driving away from that airstrip in New Orleans.I have tried to remember you as a beautiful person. You know that from the last conversation we had on the phone. That's hard to do now. You told Adam that I was psychologically and/or verbally abusive to you and you felt he had taken my "side" in our break-up.” It seems she accused him of abusing her physically and emotionally. By the tone of his writing it might not be far from the truth: “You said that I treated you poorly - ‘not very well’ - your words. I tried. You could never see that. You didn't have a place to live I gave you what I had. You had no one to help you move - your friends Where were they You always put on your bright and shiny face for them never let them see that depression the fear and anger in you. Then you tell them that I was abusive. Fuck you. Your conscience will follow you all the days of your life no matter how you try to convince yourself otherwise. Fuck your therapist. That stupid bitch wouldn't counsel us yet felt she could counsel you on." More poems follow as well as short dated entries that focus on the other side of his life apart from his breakup. He comments on his work and in November 2002 on George W. Bush as president and the war in Iraq. There are also his personal goals: “relationship with Heather first wife and Finnley his child. Spiritual growth - relating the presence of the Lord to life.” The rest of the pages are devoted to sketches of carpentry related work and a few torn pages used for estimates drawings materials etc. It appears the author used the book as his diary and also for a bit of his work. The combination is very interesting and unique. The book is approximately 50 pages in length. Almost all the pages have writing in them. About 30 or so of those pages are his journal and thoughts and the rest are the pages devoted to his work as a carpenter. The book is a ring binder in good condition. The covers show aesthetic wear especially on the edges but nothing structurally. All the pages are still attached to the rings. There is some wear on the beginning and end pages but all else still look good. The handwriting is easy to read in a combination of pencil and blue and black ink. The pencil is slightly faded but can still be easily read. The book is 9” x 12” inches in size. ‎Kansas City Kansas. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1913. Original Wraps. On offer four diaries 1910-1913 written by an unidentified woman who lived in Kansas close to Kansas City. She was a member of DAR Daughters of the American Revolution took a train trip to California one year to Washington DC another and to Boston as well. She seemed to be from a prominent and very political family and talks of family and friends and many social events. Here are some snippets: "DAR meeting at Mrs. Forbes in Potwin. I was one of the hostesses and took part in the program. Read from the life of Dolly Madison. Annual meeting of Colonial Dames at Mrs. Handy’s. 14 present and we had such a good time. Spent the day and evening and had luncheon and a light tea. Left Colorado Springs at 3:30 and had a pleasant ride to Denver where I got lunch and took the train for the two days ride to San Francisco. Hot in Denver but after dark grew cool and finally cold. Slept quite well. Went to a DAR annual meeting. My two year Regency expires and I feel sad to lay down the the honor and care and I shall probably never again take it up. Quincy Garfield spent the afternoon here and we had a good time talking over old friends and old times. Went to town to see parade of native sons and daughters it being 60 years since California admission as a state. Ale dinner at the café. Seventy years old today. Winnifred had a cake for me. All of us invited to John’s to supper and Winnie and I went to theatre with John and Grace. Meeting of Women’s Kansas Day Club. Fine all day meeting with luncheon at noon. Went to Supreme Court Senate and House with Mrs. Borland and then to lunch with Mr. and Mrs. Evans in Congressional Library. Went to Congress in pm and in evening to delegated meeting at Willand. To Capitol to meet House Committee on Agriculture and discuss National Highways. I spoke for Kansas. Went to luncheon at Senator Curtis'. Winnifred and boys went home this evening. Very lonely." Each diary measures 3.5 x 6 inches. ‎c. 1730 - 1750s ORIGINAL 500 PP MANUSCRIPT BOOK OF ANCIENT MONASTIC ALCHEMY CHEMISTRY PHARMACOLOGICAL AND MEDICAL LORE‎

