‎GEORGE A KIMBALL‎

‎1876 1878 1880 ORIGINAL GROUP OF THREE 3 MANUSCRIPT DIARIES HAND WRITTEN BY A CITY ENGINEER BUILDING ABOVE AND BELOW THE GROUND IN THE HISTORIC CITY JUST NORTH OF BOSTON KNOWN AS THE 'CHICAGO OF NEW ENGLAND'‎

‎SOMMERVILLE MASSACHUSETTS. Good. 1876. On offer are a group of three 3 original detailed manuscript diaries handwritten by the City Engineer of what was known as the Chicago of New England. The diaries were written in 1876 1878 and 1880. In 1876 George Kimball was the City Engineer of the city of Somerville MA. Just north of Boston Somerville was the scene of significant events in the Revolutionary War. Now it was going through a rapid industrialization that would see its population mushroom from 15000 to 90000. The meatpacking industry was so large that Somerville was dubbed 'The Chicago of New England'. Brick-making was the second largest industry. All of this growth put significant strains on the city's infrastructure and Kimball played a very important role in seeing projects advance. He works tirelessly and his diary reflects the many meetings he attended or participated in: At stable at 7. Then to Cutter St. CB City Hall at 8AM Located drinking fountain at Davis Sq at 9am at bridge with giving grades for wall for 10-11 then to Packer St 3d at the work on drinking fountain Union Sq Dinner at City Hall PM Bd of Health at 4:15 Heywood Hartness called At City Hall to meet Cmtee on Bridges at 8 PM no quorum Aug 21 A stable at 7:15 Dane St sewer City Hall at 7:45 Vine St. Sewer at Dane & Vine 8-9 to City Hall to Summit St to Bow St met with LL Towes and Dr. White and talked about nuisance on Towes land. We agreed to put off the case until Monday provided he would fire up immediately Sept 20 At St sewer Linden St catch basin visited Allen St. With Bennett at 9:30 to locate CB City Hall Central St sewer Dinner City Hall in PM At Central St sewer at 3 Meeting of Mayor and Aldermen in evening also Sewer Cmtee Nov 12 He makes reference to dropping by the FRR offices Sept 16 1876. FRR or the Fitchburg Railroad ran right through the city - it's main line is now part of the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority. Other businesses are mentioned as well such as Marine Britannic A Parker's Stone Factory and others. There are rarely any references to personal matters. He notes: . Home in evening worked on closet Dec 6 Went to City Hall in AM waiting in lot saw Father Mother and Daniel Dinner our case was reached about 3:30 Mother came Dec 11 The 4 1/2 months recorded in his diary gives and excellent picture of the work he is doing in 1876 and people he is interacting with as they work to build the infrastructure of this fast-growing city. In 1879 the pace continues unabated: To City hall at 1 P.M. State House also called on Ald. Gallinan. on 3 P.M. train on L.R.R. Arranging matters with Assistants etc. Jan 2 1879 In early January he journey to 'the West'. He noted stops in Montreal Toronto Detroit and Chicago before reaching his destination in Galesburg IL. In Galesburg he visited several churches including the "African Church". His entry for Han 13th is quite brief: At Galesburg. Having good time. Jan 13 1879 Returning home he is immediately immersed in the demands of his job: At work on Health Report all day. Meeting of Board of Health. Leave Committee at 7 P.M. Board of Ald at 7:30. Feb 3 1879 At City Hall at 8. Writing Annual Report. . Feb 5 1879 At stable at 7. George St. Sewer at 7:30. City Hall at 8 A.M. To Semple's Nursery with Mayor. Dinner At City Hall at 2. To cutters land Bdg and Arlington fixing grade of street City Hall at 4:30 Home all evening. Apr 29 1879 1880 saw no change in his pace: City Hall at 8:15. Making a Lithograph and finishing the Rules and Regulations. Dinner 1P.M. To Cedar St. sewer near Hall St. Mike crawled through the sewer and took two bricks from drain out of Hall St. . Feb 14 1880 This is a superb resource for municipal historians. It gives a clear picture of the work of a City Engineer in late 19th century America. The scale and scope of his responsibilities and the demands of his position are very clear. An engineering researcher would be able to read the first hand account of the daily demand's on Kimball's time as he juggles major projects the most important being the sewer system being installed as the city grew. These were massive projects for their time. All of this was occurring at the same time that neighbouring Boston was building its first sewer system. Overall these three diaries give an excellent look inside the urban infrastructure development process at this critical juncture in America's history.; Manuscript; 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; GEORGE A KIMBALL SOMERVILLE MASSACHUSETTS REVOLUTIONARY WAR PROSPECT HILL BOSTON MBTA CONSTRUCTION URBAN DEVELOPMENT URBAN MODERNIZATION SEWERS TUNNELS UNDERGROUND INFRASTRUCTURE BRIDGES BEANTOWN FITCHBURG RAILROAD MASSACHUSETTS BAY TRANSIT AUTHORITY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION BRICK MAKING INDUSTRIAL CITIES OF NEW ENGLAND MIDDLESEX COUNTY; AMERICAN URBAN HISTORY; URBAN PLANNING; CITY ENGINEERS IN LATE 19TH CENTURY AMERICA; SOMERVILLE MUNICIPALITY; CITY GROWTH IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURYAMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUIT CONTRAT VLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown‎

