Boston: Little Brown and Company. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1966. First Printing. Hard Cover. Publisher's full light green cloth gilt lettering on spine publisher's medallion gilt on cover t.e.g. red fore-edge deckle. The Magus 1966 is the first novel written but second published by British author John Fowles. It tells the story of Nicholas Urfe a teacher on a small Greek island. Urfe finds himself embroiled in psychological illusions of a master trickster that become increasingly dark and serious. The novel was a bestseller partly because it tapped successfully into and then arguably helped to promote the 1960s popular interest in psychoanalysis and mystical philosophy. This is an unmarked copy tight and square. The price-clipped dust jacket now in mylar is sunned along the top edge only and is chipped with some loss at the head and heel of the spine and has a small closed tear on the front panel. It is a compilation of the ample yet scattered harvest of books journals newspapers government documents pamphlets theses dissertations and other publications reflecting the island's literary and intellectual history as written by Puerto Ricans or by others writing about Puerto Rico and its people. Compiler Fay Fowlie-Flores has updated previously published references by including many recent works that have for decades remained dispersed among mimeographed lists government publications and books published by research institutions and commercial publishers among others. Both Spanish and English-language bibliographies and bibliographic essays have been included and a few references to important works written in other languages are also cited. The time period of the works covered ranges from 1887 to 1988 with references to a few items published in 1989. With several exceptions for very specialized fields works cited have at least 10 items. The introduction provides a thorough and fact-filled overview of the history and present status of Puerto Rican bibliographies. Three main sections containing alphabetically arranged entries focus on Puerto Rico in general; special topics; and Puerto Ricans in the U.S. Seventeen special topics arranged alphabetically by subject address diverse areas of the culture including art and music economics folklore medicine politics women and more. The annotation at each entry clarifies the subject matter and organization of the work as well as the authority of the compiler and often reflects the importance or complexity of the item. All sources cited in the volume were carefully examined for references to additional bibliographies. This sumptuously illustrated book is the first comprehensive study of London during this period of cultural artistic philosophical scientific and technological growth. Leading authorities in history art and literature explain the multifaceted aspects of this development. Their essays are supported by both reproductions and detailed descriptions of material evidence that range from artistic masterpieces through scientific and technological wonders of the age to more general historical and philosophical material. It is published to coincide with a major exhibition to be held at the Villa Hugel Essen Germany for which it will also serve as the catalogue." FOX Fontaine Talbot Jr. 1884 1964
Signature and Salutation
This pioneering American cartoonist created the syndicated comic strip "Toonerville Folks" which appeared in newspapers across the country from 1913 to 1955. Signature and salutation 1p 7" X 1 3/4" n.p. n.y. ca. 1940. Very good. Unusual: After penning "Sincerely" in brown ink the artist then pens his usual "F. Fox" signature -- which he then crosses out with two horizontal lines! Then below this he pens a large bold "Fontaine Talbot Fox Junior." Apparently an admirer requested the artist to sign his name in full -- which Fox remembered to do only after first signing his usual shortened signature. A most unusual and desirable double signature. unknown
