JENNIE BACON
1886 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HAND WRITTEN BY A HARDWORKING UPSTATE NEW YORK TEENAGE GIRL
Boonville NY. Good. 1886. On offer is a very interesting diary kept by a young woman in upstate New York in 1886. Measuring 5 3/4 inches by 3 1/2 inches the slim volume contains about 150 pages including memoranda. The diary portion is 100% complete. The covers binding and pages are all in good condition. The handwriting is legible. Tucked into the diary are three newspaper clippings. These are obituaries published in the local papers. Two refer to the death of her mother in 1914. The third refers to a man who is possibly related to her by marriage. There are also 2 photographs in the diary - 1 is a family grouping and the other is a portrait of a young woman. Research confirms that the picture of the young woman is indeed Jennie Bacon. Interestingly in the same pocket that held the photographs was a folded paper package that contains a small calibre bullet casing. The flyleaf is inscribed "Jennie Bacon Layden NY Jan 4th 1886". Research establishes that she was born in 1870 in Iowa. Her family moved to Lewis County NY at some time in her early life. This makes her 16 when she began to keep this diary. She lives at home on a farm with her parents and her brother Arthur. Jennie Bacon passed away in 1949. The year opens with her attending a local school which she enjoys very much. Interspersed with her daily attendance are the many tasks that she carries out daily: "Pleasant and warm. Up at six. Washed the dishes and went to school. Had nearly all my lessons good. Knit some on my mittens. Got a certificate of vaccination today had a good time at school today. Pa went to Boonville and got the mechanic today" Jan 18 "Snowed and blowed late going to school this morning some drifts half way up the house sides. Up half past seven. Went to school had a very good time but way behind in my lessons. I wanted to stop History but Mr. Wadleigh would not let me. He lent me the history he had" Jan 21. Mid-march her schooling comes to an end and daily entries revolve mostly around the seemingly unending tasks of keeping the house: "Rained most all day. Up ten min past six. Went to school today and it is my last day this term. Felt very badly did not like to leave." Mar 19. ". Sarah and I have worked hard all day. We cleaned the parlour hall closet and cellar . I am very tired tonight" May 21. "Her entries describe cooking cleaning sewing and farm tasks such as milking making cheese and churning butter. ". Did the mornings work then I went to washing got it all out before dinner put away the wash things . ground coffee made biscuits hunted eggs sprinkled clothes in the evening set up my skirt again. I am sure tired tonight" Oct 11. This diary is very well-written and gives and excellent detailed account of the tasks and responsibilities of maintaining a home in rural America in the late 19th century. It is rich in detail. There are a great many references to local people and local places which can provide valuable cross-referencing. This would be a superb resource for local historians or researchers studying 19th century rural life in America and the role of women at that time and place.; Manuscript; 24mo - over 5" - 5" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF 19TH CENTURY 1880s GILDED AGE UNITED STATES LEYDEN NY UPSTATE NEW YORK BOONVILLE NY ONEIDA COUNTY LEWIS COUNTY JENNIE BACON GROWING UP IN RURAL AMERICA FARM LIFE SCHOOL EDUCATION SCHOOLS IN 1880s WOMEN'S STUDIES PHOTOGRAPHS AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUIT CONTRAT VLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . hardcover

Jennings Napoleon Augustus
A Texas Ranger
Chicago: R. R. Donnelley & Sons Company / The Lakeside Press. As New with No dust jacket as issued. 