‎GEORGE A. WHEELER‎

‎1869 ORIGINAL HOMEY ROCHESTER NEW YORK AREA MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A DESCENDENT OF AN ONTARIO COUNTY PIONEER‎

‎ONTARIO COUNTY NEW YORK. Good. 1869. On offer is a late-19th century diary authored by George A. Wheeler. It measures 4 inches by 2 3/4 inches and is 100% complete. Although it is virtually complete it is quite spare in content. The name on the inside cover is George A. Wheeler. Based on the place and dates it is probably George A. Wheeler 1856-1939 a descendent of an Ontario County pioneer Benjamin Wheeler who came to the area around 1800. George studied at the East Bloomfield Academy and Lima Seminary became a successful farmer a president of the Ontario Agricultural Society a county assessor and an active member of the Universalist church in Bristol. He married Mary Belle Hicks in 1877 a daughter of Bristol farmer Benjamin Hicks they had 4 children one of whom Ralph H. Wheeler became a professor of agricultural extension at the Cornell University. They lived all their life on a family farm near East Bloomfield. The great majority of entries are simply: "I went to school". Other entries detail various chores he completed: "I plowed" Sept 1 "I drawed manure" Sep 9 "I picked apples" Oct 1. Other than references to 2 small communities there are no really personal details or general observations. The writer mentions going once to Canandaigua NY and on another occasion to Bristol NY. This suggests that he lives in the rural area south of Rochester NY. On July 5th he assuming it is indeed Wheeler took a 2 week trip to New York City. Again the entries are spare: "We went to Central Park saw a Theater in the evening".; Manuscript; 48mo - over 3" - 4" tall . unknown‎

‎GEORGE A. HENDERSON‎

‎1889 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT AUTOGRAPHED LETTER SIGNED BY SAINT JOHN NEW BRUNSWICK METHODIST CHURCH MAN WRITING THE HISTORY OF THE CHURCH TO THE SON OF A FORMER PASTOR‎

‎Unknown 1889. On offer is an interesting manuscript letter handwritten by George A. Henderson dated Saint John New Brunswick May 29 1889 regarding the Methodist Church's history in Saint John. He writes most likely to Francis Fidler of Philadelphia about the Centenary Methodist Church of Saint John completing its' 50th year of service. He says he was assigned the duty of writing about the Church since its' inception in 1839 but has decided to go back farther in time to the beginnings of Methodism in Saint John. He asks Mr. Fidler about his father who was also a Pastor if he kept a diary or any other correspondence which may have mentioned any St. John names. Mr. Henderson also writes that a great fire in 1877 destroyed almost all paper of value relating to his research and is reaching out for information to help him. It turns out Mr. Henderson was able to gather enough information to write Early St. John Methodism and History of the Centenary Methodist Church St. John N.B. This was a Jubilee souvenir. Jubilee was held for the 50 year anniversary of the Centenary Methodist Church. This was published by G.E. Day in 1890. Save for some general ageing and some splits to the fold the letter is G. Good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Manuscript. unknown‎

‎GEORGE AVERY‎

‎1884 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HAND WRITTEN BY A VERY POLITICAL RHODE ISLAND MACHINIST MERCHANT OYSTERMAN AND BASS HORN PLAYER IN THE TOWN BAND‎