‎Very Good. 1750. Full-Leather. On offer is a superb original 18th Century Latin and some Greek manuscript book of over 328 hand-numbered and some unnumbered leaves of handwritten writings being a treasure trove of ancient medical and alchemy lore and history epitomizing the state of post Renaissance sciences the book includes various charts indices remedies tinctures other pharmacological and chemical recipes alchemy observations treatments and astrological notes. Circa 1730 to 1750s as evidenced by the marbelized end papers and separator pages in this premium 6.25 x 5.5 x 2 inch oblong leather bound clasp enclosed book was an esteemed doctor's medical book or more likely a rich monastic hospital or library given there is are remnant of a paste-down label on the edges though the spine portion of the label is gone. There is a small heart encased by filigree stamped in gilt and a gilt frame on the cover. Research suggests this book was written by 2 or maybe 3 different but similar in style and quality hands giving further credence to a monastic effort. There is a stylized graphic border on each page framing the handwriting. Titles capital letters section headings important notes or comments are in red with the balance in period brown ink. The book has approximately 500 pages handwritten as the numbering accounts for each leaf but the writings are many times on the reverse of the leaf too or 2 pages in other words. Shallow interior vertical crack to the rear cover chipping to the tips of the spine some rubbing and general ageing do not detract from this awesome work of ancient medical and alchemy history. ‎Good. Original Vellum. On offer is a superb original handwritten c. 17th century Latin manuscript book titled "LOGICA". This 340 pp handwritten manuscript is in two 2 sections "SYNTAGMA PHILOSOPHICUM" consists of 80 pp followed by a blank page then "TRACTATUS SECUNDUS DE UNIVERSALIBUS" being 260 handwritten pages. Research suggests this book was a commission to a scribe of o no small talents copying the famed philosophical work by Pierre Gassendi 1592-1655 of the same title SYNTAGMA PHILOSOPHICUM which was posthumously published in 1658. Alternatively there is also a 14th century work by John Wyclif entitled DE LOGICA and who wrote a subsequent work entitled TRACTATUS DE UNIVERSALIBUS. Further study will certainly provide full answers to the work. This book is 6" x 8 3/8" bound in full period vellum. ‎c1807 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT TRAVEL DIARY OF A NEAR OBSESSIVE MAN RECORDING THE STATE OF ENGLAND AND A CENSUS OF HOMEOWNERSHIP AND HOUSING IN EARLY 19TH CENTURY ENGLAND‎

‎OXFORD ENGLAND. Good. 1807. On offer is an exceptional early circa 1807 manuscript travel journal of an unidentified man we suspect an American traveling extensively throughout England. Historians researchers and collectors of the era will find an astonishing amount of detail from this keenly observant and near obsessive writer who is in effect writing a combination encyclopaedia of facts details and observations relating to the history and relationships of all he sees and encounters plus he has also created a census mentioning the number of houses in each and every town village and city he passes or visits. He writes in a 7 x 5 inch soft leather book with over 220 closely written pages and only a few blanks. We have never seen a more detailed almost obsessively detailed account of travels. Beginning as a 'Journal of a Trip to Oxford' it morphs into a comprehensive state of the nation. Historically significant and not without intrigue. From the language that we believe the author is from America and given the time is 'Between the Wars' the manuscript would be well placed as an intelligence report. Besides the details of the country he writes about his journey's successes and failures his encounters and even struggles and much more. On several different occasions he encounters military units or men and he records great details including soldier's complaints and dissatisfaction. He also seems to court danger at least on one occasion he believes he is in danger as two "black men" begin walking with him or falls or gets bogged down. Here are just a few snippets: "I arrived at Rochester about 3 o'clock and having taken a view of the bridge I proceeded to the Cathedral. Rochester Bridge is a handsome structure and was completed in about the year 1392 but is now very much disfigured owing to some accident in the middle…The river in this part is 560 feet broad of the bridge is only surpassed by those of London and Westminster…Having proceeded another mile with my companion I turned off to go to where formerly King Alfred had a palace. The town is small but neat and is governed by a…. There is a good oyster fishery in the Swale and at Kings fleet about 4 miles distance… overtook my old companion who acquainted me that he was an Irishman and about 4 years ago in company with 4 people 1 of whom was a young woman had walked from Minihead to London a distance of 169 miles in 3 days… The waterman who keeps a public house there wished me a good morning. In stepping into the boat a sad disaster befell me for it being rather wet and my feet covered with mud I slipped and fell to the bottom not so much hurt but that I could make shift to walk to the public house… Having walked about the town for some time I proceeded to Mr. Shadgett's to obtain my pass to the castle they insisted upon my taking breakfast and soon after doing so forth with Miss Shadgett who was so good as to offer to lead me to the town…we walked upon the beach as far as Sir Sidney Jolly the habitation of Sir Sidney Smith it is a curious range of low buildings and may parts are in ruins… The church near which is erected a monument of Capt Hanson the officer of company of his