Beardslee was a designer and manufacturer of gas fixtures, electroliers, and combination fixtures with manufactory and salesrooms at 216, 218 and 220 South Jefferson Street, Chicago. This massive catalogue of electric light fixtures is printed upon glossy stock and includes 284 fifteen by twelve inch black and white photographic plates, numbered 222 through 506, each proudly displaying an average of three models for a total of over eight-hundred different offerings, complete with pricing, dimensions and other details. Plates 499-506 present photos and detailed drawings of a diverse assortment of shades, brass parts, lamps (bulbs), sockets, reflectors, glassware, etc. A two-page index indicates the plate upon which each model number can be found. Last page is a colour plate illustrating the nine colours of art glass used in the fixtures and shades illustrated. Binding intact. Minor warp to navy cloth front board which features brilliant silver decoration and lettering. Minor bits of writing upon dark brown front free endpaper. Copyright date underlined. No other markings. Fore-edges of boards degraded by decades-past moisture exposure which also affected almost the entire fore-edge of all pages with the result that approximately one-eighth to one-quarter inch of the coated paper has disintegrated. Fortunately, no text or images affected by this loss. On some pages, dampstaining inpacts up to one-quarter inch in from fore-edge, again with no impact to text or images. Presents a magnificent spectrum of American electric lighting from the early 1900s. Book

1864 ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR ERA CYPHER BOOK OF COMPLEX MATHEMATICS WITH A HEAVY EMPHASIS ON ASTRONOMY
UNITED STATES 1864. On offer is a most unusual original notebook dating from the middle of the 19th Century. The notebook measures 8 inches by 6 inches. It contains 44 pages and is 90% complete. The hardboard cover has separated from the spine and at some point in the past an attempt was made to secure it with tape. All pages are attached. There is evidence that some pages were torn out in the past. The handwriting is copperplate and legible. The notebook belonged to Beatrice C Stains. It principally contains notes calculations and charts relating to Astronomy. However in some pages she has either pasted in copies of poems or written in some in her own hand. Context suggests that she is an American. Casual research did not turn up any additional biographical information. The notebook is a type of cipher book. These books went by various names: cyphering books copy books etc. By the late 19th/early 20th century the advent of commercially-produced text books led to the demise of student-prepared cipher books. Many of the powerful abstract mathematical and math-related theories in use today originated in the 19th century In the 18th and early 19th centuries when paper was still expensive and textbooks not generally available students oftentimes had to write out their own texts by hand. Following their studies these copy books would be kept for future reference. The teacher was likely guided by one of the many mathematics or astronomy textbooks in use in the early 1800s. He or she would have expected the student to memorize rules and examples and thus learn how to carry out the operations for later use in practical circumstances. Stains would have copied down the cases to follow later rather than simply writing out a general principle. The teacher probably also expected the student to copy the material neatly. This not only offered an opportunity to practice his or her penmanship but prepared a reference book for use as an adult. 'Cases' are presented as problems with a written description of the problem to be solved. That would be followed by a detailed working of the mathematics of the problem to arrive at a solution. What also makes this notebook interesting is the inclusion of a number of literature pieces. These poems are romantic types such as Just Before The Battle Mother and The Sailor's Weeping Bride. This is a superb example of the key learning tool by which subjects such as astronomy were taught in the 19th century. Without a doubt it helped convey a real sense of ownership of the principles inscribed within and were valued possessions for many students. A researcher studying the roots of modern astronomy and the teaching of astronomy would find this a valuable reference work. Contemporary research has shown that cipher books are not widely available any more as a tool for research and study. This volume is a classic example of that lost learning instrument. Fair. She mentions Teddy again who she is mad at for getting too smart and wanting to take her home wonder how he will be without her talking to him. Sisters been married for three years now and is still pretty and lively you would not think she is married. Poor teddy wonder if anyone will love me like he does 5 men killed in electric chair one was Jewish. This is a very neat insight into the mind of a girl from New York her father was a musician and she played with him as well. The book is a large 13 x 8 inch ledger book the front cover of the diary is off but present has 300 pages and last 3 or 4 or hard to read. The inner book is only secured to the cover now by 2 pieces of string. There are 15 colour plates lots of black and white sketches and 94 pages 2 loose. There is some pencil marks on some of the illustrations though mainly around them some little hand was trying to make them picture frames!. There are a couple of small red crayon marks in the text on one page. The cover was dark red but has faded to nearer brown. The picture on the front is pasted on and the lettering is silver/white. The spine has some damage at the top and the cover has rubbed in a couple of places. </p> F.Warne & Co hardcover

There is a dark mark towards the top left corner of the front cover there is a small mark near the leading edge and I think these are old ink marks the back has no marks and the corners are rubbed. There are faint pencil marks on the interior of the front board and the name 'Molly' written in a child's hand in pencil on the first endpaper this name is written again twice on the plain back of the frontispiece. There are no other marks. Slight looseness. 85 pages including plates all present and correct. Greeny blue grey covers end plates have brown and white cats.</p> F.Warne & Co hardcover
