‎Cornell University unknown Ithaca N.Y.: Cornell University 1963. Very Good. 1 sheet 23 x 15 cm. The program consisted of the Cornell Symphony Orchestra conducted by Karel Husa performing Debussy's Prelude: L'Après-midi d'un Faune; Glazunov's Violin Concerto in A Minor with Sheldon Kurland on violin; J.S. Bach's Brandenburg Concerto no. 2 featuring Adolf Scherbaum on trumpet William Browder on flute Theodore Lowi on oboe and Sheldon Kurland on violin; Mozart's Symphony no. 31; and an excerpt from Smetana's Ma Vlast. Scherbaum's signature is in blue across the upper part of the program. Trumpeter Adolf Scherbaum played an important role in the revival of the Baroque trumpet. On this program he played the piece with which he was most associated the second Brandenburg Concerto. The following year Sheldon Kurland moved to Nashville where he became a session musician who worked on recording sessions for many country music stars. The flute in the Brandenburg was played by prominent mathematician William Browder who was at the time Cornell University associate professor of mathematics. The oboe was played by Cornell professor of political science Theodore Lowi. In Very Good Condition: one vertical crease through the middle; clean and intact.‎

‎A Catalogue of the Classic Contents of Strawberry Hill Collected by Horace Walpole‎

‎Smith and Robins unknown London: Smith and Robins 1842. Very Good -. xxiv 250 p.: 1 leaf of engraved portrait of Horace Walpole in-text illustrations; 29 cm. Later 19th-century brown cloth spine with original boards. Engraved cover title: A Catalogue of the Contents of Strawberry Hill. Engraved title page. George Robins the auctioneer advertised the sale to begin on April 25 1842 and continue for 24 days. However the original plan to sell some of the prints drawings and illustrated books in large lots was altered so the contents originally proposed for the seventh and eight days of the sale were withdrawn recatalogued in smaller lots and sold later. As many as 7 editions of the catalog are known. This edition includes descriptions of contents through day 24 omitting days 7 and 8; the 6th day concludes with lot 160 omitting the Waldegrave manuscripts originally lots 161- 187. It does not include the "Names of purchasers and the prices" sometimes found on 58 pages at the end. Inscription on p. xxi dated Jan. 7 1855 by John Robinson who relates taking nuts from the chestnut trees at Strawberry Hill said to have been planted by Horace Walpole at the time of the sale and planting the resulting trees in Kinnington Park. Part of the last line of the inscription was lost when the pages were trimmed during the later 19th-century rebinding. Robinson's name is also written on the front board. He is identified by Sotheran as Sir John Charles Robinson 1824-1913. with documents from the 2002 sale of the catalog by Henry Sotheran London. Gift inscription on front free endpaper from Guy Lacy Schless to Nancy Schless 2002. In Very Good- Condition: boards are stained; upper righthand corner of portrait dampstained; occasional foxing including portrait and title page; occasional soiling.‎

Speckled white paper over boards with gilt-stamped cover title; red leather spine title with gilt-stamped spine title. Plain white slipcase. One of a limited edition of 200 copies on Van Gelder Zonen handmade paper printed in March 1911. The catalogue lists 135 books autographs manuscripts portraits and other Popeana which appeared in an exhibition held at the Grolier Club in early 1911. Illustrated with lovely collotype plates. Book is in Very Good Condition: paper over spine has separated but is archivally repaired; spine is sunned and boards are darkened; pages and plates are clean and crisp. Slipcase is in Fair Condition: separating along upper and lower joints; small sections lacking from both ends; rubbed and lightly soiled.‎