Majesty's ship Beazen lost near this place on the 26 Jan 1800 105 men were lost only one surviving to bear the news of this melancholy catastrophe. The monument is surrounded with iron rails and is adorned with naval troopers shells…. We parted and making towards a house seated in a bottom to enquire my way and asking for a glass of water the woman insisted on my taking a pint of beer and would not let me make any return. I ascended a very steep hill to the lighthouse which is a low building but seated naturally so very high… I arrived in Exeter about ½ past 9 and proceeded to the Cathedral walking about the body of the church and was addressed by verger asking if I would walk up the tower. To this I assented he informing me that from thence is a fine prospect of the city which I found to be the case the city from the tower looks very neat the roof of the houses being all covered with a kind of grey slate. This tower is 130 feet high the ascent is by a flight of the steps very much like those of the monument but much smaller… Two chimney sweepers who were sitting by the wayside on my passing immediately joined me enquiring if I was going to Which I could not deny…He observed that he had seen my face before this I thought did not look at all well knowing he had not. After walking a little farther in which time I bore a rather silent part of the conversation he said perhaps I was afraid of 2 such black fellows but he was sure there was no reason. In this way we walked for about 4 miles and during this time his behavior seemed to indicate some bad intentions. I parted with them saying I was going to the lead mines this was the place we were to stop having seen them safe in the house and thinking I had made a lucky escape. I went to the lead mines. My way to these mines which are rather small is over a very steep mountain one of the workmen got to accompany me he led me into a very narrow passage… I was obliged to sleep in the same room with the Man and his wife which was not very agreeable and I don't think I should have stopped had I known this soon enough to have provided myself with another… In Exeter I saw several very curious machines laid across the horses as a saddle by means of which they carry immense weights. I now proceed on my way to Bath then to the town of Callumpton….this day tho very lame walked about 32 miles. The Inn I chanced to stop at was but an indifferent one but they paid me great attention. I had for supper some veal pork and mashed potatoes cheese beer and cyder and in the morning I had about 1 qt of mead for which I paid 2. Here I overtook a little boy who was going to Bexhill and offered to show me the way across some fields which saves a great deal of ground he amazed with several little anecdotes of the Hanoverian Regiment and gave me an account of the loss of the Spanish vessel near Bexhill. To the left of Bexhill are more fortifications and to the right are the remains of Bulver H castle where King… At Bexhill is the 40th regiment the Hanover and a few artillery. The ships were all open as on another day this being Sunday… A sergeant knowing which way his interest lay asked me from whence I came having answered him very dryly he requested me to join his regiment but I very soon undeceived him and he retired with great humility… stood the shrine of Sir Thomas Becket. Part of the floor is curiously inlaid with mosaic work. It contains the monuments of Henry 4th & his queen Edward the Black Prince . In the opposite side of this isle is the place where Becket was killed. I crossed the fields to Winchester . intended to have slept but could not procure a bed being all occupied by the military. Winchester is the prettiest place I have yet been to.You enter the town by a curious old gate over which over which are 4 towers. The Church I believe was formerly an abbey of which are some remains exclusive of part now occupied as a Church.but here appears to be only the walls remaining here is a pretty house belonging to Mr. Dent. From Stilton to Homan Cross I walked with a soldier of one of the York Regiments he informed me everything about the Garrison and complained much of the strictness of their generals there were then 3 regiments 1/3 of which was on duty every day. Both persons and barracks are very indifferent buildings. The prisons are very old and at a distance have the appearance high barns. I believe there are 8 of these buildings each containing 2 or 3 stories and are enclosed by a double wood fence between it the sentinels walk since their attempt to escape about 3 months after my being there they have begun to erect a high wall…" Just an astonishing record of England seen from a super diarist's eyes over 200 years ago. On offer is a superb suite of three 3 original photographs of one particular woman on a visit or sojourn to the renowned 'Dove Cottage' of William Wordsworth fame in Grasmere Cumbria England. All three photos are mounted on thick matte board. Circa late 1890s all the photos have pencil inscriptions identifying the scene with a Wordsworth poem or quotation. One photo states 'Dove Cottage a Chat with Mrs. Dixon' another 'Lake Windermere' and lastly 'Friar's Crag'. 