First edition of this pioneering study of racial residential segregation in American cities by the economist who would become the first African American member of a United States presidential cabinet. Octavo original publisher's cloth. Association copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "To Henry Lee Moon with admiration and regards Robert C. Weaver 1948." The recipient journalist and civil rights leader Henry Lee Moon had worked under Weaver on Franklin Roosevelt's Black Cabinet and in this same year became director of public relations for the NAACP. Very good in a good dust jacket. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed. The Negro Ghetto 1948 was among the first comprehensive studies of racial residential segregation in the United States documenting how housing policy restrictive covenants and discrimination confined African Americans to overcrowded urban districts and setting out a program for democratic integrated housing. Its author Robert C. Weaver 1907 to 1997 was a Harvard-trained economist and a leading member of Franklin Roosevelt's informal Black Cabinet who in 1966 became the first African American to serve in a United States presidential cabinet when Lyndon Johnson appointed him the inaugural Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. The recipient Henry Lee Moon 1901 to 1985 was a journalist and civil rights activist who had worked alongside Weaver in the New Deal administration and who in 1948 published his influential study Balance of Power: The Negro Vote and began his long tenure as director of public relations for the NAACP a post he would hold for more than twenty-five years. Webb countered with the current work which is both a rebuttal of Charleton & an invaluable account of his life character and work of as Webb put it The Vitruvius of his age. See ODNB. ‎Influential British locomotive engineer executive and innovator; as Locomotive Superintendent of the London & North Western Railway Company from 1871 to 1903 his word was law and in the city of Crewe where the L. & N.W.R. operated its "Crewe Works" he was known as "The King of Crewe." Rare signed production photograph most likely a heliotype heavy stock 24" X 16" Crewe England 1891. Very good. Light even age toning except verso where acidic backing has darkened unevenly; several small archivally closed on verso edge tears; very slight waviness at some edges. This piece actually consists of three separate images tipped to the heavy 24" X 16" sheet: Center image 14" X 11½" shows this locomotive in close-up profile left side image 3½" X 11½" shows a frontal view and right side image also 3½" X 11½" shows a rear view. Titled "Eight-Wheeled Compound Express Passenger Locomotive" in large typeface below the center image with "F.W. Webb's System" below that in smaller typeface and two lines of technical statistics at the bottom "High-pressure Cylinders 15 in. diam. x 24 in. stroke. Low-pressure Cylinder 30 in. diam. x 24 in. stroke. Driving Wheels 7 ft. 1 in. diam. / Leading Wheels radial. Fixed Wheel base 8 ft. 3 in. Trailing Wheels ½ in. side play.". In the latter part of the 19th century Webb took a leading role in the development of compound locomotives -- those in which the steam operates more than one set of cylinders. The locomotive depicted here is part of the "Greater Britain" class a type of eight-wheeled express engine featuring an extra long combustion chamber and distinguished by their 7 foot 1 inch driving wheel; of these Webb designed ten models. The first of these appeared in 1891 -- and may well be the version depicted in this print. At the lower right corner above the printed text "Crewe Works 1891" Webb signs big and bold. Verso of this print bears an oval inkstamp of the L. & N.W.R. Mechanical Engineer's Office dated 30 September 1893. A superb and significant piece ideal for display. unknown‎

‎1836. Rare autograph letter signed by one of the most prominent American lawyers of the 19th century Daniel Webster written in anticipation of the opening of the American west. One page folded text in the hand of an amanuensis the letter stipulates which types of land Webster and Perkins wish the recipient Joseph R. Williams of Toledo Ohio to invest in with their $5000 speculative fund. The reads in part "Washington 16 May 1836 Dear Sir Mr. H. Perkins Esq. of Boston who is doubtless well known to you at least by character and reputation is now here. He and myself have argued to join in some investments in lands in your part of the country and we propose to place a sum in your hands for that purpose to be invested on the same terms and conditions as you invest other funds for me and for Mr. Davis. The sum which we propose to place at your disposal for this purpose is five thousand dollars; of which three fourths are to be invested for account of Col. Perkins and one fourth on my account. Of course we leave the choice of places to your discretion looking to safety and to the hopes of profit. We would not devise you to be too adventurous in regard to town lots; but if you should see a good prospect of a handsome advance in property of that kind you will embrace the opportunity so to dispose of part of lands for agricultural purposes in townships already settles and settling near to great lines of communication and taken up at Government prices cannot well fail to produce handsome returns on the capital. Still we should be very glad if you could make a lucky hit at some point where the land should soon be wanted for town purposes or where it would be met by some canal or other improvement which should enhance its value. As to the mode of remittance we have thought of no better way than for you to draw on me. I shall be in this city until the early part of Jun perhaps later and then in Boston. As commercial transactions in your quarter may enter in New York and Philadelphia your Bills on me may be made payable either at Boston or at the Merchants Bank in the city of New York or the Bank of the United States at Philadelphia. You will of course write me on the receipt of this. You will see what day shall be fixed on for the adjustment of Congress and may take it for granted that I shall be here till about that time." The spring and summer of 1936 saw the admission to the Union of Arkansas and Michigan as the 25th and 26th states respectively and the organization of the Wisconsin Territory essentially opening the American West as the next urban frontier. In near fine condition. Accompanied by an etched portrait of Webster. American lawyer and statesman Daniel Webster represented New Hampshire and Massachusetts in the U.S. Congress and served as the U.S. Secretary of State under Presidents William Henry Harrison John Tyler and Millard Fillmore. As one of the most prominent American lawyers of the 19th century he argued over 200 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court between 1814 and his death in 1852. During his life he was a member of the Federalist Party the National Republican Party and the Whig Party. During the Mexican-American War he emerged as a leader of the "Cotton Whigs" a faction of Northern Whigs that emphasized good relations with the South over anti-slavery policies. In 1850 President Fillmore appointed Webster as secretary of state and Webster contributed to the passage of the Compromise of 1850 which settled several territorial issues and enacted a new fugitive slave law. unknown books‎
