‎1942 - 1943 TWO 2 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT JOURNALS THAT SHOW TWO INTERESTING AND DIFFERENT VIEWS OF A LIFE LIVED ONE CIVILIAN ONE MILITARY BY AN AUSTRALIAN PILOT IN CANADA‎

‎ALBERTA CANADA BRISBANE AUSTRALIA RCAF TRAINING. Good. 1942. On offer are two 2 books used by J.G. Beilby of Brisbane Australia while on duty in Alberta Canada training with the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War 2. Beilby is a pilot and sergeant with the Royal Australian Air Force. The first a book entitled My Cruise with R.A.A.F is inscribed To johny Xmas 1942 Nil Desperandum. From Bill. The book obtained by Beilby in Australia lists the many cities through which Beilby travelled through. From Panama through the U.S. to Canada Scotland and finally England ending in a listing written Whitley Bay Commando. The book is over 100 pages in length but there is writing on only the first 6 pages. Beilby sails out of Brisbane Australia on June 22nd 1942 on the S.S. President Cleveland going towards Norfolk Virginia. The ship goes to Tahiti Panama Cristobal Balboa Panama Santiago di Cuba Key West finally landing in Norfolk. From Norfolk Bielby goes to Philadelphia Washington New York up to Winnipeg Calgary and then Vancouver. On the return journey Beilby leaves on the famous S.S. Queen Elizabeth operated by the Cunard line from Halifax Nova Scotia on March 10th 1943 stopping in Boston and New York before going across the Atlantic to Bournemouth London Newcastle and Whitley Bay in England. The other book smaller and more compact has a front title of Royal Canadian Air Force Diary. In this book other Beilby has written addresses and phone numbers. Near the end of the book there are pages filled with dates for Anniversariesand Birthdays of friends and family as well as a page titled Name Suggestions implying Beilbys girlfriend or wife was pregnant during his time in the RCAF service. The Cash Accounts section near the end of the book also shows over 10 war bonds bought by Beilby totalling $1250 as well as the year they fully mature. There is also a page of living expenses for the month of November that include purchases of a Jacket - $53.00 Mothers gift - $4.00 Prescriptions - $8.50 and man others. The most interesting part of the book though is the first 145 pages taken up by a tremendous amount of scientific and military information about flight. The foreword says that in COLLINS AERO DIARY the Publishers have constructed from technical literature and practical data a useful compendium on the subject of Flight. This literature and data contains everything from conversion tables to flight dynamics to Morse code semaphore color pages of maps of other countries and a tremendous amount more. The two books together produce an interesting document of a soldier in the 2nd World War. Background: John George Beilby was born in 1920 in Brisbane Australia. He was a Sergeant and pilot in Unit 21 of the Operational Training RAF during the War. He mostly likely died on April 24 1944. Flying a Wellington LN 878 of No 21 Operational Training Unit RAF he took took off from RAF Station Moreton-in-Marsh Gloucestershire on a day cross country exercise on 24 April 1944. The last known position of the aircraft was a fix which placed them 80 miles east of Hull. The aircraft failed to return to base after the exercise. Subsequent reports show that the Wireless Operator had contacted numerous stations during the trip and was well up to his job. He would have taken correct action in distress had he had time. There was no evidence to show how the aircraft became lost. From the way the plot faded suddenly there is a strong possibility that it had been shot down by enemy fighters. Subsequent searches found no trace of the missing aircraft or crew. Sgt J.G.Beilby Pilot.Following post war enquiries and investigations it was recorded in 1949 that the missing crew had lost their lives at sea.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF J.G. ‎J. H. STORER‎

‎1942 - 1949 PAIR OF TWO 2 DIARIES BELONGING TO A MARINE CAPTAIN LATER MAJOR SERVING IN GUADALCANAL AND THE HOMEFRONT WHO EVENTUALLY LEAVES THE MILITARY TO BECOME A STEELWORKER UNION MAN AND LABOR ADVOCATE‎