Color illustrated wrappers; imprint inside front wrapper. Unpaginated; wrappers included in page count. No date of publication; Stecher issued this at least twice. The taller version 35 cm. with the blue-framed front wrapper is probably the 1916 printing. This version is shorter 27 cm. with a grey-framed front wrapper and is possibly the 1919 printing. Story told in verse of young Teddy Malleen and his dream of a trip to the North Pole in his flying machine. He learns that Santa can't get the eight reindeer to eat anything but Christmas greens. Santa asks Teddy to tell children to put their Christmas greens outside their door after the holiday to that Santa and the reindeer can carry them away to eat. Each page contains verse and illustration; some illustrations are multicolor and some red-and-blue. Charmingly illustrated by Margaret Evans Price. In Very Good- Condition: wrapper detached from text block and separating along spine for 8 cm. from tail; small chip along lower edge of front wrapper; back wrapper lacking both lower corners not touching illustration; lightly creased along spine and at corners; text block is solid; text and illustrations are clean and bright.‎

Possibly the most successful play to come out of the very successful collaboration of Guy Bolton and George Middleton and the second of their plays to become a silent movie. Unfortunately as a film it was hampered by the presence of Maron Davies in the title role of Eva. When the play arrived in Philadelphia however Eva was played by Molly McIntyre. The remainder of the cast was: Berton Churchill Maria Namara Philip Tonge Diantha Pattison May McCabe John thorn Arnold Lucy William Boyd and Percy Waram. In Very Good- Condition: creased; several tears of 1 cm. or less without loss; browning; clean and complete.‎

Undated but about 1950. The store was located at 256 Prado St. "next to the Pan American Airways Co." and sold cigars liquors perfumes Cuban novelties and alligator goods. Specific mention was made of Cognac Pellison 1883 and El Rico Habano cigars. Two thirds of one side contained Spanish translations of English phrases of use to tourists: "We want to have a good time; Where are the cabarets; Give me a kiss. Where is a mail box" The back contains recipes for frozen banana daiquiris and frozen ron daiquiris. A very scarce piece of pre-Revolutionary Cuban ephemera. In Very Good Condition: lightly creased; slightly chipped at ends of one fold; clean and intact.‎

This is the program for the Nov. 19 1924 performance of "Anna Pavlowa" with Laurent Novikoff Alexandre Volinine Hilda Butsova and others. They performed Don Quixote Novikoff/Minkus with Pavlova dancing Kitry and Dulcinea and seven Divertissements including Pavlova in her most famous role the Swan Fokine/Saint-Saens. The program includes many advertisements for Philadelphia businesses some of them illustrated. The advertisements include: a Thanksgiving performance at the Academy of Music by Paul Whiteman and his orchestra with a photograph of the orchestra; and competing dance studios led by two former Denishawn dancers Jerrie Meyer and Sara D. Ferris. Also contains an article by the composer and Chautauqua performer Clay Smith about the origin of the word "jazz" tracing it back to western mining town honkytonks where he played 30 years earlier a version of this article appeared in Etude magazine in 1924. In Very Good Condition: wrapper is lightly soiled; staples are rusting; otherwise clean and tight.‎

Former owner's name at head of front wrapper: Wm. B. Schmid. On the front of the wrapper is a well-done pencil drawing of a male dancer in an Eastern costume. The program includes many advertisements for Philadelphia businesses some of them illustrated. The advertisements include: the Talking Machine Co. offering Victrolas; the Rosenbach Galleries; Stetson Hats; Newman Normal School of Dancing; recordings of Tito Schipa by Pathé Phonograph; and W.S. ‎John Wanamaker unknown Philadelphia: John Wanamaker 1920. Good . 2 cards 10 x 6.5 cm. Two different designs. "John Wanamaker Philada." embossed in small letters along lower edge. Avocado Lodge was a summer house built in Sea Girt N.J. by Philadelphia Quaker Elliston P. Morris. After his death in 1914 his daughter Elizabeth Canby Morris inherited Avocado which was sold in 1947 after her death. These two cards on which the name of the house has been misspelled Avacado were possibly produced by John Wanamaker as samples illustrating two different designs. Undated but possibly around 1920. In G-VG Condition: one card is slightly soiled; the other card is more heavily soiled with a small green stain impacting part of the printing; no writing or tears on either card.‎
