1848 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT ALMANAC AND JOURNAL CATCHALL OF A GLOUCESTER MASSACHUSETTS FISHERMAN
GLOUCESTER MASSACHUSETTS. Good. 1848. On offer is a captivating small notebook with entries dating in 1847 and 1848. It appears to have been written by E.A. Spofford as this name appears several times in the booklet. The Spofford family was prominent in the early history of Essex County and Gloucester MA. It contains notes doodles and music scores. Measuring 7 in by 4 in this little paper volume is in good shape. Although the entries are few they record that Spofford was a fisherman likely working out of Gloucester MA. "This day commencing with a fair wind but very light; run up to the Seal Is. Line and hove to for mackerel and found none and from there we run West until night and then it come on night with rain. Squally and we heaving to under two reefs for And so ends this day and night" Sept 25 1848 "�this day commencing with a fresh breeze from the North and we run from Thatchers Island 15 or 20 miles and hove to and then bore away and run into Gloucester so ends this day" Sept 26 1848 �"this day commencing with a fine breeze from the SWsouth west we stood off to Middle Bank so ends this twenty four hours." Sept 27 1848. There are several verses or poems on some pages and 7 pages of music score 5 identified. This is a fascinating little booklet that gives a tantalizing peek into the life of a mid-19th century Gloucester fisherman. Black-and-white illustrated frontispiece � showing Windsor Castle with tissue guard � which shows browning and foxing. The text shows numerous black-and-white illustrations quarter page half page and full page � steel etched plates illustrations. Dark red coloured cloth covered boards with black coloured decoration and embossed titles to the front panel and gilt coloured titles and black coloured decoration to the back strip. Blind stamped illustration to the rear panel. The title says it all � a quick sketch of English history to approximately 1820 and there is a small section at the rear dealing with the social history of England. On the half title page there is an inscription stating "With the Author's Compliments". The book is showing its age. Softening and rubbing of the back strip edges with bumping fraying and rubbing of the book corners and rubbing of the lower book edges. The panels show flecking along with some rubbing. Browning and foxing of the text block edges. Offset tanning marks and foxing to the endpapers with age toning and the occasional foxing spot or mark to the pages. The front hinge has cracked with the underlying webbing is visible this has also occurred between pages 98 to 107 and consequently the pages are slightly loose. Gift inscription to the free front endpaper and another member of the family's name to the top left hand corner of the free front endpaper. Size: 4to 9�" - 12" tall. 5 VI - VIII 1 2 - 232 pages. 1871 HANDWRITTEN DIARY: S.S. GERMANIA Travel Diary of an Outspoken Opinionated Young Man
Springfield Minnesota MN S.S.GERMANIA. Good. 1871. Full-Leather. On offer is a wonderful early travel/steamship diary for 1871. The diary was handwritten by we believe E. Alvord of Springfield Minn. a young very outspoken man to record his trip to Europe while traveling on board the steamship "Germania'. The first part of the diary 16 pp are handwritten miscellaneous notes. One rather interesting note: "Nov. 23 Milton Hull in 188 Deen St. Cooks Vanderbilt House." The voyage starts May 23rd when he begins recording his trip from leaving the harbor on board the ship in Europe and on his way back home aboard the ship "China" until September 12th 1871. In total there are 93 days worth of handwritten adventures. The diarist did not hold back; he didn't seem to like the places he visited or the people too much and at one point he seems to have a problem with some Jewish folks. Here are some snippets; "Left Hoboken 15 minutes to three. Sent out hats overboard amid the shouts of the crowd. At 4:40 discharged pilot awful hungry�.Out of sight of land fair wind making 12 � knots hungry. Fear we have got beat as we haven't got in a 2nd cabin. The captain is a gentleman polite and kind. Dutch babies are thick!.The weather is beautiful. Company pleasant for one sailing out on the boundless ocean. So vast reminds me of the summer of Dr. Taylor on "loneliness.".Heavy fog on the banks a dull stupid day wish I was home. No service on board which I don't like! Have been up on the bridge with the ladies�.A very slow steamer which together with the German style of cooking makes it quite tedious�Arrived at Plymouth at 9 pm. I feasted 1st time since leaving home. Had quite a nice piece of roast beef and some ale which I relished highly. Awful English funny people so concluded yet kind to us�.Visited St. Paul church. Climbed to the top of it 424 feet high. Saw the tomb of Wellington and Nelson. Also attended a funeral there of a daughter of one of the Arch Deacons. Leave London for Belgium tomorrow glad to get away�.Oh Germany is the most lovely place to live. Music seems to be a passion and the people are so civil. Thus cannot help liking them but with all this pleasure I think of home yes yes�.Good Bye old Vienna. Beautiful city and lovely music. Arrived at Lulgough and went to the circus with Gen Spinner of U. S. Treasury and Mrs. Three ladies got terribly wet jolly time�.Sailed from Liverpool today at 4 O'clock. A full compliment of passengers and all seem delirious to get to good old America once more. Some Chinese on board bound for China. Wonderful isn't it going to China by the way of N.Y�.We are getting on nicely passed a steamer of the Union Line which sailed two days before and now we are coming on a ship going the same way as we�." Mysteriously he stops writing before he gets home curious given he was very faithful with his writing before this. The diary is a black leather diary with a beautiful deep blue lining that also has wonderful scalloped pockets. Pittsburgh PA. Fair. 1897. Original Cloth. Complete Hand-Written Course Notes for PHYSIOLOGY. Original owner's name address date on the inside front cover of this notebook of lined paper. "E. Craighead Pittsburgh PA 1897." Notes are bound in a board covered notebook 5.5" x 9". 89 pages. Includes 17 drawn illustrations by the student. 8 items have been tipped in including a booklet titled: Observations of the Brain Observations on the Sheep's Heart and other pages from medical pamphlets of the day. E. Craighood was likely a student at Fifth Avenue High School in Pittsburgh when he or she took these notes. The notes cover basic physiology from cells blood bone and muscle to more advanced body organs such as the heart lungs nervous system and stomach. Six of the 17 illustrations are in color and show more complex body functions such as eye-sight the circulatory system and how food is absorbed. Craighead also describes a number of dissections she/he took part in. Condition: Covers are very worn and shaky leather spine barely holding on front gutter/hinge completely split. The inner pages are in Very Good condition one page is disbound otherwise the pages are tight bright and clean. The writing is cursive and is sometimes rather light and not easy to decipher but it is legible throughout. On offer is `Churches and Views of Stroud and Neighborhood` an exceptional relic of Stroud Gloucestershire England's historical architectural and religious buildings. This book contains numerous accounts of different churches and architectural styles used within but of exceptional importance to local researchers and historians are the many handwritten marginalia additions as well as a more concentrated and orderly section of handwritten notes at the end of the book by local writers and historians E. Hulbert and P.L. Smith. Also it should be noted that many newspaper articles from the 1930's discussing various elements of the architecture discussed as well as the people and places of Stroud have been tipped in to the text on publisher provided stubs. It appears from some of the dating that portions of hand written text were added in the 1930's as well. This is an extremely scarce and interesting historical account of a vast and culturally rich area of Europe.