‎MARINE BASE QUANTICO GUADALCANAL BETHLEHEM STEEL. Good. 1942. On offer are a pair of two 2 daires that belonged to U.S. Marine Corps Captain late Major J. H. Storer. The first diary covers the years 1942 to 1944 and the second is a five-year diary covering the years 1945 to 1949. The first diary is technically supposed to be used for only one year however Storar uses single dates for entries of any or all of the years 1942 1943 and 1944. He differentiates this through the use of different color pens. The code to this is located on the front cover page: Sept. 1942 to Sept. 1943 pencil; Sept. 1943 to Sept. 1944 red ink; Sept. 1944 to black ink. It is fairly common in the months past September for all three years to appear on a single date entry. For the most part his entries in the first year of dairying are simple dealing with his day-to-day activities and news about the soldiers in his company. He also is a member of the National Sojourners an American patriotic organization of Freemasons and there are occasional entries about meetings of this group. The diary entries begin on September 7th 1942. Monday - Physical final exam for Marine Corp. Passed OK. To Statler Hotel Buffalo for Final dinner.; September 9 1942. Arrived Quantico 8:30 AM. Reported for duty assigned E Company the Training center. Vaccination: 1st Shot - Paratyphoid. 1st Shot - Tetanus.; October 19 1942. Appointed to Post Coding Board under Major H.W. Whitney. Moved to new quarters in Red cross Bldg. Capt. Storar 3 officers. 159 men. Officer of Day to-day.Appointed Senior officer on board to recommend enlisted men for promotion. For much of the year he is stationed between the Quantico Marine Base and Guadalcanal. This makes me believe he is part of the 1st Marine Division as they were the primary Marine division to take part in the Guadalcanal Campaign. January 16 1943. Inspected Company in AM and worked in Code Room in PD.; To Capt. McKee in P.M. Played 3 sets of Tennis in PM with Rus. Lt. John Ross Lt. Curt Norton transfer. Ross to New River Norton to Dallas Texas.; February 23 1943. Arrived at New River 0830. Reported to adjutant 1100. P.F. Thompson. Had noon chow with Gen. Smith. Bus fr. Jacksonville 1800 to Wilson. Sleeper fr. Wilson 0100 to Quantico.; June 10 1943. Non coms interviewed for Hazardous duty. Two summary courts. U.S.O. show in evening. Fred Astaire. The year between Sept. 1943 and 1944 are similar going between short entries of day-to-day routine activities and more detailed entries of his work. He recommends men for promotion serves on guard duty often participates on a General Court Martial referred to often just as G.C.M. conducts a number of internal investigations and participates in a number of court martials and does a number of other jobs as a captain then major of the E company. He does not participate in the invasion of Europe on June 6 1944 but he does write INVASION on the date. On June 8th he is promoted to Major.: March 23 1944. Thrus. Dot to Wash. D.C. to see Bud Hoffmans wife. Very Rainy. Guard company loses bowling to P.S. Bn.; April 22 1944. Staff Duty. Investigation of death of Pvt. Snyder USMCWR. the final entries done in black ink are from September 1944 to the end of the year: October 15 1944. Sunday. Picnic at 10.30 with Col. Henry and wife. Golf in A.M. to Skyline drive - Blue Ridge Mountains of Va. with Col. Henry 1030 to 1915.: October 17 1944. Inspected Guadalcanal with Maj. Hamblet Capt. Daley in P.M; A.M. General Court. The second diary is a more traditional 5-year diary with dedicated spaces for each years entries. It begins where the last one ends January 1st 1945. The front cover states: Major J.H. Storar U.S.M.C. Quantico Va. Classification. Post Intelligence 2162; Port Operations 9307. The entries are very similar to the previous book. Mostly day-to-day activities and occasional remarks about his troops or fellow officers. March 12 1945. Appointed to Board of Investigation with Lt. Shissen Dr. Phillips. Inspection trip to Guadalcanal area.; April 12 1945. President of U.S. Franklin Delano Roosevelt dies. Golf in P.M. 45 score. Kilmartin Daly myself.; May 7 1945. GERMAN UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER.; May 8 1945. Tuesday Dot to D.C. Routine. In Gen. Torreys office to listen to President Trumans proclamation.; August 5 1945. Sunday. Golf in A.M. to MacArthurs for water ____ in evening. Atomic Blast in Hiroshima.; August 14 1945. JAPAN SURRENDERS. General Court all day. In 1946 Storar is honorably discharged from the Marine Corps and begins working for Bethlehem Steel in Johnstown Pennsylvania. He is assigned to the Car Shop making train cars. In the years he works there there are may strikes and worker disputes at the plant. It seems as if Storar strongly supports and participates in them. He often notes the days that the shop is closed because of the strike. It seems he participates strongly in the union meetings between the workers and management. Excerpts: September 6 1946. Warned management about Strike threats.; May 16 1947. Pay check 299.50 for 2 weeks. Need raise 53.00 per month. Told new agreement to Supervisor.; December 7 1947. Hemorrhage in A.M. To bed all day and Hospital in evening.; September 28 1948. Present flag to Gold Star mothers from supervision club. Had pictures taken. Governance meetings.; November 3 1948. Landslide for Democrats. Men went home to celebrate.; November 1 1949. STRIKE OVER. Beth Steel and union. Both diaries are in very good condition. The first diary has a blue hard leather cover in very good condition and the pages show very little wear or age. The second diary has a brown soft leather cover in very good condition as well. ‎J. J. WOODWARD‎

