Alas this example although exquisitely bound & clearly intended for the carriage trade has condition problems: fr. hinge almost completely split with some pulling at tail of spine moderate wear & scuffing with minor foxing to some sheets make this an otherwise very good copy - with the split it is best described as good condition & surely deserves being placed in the hands of a qualified restorer. The plates are all in lovely clean condition & are beautifully rendered. Certainly this is the handsomest Groombridge Burns we have offered in more than 30 years. The Union general who gave us "sideburns" experienced victories in East Tennessee and North Carolina and managed to outwit General John Hunt Morgan and his raiders but defeats in the Battle of Fredericksburg and the Battle of the Crater caused him to resign; he was later elected governor and then senator of Rhode Island. Usual hurried "Yours truly / A.E. Burnside" on an irregular-shaped 4" X 1" slip n.p. n.y. Very good. Upper left and upper right corners clipped not affecting text; several inoffensive pin holes in blank area at left. A nice example and accompanied by a superb 7�" X 10�" steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portrait of Burnside in uniform within an oval shape this set within a rounded-corner rectangle. Engraved by H. Wright Smith. undated but likely of 1860s vintage and bearing Burnside's facsimile signature beneath. Very good. unknown

Montreal: Canadian Geographical Society 1934. Volume 8 - Volume 15 bound in 4 volumes one per year. Volume size varies slightly because size of magazine changed. Index to contents at beginning of each volume. Many black and white photographs line drawings and maps and a few colour plates. They were formerly shelved at the Windsor Ontario and/or Walkerville now Windsor public library and 1935-1937 bear the stamp of the Bookshelf Bindery Ridgetown Ontario. Leatherette spines with gilt lettering maroon cloth covered boards 1934 1935 and 1936 bound without original paper covers; 1937 has covers intact except January. The bindery respected the weight of the contents and did an extremely solid job of binding which is still very firm and tight. Some edge wear and corner bumping edges of some pastedowns show minor biodamage on volume 12 there is also very light damage to fep. Tear to frontispiece and title page of November 1936 title page and another small tear in same issue has been repaired by the library apparently with acid-free materials three cheers for the librarian!; has part of page 352 excised. Few other edge tears unrepaired noticed; corner of Jan 1937 frontis. missing despite library repair. Articles of interest include a feature on H. M. King Edward VIII's visit to the Canadian Memorial at Vimy Ridge Dec. 1936; the coronation of George VI July 1937; articles on Inuit and Ojibway peoples; traditional life in Quebec; Oberammergau Passion Play February 1934; Canadian postage stamps September 1936; Batoche reminiscences by a veteran of the Metis/Canada conflict and a study of the conflict with sketches by Jefferys; Acadia; and much more.