1992. First Edition Thus. First Printing. Hard Cover. Publisher's full brown cloth gilt lettering on spine Lakeside Press medallion gilt on cover t.e.g. Illustrated with numerous color and B&W photographs plates maps and reproductions. Eighteen-year-old Napoleon Augustus Jennings came to Rexas in 1874 and joined a special force of Texas ranger charged with border patrol under the command of L.H. McNelly. At this time the South Texas region was home to hundreds of outlaws and riffraff and some three thousand Mexican guerrillas under Juan Cortina and others were raiding settlers on both sides of the Rio Grande. McNellys Rangers stormed into this lawless area for two reasons according to Jennings: "Two have fun and to carry out a set policy of terrorizing the Mexicans at every opportunity" which would gain them the reputation as "fire-eating quarrelsome daredevils" and make their job of subduing the guerrillas an easier prospect. Within a short time the Rangers had arrested more than eleven hundred men and reputedly killed many more. Jennings records many a fight with the Mexican guerrillas including the time when McNelly defied the United States government crossed the Rio Grande and fought Cortina and his raiders at Las Cuevas. Jennings also gives accounts of scrapes with King Fishers outlaw band John Wesley Hardin and the families involved in the Taylor-Sutton feud. Originally published in 1899. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 brought an enormous chunk of Mexico to the United States. This added to the territory obtained by the annexation of Texas in 1845 but more than just territory was added. More than 75000 Spanish-speaking residents became U.S. citizens but the struggle to achieve that citizenship was long and often unsuccessful. Mexican-Americans lost political power and civil liberties quickly in Texas. Justice was hard to secure and the ranching country of South Texas became a landless borderland for Anglo and Hispano alike. Cattle thieves were rampant. Mexicans and Mexican-Americans also had to endure a terror campaign by the Texas Rangers the states leading law enforcement officers. As one of those Rangers Jennings describes a complex pattern of ethnic conflict along the border in 1875 in his A Texas Ranger. The Rangers were founded in 1835 to fight Indians formed a special corps in the Mexican War and were re-established after the Civil War. Former owner's name and address neatly stamped on ffep otherwise unmarked unread tight square and clean. NEAR FINE. . The Lakeside Classics Series. Vol. 90. Chicago: The Lakeside Press / R. R. Donnelley & Sons. As New with no dust jacket. 1992. First Edition Thus. First Printing. Hard Cover. Publisher's full brown cloth gilt lettering on spine Lakeside Press medallion gilt on cover t.e.g. 16mo. 355 pp. Illustrated with numerous color and B&W photographs plates maps and reproductions. Napoleon Augustus Jennings 18561919 was born in Philadelphia the son of a wealthy merchant on January 11 1856. He is best remembered for his autobiographical account of the career of Leander H. McNelly's Texas Ranger company in the Nueces Strip "A Texas Ranger" first published in 1899. In 1874 at age eighteen he moved to Texas where after some adventures as a cowboy he joined McNelly's Special Force on May 26. Jennings remained with the company until February 1 1877. When his father died in 1878 he returned to Philadelphia and attempted to run the family business but was smothered by city life. He returned to the West in 1881 as a prospector miner stagecoach driver and sign painter in Colorado. After three years he returned to Philadelphia and began a career as a newspaper reporter. He served variously on the staffs of the Philadelphia News Times and Tribune and the New York Star and Sun. In 1892 he was back in Texas as a reporter for the San Antonio Express but after five years he returned to New York for a long tenure with the Evening World. At the same time he was contributing copy on his days with the Texas Rangers to such magazines as Youth's Companion and the Saturday Evening Post in which he published a biographical sketch of Jesse Lee Hall in 1900. Jennings was married to operatic and vaudeville singer Edith Helena and during the first decade of the twentieth century toured Europe and America as her manager and press agent. He covered the Mexican Revolution for the New York Herald. In 1899 he published his account of his adventures in Texas. The book is a fast-paced and highly readable narrative of fights with border raiders and the capture of such outlaws as John King Fisher and John Wesley Hardin. J. Frank Dobie believed Jennings's book to be one of the best accounts of the Texas Rangers. Since 1899 the book has gone through seven editions and John H. Jenkins III listed it among his "Basic Texas Books." Jennings died in New York on December 15 1919. This volume is in perfect pristine condition unmarked unread tight square and clean. AS NEW. .
