JIM DICKINSON RDSN
1961 ORIGINAL SUPER 'BELOW DECKS' MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A RADIO OPERATOR ABOARD THE STORIED USS SHANGRI LA ON ITS SHAKEDOWN CRUISE PRIOR TO SERVICE IN VIETNAM
ASEA ABOARD THE USS SHANGRI LA. Good. 1961. On offer is a super original group of two 2 1961 diaries and journals of a noted aircraft carrier's Mediterranean shakedown cruise handwritten by Jim Dickinson RDSN a radar man aboard the storied USS Shangri - La. Commissioned in 1944 the Attack Carrier Shangri-La participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations in World War II earning two battle stars. Like many of her sister ships she was decommissioned shortly after the end of the war but was modernized and recommissioned in the early 1950s and redesignated as an attack carrier CVA. She operated in both the Pacific and Atlantic/Mediterranean for several years and late in her career was redesignated as an anti-submarine carrier CVS. She earned three battle stars for service in the Vietnam War. Between 1961 and 1970 Shangri-La alternated between deployments to the Mediterranean and operations in the western Atlantic out of Mayport. She sailed east for her first tour of duty with the 6th Fleet on 2 February 1961 and this is the handwritten account of her first we believe Mediterranean tour. The 6 by 3.5 inch diaries are each approximately 146 pages the first book being full second perhaps half are a real below deck 'swabbie' account much on drunken nights fights and police chases a lot of shakedown blues lousy chow heads that don't work and the like and a modicum of writing about actual duties by a personable US Navy Serviceman. JIM MILLER
1886 - 1908 ARCHIVE OF HANDWRITTEN AND TYPESCRIPT LETTERS BACK HOME FROM AN INTELLIGENT OBSERVANT SENIOR MINER WRITING HOME FROM THE WILDS OF IDAHO AND SOUTH AFRICA AND THE HORRORS OF THE BOER WAR
COUR D'LENE IDAHO JOHANNESBURG SOUTH AFRICA. Very Good. 1886. On offer is a sensational archive of 18 multi page letters most handwritten and some typescript from Jim Miller to his mother and sister. Mr. Miller was a senior gold and silver miner who had worked in the western United States and in Africa mostly. The letters some on company letterhead date from 1886 to 1908 and each are several pages long and diary-like having great content. Mr. Miller is an intelligent and charismatic writer detailing his work and adventures and the archive is especially rich regarding his times working for one of the largest mining operations in Southern Africa during the Boer War. He has many many striking insights observations and comments regarding the conflict. Here are some snippets: "I started out in the summer on a prospecting trip got so far into the mountains that I didn't know where I was went all by guess had no idea where I would come out and cared less. Came out finally at Lewistown on the line of Washington and Idaho Territory after traveling about five hundred miles over the toughest part of the territory. Had no particular place to go so I came to the Cour D'lene to seek my fortune. The town of Wardner is less than a year old and has over one thousand inhabitants and still increasing. The biggest mines that have ever been found in Idaho are supposed to be those that worked in and around Wardner. This country is well represented by Black Hillers the town is named after one of them. It is safe to say that one half of the people in the Cour D'lene country are from the hills. The first one that I have met since I left the hills was in Wardner. This is about like all other mining camps the principle business places are saloons and gambling halls with a few stores. The English papers would lead one to believe that British and Boer have shook hands and agree to be friends that day will never come. When the Boer prisoner returns to his farm and finds only the remains of his house what was once his happy home it will take years and years if ever they do forget the useless destruction of their homes. He is going to invite you to spend the summer with them and they would take a trip through the national park. I would like to have you go and I will pay all expenses. It will be your first chance to visit the western country and maybe George might invite you to stop at Denver the only city in the west. Labour troubles both white and black strikes are the order of the day. If it was not for the Martial law one would not know that the country was in a state of war although there are plenty of columns moving about this district about all they seem to do is travel back and forth over the same road. It is reported that all the Boer leaders are being wined and dined by the British at various centers entertained at the expense of the British taxpayer. Rumor there is a possibility of a general surrender under the