Lao She Was A Major Popularizer Of Humor Writing In China Especially Through His Novels His Short Stories And Essays For Journals Like Lin Yutang's The Analects Fortnightly Lunyu Banyuekan Est. 1932 And His Stage Plays And Other Performing Arts Notably Xiangsheng.On 27 March 1938 The All-China Resistance Association Of Writers And Artists Was Established With Lao She As Its Leader. The Purpose Of This Organization Was To Unite Cultural Workers Against The Japanese And Lao She Was A Respected Novelist Who Had Remained Neutral During The Ideological Discussions Between Various Literary Groups In The Preceding Years. In March 1946 Lao She Travelled To The United States On A Two-Year Cultural Grant Lecturing And Overseeing The Translation Of Several Of His Novels. He Stayed In The Us From 1946 Until December 1949. During Lao She's Traveling His Friend Pearl S. Buck And Her Husband Had Served As Sponsors And They Helped Lao She Live In The U.S. After The People's Republic Of China Was Established Lao She Rejected Buck's Advice To Stay In America And Came Back To China. Rickshaw Boy Was Translated By Buck In The Early 1940'S. Lao She Was Married To Painter Hu Jieqing; Together They Had A Son And Three Daughters. During The Cultural Revolution He Was Condemned As A Counterrevolutionary Paraded By The Red Guards Through The Streets And Beaten Publicly At The Door Steps Of The Temple Of Confucius In Beijing. According To The Official Record This Abuse Left Lao She Greatly Humiliated Both Mentally And Physically And He Committed Suicide By Drowning Himself In Beijing's Taiping Lake On 24 August 1966. His Relatives Were Accused Of Implication In His "Crimes" But Rescued His Manuscripts After His Death Hiding Them In Coal Piles And A Chimney And Moving Them From House To House. Prior To His Mexican Travels Biddle Had Returned To The United States In 1927 And Established A Printing Shop In New York Where He "Began To Explore The Variety And Richness Of Technique And Expressionism Possible In Lithography" A Medium Which He Hoped Would "Popularize American Art By Making It Better Known To The American Public". He Was A Member Of The Society Of American Graphic Artists. In 1928 Went On A Sketching Trip Through Mexico With Diego Rivera. In The 1930S Biddle Became A Champion Of Social Art And Strongly Advocated Government Funding For Artistic Endeavors. His Correspondence With His Former Classmate And Recently Elected President Franklin Roosevelt Contributed To The Establishment Of The Federal Art Project An Arm Of The Works Progress Administration That Produced Several Hundred Thousand Pieces Of Publicly Funded Art. Biddle Himself Completed A Mural Titled The Tenement For The Justice Department Building In Washington D.C. And Made Sketches Of The Opera Porgy And Bess During Its Late 1930S Tour He Had Already Done The Illustrations For The Libretto In 1930. His Works Were Exhibited At The 1939 New York World's Fair. During These Years Biddle Also Wrote Several Books And Taught At The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. Biddle Was Hired In 1940 Along With Eight Other Prominent American Artists To Document Dramatic Scenes And Characters During The Production Of The Film The Long Voyage Home A Cinematic Adaptation Of Eugene O'neill's Plays. He Served As President Of The National Society Of Mural Painters From 1935 To 1936. During World War Ii Biddle Was Appointed Chairman Of The United States Department Of War's Art Advisory Committee And Served To Recruit Artists To That Body. In 1948 He Emigrated To Argentina And Settled In Buenos Aires Where He Held Personal Exhibitions In The Most Renowned Art Galleries. His Oil Paintings Were Also Exhibited In Canada Toronto 1956 And Usa New York City 1963 And 1965. He Worked As A Book Illustrator For Both Argentine And Ukrainian Publishing Houses. In 1950-1960 He Illustrated Up To 80 Ukrainian Books For Mykola Denysiuk Publishers Buenos Aires. He Cooperated Too With The Julian Serediak Publishing Firm Editors Of The "Mitla" The Broom Humor Magazine Where His Own Book Smikholina Laughter-Drops Was Published 1966. From 1950 Until His Death He Was The Only Illustrator Of The Great Series "The Unforgettable Classics" All Editions In Spanish Of The Famous "Ateneo" Publishing Firm. Along With His Work For The "Ateneo" He Illustrated Books For Another Argentine Publishing House "Atlántida".
