Top page edges gilt. The charming tissue-guarded frontispiece by Gordon Ross is also printed on tissue. Some unopened pages. The weather-related quotations are arranged by month with a small illustration or head piece related to that month's astrological sign at the head of each page. The title page and other front matter and the quotations by month are printed within a green border. The 23 pages of interleaved material numbered i-xxiii are printed within a red border and inserted between the months with the 23d page following December. The interleaved material concerns weather-related items; for example that between February and March is about umbrellas. This charming book is particularly notable as one of the earliest works with typography designed by John Henry Nash the renowned San Francisco typographer and printer. In Very Good Condition: corners are rubbed through; paper separated along back joint and for 8 cm. from tail along front edge of spine; light red stain on front cover along spine for 6 cm. up from tail; pp. 47 and 48 opened carelessly; lacking box as is common. With very nice penmanship most of the time this notebook-style diary begins "1867 5th Month 6th." and then proceeds to detail the daily activities of this charming young man R.B. HAINES Jr. we estimate to be about 10 or 11 years old given the amount of time he spends fishing and playing in the barn balanced with his responsibilities through until October 1868. References to keeping and tending pigeons gardening building a chicken coop greenhouse growing pepper mint catnip flowers tomato and preparing for market and visiting friends and family are all noted. Travels include Burwood Miltown Westown Wilkes Barrie. There are also references to his brother Cappy Caspar going to boarding school Uncle Doctor and Aunt Lilly Uncle Bacon Aunt Hackers Cousin Samuel Morrice visiting the Wyoming Valley Monument where "a small 'car' with dwarfs came by and they were showing off why they were small to make money" "tryed to make part of a steam engine" and playing croquet trying to fix the mowing machine. This diary includes a letter and envelope written to his brother Casper signed with initials that was found in the book.Truly superb look at the world of a young Civil War era youngster who appears to be having a great life in pioneer Pennsylvania.