4 x 2.75 inches on a 5 x 4.25 board. ‎EGYPT NORTH AFRICA SUEZ ISMAILIA. Good. 1919. On offer are two super original handwritten notebooks by what appears to be an unidentified British Army Officer who states that he has lived in the Near East for 4 years and was on leave in 1919.One gets the impression the officer intended write a book and lecture on the subjects contained: Book 1 deals with Egyptian occult practices and amulets in great detail. The author of this manuscript affects a very skeptical tone overtly Christian and may be writing as a counterpoint to Sir Ernest Alfred Wallis Budge who wrote extensively on Egyptian occult amulets and who translated the Egyptian Book Of The Dead which helped increase the public appetite for the subject. Skeptical he may be but clearly he is fascinated by the occult beliefs of the mass of the people he has met in his travels. The text covers: evil spirits - ginns amulets - ornamental charms - paper tin lead wood magic powders plants curses the healing cup the black magic trembling cup good and bad angels six pages on the evil eye and cures rabies beads etc. etc. The second book is the text to accompany a slide show: "Up the Nile to Assouan and a glimpse of Abu Simbel". 100 pages with an index no slides but very erudite. This is not tourist stuff but scientific discourse. The books are in very good condition and measure 9" x 7" and 44 and 100 pages respectively. Handwriting is very clear. ‎c1947 PHOTOGRAPHIC AND TYPESCRIPT JOURNAL OF A MARINE FROM TENNESSEE - SUPER RELIC OF WWII BY A CHARMING NEAR POETIC SURVIVOR OF GUADALCANAL‎

‎TENNESSEE NEW CALEDONIA GUADALCANAL SOUTH PACIFIC. Very Good. 1947. On offer is a sensational relic of World War II being a photographic diary with accompanying typescript journal commentary by an unidentified soldier from Tennessee. The Marine did a brilliant job putting together a handmade diary illustrated with two groups of photographs the kind you might have gotten in the PX during the War. Our sense is that the author has either returned to the area or hasn't yet left the arena of the War but soon after the War our author begins this charming retelling of experiences both good and terrible in the South Pacific. He uses twenty-five photographs and then details and stories relating to the people he was with or the scenes depicted in the photos. It is heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time. The soldier does not tell us his name but he makes references to being from Tennessee. He writes of taking a ship to New Caledonia and of people he worked with and situations he encountered. A great deal of his time was spent in Guadalcanal. In one moving passage he tells the story of his friend and mentor Howard H. Gabby Gould III; a soldier during World War I who reenlisted after Pearl Harbor. He became a drill sergeant and then made his way to New Caledonia. There he learned that he was considered unfit for overseas duty. Heartbreakingly Gabby dies of a broken heart 2 weeks after being shipped stateside. ‎FRANCE. Very Good. On offer is an interesting handwritten manuscript document beginning "Discussions sur les exemptions Reguliers" and other chapters " Accusations Contre L'Assemble 1650" et al. Circa early 1700s report is a history of the various assemblies over the 17th century appearing to start in 1605 at the end of Clement VIII's reign or soon after his death through to the late 1600s. Of particular note to collector's and students of Catholic history will be the detailed lists of scholars and clerics and the various questions exemptions discussed by the attendees. This 58 page document is in booklet format with simple string binding. One finds on the last page a separate notation in what appears to be another hand likely a librarian or archivist notation. ‎World War Two WWII German Heer Soldier's Photo Album Featuring the German Military and Sites around Europe‎

‎Germany Poland Europe. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1939. On offer is an absolutely superb photo record of the work and travels of a German soldier across war torn Europe. The person who put this album together is a German soldier. He was a member of the Heer or Army one of the 3 elements of the Wehrmacht or National Defence Force. A separate element of the German military was the Shultzstaffel or Nazi Party paramilitary force. They were known and recognized by the abbreviation SS usually depicted as the distinctive lightening runes. They in turn had a combat force known as the Waffen SS. We know that he was an army soldier vs SS soldier by the insignia seen in all of the pictures. The standard badge of the Heer is the national tri-color cockade with a concentric black and white circles and a red central dot. And a red center dot This is present throughout the photos on many of his subjects. The Waffen SS ‘death’s head’ badge or totenkopf is not found in any picture. Further he most likely was a member of an army engineering unit as one picture depicts the presentation of a Pioneer Engineering Battalion flag. The pictures were taken in widely