‎New York: American Bank Note Company 1890. Rare Chicago St. Louis and Pittsburgh Railroad Company stock certificate signed by American industrialist and philanthropist Meyer Guggenheim. Oblong octavo one page partially printed and accomplished in manuscript the certification is dated March 14 1890 and grants Guggenheim 100 shares in the Chicago St. Louis and Pittsburgh Railroad Company. Signed by him on the verso "Meyer Guggenheim." Additionally signed by Thoms D. Messler as Vice President of the Company. In near fine condition. Matted and framed with a portrait of Guggenheim and an informational placard. The piece measures 18.5 inches by 27.25 inches. Rare and desirable. Meyer Guggenheim the patriarch of the Guggenheim family made his fortune in mining and smelting in the mid- to late-19th century. In 1901 the family merged their mining interests with the American Smelting and Refining Company a trust composed of the country’s largest metal-processing plants and dominated the industry for the next three decades laying the foundation for the U.S. mining industry that exists today. With this stock certificate Guggenheim invested in the Chicago St. Louis and Pittsburgh Rail Road Co. a merger of the Columbus Chicago and Indiana Central RR and the Pittsburgh Cincinnati and St. Louis RR which would later evolve once more into the Pittsburgh Cincinnati Chicago and St. Louis RR. Deaccessioned from the Library of Congress with the library's bookplate and stamp to the pastedown. In good condition. Rare. Hungarian politician Lajos Kossuth was widely honoured during his lifetime including in Great Britain and the United States as a freedom fighter and bellwether of democracy in Europe. In 1851 he visited America with the intention of appealing to European immigrants in the American heartland with hopes that he could rally them behind the cause of a free and democratic Hungary. During his visit Kossuth infuriated the abolitionists by refusing to say anything offensive to the pro-slavery establishment which however did not give him much support. Abolitionists said that Kossuth's "hands off" position regarding American slavery was unacceptable. Wm. Lloyd Garrison on behalf of the American Anti-Slavery Society published a pamphlet "exposing the Hungarian as a self-seeking toady." ‎<p>On offer is the original 1786 manuscript cyphering book of Johanna Bergen great-great-granddaughter of foundational New Amsterdam settlers whose family landholdings helped lay the groundwork for Williamsburg Wallabout Bay parts of Brooklyn. The manuscript is also a rare surviving record of early post-Revolutionary education preserving the practical arithmetic and penmanship training of a ten-year-old girl in the new republic.</p><p>Johanna "Annetje" Bergen 1776–1833 was the great-great-granddaughter of Hans Hansen Bergen 1610–1653 and Sarah Rapelje 1625–1685. The Bergens were among historic New York's foundational colonial families closely tied to the early settlement landholding and civic development of Brooklyn and New York. Hans Hansen Bergen a Norwegian-born shipwright and early Manhattan tobacco cultivator became a significant Wallabout Bay landholder establishing a Bergen family line deeply connected to Brooklyn Williamsburg the Brooklyn Navy Yard area Long Island and New Jersey. His wife Sarah Rapelje is widely recognized as the first female child of European descent born in New Netherland the Dutch colony later ceded to the English in 1664 and renamed the Province of New York.</p><p>Johanna Bergen's biography full lineage and connection to Hans Hansen Bergen and Sarah Rapelje can be found in the biographical notes at the end of this listing.</p><p>Johanna Bergen grew up in Kings County New York during a period of profound social disruption. Born on October 2 1776 just over a month after the devastating Battle of Long Island her early childhood unfolded during the British military occupation of New York and the post-Revolutionary rebuilding that followed. As the daughter of a prominent Dutch-American family her 1780s education would have reflected her family's heritage faith social position and the expectations placed upon young women in early American households.</p><p>Begun on October 11 1786 just days after Johanna Bergen's tenth birthday this cyphering book documents the formal arithmetic education of a young woman from one of Kings County's leading Dutch-American families. Its carefully ruled pages move through numeration money division compound multiplication land cloth liquid dry Winchester apothecaries' avoirdupois and troy measures showing that Bergen received structured instruction in the practical mathematics of trade household management land goods and account keeping.