terms offered anxious for peace before the coronation. This is a much larger mine then I was on in the states. It is now the third largest gold producing mine in Africa provided we get sufficient native labour it will be the largest Gold Producing Mine in the world we employ 500 white men and 3000 native. When the reports of the San Francisco disaster reached Johannesburg there were many anxious people waiting telegrams from Fathers Mothers Sisters or Brothers who were living in or near the city. I know the part that was destroyed really better than I know Joliet. Have been in Spokane four weeks trying to settle up some business. The Superintendent at the mines is more despised than Cleveland and he is considered the meanest man in the United States. The Sup has to have a body guard. I intend to start for Lewiston Idaho tomorrow expect will have a time getting there as the streams are rising very fast. The snow has been very heavy in the mountains this winter. We started to unwater the mine pumping and hauling at the rate of one million gallans per 24 hours I am unable to say how long it will take. Had a breakdown in one of the shafts and it took weeks to repair it. During that time kept the mill running from one shaft. That was the most trying time I have ever had on a mine. Can buy a woman in this country for 200 dollars in Mexican money good able bodied one quite capable of doing a mans work. While waiting at Elk City for supplies I received work from Mr Clement offering me a good position in Africa. The principle topic of the day is the unsettled question of the importation of unskilled labour there is one thing certain they can not work this country without plenty of cheap unskilled labour. The mining industry of this country is only in its infancy. It is impossible to get sufficient native labour for the natives will not work. Not being able to get up to the mines has been a great disappointment. One consolation there are thousands of others in the same fix. The less the british people say about this war the more they will shine for they have nothing to be proud of. They have been the laughing stock of the world. It seems the British Army are like their women give them time and they will finish it. There have been several instances where the Boers have surrounded and captured parties of British while the officers were enjoying a dance. Of course that is not allowed to be made public. Those in the field know everything is lost and they will continue the guerilla war as long as they know their families are well provided for the by the British. Some of the preachers who are encouraging them were taken out and shot as they have done with some Boers who went on commando again after being released. Everyone outside of military are thoroughly sick and disgusted with the whole business." Included with the archive of letter is a small account book kept by his sister in the early 1900s and a cabinet card of Mr. Miller. JJ. HALSEY PROFESSOR ? J. J.
1883 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT AUTOGRAPH LETTERS 2 SIGNED ALS BY A KEEN EYED AMERICAN VISITOR TO ST. JOHN'S NEWFOUNDLAND WHO ADVISES 'I AM DELIGHTED WITH THIS PLACE AS A SUMMER RETREAT'
ST. JOHN'S NEWFOUNDLAND 1883. On offer are a super pair 2 18th Century manuscript letters describing one American's summer trip to St. John's Newfoundland. "Everything is up or down hill in this town & it is a fruitful field for the cobbler" states the author in this handwritten letter signed "J. J. Halsey". Halsey. The first on four pages two conjoined sheets 8 x 5 in. dated St. John's Newfoundland Canada July 20 1883 writes to his colleague Professor John H. Hewitt. In full: "I have found a place where it is always cool & where fever & ague i.e. malaria cometh not. I have been here three days & during that time the skies here have been clear with no hint of fog & the temperature has ranged from 70 degrees in the noonday to the lower sixties at night. I am delighted with this place as a summer retreat & would advise one who wishes to escape the heat--& isn't afraid of an ocean run of a few days to come here." "The town lies beautifully on a land locked harbor completely shut in from the storms of the Atlantic while from the range of hills which shuts it in--opening only 600 feet for an ocean gateway--rising to nearly 600 feet one has a grand view of the ocean below & of the rugged cliffs on every hand while the vale in which St. John's lies forms a milder background. Everything is up or down hill in this town & it is a fruitful field for the cobbler. The only drawback is that there is no good hotel the present public being cared for in boarding houses. I find the one where I am very fair however. Our three days' run from New York to Halifax was a delightful one--with a smooth sea & no fog. From