‎BOSTON TO CHICAGO TO WASHINGTON DC. Good. 1895. On offer is a fascinating part journal and part scrapbook of a 3000 mile trip written and compiled by Benjamin W. Parker for his wife in 1895. Invited to accompany a friend on an extensive business trip Parker his wife and mother travel mostly by train starting in Boston to Chicago and the mid west and through to Washington DC. Parker creates what iss meant to be a memory album for his wife to cherish in future years. Typed on onion skin tipped in with ephemera throughout the depth and breadth of the journal is wonderful providing a lovely perspective of America through this interesting man's eyes. There are personal anecdotes and we learn that Parker was a unique individual and highlights of the journal include a story of how he got kicked out of Naval Academy for pulling the coattails of President Grant on a dare. Ephemera tipped in includes a handwritten invitation by Senator William Frye of Maine to Charles Hamlin Asst Secretary of the Treasury on Senate stationary. Hamlin later became the first Chairman of the Federal Reserve and Frye was elected to replace James Blaine as Senator from Maine. In very good condition with light toning to the spine and front panel closed tear to the front free endpaper. General William Tecumseh Sherman’s son P. T. Sherman was a lawyer in New York specializing in labor and insurance and was elected a member of the New York Board of Alderman in the late 1880s. In the early 1900s he was appointed the New York Commissioner of Labor. He transferred his library to his niece Eleanor Sherman Fitch the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter Maria “Minnie†Ewing Sherman Fitch before he died. Until now the book was held at the family estate in Washington County Pennsylvania. Of Grand Army Reunions General William Tecumseh Sherman explained that "the object of the reunion is purely social and designed to preserve the memories of war and to cherish the friendships formed during that period of our national history." Telliamed constitutes an anagram of Maillet the author's name. The edition was published by J. Ant. Guers. The work is dedicated to Cyrano de Bergerac. Contemporary full brown sheep binding. Spine with raised bands decorated. Red morocco title label. Skillful restorations almost invisible to headcaps and bands. Good copy very fresh. In this fictional work Maillet establishes important theories that he forged through his geological studies in Egypt and in Arabic countries where he was also able to consult rare manuscripts of scientific theories. He believes that the earth is in fact a star and that it lives according to perpetual cycles that will lead it once again to become similar to the sun. This treatise is moreover known for bearing the premises of Darwinian evolutionary theory with Maillet making the sea the origin of all living beings. Maillet's contemporaries did not admire his materialistic theories which appear today so avant-garde and revolutionary. Maillet was consul general of France in Egypt and he produced several works on this country whose profound knowledge transformed his vision of the origin of the earth and geological theories.