‎WESTERLY RHODE ISLAND LOCUSTVILLE. Good. 1884. On offer is an excellent and detailed diary of a Rhode Island businessman who was very active in his local community. The diary is in good condition. It measures 6 inches by 3 inches. The diary entries are 100% complete. There are several cash account pages partially completed as well as some memoranda notes. His entries are for the most part quite legible. George Washington Avery II was born in Groton CT February 18 1847 and lived in what is now Westerly RI. At the time it was also known as Locustville and there are some references to that later name. He died February 15th 1928 and is buried in what is know known as Hopkinton RI once part of Westerly. He and his wife Marcia had 4 children. Avery was a businessman who ran a machining shop as well as sold items such as oysters as illustrated by these entries: ". sold 17 gallons of oysters ." Feb 16; ". worked today on 15 horse valve case and 8 horse cylinder all day . oysters 13 gallons sold quickly" Feb 23; He is a member of a Lodge - most likely a Masonic Lodge ". Installation of Officers in Subordinate Lodge. Degree work was done . " Jan 14. He also played in a community band: "Band rehearsal tonight it a good one testing big Bass horn it is much larger than all the others". He was a member of the Republican Party and was quite disappointed when Grover Cleveland D defeated the much- vilified James Blaine. "Presidential Election. Came home this morning from Wickford . went to town meeting at hotel a great deal of excitement all over the country today" Nov 4. "Reports today Cleveland is elected other reports coming in later and both Parties claim it. Great excitement in the large cities fears of riots in some its almost as bad here in the county everyone is anxiously waiting the returns" Nov5 ". it is feared the Democrats have whipped us out with the help of the righteous selfish Temperance voters anything to defeat Blaine ." Nov 8. Through his diary a reader can meet a hard-working New Englander who is committed to his family and his community. ". Staid at home tonight. Had a fair practice and bothered Marcia to my hearts content" Dec 2. His entries are rich detail and one can get a very clear look at life in late 19th century Rhode Island. It is an excellent window into the daily life of a small entrepreneur and engineer as it was this type of person who in many ways actually laid the industrial foundations of the United States. This is a terrific resource for a social historian who is focused on life in late 19th century Rhode Island or New England.; Manuscript; 16mo - over 5" - 6" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF 19TH CENTURY 1880S "GILDED AGE" GEORGE AVERY WESTERLY RI WASHINGTON COUNTY RHODE ISLAND NEW ENGLAND MACHINING IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY ENGINE DESIGN IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY LOCUSTVILLE RHODE ISLAND'S OYSTER INDUSTRY PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION OF 1884 PRESIDENT GROVER CLEVELAND'S VICTORY 19TH CENTURY ENTREPRENEURS RHODE ISLAND ECONOMY IN 19TH CENTURY SMALL BUSINESSES IN 19TH CENTURY RHODE ISLAND NEW ENGLAND INDUSTRY NEW ENGLAND ECONOMY AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUIT CONTRAT VLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown‎

‎GEORGE B. AHN‎

‎1908 - 1949 REMARKABLE ARCHIVE OF THIRTEEN 13 MANUSCRIPT DIARIES HANDWRITTEN BY RAILROAD EXECUTIVE EVANGELICAL REVIVAL CHURCH SERVICE ATTENDEE SHREWD POLITICAL PROGNOSTICATOR AND FATHER OF FIVE‎