‎1881-1883 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT LOG BOOK AND JOURNAL OF THE USS QUINNEBAUG HANDWRITTEN BY ITS NAVAL CONSTRUCTOR AS IT TRAVELS TO EUROPE TO PROTECT AMERICAN INTERESTS INCLUDING PARTICIPATING IN THE BOMBARDMENT OF ALEXANDRIA‎

‎U.S. NAVY EUROPEAN STATION ALEXANDRIA EGYPT. Very Good. 1881. On offer is a thoroughly interesting and unique ships journal from the U.S. Navy Corvette the USS Quinnebaug and handwritten by its Naval Constructor a man named J.J. Woodward. The period covered is between June 24 1881 and March 14 1883. The journal begins with the Quinnebaug being outfitted in the New York Navy Yard. It sets sail on July 14 1881 sailing across the Atlantic and reaching the Strait of Gibraltar on August 9 1881 joining the U.S. Navys European Station. The ship makes numerous European ports of call including locations in France Algeria Tunis Tripoli Egypt Turkey Greece Italy Morocco Madeira Malta Spain and Portugal. Each day there are detailed daily entries include latitude longitude weather and sea conditions. Generally these leave out observations other than simple things other than descriptions for the weather. However there are a few where Woodward remarks on ships seen in passing and a few times on purely personal things such as one entry where he writes Read articles of War at quarters. Started gris for distilling and began to distil. The most lengthy observations come when the ship is in port. The journal ends on March 14 1883 at Gibraltar. Woodward logged a total of 19957 nautical miles during his voyage. Of particular interest is that the Quinnebaug was present for the Bombardment of Alexandria on July 11 1882 where the British fleet attacked Alexandria and invaded Egypt starting the Anglo-Egyptian War and beginning the British occupation of Egypt which would last until 1956. Amazingly Woodward created a detailed illustration of this battle including ship locations and Egyptian batteries. He also illustrated subsequent battles at Kafr-Dowar and Ramleh. Several other illustrations include a gun battery and a ship cross-section. These illustrations are truly remarkable works both for their relationship to the ship itself and to the historically significant events in which the ship participated in. Woodwards engineering background is obviously evident in these sketches. After March of 1882 the log book cedes to a journal section in which Woodward inserts his Professional Notes. The journal notes begin in July of 1881 and continue until March 14 1883. The tone of these notes is much more casual and personal than the log section of the book. It is in this section that the illustrations are located. Woodward describes in much greater detail the ports he visits and the observations he makes at sea and on land. It is also here that the report from the British attack in Alexandria is written. In an almost 20 page account of the Battle Woodward describes in excellent detail what it was like at the battle the positions of the ships especially the Quinnebaug and the tactics of the British and French ships. The bombardment begins on July 11th and ends with Alexandria in flames on the 14th. During the bombardment the American ships including the Quinnebaug opened their ships up to all refugees from the city who needed shelter or medical treatment. Woodwards illustrations of a Plan A and Plan B for the The Bombardment of Alexandria are truly extraordinary pieces of work. The book concludes with 16 pages of Miscellaneous Notes at the back of the book these being more observations and personal anecdotes of the cities and ports through which the Quinnebaug travelled including Gibraltar Marseilles Arles Algiers Alexandria Cairo. The journal has 166 handwritten pages. The remaining pages in the 288 page book are blank. The condition is very good. The spine and covers show some wear and the leather has come off the spine. The binding is still very tight. The pages within show very little signs of wear and tear or any age-toning and the handwriting is easily legible with very little staining in still very dark black ink. Bio Notes: J.J. Woodward would go on to lecture at MIT and publish works on ship design. Woodward was instrumental in commissioning the Navy's first submarines; The USS Quinnebaug was a screw corvette in the United States Navy. It was completed under contract by Neafie & Levy at the Philadelphia Navy Yard She was launched on 28 September 1875 but completion was delayed due to lack of government appropriations and consequently the vessel did not enter commission until 2 October 1878 when Commander Norman H. Farquhar took command. Three of her crew received the Medal of Honor for rescuing shipmates from drowning during this period: Landsman Patrick J. Kyle at Mahn Menorca on 13 March 1879 and Seaman Apprentice Second Class August Chandron and Boatswain's Mate Hugh Miller at Alexandria Egypt on 21 November 1885. Departing Gibraltar on 9 May 1889 Quinnebaug returned to the New York Navy Yard on 17 June 1889. She decommissioned there on 3 July was struck from the Navy List on 21 November 1889 and was sold on 25 March 1891; The Egyptian Expedition in mid-1882 was the United States' response to the British and French attack on Alexandria during the Anglo-Egyptian War. To protect American citizens and their property within the city three United States Navy ships were sent to Egypt with orders to observe the conflict ashore and make a landing if necessary. British and French forces heavily damaged the city so a force of marines and sailors were landed and they assisted in fire fighting and guarding the American consulate from insurgents.