</p><p>The book does not name her school or teacher but its format is consistent with the local post-Revolutionary Kings County school world most likely instruction by a private schoolmaster tutor or local academy-style teacher serving Dutch-American families in Brooklyn Flatbush Gowanus or the surrounding communities.</p><p>A small later notation at the back names Johanna Bergen's niece Sarah Conover spelled "Connover" in the manuscript adding an important layer of family provenance. Sarah Conover was the daughter of Rachel Bergen Conover Johanna's sister and a fellow daughter of Tunis Bergen and Annetie Stoothoff. The inscription therefore firmly places the cyphering book within the extended Bergen family and the broader Bergen-Rapalje lineage of early New Netherland.</p><p><strong>Condition: </strong>The book measures approximately 13.5 x 12 inches and contains 41 complete pages with writing on the recto and verso of most leaves. The protective boards are rubbed the text block is loose from the boards and the pages show brittleness light chipping and some splitting. The manuscript text remains clean bright legible and substantially intact written throughout in a lovely period hand. Overall better than fair.</p><p><strong>Biographical Notes:</strong></p><p>Johanna Bergen was born in New Utrecht Kings County New York on October 2 1776 in the opening months of the American Revolution. She stood at a symbolic crossroads in New York history: a great-great-granddaughter of New Amsterdam pioneer Hans Hansen Bergen she represented one of the old Dutch colonial families entering the new American era.</p><p>On March 15 1798 she married Stephen Samuel Stryker 1776–1851 and together they had at least six children: Maria 1798–1875 Tunis 1800–1852 Samuel 1803–1876 Johanna 1807–1837 Anna 1809–1869 and Sarah 1814–1865. They lived on Stryker's farm located between Gravesend and New Utrecht. His 1639 marriage to Sarah Rapalje widely celebrated as the first female child of European descent born in New Netherland tied the Bergen family directly to the colony's earliest European-born generation. Bergen later moved from maritime carpentry into early Manhattan tobacco cultivation and in 1647 secured a substantial patent at Wallabout Bay land historically associated with the later development of Williamsburg and the Brooklyn Navy Yard area.</p><p>For institutional researchers and private collectors surviving manuscripts and ephemera from the Bergen lineage are desirable because they offer a direct material link to the formation of Kings County and early New York. A.D. 295 and a year or two later at the instance of his bishop he wrote seven books 'Adversus Nationes' 'Against the Pagans'. 'His work throws light on the Christian-pagan debate immediately before the Great Persecution while the venom of his attack on traditional Roman paganism shows that this was by no means dead'. OCD 2nd edition p. 122 His style is easy-flowing. Arnobius makes little use of the New and none of the Old Testament. His view of God is platonic. The unintended side effect of the efforts of Arnobius and other Church Fathers to ridicule or crush paganism was that their writings form an archive which preserves knowledge and practices of polytheism in the years of its decline in late antiquity. § Just as the early christians bolstered their piety by contrasting it with the demonic foulness of pagan religion so the protestants of the 16th century used their knowledge of pagan idolatry to scourge their catholic adversaries. Critics of Catholicism like Calvin compared catholic mass e.g. with the bloody rituals of the pagans and used the sacrifices of the ancients to score theological points against their opponents. 'Protestants detected in the Catholic cult of images the pagan idols so well described by late antique critics like Arnobius'. The Classical Tradition Cambr. Mass. 2010 p. 678 s.v. Paganism The work of Arnobius was first published in Rome in 1542 although the preface is dated 1543. Other editions followed in 1546 1560 and 1580. Our edition of 1582 was produced by the Dutch scholar Theodorus Canterus Dirk Canter 1545-1617. He followed the edition of Gelenius of 1546 who sometimes rewrote the text 'ope ingenii' to make difficult passages intelligible. Canterus inserts some modifications of his own and returns for readings to the 'editio princeps' of 1542 edited by Faustus Sabaeus. This was a wise policy and a sensible thing to do. Canter's textual and exegetical notes appear as endnotes. He was the brother of the great classical scholar Willem Canter studied classics in Paris under Lambinus but was the rest of his life primarily a political and religious adventurer in his hometown the city of Utrecht. He was there mayor political agitator religious opportunist and extremist a conspirator to overthrow the government of the city to seize power. He was banished in 1611.