different locations in Europe which also suggests an Engineering Unit as they were present in every theatre of war and area of occupation. The pictures provide a fascinating look at daily life in a combat. The pictures are almost exclusively of enlisted men. The pictures capture soldiers in a variety of circumstances. Many are engaged in parades or marches. Others are doing agricultural work. This is not an anomaly as the German government recognized that food production was a critical weakness and sought to remedy this. Other pictures showing the transfer of wounded soldiers onto hospital trains. Many show soldiers at rest or in casual circumstances – several sitting at a table having a cup of coffee enjoying a beer with fellow soldiers group pictures of soldiers out in the streets. Some pictures can be geo-located. There are pictures taken in France as several show the Verdun Monument located in the north-eastern department of Meuse very close to the ruined village of Fleurydevant Douaumont. Another picture shows the evocative sculpture known as the Wounded Lion also in Fleury-devant Douaumont. Still another 32/1 shows the Douaumony Ossuary which contains the skeletal remains of at least 130000 unidentified combatants of both France and Germany. There is a picture of the Church of St. Elizabeth in the city of Marburg located in central Germany. There is a visible reference on the back of one photograph to the city of Wroclaw Poland. This city was originally in Germany and was known as Breslau. During World War II Breslau witnessed significant persecution of its Polish and Jewish population including deportations to forced labour and Nazi concentration camps Also tens of thousands of forced labourers and prisoners of war of various nationalities were imprisoned in multiple German labour camps and prisons throughout the city which would necessitate the presence of Engineering units. Another group of pictures are geo-located to Poland. Specifically there is a photograph of the Black Madonna of Czestochowa as well as other pictures taken in Czestochowa. Another picture is geolocated to the Polish city of Krakow. For a military historian this is a superb collection of authentic photographs that document aspects of the daily life of ordinary soldiers caught up in the greatest conflagration of modern history. This album measures 7.0 inches by 11.5. The covers are a black pebbled leather and are in good condition as is the binding. The binding is a white cord in good condition. Embossed on the front cover in white is the distinctive ‘stahlhelm’ or ‘steel helmet’ commonly referred to as the ‘coal scuttle’ helmet The helmet bears the crest of the German army a German eagle holding a swastika in its talons known as the Reichsadler . The pages are in good condition. The album contains 154 black and white photographs that measure on average x by y inches. The pictures are mounted in the album. Some of the photos that have come loose from the mountings do have notations on the back but it is not possible to remove the photos that are not loose without damaging the album. The booklet is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The text pages are generally clean and bright. there are a couple of spots on the first several pages Laid-in are the graduation program one page folded one and a course completion award for Naval Training School Radio for Ruth Eileen Ewl. The course took place at Miami University in Oxford Ohio at the same time as the Eleventh Graduating class radio of Navy cadets. "To be eligible for officer candidate school women had to be aged 20 to 49 and possess a college degree or have two years of college and two years of equivalent professional or business experience. Volunteers at the enlisted level had to be aged 20 to 35 and possess a high school or a business diploma or have equivalent experience. The WAVES were primarily white but 72 African-American women eventually served. The Navy's training of most WAVE officer candidates took place at Smith College Northampton Massachusetts. Specialized training for officers was conducted on several college campuses and naval facilities. Most enlisted members received recruit training at Hunter College in the Bronx New York City. After recruit training some women attended specialized training courses on college campuses and at naval facilities. The WAVES served at 900 stations in the United States. The territory of Hawaii was the only overseas station where their staff was assigned. Many female officers entered fields previously held by men such as medicine and engineering. Enlisted women served in jobs from clerical to parachute riggers. Many women experienced workplace hostility from their male counterparts. The Navy's lack of clear-cut policies early on was the source of many of the difficulties. The WAVES' peak strength was 86291 members. Upon demobilization of the officer and enlisted members Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal Fleet Admiral Ernest King and Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz all commended the WAVES for their contributions to the war effort.