Halifax to Cape Race fog all the way--for three days--& a heavy sea running which made things uncomfortable. I was not sick but supremely uncomfortable. Mrs. Hewitt's generous table had unfitted me for roughing it & our boat's fare was simply execrable while the lack of any deck accommodation in the way of shelter made a sojourn on deck very unpleasant." "I have made very pleasant acquaintances here through a letter of introduction to Rev. Moses Henry a retired Presbyterian clergyman the patriarch & historian of Newfoundland. I sail tomorrow night for a three weeks' absence on the Labrador coast. I shall go as far north as Nain--in latitude 56 degrees 30' a station of the Moravian missionaries among the Esquimaux. I shall see nature unadorned--and men too. The visit to Williamstown was a delightful week of doing nothing but what I pleased in a luxurious way & I expect when roughing it on the Labrador to look back to it with longing. I took a fancy to young Ballard ; possibly "Bolland". He wanted to come along with me. I wish he had. I should enjoy it better with company. I didn't invite you for I know you wouldn't relish this kicking about in dirty boots. I hope we shall after all see Mrs. Hewitt in Lake Forest this fall. With kind regards to all Mrs. Hewitt Helen & yourself & a kiss for Theo. I am." Letter 2 on Lake Forest University letterhead writes on 3 of the 4 pages much the same dated Septermber 19th regarding Newfoundland and Labrador with a wrap up of his trip and then details of the new school year starting. Usual mailing folds otherwise clean bright and fine. Very Good. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. Manuscript. unknown

The author writes of a job opportunity in Detroit but prefers Auburn now feeling like home and he urges his friend to visit and more. JM. or GEORGE WEATHER and SAMUEL BENN J. M.
c1904 THREE 3 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN FIELD BOOKS OF THE EXTENSIVE DETAILED AND PLANNED WORK REQUIRED TO REBUILD THE TOWN OF ABERDEEN WASHINGTON AFTER IT HAD BURNT TO THE GROUND A YEAR EARLIER
ABERDEEN WASHINGTON WA. Good. 1904. On offer are three 3 original field books most probably written in 1904 and detailing the rebuilding of the city of Aberdeen Washington after a raging fire destroyed the town. On October 16 1903 a raging fire destroyed 140 buildings in the center of Aberdeen Washington. A city constructed primarily of wood including sidewalks Aberdeen had little chance of stopping the fire once it began to spread. Obviously the city needed to rebuild its streets after the fire. Two people one by the name of Weatherwax and the other by the name of Benn seem to have been hired to do the task. Weatherwax is most probably J.M. Weatherwax or George Weatherwax two men who owned a large lumber company in Aberdeen and Benn is most probably Samuel Benn. The three books are labelled P-138 book 44 P-214 book 105 and P-215 book 106. Each book contains an index at the beginning which lays out what streets in the city are written about. For example book P-215 deals with information on old planks new elevations storm sewers street levels and more on the 20 different street including Michigan Ave Jefferson St. Washington St. and more. The books are excellent artifacts of city construction from the early 20th century containing dozens of pages of detailed schematics drawings charts and figures for the city of Aberdeen in the wake of its destruction. There are approximately 450 handwritten pages over the three books. The books each measure 7 by 4 inches. All three show sustained use and strong wear. For the most part the structural integrity is still there however the last book P-215 shows the most wear with parts of the book disconnected from the binding. Two of the books shows evidence of taping to the spine and boards. These books are a fascinating look at the intricacies and details of rebuilding a city after its destruction and an intimate part at the history of Aberdeen Washington a place that Kurt Cobain would eventually call home. Background: On October 16 1903 a fire destroys 140 buildings in the center of Aberdeen. Fed by wood-frame structures wooden sidewalks and sawdust fill the fire rages unchecked until some 20 acres have burned. The fire will spur the city leaders to enact a more stringent fire code. On the morning of October 16 1903 a resident of the Arctic Hotel began making breakfast in his room. An accidental fire started and the room was quickly engulfed in flames killing the lone occupant. Within minutes the three-story frame structure was ablaze and the fire spread to adjoining buildings including the fire station and jail.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF ABERDEEN WASHINGTON FIELD BOOKS TURN OF THE 20TH CENTURY 1903 ABERDEEN FIRE MILL TOWNS J.M.
