The Doctrines of Friends: Or Principles of the Christian Religion as Held By The Society of Friends Commonly Called Quakers
Montpleasant Ohio: Elisha Bates 1825. The author was a prominent Friend or Quaker in Ohio during the 1820s and 1830s. Bates became the publisher of The Philanthropist from 1818 to 1822. The Philanthropist was the first anti-slavery newspaper in the United States and also supported temperance and the fair treatment of Native Americans. Bates began publishing another periodical The Moral Advocate in March 1821. Bates also became the leader of the Mount Pleasant Meeting of the Society of Friends Quakers. Bates' only book this volume was self-published in 1825. Author Donald Good in his 1969 article "Elisha Bates and Social Reform" states that Bates' Doctrine of Friends was "judged to be one of the best brief accounts of Friends' view in existence." After the publication of his book dramatic changes began to foment within the Quakers religion with what became known as the Hicksite - Orthodox Schism. Bates who favored Orthodoxy was a staunch opponent of Elias Hicks the Hicks in Hicksite who favored liberalism. Bates became a controversial figure. He was disowned converted to Methodist and became a Methodist minister. He late returned to Quakerism. There are three signatures and a personal library stamp on flyleaf - this book has a historical provenance: the first signature is that of Wyman Chamberlain 1772-1838 followed by "his book." Chamberlain was the son of a Revolutionary war soldier and a prominent member of the Friends congregation of Grand Isle Vermont. The next signer in pencil was Mary Chamberlain 1808-1887. Genealogy research suggests that Mary was likely Wyman's daughter-in-law the wife of his only son William. The last signer in ink was Reba B. Hoag. Reba was the sister of Mary the sister-in-law of William and the step-daughter of Wyman. She lived with her sister and brother-in-law. Lastly there is also a personal library stamp of Jed P. Clark. Mr. Clark 1825-1906 was the son of Joseph Clark a very prominent man in Milton Vermont who is still revered today as one of its founding fathers. Jed P. Clark succeeded his father as the owner of the largest town industry - a saw mill and grist mill in Milton Falls Vermont and a director of the Vermont & Canada and Central Vermont railroads. Items related to Jed P. Clark's mercantile store such as its script are still collectible today. Clark was also briefly one of Milton's postmasters. We contacted one of the Quaker libraries and were told that it was "interesting that someone at Grand Isle had Bates' book because Bates was not in agreement with the kind of Quakerism that was practiced there." This is a very interesting and culturally important book particularly for the history of the author and owners. Full leather binding 320 pages. The book has wear commensurate with age: the leather is worn; binding is split at outside back seam with the hinge held on by one stitch. Bumped corners. Dark tanning and foxing to pages. A leaf or flower was pressed into the back of the book and has left its imprint on the last several blank pages. Penciled price notes on inside cover and fep. Number penciled at top of Preface page. His second marriage was to Mary Lee Hartford and the third was to Vera Lee Shelton." - See Wikipedia Daphne Nancy Beth Fairbanks was born in 1940. She was the daughter of Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Mary Lee Epling. She married firstly Nigel David Weston in 1960. She and Nigel David Weston were divorced in 1980. He joined the newspaper group in 1891 and worked as chief reporter for both newspapers for 33 years before becoming news editor of The Citizen. This Canadian-American chemist-inventor and author is credited with a wide range of inventions; he held 58 U.S. patents and 450 foreign patents among them a microcrystalline cellulose for pharmaceutical use and a microcrystalline collagen. Signed First Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled in Cincinnati Ohio on November 10 1972 with "First Day of Issue" noted. Fine. FDC for the 8-cent "Pharmacy" stamp. No decorative cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address present. Much of the front side except for the stamp and cancellation is filled with a typed biographical statement about Battista as follows: "The Battista boy liked the idea of writing letters to tell major corporations how to improve their products. In the 1930's he told a chewing gum company it should coat the sticks with starch so they couldn't stick to the paper in hot weather. In 1955 while working on an idea to make a better rayon tire cord to compete with nylon he came up with a water suspension of cellulose crystals. 'The resulting product is still "revolutionary"' Battista said. He stayed at Princeton until 1970 and in those days came up with a micro-crystalline collagen. This led to the creation of the Avitene hemostat which uses collagen and is now used in every operating room across the nation." Below this on the cover's lower margin the scientist boldly inscribes and signs in black ballpoint: "Wishing Paul Johnston every / success / Orlando A. Battista / 10/31/79." Generally very clean inside but some light foxing a previous owner name on the endpaper and a light moisture stain in faint outline to the lower edge and margin of the last pages of Volume IV. The Author's Personal Copies No Duplicates Of His Nineteenth Century Works On Paleontology And Related Areas Of Biology 127 Of His Published Writings Including Original Offprints Extracts Title Pages Manuscripts And Notes In German Or English With A Few Clippings And Photographs Laid In Loosely. Three Volumes Dark Brown Pebbled Cloth Over Brown Patterned Boards. Bindings Worn And Frayed Material Should Be Professionally Rebound With Archival Materials. His Obituary In The American Naturalist Sept 1898 Pp 717-718 Refers To A Total Output Of 143 Papers Being Reported By His Brother Which Possibly Includes Reprints And Translations As He Wrote In Both German And English And This Collection Appears Complete. Baur Was Last A Professor At The University Of Chicago 1892 -1898. Baur Wrote Extensively On Various Paleontological Topics. He Also Built On The Late Nineteenth Century Theory Of Evolution And Wrote Extensively On His Idea That Changes In Morphology Might Be Brought Out By A Change In Environment Including Nutrition Etc. Such That These Changed Characteristics Would Persist In Successive Generations So Long As The Changed Conditions Persisted For Which There Is Now Some Evidence For At Least Three Generations. He Cited Extensively To Personal Observations And Reports From Others. His Work Differs From Weizmann Etc. In That He Maintained That Changes In Environment Could Bring Out Changes In Morphology Without Changes In The Genetic Material Such Changes Persisting In Successive Generations When The Environmental Changes Also Persisted. In One Such 1891 Paper He Concludes With A Citation To Darwin's Letter To Wagner: "In My Opinion The Greatest Error Which I Have Committed Has Been Not Allowing Sufficient Weight To The Direct Action Of The Environment - I.E. Food Climate Etc. -Independently Of Natural Selection." Although Now Dismissed Some Because Of His Neo-Lamarckian Ideas His Departures From Rigorous Scientific Evidence In Genetics Is Perhaps Less Serious Than The Acceptance And Promotion Of The Ideas Of "Phlogiston" By Important Earlier Chemists And Of "Ether" By His Contemporaries Among Important Physicists; And The Emphasis Of The Neo-Lamarckians On Environmental Nutritional And Physiological Factors Is More In Keeping With Modern Understanding Of Individual Development Than The Emphasis Upon Purely Genetic Evolution Which Treats Only Classes Of Individuals By Arbitrary Groupings Into Classes Of Individuals . Complete Collections Of Original Manuscripts And Scientific Offprints From This Period Are Increasingly Uncommon In The Market.
