1917. Very Good . 1 handwritten letter 2 sheets from Sergeant Horace H. Cornell American Base Hospital #10 "Somewhere in England" to his friend Stacy B. Brown Newtown Pa. In April 1917 the British Army requested medical assistance from the United States for the British Expeditionary Force in France and consequently the American War Department asked the American Red Cross to mobilize six base hopsitals which sailed in May 1917. Sgt. Cornell was part of Base Hospital No. 10 organized by the Pennsylvania Hospital which left Philadelphia on sailed May 19 1917 on the St. Paul and arrived in England on May 28; on June 12 1917 it took over No. 16 British General Hospital in Le Treport France where it remained until it ceased to function at the end of Feb. 1919. Cornell had become a pharmacist in 1895 and after returning from the war he returned to that profession in Newtown Pa. With the stamped and postmarked envelope and a postcard of Blackpool Eng. which Cornell compares to Atlantic City. He also reflects on Decoration Day and the "Few remaining Old Timers of 1861." In Very Good Condition: letter is folded; one fold in each sheet is just starting to tear; letter and postcard are clean; envelope is slightly soiled. <br/><br/> unknown