‎ELMIRA NEW YORK WILLIAMSPORT PENNSYLVANIA. Very Good. 1908. On offer is a remarkable archive of thirteen 13 manuscript diaries handwritten by railroad executive George B. Ahn of Elmira New York and later Williamsport Pennsylvania. Collectors and historians of Pennsylvania and New York State railroad Americana will find a treasure trove of details in these diaries spanning forty-one years between 1908 - 1949 1908 1909 1910 1911 1912 1913 1914 1918 1920 1924 1925 1926 and 1949. The reader will see a man and his family mature before one's eyes. Most of the diaries are 80-90% full with about 4 years half full but overall George does a fantastic job relating the events of his life in specific detail except for his own age! We know from the first diary in 1908 his wife is 30 years old and then we learn they were married in 1902. It would appear since there is one child born well prior to the wedding Helen could be his second wife the first having died or been a divorce within the last ten months. Local historians and researchers will undoubtedly discover the prior events with some small effort. The books are small format diaries but George writes in tiny perfectly legible script typical of an engineer. His life breaks down into four areas: family Church politics and the Railroad. We believe P. and E. Railroad is his specific employer but he travels so many numbered trains and lines on a daily basis it is hard to be certain. Living in Elmira he often takes daily trips to Baltimore Buffalo Harrisburg Williamsport and as in the case of emergencies he would go to the far reaches of Pennsylvania as he did when the Austin Dam burst. The family is large and growing: wife Helen nee McClosky b. Jan.28.1878 married in Dec. 27th 1902 her sick mother their five kids Harold Daniel b. Feb. 3rd 1902 Georgie Bertha b. Oct. 25 1897 and baby Helen Elizabeth b. Nov.22 1907 Eloise b. Jan. 30 1913. Executive level meetings the Austin Dam disaster clean up Charlie Snyder crushed under train wheels passenger train inspections heads investigations into loss and damage claims worked on instructions for New Car Distribution Blanks and revised Loading Instructions other investigations and committees are all matters for George's attention. Then there is the Church. If George is not working or dealing with family matters he is attending Church Revival Services going to meetings for different missions appealing to 'seekers' going to lectures etc. In the 1949 diary we learn that George preaches almost exclusively most certainly long retired as he must be in his seventies by then. Lastly there is politics which George has a keen interest: he notes on a mayoralty race: "Wolfe being elected by landslide of Republican votes. Unfortunately he was backed by the base elementWolfe is a stock broker - gambler." George also gives a tremendous amount of family and area history and genealogical information noting births deaths and other local events. Online research provided this following interesting note that validates the claim further research is required to flesh out the missing years of this interesting gentleman and his family. ONLINE REFERENCE: "D. F. Ahn and wife of Williamsport spent Monday evening with Mrs. Sallie Roath in this place. Mrs. Ahn was formerly Miss Jane Billow of this place. She with her husband formerly resided in Sunbury but have moved to the above city to take charge of the orphaned children of their son Geo. B. Ahn who has been promoted to the General Superintendent's office of the P. & E. Railroad." ‎GEORGE BAMBACH HAWES‎

‎1889 CHARMING GROUP 17 OF ORIGINAL LATE 19th CENTURY LOVE LETTERS HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG AMERICAN LIVING IN CHILE AND WOOING AN ILLINOIS GIRL ALL THE WHILE DESCRIBING LIFE IN SOUTH AMERICA‎

‎CONCEPTION CITY CHILE. Good. 1889. On offer is a super rather intriguing group of letters 17 w/10 covers written by a young American gentleman living in Chile circa 1889 whose name we conclude was George Bambach Hawes as evidenced by a letter addressed to a Myra S. Curtis. Hawes apparently died in 1917 and this letter typed in Spanish is from Elena Bambach Hawes. All letters except for three are from George and dated 1888 and 1889. The letters are quite lengthy some five or six pages several double sided. George lived in Conception City Chile working for Banco de Concepcion as a bank teller. All of George Bambach Hawes letters are written to Miss Myra S. Curtis of Mendota Illinois. Apparently he was infatuated with her and considered her his companion. There is mention of romance but also some travel in these letters some contain great descriptions of life in Chile. It seems his family mother father and sisters were already living in Chile. John writes that he should just "take" 8000 USD from the bank he works for and run away with her." In another very extensive and detailed five page letter he mentions arriving on steamboat right in the middle of a cholera out break in Valparaiso Chile that killed three thousand people. Along with the letters is an unusual letter from a Giden Giroux one of the owners of the Giroux consolidated Mines in Mexico. This is addressed to another woman named Eugina Kinney. There are two letters from his brother that are also an interesting read. He was living in Mexico and being paid in gold for what I couldn't figure out. He mentions a friend living in the Mississippi Bottoms whom he said "made a mistake of marrying a negro woman" and writes about his life. Here is a snippet: April 20 1888 Conception City Chile We arrived the 14th of March at 2 pm The very first thing I knew was that the cholera was prevailing there and that in less than three months more than thee thousand persons had died of it. Of course I was very frightened. The same afternoon I went on shore with the Capt. and the customs house officers in a little steamboat. Next day I met some of my friends who live in Vina del Mar. a very pretty little place about four miles from Valparaiso. We stopped there near a fortnight amusing ourselves very gay by with picnic parities and everything else you may imagine. While we have no direct evidence we believe he was related to this man: from Biblioteca del Congreso Nacional de Chile website: Samuel Bambach Hawes: "He was born in 1865. Son of Bernardo Bambach and Matilde Hawes. Married to Rosa Estvez Gazmuri with 3 children. He studied at the University of Chile Faculty of Law graduated as a lawyer on May 29 1890. He practiced his profession in Concepcin Talcahuano and Tom. Deputy for Concepcin Talcahuano Lautaro and Coelemu in the periods of 1903-1906; 1906-1909 and 1909-1912. During his time as a parliamentarian he joined the Legislation and Justice Commission; the Elections; the one of Internal Police and presided over the Commission of External Relations Militant of the Radical party. He died in Santiago on September 23 1911." Local historians and researcher can no doubt confirm or deny.; Manuscript; 4to - over 9" - 12" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; CHILE SOUTH AMERICA GEORGE BAMBACH HAWES ELENA BAMBACH HAWES CONCEPTION CITY CHILE CHOLERA BANCO DE CONCEPCION AMERICANS IN CHILE AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUIT CONTRAT VLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown‎

