Contemporary full blonde calf binding. Decorated raised spine. Red morocco title label. Corners slightly bumped. Good copy. To understand the significance of these editions it is necessary to go back a little in history: The papal bull Unigenitus 1713 takes up and perfects the various bulls against ""Jansenist heresy"" by particularly condemning the theses of Quesnel and Arnauld it would give rise to a religious dispute in France that would gradually worsen into a major political crisis over confession tickets and refusal of sacraments to those who opposed the bull. Not only would the French clergy be divided but Parliament itself would go on strike and oppose the king in this matter who had ordered the application of the bull. The confrontation between parliament and the king would last more than 20 years. The bull Unigenitus gave new vigor to a moribund Jansenism thus causing the opposite effect. S. n. unknown

Japanese Postcard Album with Lacquered Cover and Hand-Colored Real Photo Postcards
Japan 1910. Hardcover. Very Good -. 15 x 20 cm. album containing 52 postcards 47 of them hand-colored. Black lacquer boards; front board illustrated with scene of a woman and a man painted in gilt and red. None of the postcards have been used and none have dates of publication. Some of the cards were produced by Tonboya in Yokohama; the firm was actively publishing hand-colored postcards from about 1910 to about 1930. The first postcard is a view of Mt. Fuji with a foreground illustration painted in gilt and black. The next two are portraits of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken in black with a gilt emblem above each of their heads. The hand-colored views are of streets scenes temples and parks in Yohohama Kamakura Tokyo Kyoto Nara and Kamata; a number include geishas. There are two views of women in Yoshiwara. A complete list is available on request. In Very Good- Condition: front board is detached and is chipped along the lower edge and upper corners; color is bright on front board; postcards are clean and bright without chipping. hardcover

Philadelphia: Town Book and Job Printing House 1884. First edition of this record of post-war social meetings by members of the army; from the library of General William Tecumseh Sherman. Royal octavo original morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the front panel. General Sherman and his son’s bookplates to the front pastedown calling card of 12th Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic Robert Burns Beath laid in. In very good condition with rubbing to the extremities. General Sheman’s library was inherited by Philemon Tecumseh Sherman who transferred the library to his niece Eleanor Sherman Fitch before he died. Eleanor was the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter Maria “Minnie†Ewing Sherman Fitch. Until now the book was held at the family estate in Washington County Pennsylvania. Of Grand Army Reunions General William Tecumseh Sherman explained that "the object of the reunion is purely social and designed to preserve the memories of war and to cherish the friendships formed during that period of our national history." General Sherman loved army reunions typically eschewing the uniform and insignia of his high rank preferring to wear a Grand Army of the Republic hat like everyone else Katharine Burton Three Generations 1947 p. 216. Nashville Tenn: State of Tennessee 1876. Very Good -. 1 sheet 43 x 35 cm. Printed commission form includes engraving of a seated woman holding a striped shield next to an eagle with its wings up and a gold seal of the state. The election had been held on Aug. 3 1876; the commission is dated Aug. 17 1876 and is signed by Governor James D. Porter and Secretary of State Charles Gibbs. James Dave Porter 1828-1912 served in the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1859 to 1861. He introduced what became known as the Porter Resolutions which declared that Tennessee would side with the seceding southern states if war were declared between those states and the Union. In May 1861 after the the Battle of Fort Sumter and as required by those resolutions Tennessee sided with the Confederacy. Porter became an adjutant general and later served as General Cheatham's chief of staff. After the war he served a governor of the state from 1875 to 1879; United States Assistant Secretary of State from 1885 to 1887; and Minister to Chile in 1893 and 1894. Porter was also president of the Nashville Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway from 1880 to 1884 and was a strong supporter of the University of Nashville. He became chancellor of the University of Nashville in 1901 and president of the associated Peabody College the following year. James T. Shelley the new justice of the peace of Roane County had fought for the Union in the Civil War as a major in the 1st Tennessee Infantry a colonel in the 5th Union Regiment of Tennessee Infantry and a colonel in the 7th Union Regiment of Tennessee Mounted Infantry. In Very Good- Condition: creases from having been folded; starting to separate at center horizontal fold; shadow on the upper section from the gold seal in the lower section; otherwise clean and bright. Robert King Bird 1823-1885 commanded the Union Army's 1st Tennessee Infantry from 1861 to 1863 when it became the 1st Tennessee Mounted Infantry or Byrd's Mounted Men. After the Civil War he served in the Tennessee Senate from 1879 to 1881.
