The subjects are often highly symbolic such as a soldier inside the letter G for "Guerra" an odalisque sleeping in the N for "Nudez" or a modern woman in the shadow of the I machinery in her hand and a train and smokestack in the background for "Industria". The only published work by Godinho whose photograph is mounted to the title page. She came from a renowned line of Lisbon calligraphers; her grandfather Manoel Nunes Godinho earned the title of "Calligrapho da Casa Real" or the royal calligrapher.