‎1830s - 1870s ORIGINAL MASSIVE ARCHIVE OF MANUSCRIPT DIARIES 50 AND HANDWRITTEN LETTERS 65 DETAILING THE LIFE AND LOVES AND RELIGIOUS DEVOTIONS OF NEW JERSEY AND NEW YORK CITY COUSINS‎

‎MIDDLETOWNE NEW JERSEY MONMOUTH CTY NEW YORK CITY. Good. 1830. On offer is a fascinating massive archive of letters notes diaries and some ephemera of particular interest to researchers historians and collectors of mid 19th century New York City and New Jersey and religion of the day. The archive is made up of two 2 main components: 1 approximately 50 diaries and notebooks and 2 approximately 69 letters of inter-family correspondence dated from the 1830s through to the late 1870s they are mostly by and between three people; James Hoagland of Jersey City New Jersey; Lavinia Murray of NYC and her brother George C. Murray of Middletowne New Jersey. Lavinia is the main recipient receiving letters though some are in her hand from her brother George her cousin and one day husband James Hoagland her mother and father and some cousins and friends. The diaries are unusual and unique as the author George Crawford the books are unsigned but the handwriting is assuredly the same as George's letters to Lavinia kept 'double' books; one set of books are diary like entries describing his life and times travel and business dealings but also a real picture of New York City of the era as George was in love with the city and he seemed to have a number of real estate holdings perhaps he moved a lot that he wrote from many different addresses. He would delight in describing the color of the sun as it came up over a particular street or intersection. George also must have had a touch of obsessive compulsive behaviour as is evident in his writings. He is incredibly detailed and a keen observer. The other side of the diaries is his obsession with religion. He keeps a diary of his devotions the many different Churches he goes to the sermons and lectures heard the speakers . He expostulates in essay form and writes detailed descriptions of the sermons and sometimes point form notes. We have never seen anything quite like the breadth and depth of this man's writings. The books themselves are mostly coverless or perhaps handmade mostly 8 x 5.5 inches with a few smaller and a couple larger. Some are about 25 - 27 pages some a few pages and the odd one or two are triple thick but there are approximately 1000 pages from 1851 to 1881. Historians and researchers will find a treasure trove of Christian activity thought and devotion regarding New York City in this group. This archive was once held by Milton Wyatt of NYC a long time ephemera dealer in Greenwich Village NYC and was purchased from his estate. HISTORICAL NOTES from several online sources: 1 Murray George Crawford Ideal Citizen Legislator. The late George Crawford Murray of Middletown Monmouth County New Jersey was one of those men whose lives and characters are of inestimable value as exemplars of what worthy lives should be. His ambition was ever along the worthiest lines and his whole life was devoted to the highest and best ideals. His nature was of singular sweetness openness and sincerity. He had a profound knowledge of human nature and was ever thoughtful for the welfare of his fellow beings. His family which was of Scotch descent was resident in New Jersey from about the middle of the eighteenth century. 2 Lavinia Murray born December 17th 1818 died 1876 married August 26th 1847 James M.
