‎1910 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A TEENAGE MASSACHUSETTS GIRL ON A GRAND TOUR OF ENGLAND AND A SAD WITNESS TO THE FUNERAL OF ONE KING TO THE PROCLAMATION OF ANOTHER‎

‎ENGLAND GREAT BRITAIN BROOKLINE MASSACHUSETTS MA. Good. 1910. Full-Leather. On offer is a delightful 1910 travel diary handwritten by a teenage American girl Eleanor Huntington Lovett b. 1893 who spent nearly a year in England with her parents traveling there on the fabled S.S. Minnetonka of the Atlantic Transport Line. Research suggests she is grand-daughter as one on-line source provides that "George Sydney Lovett whose first wife was Caroline de Beelen. Their children were Louise D. Lovett never married; Charlotte Lovett never married and a son H W Lovett who had four children Mrs. Arthur D. Whitcomb of Brookline Mass. Miss Eleanor Lovett of Brookline Mass. Louis de Beelen of Princeton NJ. and Norman F. Lovett of NYC." Thusly Eleanor is a descendant in the bloodline of Baron Frederick Eugene Francois de Beelen de Bertholff. Eleanor does a great job in a cultured hand of giving us the grand tour of her trip. She details each particular place where they stayed; London Isle of Wight Salisbury Exeter Devonshire Cambridge and Windsor; all the tourist sites: castles museums and Stonehenge but the family especially loved churches and she made a list of the 30 or so they visited while there drawing a cross beside the churches at which she actually attended services. Of particular interest to collectors and historians of the era this family was in England when King Edward died and they were present at the king's funeral procession. Other activities described include tennis croquet and sailing. She also describes a trip taken to England with just her father a few years later but these entries are much more abbreviated. She has pleasant handwriting and serves her travel narrative up in week-long to month-long-or-more summaries of her experiences. Here are some snippets: "One afternoon we drove over Salisbury Plain to Old Sarum and Stonehenge. Old Sarum is very interesting and very large but the 'excavations' of it have just begun. Very little of Stonehenge now remains in comparison what it once probably was but the Altar Stone the Slaughter Stone and the Hele Stone all remain as well as a number of the Stones of the Inner Circle. On the longest day of the year the sun rises over the Hele Stone and shines on the Altar Stone." "On the 6th of May we heard of King Edward's death and on the 8th we heard King George V proclaimed King from the Guildhall and the Cathedral Close." "We spent three days with cousin Frederick who took us on the 20th to see King Edward VII funeral procession--a most wonderful sight. Nine kings were present and huge crowds lined the route." Front section has 3 full-color pages and eight more 2-color pages. A 20" x 14" foldout map of the world glued to the inside back cover. A handwritten inscription on the first page reads: "Eleanor Huntington Sovelt from Cousin Julie Christmas--1910." Diary measures approx. "5" x 6.5." ‎1939 ORIGINAL ECLECTIC AND FASCINATING SCRAPBOOK OF AN ARTISTIC AND POETIC YOUNG WOMAN'S ROAD TRIP ACROSS THE UNITED STATES TO THE FAMOUS NEW YORK WORLD�S FAIR‎

‎PORTLAND OREGON ACROSS AMERICA NEW YORK CITY NYC. Good. 1939. On offer is the extraordinary scrapbook and journal of Eleanor Rebehl a young woman who travels from Portland Oregon to New York City for 1939 World�s Fair. The scrapbook contains many black and white photographs taken with skill postcards and maps from across the United States amateur impressionistic drawings by Eleanor herself and detailed accounts of her activities and thoughts throughout this incredible trip. The scrapbook is entitled �Summer 1939� and is subdivided into �Bicycle and boat trip with Beepske - 4th July week� and �To New York and World�s Fair motoring with Mother & Dad month of Aug. last week July.� Eleanor is obviously very deeply in love with art as each city her family stops in is accompanied by a trip to the local art museum or gallery. There are pages of description of artists and their artworks accompanied by Eleanor�s flowery prose in approval or dislike. She also seems to be quite fond of education as she speaks at length of the �Cathedral of Learning� in Pittsburgh and also includes a number of education related items in the scrapbook. This first section of a bicycle trip with her friend �Beepske� is only six pages long. It contains a number of photographs each one with a small description under it e.g. �4th July� �Dismantling our cabin� �Leaving Fenton�s� �Finis - of a perfect trip�. It also contains a brief description of the whole trip: �Boat - Portland - Astoria at night. Cycle - Astoria - Seaside in rain. After 12 mi. got a ride in a trailer full of crabs. Stayed in seaside with Mrs. Fenton first nigth and in a cabin for 4 days after. Came home in sunshine but first cycled the full 25 mi. To the Astoria boat. The �New York Trip� section takes up the rest of the scrapbook. The first page of the book is the poem �The Desolate Field� by William Carlos Williams written out in Eleanor�s cursive handwriting. Above the poem is a drawing by Eleanor. Eleanor is very poetic in her descriptions of sights seen and places travelled. She writes often in metaphor and simile and is very fond of poetic exasperations. �Phoebus! Lost is the sun�. The first day Eleanor and her parents travel from Portland to Boise Idaho. She writes: �By afternoon passed in hot sun though fields of shining wheat with pale dry tumbleweed rolling over it & the stubble of fields a hard hot wind spiraled into trails of dust pink everywhere.� The second day they go on to Kemmerer Wyoming. Describing Wyoming she writes �and now mid-afternoon we�ve ridden for miles and miles over great sand-dunes covered with sage. On they go to Nebraska and then to Iowa. �Our evening in Iowa was an exciting one. All day I�d seen translucent tufted rose clouds dappled gray in the distance which looked as if they might hold some strange vision.� �A cup flew from the window and shattered on the floor. With the diminishing of the storm sleep - vision!� From Iowa they go onto Illinois Indiana Ohio West Virginia and on the 7th day out of Portland they come to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Eleanor takes a number of photographs of the countryside which she eventually pastes into the scrapbook. There are also a number of drawings both full page sized and doodle sized of her surroundings. Eleanor takes particular delight in Pittsburgh visiting the Carnegie Museum and the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh. At the Carnegie Museum Eleanor notes the Japanese artists she sees and comments on each one: �Hokusai - crude� �Hiroshige - personality-color-sprightly.� The Cathedral of Learning is a �place for education built with the beauty of a Gothic cathedral.� A large 23 page book about the �Classrooms in the Cathedral of Learning� is included after this section. From Pittsburgh the family moves onto Philadelphia. Eleanor visits the Philadelphia Museum where she sees paintings by Duchamp Renoir Picasso Poussin Lipchitz �I love his work� Chirico Dufy �oh everybody! And i had 20 minutes to see all these wonders and the intricacies of the period rooms in the museum.� Finally they reach New York City. This section begins with four drawings by Eleanor one of �a N.Y. skyline draw from the �Boat to Statue of Liberty�� and three �From Empire Bldg.� She writes �Today we went under the Hudson River through the large white-tiled tunnel and arrived in N. York. Stopped at Wall Street for the first sensation of looking up a sky-scraper - a dizziness almost comparable to looking down a great distance.� The family soon starts sightseeing going to the Statue of Liberty Rockefeller center the Empire State Building. Many pages are taken up by Eleanor�s observations of artists and their artworks in the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum. There are pages of photographs included as well. A number of photographs are described with just the word �Getto.� They are photographs of New York City�s lower east side at the time a working class and impoverished section of Manhattan. There are also photographs of Eleanor riding the subway and sightseeing around Greenwich village. In NYC Eleanor seems to depart from her parents and stays with her friends Ede Freddie and Dot in their apartment in Greenwich Village. There are a couple of pages describing the major events Eleanor participates in during her week in the city including �shopping all over N.Y.� visiting the various art museums seeing Times Square and on the day before she leaves seeing the World�s Fair. Eleanor�s description of the World�s Fair focuses mainly on the architectural and artistic elements of the fair. She describes the W.P.A. Sciences and Beachmont Buildings the �Little Theater� playing documentary films and the �Masterpieces of Art Gallery.� Here writes more about artists such as Hieronymus Bosch and El Greco. Eleanor also describes the main World�s Fair Fountain the various attractions around the fair the fashion of the people seen and the fireworks display she sees at the end of the night. From NYC Eleanor takes a circuitous route back to Portland by herself. First she travels to Philadelphia on a Greyhound bus by herself. In Philadelphia she meets back up with her parents and they go on to Niagara Falls then into Canada. �Besides finding this a land of plenty we find the people most courteous. Daddy just had the generator or something in the car fixed by a garage man and one of the assistants unasked brought me a cool drink of water and suggested I sit in a comfortable chair in his office. So here we are reading the Toronto �Globe and Mail.