This prominent New York attorney was a noted Lincoln scholar author of the 1954 "Three Lincoln Masterpieces"; charter member and vice president of the noted Civil War Round Table of New York and namesake of the prestigious Benjamin Barondess Award for new Civil War titles. TNS 1p 8½" X 11" New York NY 1951 November 20. Addressed to CARL HAVERLIN 1899-1985 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar radio pioneer and president of Broadcast Music Inc. BMI. Near fine. Referencing a Civil War Round Table event of the previous day Barondess jokes "Did you think you were going to escape thanks for your invitation to me to be one of the panel at the Gettysburg Address Seminar last night If so the error was profound." Boldly signed. Haverlin has scrawled the draft of a brief reply in bold pencil at upper left as was his custom. Accompanied by a carbon copy typescript of the very talk Barondess had given at that seminar 10pp rectos only 8½" X 11" n.p. 1951 November 19. Very good. Titled simply "BENJAMIN BARONDESS'S TALK" this double-spaced typescript on thin onion skin paper presents his overview of Lincoln's speech its preparation and reception. The following year an article by Barondess titled "The Gettysburg Address: Revealing facts about one of the 'Supreme Masterpieces of the English language'" was published in the Spring 1952 issue of "Autograph Collectors' Journal" and this is presumably the precursor of that article. England. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1876. Non-Book. On offer is an autographed letter handwritten and signed by Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts 1st Baroness 1814-1906. Dated Torquay May 12 1876 Baroness Burdett-Coutts mentions plays "Queen Mary" and refers to Tennyson. Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts was a British philanthropist. Burdett-Coutts was widely known as "the richest heiress in England". She was a great collector of paintings including many Old Masters. In 1871 in recognition of her philanthropic work Queen Victoria conferred on her a suo jure peerage as Baroness Burdett-Coutts of Highgate and Brookfield in the County of Middlesex. Charles Dickens dedicated his novel Martin Chuzzlewit to her and she had many royal and eminent friends. On 18 July 1872 she became the first woman to be presented with the Freedom of the City of London at the Guildhall and in 1874 she became Edinburgh's first woman Freeman and was also presented with the Freedom of that city. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1937. First edition of Barrie's rousing inaugural address; a favorite of John F. Kennedy's as a college student at Harvard which would later play a role in the development of his Pulitzer Prize-winning work Profiles in Courage. Octavo original cloth. Association copy inscribed by John F. Kennedy on the front free endpaper "Dear Jerry Here's coals to Newcastle! Courage to the Courageous! John Kennedy Christmas 1939." In 1939 Kennedy toured Europe the Soviet Union the Balkans and the Middle East in preparation for his Harvard senior honors thesis. He then toured Berlin where he became involved for the first time in U.S. diplomacy at the outbreak of WWII. Kennedy developed an interest in political philosophy as an upperclassman at Harvard and in 1940 completed his thesis "Appeasement in Munich" regarding the efficacy of British negotiations during the Munich Agreement. The thesis would go on to become a bestseller under the title Why England Slept. In addition to addressing Britain's unwillingness to strengthen its military in the lead-up to World War II the book also called for an Anglo-American alliance against the rising totalitarian powers. In 1956 Kennedy published his second major work Profiles in Courage a volume of short biographies describing acts of bravery and integrity by eight United States Senators. Profiles in Courage went on to become a best-seller and won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 1957. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco slipcase. A rare and unique association copy. Though he achieved literary acclaim as a dramatist most notably with the timeless children's classic Peter Pan James Matthew Barrie tackled many subjects over the course of his career often grappling with philosophical and psychological topics. The breadth of his intellect is on full display in Courage the inaugural address delivered upon his election as Lord Rector of St. Andrew's University in an effort to inspire the youth before him. Of the daring comments included in the rousing speech he said "I sound to myself as if I were advocating a rebellion though I am really asking for a larger friendship." This copy is something of a curiosity for it seems to match no recorded edition. Following Riall as closely as possible It is clearly a variant of the second issue of the Trade Edition: a gilt backstrip; b 24 plates; c no gilt top. BUT a upper board blocked in gilt and pink; b front and rear endpaper maps; c list of contents; d list of illustrations; e 'Little White Bird' on title verso. A VERY SCARCE UNRECORDED VARIANT. It has been performed innumerable times since then was developed by Barrie into the 1911 novel Peter and Wendy and has been adapted by others into feature films musicals and more. ALS 2pp recto and verso 4½" X 7¼" Foley Place London 1841 May 5. Addressed to Mr. Eversfield. Very good. Mounting trace along leftmost ½" of first page touching almost no text; couple of minor foxing spots. Interesting and cryptic financial matters: "I shall be glad to be informed when I may expect another remittance on account of the Sale of the Old Materials of Bredperaton House and when it is likely you will forward to me a Marked Catalogue the Balance Sheet and the Balance. I am not sure whether I acknowledged the receipt of the first remittance of L 800." There was an auctioneer by the name of Eversfield active around this time in Kent County but what Barry's connection may have been to an auction and what the "old Materials" may have been remains to be verified. Nicely penned in brown ink. A nice example. unknown

Barry 1855-1919 served on the western frontier and in the Philippines in the Spanish American War and was President of the Army War College and Superintendent of the Military Academy 1910-1912. Later he commanded in Cuba China and Philippines and served in France in World War I. In this short letter signed "Thomas H. Barry" he recounts his ranks from cadet at West Point to Major General. Faujas de Saint-Fond naturalist and geologist financially supported the research of the Montgolfier brothers papermakers based on Cavendish's experiments and Priestley's work on hot air. They flew two balloons at Annonay the second with farm animals by means of bags filled with hot air.