� From Niagara they go onto Detroit. Of course Eleanor stops at the Detroit Museum of Art and speaks highly of artist Diego Rivera. In Detroit they also visit the Edison Institute and the Ford Motor Plant. A large map of the Ford Motor Plant and a smaller postcard of the �Edison Institute Museum and Village� are included in the book. From Detroit they move onto Chicago where Eleanor speaks pages upon pages about artists she sees in the Chicago Institute of Art. From Chicago they go to Milwaukee then Minneapolis North Dakota and Wyoming. The last entry in the scrapbook is Eleanor�s description of going through Yellowstone National Park. �There was a bubbling hot �mud volcano� slushing with grayness and steaming with odors of sulphur. Within a few nods bubbled the �Dragon�s Head Volcanoes.� It was a 5ft opening on the side of a cliff and it kept saying �gullup-goo� - and every time it uttered a secondonardy hollow �gooo� it sprayed from its mouth hot white water of sulphur.� Also contained in this extraordinary scrapbook are over 25 loose photographs of the trip undated and unlabelled and a number of postcards from places such as Minnehaha Falls Minnesota; Gettysburg Pennsylvania; and Mukwonago Wisconsin. There is also a small book of �Certified Art Prints� with their accompanying negative slides. ‎1960s SUPER ARCHIVE OF 20 LETTERS BETWEEN FELLOW ARTISTS ELENA DE HELLEBRANTH AND HER FRIEND IRENE RICE PEREIRA RENOWNED ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST POET AND PHILOSOPHER AS THEY DISCUSS ART LIFE AND RELIGION‎

‎NORTHEAST UNITED STATES. Good. 1963. On offer is a tremendous cache of letters beautifully and artistically written from and to Painter critic teacher lecturer writer illustrator Elena Maria de Hellebranth who along with her sister Bertha gained a bit of local renown in their native Hungary as well as in the Northeast United States where they lived for many decades. All the letters are either from or addressed towards Elena�s friend and confidant Irene Rice Pereira a famous American abstract painter as well as a poet and philosopher. Irene Pereira has artworks displayed many museums in America including the Whitney Museum the Museum of Modern Art the Smithsonian American Art Museum the Art Institute of Chicago and others. Elena would never achieve the level of fame and recognition as her friend Irene Pereira or even her sister Bertha de Hillebranth. This cache of letters is a tremendously interesting exchange between two artists and friends in the 1960s. Many of the letters are not dated but the ones that are are from 1963 to 1965. They deal with ideas about art poetry philosophy God and other topics of the humanities. Elena heaps praise onto Irene in almost all her letters to her repeatedly calling her a genius ending letters �God bless you and your art� and assuring Irene that her art and poetry will be forever be acclaimed. It seems that both Elena and Irene are very religious or at least God-loving women as their letters are filled with allusions to Christianity and the divine quality of art. The cache contains a total of 18 letters two telegrams and one postcard. All but one of the letters is typed and most pen marks for punctuation as well as a the letter�s signature. Only two of the letters are from Irene Rice Pereira back to Elena. One of these letters contains a postcard of an artwork by Irene. The rest of the letters telegrams and postcard are from Elena to Irene. The letters from Irene to Elena are strongly spiritual and also show a strong sense of paranoia. In one letter dated March 19th 1964 Irene writes: �I now know and I am sure of it that it i Catholicism that is the great force of the future possessing all the elemental fundamental attributes of the spiritual forces for the future form of consciousness. Also it is Catholicism that heroically endeavors to save the Form of Man against that discrepancies of the finite and infinite in Greek thought. It is only Catholicism that has the theological potentiality for the mind stabilizing the spiritual forces for the infinite abundance of reality. It would give me great hope for the future if this work could find its spiritual home.My dear dear Elena and Bertha write me. I am very careful about my telephone because the line is tapped. This is because the tastemakers in art want to maintain the status quo; that is they propose the styles for mass culture and the spiritual forces in this work runs counter to their plans.� From Elena to Irene: �Dearest Irene Always it is good to hear your voice: no matter how but it is awe inspiring to be in touch with genius. --- This is praying that you are better. It is magnanimous of you to want to help in giving my sister Bertha the prize for her tempera and india ink study to a stained glass window. The title is �A Song was Born: The Magnificat� and the approximate size is 22 X 25 outside. The Gospel tells us that Mary the Mother of God visited her cousin Elizabeth when Mary expected her Child - it may have been in the third month of her pregnancy about end of June the Immaculate Conception occurred on the 25th of Mar. Then Elizabeth joyous exclamation brought forth the Virgin Mary the ecstatical: �Magnificat song praising God!.I am most anxious to hear your verdict about her art. Bertha has a number of stained glass windows in private collections and one at the Convent of the Visitation on City Line. All my love to you as ever and you may call me an optimist but I fervently believe and KNOW that your theory will come out triumphantly and that the world will acclaim you and your art in the near future. Amen!�; �May 21st. Dear Irene Felicitations and congratulations to your wonderful exhibit have heard of it from several sources and can hardly wait to see it. I just got back from the South after an extended trip and found here your sweet note-- only too late to write you in time. Many many thanks for your thoughts and the evr so beautiful wordings. You are a poet -- too.� The items in the cache are all in good to very good condition. Some show discoloration and small tears but there are none that are not structurally intact and easily legible and readable. As mentioned the archive is made up of 18 letters two telegrams and one postcard almost all of which are typed and signed in pen. Background: Irene Rice Pereira August 5 1902 � January 11 1971 was an American abstract artist poet and philosopher who played a significant role in the development of modernism in America. She is known for her work in the Geometric abstraction Abstract expressionist and lyrical abstraction genres and her use of the principles of the Bauhaus school. Pereira's paintings and writings were influenced significantly by the complex intellectual currents of the 20th century; Elena de Hellebranth and her sister Bertha were born into a cultured upper-class family in Budapest Bertha in 1899 Elena in 1897. Their father was a lawyer and their mother a student of Franz Liszt�s last living pupil. Both sisters showed artistic potential early beginning to paint at four or five years of age. Their parents encouraged them and had the means to send them to the best art schools of the time. They studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Budapest at the Acad�mie Julian and the Acad�mie de la Grande Chaumi�re in Paris and painted portraits of European nobility. From the mid-thirties until World War II Bertha and Elena divided their time between their home in Budapest and a home on the ocean at Ventnor NJ. In 1925 they showed their work at the Nemzeti Szalon in Budapest and in 1926 they had a joint exhibition of their portraits in the US. Both exhibited their work at the Art Institute of Chicago the Brooklyn Museum of Art the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and most major museums and galleries in the US. Bertha also had exhibits at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Both Bertha and Elena were Fellows of the Royal Society of Art London and garnered numerous prizes. The de Hellebranth sisters were devout Catholics and this is evident in their many portraits of clerics and religious subjects. Bertha�s religious sculptures include not only the Patrona Hungariae which was given to St. Emery Church by the Transylvanian Franciscans in 1957 but also several now in the Museum of the American Hungarian Foundation in New Brunswick NJ as for example a statue of St. Francis and another of Christ. Elena contributed several folk style panels to the Hungarian Pavilion�s display at the 1939 New York World�s Fair while Bertha exhibited a couple of sculptures one entitled �Sleeping Shepherd�. Bertha and Elena became American citizens in the 1940�s but as Elena remarked �While we are Americans the Hungarian blood still boils through us.� And Patricia Fazekas relates "Following the 1956 Hungarian Revolution the sisters organized relief efforts for Hungarians sending much-needed shipments of clothing and food back home.� Elena settled in Atlantic City NJ. Neither she nor Bertha married. Bertha died at age 81 in December of 1980.
